What a fun group of pitchers today! Liriano is coming off a great start, IIRC; Housman, in my mind, is the most improved prospect of the year so far; Manny has started to look like his old self despite pitching in a shooting gallery; and Pena has been solid. Very cool times.

Al, you've said that before, and I'm curious why you like him as much as you do. I don't mean the question in a "defend yourself, fool" way at all; I'm really curious. He has been solid throughout his career, and he has stayed healthy;those are two huge things. But his peripheral stats have never screamed "sleeper." What do you see that jazzes you?

Me, I'm becoming Jeff Housman's number one pimp. I thought Sickels' rating him the #20 prospect in the organization coming off last year's unearned run fest was ludicrous, but the boy has been eating his spinach, or something, at Huntsville this year. It's too soon to be confident of anything, but he has looked like a different pitcher so far this year.

You pretty much summed it up, Greg. Solid, healthy, and plenty young for his league. He was good in his year of 22 at AA, and is doing fine in AAA at 23.

507 K's in 543 innings.

35 HR's in 543 innings.

I would project him as a #3 starter at best, but much like Bill Hall, the guy has plenty of ceiling left to surprise me. And, I've always been a big believer in having a couple #2's and a bunch of #3's, as I hate risking $10 mil per year on a couple tendons, elbow, and shoulder.

EDIT: Corrected typo.

35 HR's in 243 innings

Kind of high, isn't that?

I would project him as a #3 starter at best

We'll see Al. I guess I have never been all that impressed by his numbers, so I have always had him as winding up (at best) as a #5 starter or short reliever. Of course, if he began throwing in the 90's by joining the bullpen, a setup role wouldn't be out of the question.

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

Mark Smith, a former Indianapolis Indian, came up with a key pinch hit Saturday night as the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons defeated Indianapolis, 7-4. Another former Indian, Jim Rushford, added a pair of RBI doubles for the Red Barons, who improve to 28-20. The Tribe falls to 27-20.

Scranton scored four runs in the sixth inning to build a 6-1 lead. The Tribe rallied for two runs in the seventh and one run in the ninth, but it was not enough.

Columbus defeated Ottawa Saturday night, 2-0 and cut the Tribe?s first place lead in the IL West Division to two games.

Josh Hancock (5-3) picked up the win for the Red Barons and Pedro Liriano (2-2) suffered the loss for the Tribe. Indianapolis outhit the Red Barons 10-9. Ryan Knox produced two hits and Luis Figueroa added three hits for the visitors.

QUOTES:

Red Barons first baseman and former Indian Jim Rushford:

?It?s just coincidental that I got the hits off Liriano,? Rushford said. ?I keep making adjustments every day and tonight it helped a lot. It?s a little funny to play against the Indians. You want to do well. It?s good to see everyone. I loved playing in Indianapolis, but Milwaukee decided not to bring me back for whatever reason. The Brewers were my first team. I?ve made good friends and there are good guys playing for the Indians. I?m just glad that I get to play baseball and play as long as I can.?

Indians manager Cecil Cooper on his team?s performance:

?We had a number of opportunities to score runs and get back in the game,? said Cooper. ?We had some terrible approaches to getting things done. I thought our defense played extremely well, but our pitching broke down a bit.?

NOTES:

RHP Jeff Farnsworth signed a free agent contract and joined the Tribe for tonight?s game with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 28-year-old Farnsworth had been pitching for Atlantic City of the Independent Atlantic League, where he posted a 2-0 record and 2.96 ERA with three walks and 19 strike outs in 27.1 innings pitched.

The 6-2, 195-pound Farnsworth pitched for the Detroit Tigers in 2002, finishing with a 2-3 record and 5.79 ERA in 44 appearances. Last season, he pitched for Double-A Erie, posting a 3-3 record and 3.21 ERA in eight games.

Indianapolis is 2-3 on the roadtrip and will return to Victory Field on Thursday, June 3.

Final: Mobile (Padres) 9, Huntsville 3

Maybe the new scoreboard kept the fans entertained if the game results didn't...

Huntsville Box Score:

Jeff Housman's pitching line not quite as bad we thought it might be; pinch-hitter Chris Saenz is now 6-for-15 at the plate this season -- with Prince Fielder suspended and Manager Frank Kremblas not wanting to "waste" backup catcher Joel Alvarado, Saenz was the first bat off the bench tonight -- get this team another bat, Reid!

Hopefully Jeff Housman's OK, he was allowed to bat for himself in the 4th, grounding into a double play -- get this team another bat, Reid! -- and then did not come out for the fifth. Unless BayBear batters worked the count extremely well, not sure why Jeff's outing was so brief...

Final: Inland Empire (Mariners) 8, High Desert 7

Ugh -- standing on second base with no one out in the ninth, Travis Hinton attempted to tag up to third on a fly ball to right -- double play, then a K ends the game.

The winning run reached base for the 66ers when Enrique Cruz misplayed (not ruled an error, however) a grounder.

El grande stinko night for the affiliates tonight...

Huntsville has sort of turned into last year's High Desert as far as players playing out of position and some stinky lineup combos. Raburn playing first? C'mon. Barnwell batting above #7? C'mon. MB is right, this team really needs some bats. There is no reason for them to be under-maned.

And like I told Patrick at FanFest, I kind of like that Heether kid. He hits for some pretty decent power, and walks enough to keep his OBP pretty decent when his average slips. Could be a sleeper in the next few years, and right now he's our best third base prospect.

That's why he's TH the DH, not TH the baserunner. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I don't mean to be facetious at all when stating that Frank wasn't keeping his last guy on the bench. Rather, he was sending up the better hitter. Alvarado is a statue at the plate, Saenz can drive the ball(as he has already proved this year).

As far as the absolutely disappointing Snapper ending, Guilder got a case of the "yips" when we were one out away from winning a game despite giving up 17 hits. Bases loaded bottom of the ninth with two outs. A slow roller is hit to Guilder's right. He seemed to be in between wanting to tag the runner going to second, flip the ball to SS or throwing out the runner at 1B. He bobbled the ball and accomplished neither. On the very next pitch, ball hit to his left by a fast runner. If he squares his body to 1B, he gets the guy. Instead, he hurries the throw and sends a palmball past Ramirez. Earlier in the game(and, I almost hate to go down this path), Rodriguez should have been given another error on a soft hit one-hopper that he mishandled. Moss lost a ball in the lights that eventually lead to a run. Anderson got picked off first with nobody out, only to see Palmisano and Rottino get consecutive hits afterward. That really hurt. It was a game we should have won in spite of ourselves, but didn't. It really stung as the three teams in front of us all lost. Better luck tomorrow. Good night.
