Stephen Chapman with 15 homers now...steve has the ability to play a good cf, so his power is a huge benefit...he should finish the year with 20-22 which is really a big number for single A...he's got 30 homer potential and he plays slick d and runs fast...the only dissapointment from chappy this year has been the lack of wlks, which while not totally absent are a bit lower than they need to be, bringing his OBP down a bit...

Final: West Virginia 7, Greensboro (Marlins) 5

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

BREWER DELIVERS IN THE CLUTCH

Brent Brewer knocked in West Virginia?s final two runs and made a spectacular leaping catch which led to a game-ending double play at First Horizon Park as the Power homered three more times and took the rubber match from the Grasshoppers 7-5 on Monday afternoon.

Chuckie Caufield singled in Andrew Lefave in the first inning to plate the first run of the game before Taylor Green belted a two-run homer, his second of the series and his eleventh of the season. The Grasshoppers answered quickly with four runs in the bottom of the first. James Guerrero?s base hit scored John Raynor to put the ?Hoppers on the board and Daniel Santin drilled a three-run homer to give Greensboro their only lead.

Steve Chapman hit a two-run shot in the top of the fourth to put the Power ahead. The home run was his 15th of the year, and his third of the series. Brewer drove in his first of two runs on a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. The Grasshoppers plated their final run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Scott Cousins. Brewer gave the Power some breathing room in the ninth inning as he hit a solo home run on a 1-2 pitch from Jay Buente. In the ninth, with a runner on first and one out, John Raynor hit a line drive to short. Brewer made a great leaping catch and fired the ball to first base to complete the game-ending double play.

Chris Toneguzzi (4-1) settled down after allowing four runs on five hits in the first inning. Toneguzzi sat down 11 in a row after the first inning and struck out six en route to his fourth straight victory. Travis Wendte (4) tossed a scoreless ninth inning and Christhian Martinez (3-3) was tagged with the loss. The Power bullpen allowed just one run in 11 innings of relief in the series.

The Power improved to 62-31 overall and 14-11 in the second half, while the Grasshoppers fell to 46-49 overall and 8-17 in the second half with the loss. West Virginia homered eight times in the series. Chapman and Green both had a pair of hits for the Power.

The Power will begin a four game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws at First Energy Park on Tuesday night. The Power will start right hander Jeremy Jeffress (5-3, 2.85) and the BlueClaws will counter with right hander Darren Byrd (5-6, 4.33). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Amidst all the positives, catcher Andy Bouchie is mired in a brutal slump; plenty of ejections on the Grasshoppers side of the field, including their batting coach, former Brewer farmhand Anthony Iapoce...

Final: Arizona Brewers 8, Arizona Cubs 7, ten innings

Cubs lose! Cubs lose! Man, this must have felt good. We understand the 12 in attendance (actual figure) stormed the field to signal the end of a seven-game losing streak.

Arizona Box Score:

It was a walk-off error off a basehit -- loses it's glamour, but that's what happened; 17-year-old RHP Luis Guerrero, who had impressed previously, walked six in a relief stint; Brewers commit five errors yet turn four double plays -- go figure; because of a high walk count, OF Charlie Iacono gets on nearly 40% of the time, although his .206 average doesn't reflect that -- when he does get on base, watch out (three steals today, 13 on the season); Edgar Trejo on base three times; Carlos Hereaud a three-run HR...

Arizona Game Log:

Trejo's sacrifice fly scored Iacono to tie it in the bottom of the 9th; haven't pored over every detail of this game log yet, but that looks like a fun assignment for later tonight...

Sounds Drop Road Trip Opener To Z's, 4-1

METAIRIE, La. ? The Nashville Sounds came up on the short end of a 4-1 loss to the New Orleans Zephyrs on Monday evening at Zephyr Field in the opener of a four-game series.

The defeat snapped a four-game road winning streak for Nashville (58-37), which had its division lead reduced to six games over Iowa.

Zephyrs starter Philip Humber (10-6) earned his Pacific Coast League-leading tenth victory as he defeated the Sounds for the third time in three starts this season. The right-hander held Nashville to one run on four hits over 7 2/3 innings.

New Orleans grabbed a 1-0 lead against R.A. Dickey in the bottom of the first inning. Anderson Hernandez led off with a single to center and scored two batters later on a Fernando Tatis RBI double to right.

The Z?s added three more runs in the third against Dickey to increase the advantage to 4-0. Hernandez got things started again by opening the frame with a triple to right before making it a 2-0 game when he scored on a Tatis single. Chip Ambres added an RBI single before Ricky Ledee wrapped up the frame?s scoring by driving in Tatis with a sacrifice fly.

Drew Anderson broke up Humber?s shutout bid in the top of the eighth inning when he chased the right-hander with a two-out RBI single to right that plated Chris Barnwell, bringing the score to its final 4-1. With the knock, Anderson extended his hitting streak to nine games, one short of his best effort this season.

The Sounds brought the potential tying run to the plate later in the frame in the person of cleanup hitter Joe Dillon but Nashville?s RBI leader was retired on an inning-ending flyout by Z?s reliever Willie Collazo.

Barnwell (0-for-3) had his season-best seven-game hitting streak halted in the contest.

Dickey (7-5) suffered his first loss in 18 appearances, dating back to May 2. He allowed four runs on seven hits while walking four batters and striking out five over his seven innings of work.

The teams continue the series at 7 p.m. on Tuesday when right-hander Elmer Dessens (right shoulder strain) will make his first rehab appearance in a start for the Sounds. New Orleans will counter with right-hander Mike Pelfrey (2-2, 3.44).

Nashville Box Score:

Jose Macias 0-for-his-last-30, ouch! Mike Rivera really struggling, too...

Final: Brevard County 7, Dunedin (Blue Jays) 4

MiLB.com:

Manatees clip Blue Jays

Chris Cody tossed six scoreless innings and Angel Salome drove in three runs as Brevard County defeated visiting Dunedin, 7-4, on Monday.

Cody (2-2) allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four. The 23-year-old left-hander went 5-5 with a 1.74 ERA in 14 outings for Class-A West Michigan. E.J. Shanks gave up two hits in 1 2/3 scoreless frames for his eighth save.

Salome ripped an RBI single in the fourth inning and slugged a two-run homer, his sixth, in the fifth. Cole Gillepsie and Mike Bell belted back-to-back solo blasts in the eighth and Yohannis Perez drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth for the Manatees (14-11).

Blue Jays starter Brandon Magee (2-6) took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits and four walks with one strikeout in 4 1/3 innings.

Anthony Hatch hit a two-run single, Brian Jeroloman drew a bases loaded walk and Jesus Gonzales delivered an RBI groundout in a four-run seventh for Dunedin (16-9). -- Ryan McConnell/MLB.com

Brevard County Box Score:

Manatees draw five walks to go with their eight hits -- what's with the home runs this week -- nice; Patrick Ryan came on with one out in the 7th and allowed all three inherited runners to score, so newcomer Mike Marksbury's debut pitching line is pretty ugly; Marksbury walked two and allowed two ground ball singles, so it wasn't that hideous an outing...

Brevard County Game Log:

Groundball closer E.J. Shanks' game logs are wonderfully predictable...

Final: Helena 9, Casper (Rockies) 5

Helena Box Score:

RHP Jose Garcia five scoreless innings; Caleb Gindl the DH to ease back into action with the hamstring injury, and as noted above, his three hits have him at .500 (29-for-58, 11 extra-base hits) -- that's just insane, never mind for an 18-year-old...

Helena Independent Record:

Brewers hold off Rockies again

CASPER, Wyo. - The Helena Brewers did it again, defeating the Casper Rockies 9-5 in the third game of their four-game series.

The Brewers have dominated the series so far.

After a quick and scoreless first inning, the Brewers got into the game, scoring three runs.

Steffan Wilson hit a line drive to get on base, then was driven in by Caleb Gindl, who went 3-for-4 on the day.

Gindl in turn made it home on a Zelous Wheeler home run.

The third inning was just as productive for the Brewers, as they scored three more runs.

Helena kept up the pace for the next two innings, scoring one in the fourth and two in the fifth while keeping the Rockies to zero.

Wheeler's run in the fifth inning was the Brewers' last, and the Rockies seemed to be catching up.

Craig Langille gave up two runs after relieving starter Jose Garcia in the sixth. He was replaced in the seventh by Brock Kjeldgaard, who went on to give up three more runs that inning but managed to hold the Rockies' bats off in the eighth. Bobby Bramhall finished out the game, keeping Casper hitless in the ninth. Garcia got the win and Casper's Juan Nicasio was tagged with the loss.

Helena plays in Casper again tonight at 7:05 PM (8:05 Central) before returning home to face the Idaho Falls Chukars on Thursday.

Hoppers game was like OK Corral

By Matt Brooks, Greensboro News-Record Staff Writer

GREENSBORO -- On a steamy afternoon at First Horizon Park, tempers flared and ejections piled up in a 7-5 Hoppers loss to West Virginia.

It seemed only fitting, then, that the game concluded with a record-breaking squirt gun fight to ease the tension and let cooler heads prevail.

Greensboro trailed 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning when second baseman James Guerrero stepped to the plate with runners at second and third and one out. As Power pitcher Jose Romero set himself and delivered, Guerrero backed out of the box. In accordance with a new rule, the pitch was called a strike.

Hoppers hitting coach Anthony Iapoce, who was stationed at third base, immediately approached home plate umpire Travis Carlson to argue the call. Moments later, Carlson ejected Iapoce for arguing balls and strikes.

"It's a new rule that if the batter gets out of the box during the pitch, it's a strike. I wasn't arguing that," manager Edwin Rodriguez said. "But it seems like the umpires are waiting until late in the series and late in the game with runners in scoring position to call that.

"If you're going to call that, do it the first game of the series so everybody knows and everybody is ready. But don't do it the last game of the series in the late innings. Don't be a factor in the decision. Just let the guys play."

Rodriguez took over as third base coach, but he didn't last long.

After Guerrero struck out swinging, Carlson ejected Logan Morrison from the Hoppers' dugout.

Greensboro's everyday first baseman had the day off, but was shouting at Carlson from the top step of the dugout.

Rodriguez jogged over to base umpire Tom Walkoviak to argue, then trotted to home plate to berate Carlson.

Moments later, Rodriguez joined the ejection parade.

Rodriguez kicked the dirt around home plate until the white dish was covered, then placed his cap atop the mound he had built and stormed off to the clubhouse to a standing ovation.

The cheering continued when Hoppers bat-dog Miss Babe Ruth trotted out and retrieved the cap.

"Maybe they can send that in to ESPN," Rodriguez said. "That was a good one for Babe."

The long inning ended when Spike McDougall struck out with two on and two out and the Hoppers trailing by a run.

Rodriguez said it wasn't the first time the new rule has been enforced at a pivotal moment.

"The same thing has happened to us five times -- three times against us and twice in our favor," he said. "Late in the game, two outs and runners in scoring position and they make that call. Same situation. I don't know why they keep doing that."

The final tirade was Rodriguez's third of the inning. Earlier he argued with Carlson after a pitch appeared to hit John Raynor but was called a ball.

He also argued with Walkoviak when Greg Burns was called out even though West Virginia second baseman Brad Miller bobbled the ball.

Despite their frustrating finish, Rodriguez, Iapoce and the rest of the Hoppers returned to the field after the game along with many of the 5,393 fans in attendance to take part in a squirt-gun fight on Super Splash Day.
