April-May Transactions: Latest - RHP Matt Childers to DL

MassBrew

Here's the link to the Spring Transactions thread should you need to review:

pub123.ezboard.com/fbrewe...mp;stop=40

To kick off April's thread, LHP Manny Parra's contract was moved from the Huntsville roster to the High Desert roster, and Manny has been placed on the Mavericks' disabled list.

A reminder that the minor league DL is a 7-day, not a 15-day DL. No word on the latest news on Manny's sore shoulder, but it's safe to say we won't see him active in seven days, I would think.

It would be nice to see Manny pitching soon in his native California. It'd be a nice plus for Mavs' fans as well.

Get well, Manny!

The Huntsville DL includes RHP's Ben Diggins, Greg Bruso, and Jason Shelley.

In the case of Shelley, his contract was transferred from Indianapolis, where it had been listed since being moved there for the Rule 5 draft last fall.

Have we found out what's wrong with Greg Bruso yet? I did a couple searches on google news and lexis and didn't come up with anything. Hope it's nothing serious, but it would be nice to know either way.

I don't like the idea of him starting off at High Desert.

It's probably so he can work his program and pitch early at the minor league city with the most favorable weather. If it's just tendonitis or something like that, it should be beneficial for Manny to work in the warm air in High Desert.

Hendrickson did very well there, so maybe they figure with Parra's mentality he an benefit from some time in High Desert. Maybe dominating in that league could be beneficial

I don't like the idea of him starting off at High Desert. That is like sending a pitcher to Colorado and expecting him to succeed. I hope it's one start and on to Huntsville, once he gets of the DL.

Even if the Brewers aren't fond of their relationship with High Desert, I'm not a big fan of them pushing pitchers (and all of our prospects) right past the level if the park affects are their concern. As DHonks noted, and as we've talked about before, Ben Hendrickson pitched there & pitched quite well, knowing he had the keep the ball down. While there is a fear that the affects will rattle a pitcher's confidence, it forces them to do things they might not normally do.

I'm on record several times stating that I felt Mike Jones should have started last year at High Desert, and should have logged 100 innings or so before being bumped up to Huntsville. I felt the same way this year with both Sarfate & Parra. There's nothing wrong with letting Parra or anyone else get a taste of that level, as it shouldn't just be a dumping ground for the rest of our prospects & roster fillers. As someone else pointed out, probably MassBrew, none of our 30 prospects were originally assigned to that level. That's too bad. There's no doubt in my mind that the Brewers will pursue a different high-A affiliate this offseason, but again, I think it's wrong that they don't even use the level as it is now as a proving ground for most of our top prospects.

High Desert RHP Josh Alliston, who felt a twinge in his elbow in the April 10th game, was placed on the Mavericks' disabled list on April 12th.

RHP Dan Kolb, who had been kept back in extended spring training, was added to the High Desert roster and has since made two appearances.

To answer my own question from a while ago, RHP Greg Bruso is rehabbing a sore throwing shoulder.

Tahoe Daily Tribune, "Bruso mending tender shoulder," Byline Steve Yingling, April 15:

www.tahoedailytribune.com.../-1/SPORTS

"Hopefully in the next couple of weeks I'll be throwing," Bruso said. "It'll take four to five weeks to get back into pitching shape, so I'll be here a month and a half at least ... it could take longer if there isn't a spot open for me."

Very good article - worth a read.

Huntsville catcher Alex Delgado has been placed on the Temporary Inactive List.

2001 19th round pick Joel Alvarado has been transferred from the Helena roster to the Huntsville roster to back up Kade Johnson.

Alvarado, who will be 24 in June, has only hit .187 in 486 career AB's. He's 14-for-71 (.198) in prior brief stints in Huntsville the past two season.

Definition of Temporary Inactive List:

A player with an excused absence to perform personal obligations is placed on this list. The player must be on the Temporarily Inactive List for a minimum of three days before the player can be reinstated to the Active List. A player on the Temporarily Inactive List does not count against a Club's Active List limits, but does count against its Reserve List limits.

The Brewers have confirmed based on our inquiry that RHP Brian Rauch voluntarily retired on April 16th after one outing with the Snappers. The 23-year-old Rauch had appeared in 11 games (three starts) with the Arizona Rookie club last season. Rauch was signed as an undrafted free agent from the University of North Florida.

Interestingly, the Snapper roster remains at 24 (and 23 if you consider OF Steve Moss as injured / unavailable). League rules permit 25 active players.

High Desert Press Release:

Adelanto, CA ? The Milwaukee Brewers signed LHP Michael Kusiewicz as a Free Agent and placed him on the High Desert Mavericks roster. Kusiewicz took the roster spot that was opened up when RHP Nick Neugebauer was placed on the Mavericks disabled list (effective 4/19/2004).

Kusiewicz comes to the Mavericks as a nine year minor league veteran with AAA and AA experience. Kusiewicz was drafted in the 8th Round of the 1994 draft by the Colorado Rockies and has also been a member of the Toronto, Boston and Oakland organizations.

You're not goign to get a lot of detail on Neugy online, your best bet is listening in to tonight's audiocast, perhaps Jim Powell will learn more as well.

Kusiewicz was in minor league camp with the Brewers until his release just prior to the season's start.

And my keyboard just exploded typing the news of a Neugebauer / Kusiewicz roster swap http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif

LOL.

As for the Neugebauer news, there's nothing on Google News or Lexis yet. Let's just hope it's a pulled hamstring or something, and has nothing to do with the big man's right shoulder.

Indianapolis Press Release:

Right-handed pitcher Reggie Rivard, who has spent the season with Double-A Huntsville, has joined the Indianapolis Indians, the club announced today. Rivard joined the Indians in Louisville on Monday and will primarily be used in the Tribe bullpen.

Rivard, 26, hails from Edmonton, Alberta. The 6-2, 190-pound pitcher has made seven relief appearances with Double-A Huntsville, posting a 5.91 ERA and collecting his first decision Saturday. He pitched two innings and earned a win against Tennessee. In 10.2 innings with Huntsville, he has walked two and struck out six.

Rivard was signed as a minor league free agent by the Milwaukee Brewers on January 7, 2004. He split last season between Double-A Frisco and Triple-A Oklahoma, producing an 0-2 record in 35 appearances with one save.

With Mike Jones' elbow barking a bit and multiple doubleheaders coming up, the Brewers really needed to correct a number shortage in arms at Huntsville.

RHP Reggie Rivard's stay in Indy was brief (for now, at least) as he's headed back to Huntsville.

Taking his spot at Indianapolis is 30-year-old RHP Todd Erdos, who was purchased from the Minnesota Twins' AAA Rochester team today. Erdos has made 63 major league appearances with the Padres, Yankees and Red Sox in his career.

Also to assist Huntsville, the Brewers have acquired 26-year-old RHP Fernando Rijo, in his 10th year as a pro. Rijo had been with the Montreal organization this spring, and as of this time, not sure if this was another "purchase".
