The Harrisburg Senators announced today that relief pitcher Fernando Rijo has been sent to the Milwaukee Brewers organization as a player to be named later in an earlier trade.

The Expos acquired infielder Alejando Machado in an earlier move, and assigned him to high-A Brevard County.

Good speculation, Toby...

From David Weiser:

RHP Ryan Miller has gone on the disabled list, retroactive to Tuesday 4/27, with elbow soreness.

Miller, profiled here in the Stars' thread recently, was off to a fantastic start...

24-year-old High Desert LHP Ryan Costello, a selection in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft out of the Blue Jays' system last December, has been transferred from High Desert to Huntsville, according to the Mavericks' site.

Costello really struggled in High Desert in his first few appearances, but if one fine outing can earn you a jump up in level, apparently his most recent line did -- a five-inning, two-hit, no-run relief stint.

Noticed in Sunday's box score that LHP Mitch Stetter made a scoreless season debut with the Snappers in a relief stint.

Stetter was expected to be in the Beloit rotation to open the season, but had been held back in extended spring training.

Stetter, 23 years old, was 6-2 with a 3.95 ERA and a very impressive 63-to-12 K/BB ratio in 54.2 IP in 2003 with Helena.

If Stetter can work his way into the rotation after being stretched out, he'd join Dana Eveland and Greg Kloosterman as promising southpaw starters at the low-A level for the Brewers.

OF Ryan Knox has been removed from the Huntsville site roster page.

Not necessarily going out on a limb, he's now in Indianapolis again, based on Huntsville's schedule finally freeing up a bit. He'll see plenty of time in David Krynzel's absence, with veteran Jon Nunnally returning to a DH / 4th OF role.

Beloit OF Steve Moss has been activated from the Snapper disabled list. He saw action as the DH Thursday night.

EDIT: Actually, just realized that we don't think Moss was ever officially placed on the disabled list.

Either way, he's back...

Indianapolis Press Release on RHP Matt Wise:

Indianapolis Indians relief pitcher Matt Wise has been promoted to Milwaukee, the team announced after Tuesday?s game. The Brewers have designated pitcher Adrian Hernandez for assignment.

Wise, 28, went 1-0 and posted a 1.80 ERA in seven appearances with Indianapolis. The righthander threw 20 innings, gave up 12 hits, 4 runs, walked five and struck out 14. He held righthanded hitters to a .184 average and lefthanded batters to a .167 average.

In 2001,Wise earned a World Series ring pitching a portion of the season with the Anaheim Angels. A native of Montclair, Cal., the 6-4,195-pounder has appeared in 26 Major League games (all with Anaheim)and posted a 4-7 record and 4.74 ERA.

RHP Dan McKenna, the 2003 27th rounder, has been transferred from the Helena roster and has reported to Beloit from extended spring training. McKenna struck out 21 while walking seven in 17.2 IP last summer.

With this move, the Snapper roster appears to be at 25, the active limit, with SS Josh Murray on the DL. There are 13 pitchers on the Beloit roster.

I lost the link, but had read from New Jersey that McKenna underwent minor facial surgery just prior to spring training after an accident in his hometown training facility. Fortunately, unlike Anaheim's Brendan Donnelly, McKenna has not had any setbacks, or so it seems.

RHP Dan Kolb (not to be confused with the Dan Kolb at the big league level) has been placed on the High Desert disabled list.

Kolb last pitched on Sunday, and he hasn't been listed among the many day-to-day Maverick walking wounded in any press accounts this week, so not sure what the injury is here.

Thanks to the Beloit management team for acting so quickly for us and updating their Transaction page.

LHP Greg Kloosterman, who had inexplicably struggled so badly in his most recent outings, has been placed on the Snapper DL with an undisclosed injury.

Not sure if we're going to hear much on injury issues directly from the affiliates. Hopeully the Beloit Daily News updates us, and we'll also ask our regular Beloit visitors to find out what they can about the young man they call "Kloos".

This resolves the Beloit roster mystery discussed in a separate thread here this week.

Excuse me if this had been mentioned on the Major League board, which I haven't peeked at yet this evening --

Indianapolis Press Note:

Righthanded pitcher Adrian Hernandez cleared waivers after being designated for assignment and will report to Indianapolis, the Indians and Milwaukee Brewers announced today. Hernandez will join the Indians on Monday at Victory Field for the first day of an eight-game homestand.

Hernandez, 29, appeared in six games for the Brewers, adding one start. He threw 16 innings, gave up 15 runs on 20 hits, walked 14 and struck out 14. The 6-1,180-pounder was 0-2 with a 8.44 ERA.

Hernandez was acquired by the Brewers as a minor league free agent on January 9,2004. He spent last year at Triple-A Columbus making two non-injury related appearances at Class A Tampa and Double-A Trenton. He posted sub-4.00 ERA in all five months of the season.

A native of Havana, Cuba, Hernandez has a career minor league record of 30-21 with a 4.54 ERA and one save.

This should not affect the roster further -- Hernandez would take Matt Wise's spot on the roster. -- MB

Two new names on the Huntsville roster:

LHP Pete Zamora

28 years old, AAA veteran

www.sports-wired.com/play...?Name=HFDG

and 39-year-old RHP Jose Rijo (yes, that Jose Rijo)

Not to be confused with recently-signed Stars' RHP Fernando Rijo

www.sports-wired.com/play...?Name=BEDG

Although Zamora appeared for the Yankees' AA club in Trenton in one appearance earlier this year, it appears he was signed as a free agent, as would have been Rijo.

No word on the associated moves to make room for the newcomers.

We'll see if the Jose Rijo listing is a Sports Network error or not; Stars' announcer Robert Portnoy just mentioned the Pete Zamora signing, nothing on Rijo, but I just tuned in.

LHP Matt Ford has been placed on the Huntsville DL retroactive to May 12th.

As posted earlier, from David Weiser:

Matt Ford shares a similar problem with Mike Jones....... Both say they're healthy enough to pitch, but neither are being given clearance by the organization to return, naturally causing some frustration for both........ In Ford's case, he has some muscle soreness under his scar where he had bone chips removed in the off season. When asked when Ford would return, manager Frank Kremblas just shrugged his shoulders.

For those who have lost track, your Huntsvile pitchers on the disabled list are RHP's Greg Bruso, Ben Diggins, Ryan Miller, Mike Jones, and Jason Shelley, and LHP Matt Ford. In addition, RHP's Reggie Rivard and John Novinsky just returned to action after nursing injuries that did not require DL time.

The Brewers have signed LH reliever Homero Rivera as a free agent. He's a minor league vet, and will be 27 years old in August. He was 13-4 last year in AA Erie (Tigers), but that was in a middle relief / set-up role, so he must have been lucky with some vulture win situations.

He was released by the Padres recently after pitching (not well) with AA Mobile. Didn't check back to see if he faced Huntsville earlier. Career BB numbers are good, not a strikeout pitcher. Nothing else jumps out at you numbers-wise.

No additional roster move was necessary; the Mavs' active roster is at 25.

Indianapolis Press Release:

Indianapolis reliever Mike Adams has been recalled by Milwaukee and will join the Brewers in Puerto Rico. He takes the place of Ben Ford who has been placed on the disabled list.

(Adams' promotion can be discussed on the Major League forum - MassBrew)

RH reliever Roberto Giron has been promoted from Double-A Huntsville and will join the Tribe in Indianapolis on Monday for the upcoming series with the Clippers.

For anyone who may be in the know... *cough*brewcru1*cough*

I'm wondering what the status is of the players on the DSL and VSL rosters. Because the Brewers aren't fielding teams there, they really can't have a roster there. Have they all been assigned to Arizona yet? Thanks for any info.

Edit: Just a thought... is it wise to have a pitcher for the Mavs named Homer-o? That's just asking for trouble.

I guess I'd rather it be Homer-o than Homer-lots...
