April-May Transactions: Latest - RHP Matt Childers to DL

MassBrew

No word yet on the nature nor the extent of their injuries, but both LHP Jorge de la Rosa and RHP Brian Bowles of Indianapolis have been placed on the disabled list.

More to come by tomorrow, hopefully...

Wonderful. Who's next? Sheets? Hopefully this is a non-arm injury, preferably something like a broken toe or athlete's foot or whatever. If I read "shoulder soreness" or "tender elbow" again, I might vomit.

Here's the latest on De La Rosa, as per Adam McCalvy's latest Notes column at MLB.com:

Quote:
Another of the Brewers' top prospects found his way to the disabled list when left-hander Jorge De La Rosa was scratched from a Triple-A start on Wednesday night.

De La Rosa, who is 1-4 with a 6.47 ERA this season, was placed on the seven-day DL with left shoulder tendinitis along with right-handed reliever Brian Bowles (right elbow). Right-hander Matt Childers made the start for Triple-A Indianapolis.

"It's nothing real major, just a precautionary move," Brewers farm director Reid Nichols said of De La Rosa. "It had been bothering him his last couple starts and we didn't want to be short of pitching in the next few days."

Since the Brewers' minor league chain was rated tops in the game by Baseball America during Spring Training, it has been besieged by injuries. Three of the magazine's top 10 Brewers prospects are currently on the DL (No. 3 J.J. Hardy, No. 6 Mike Jones and No. 9 Dave Krynzel) and one was on the DL earlier this year (No. 4 Manny Parra).

De La Rosa, a former Red Sox prospect acquired from the Diamondbacks in the Richie Sexson trade, did not crack the top 10 but is considered the team's second-best left-handed pitching prospect behind Parra.

"It would frustrate anybody," Nichols said of the spate of injuries. "But I think we're better now than we've been. We're recovering."

Hardy is lost for the season to a shoulder injury, but Krynzel (broken foot) is about halfway through the two months he was expected to miss and Nichols said Jones (elbow) is targeted for an early June return. Parra is back pitching at Advanced Single-A High Desert and is 1-1 with a 4.42 ERA in four games.

The team promoted pitcher Paul Stewart from Double-A Huntsville and signed free agent right-hander Clint Weibl to fill out Indy's staff.

The emphasized portion above is disturbing. If he's had a sore shoulder, why has he been pitching? Is Nichols serious? If De La Rosa didn't reveal that he was having trouble, then that's one thing. But if he complained of shoulder soreness and was ignored or otherwise told to tough it out... well, let's just say I wouldn't be real happy with the Brewers.

Thoughts?

Indianapolis Press Release:

The Indianapolis Indians have signed 29-year-old free agent pitcher Clint Weibl, the team announced today. The 6-3, 180-pound righthander is a native of Mt. Pleasant, Pa. and pitched collegiately at the University of Miami (Fla.).

Weibl spent last season with Triple-A Memphis and Independent Long Island, posting a combined 7-7 record in 25 appearances. He started 21 games. For the year, he threw 121.2 innings, giving up 61 runs on 136 hits. Weibl walked 41 and struck out 82.

Weible was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 37th round of the 1996 draft.

Of course, it's only a matter of time before the "Weibl Wobbles Opposition" headline is used...

The Brewers purchased the contract of Atlantic City Surf pitcher Jeff Farnsworth on Friday, and assigned him to their Class AAA affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians.

Farnsworth, who pitched for the Detroit Tigers in 2002, was 2-0 with a 2.96 ERA in four starts for the Surf, which plays in the independent Atlantic League.

He was a second round pick of the Mariners back in 1996 but missed 23 months following Tommy John Surgery. He was a Rule 5 selection of the Tigers and spent all of 2002 with them. From TopProspectAlert:

Quote:
He throws a 90-91 mph fastball with some serious cutback, and a slider that, although a bit wild, drops off the table.

Not sure yet what his role will be... he pitched out of the bullpen with Detroit but was a starter with Atlantic City.

The Brewers purchased the contract today of infielder Troy Farnsworth

I can just see Melvin in his office, tapping his fingers together saying: "Farnsworth. More Farnsworths. I must have Farnsworths!"

This puts Indy back over the limit, and by my count, Huntsville is still a few under the limit. I think Gemoll's days in Indy may be numbered, and Morris could be primed for a promotion from High Desert, with Rottino possibly slipping up to HD from Beloit to take his spot.
