Interesting to use Eveland for only a bit in one game, rather than starting in the other. Gotta wonder if for some reason they have him pegged to go an inning or so in the next one.

Also great to see Murray with another multi-hit game. Is that two or three recently? Unfortunately this time Moss didn't also have a good game

Final: Game Two, West Michigan (Tigers) 7, Beloit 2

The Whitecaps salvage a split by hammering 6'5" RHP Greg Moreira to the tune of 6 runs on 12 hits and 3 walks in 5 and a third. Two hits for new Brewerfan-favorite Adam Heether and a home run by Josh Murray (his first) were the offensive highlights, but the Snappers managed only that one extra-base hit (and only 5 hits total, and no walks).

West Michigan's Chris Steinborn, a LHP drafted in the 36th round in 2002, tossed a complete game and lowered his ERA to 2.69.

Final: Indianapolis 2, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 1

The pitching portion of today's box score is beautiful:

IP H R ER BB SO ERA ------------------------------------------------------ Clint Weibl (W 1-0) 6.0 4 1 1 0 6 1.13 Dan Reichert 2.0 1 0 0 2 4 1.15 Jason Childers (S 14) 1.0 0 0 0 0 0 1.50

How 'bout those ERAs, huh?

Three singles for Ryan Knox, doubles by Luis Figueroa and Steve Scarborough, and a triple by Chris Macgruder were the offensive highlights. Apparently Jeff Liefer is indeed human, 'cause he went 0-for-4 to drop his batting average to .337.

Indianapolis Postgame Notes:

Chris Magruder ignited a two-run rally in the seventh inning as the Indians defeated Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Monday night, 2-1. Magruder tripled, Mark Johnson was hit by a pitch, then both scored on Luis Figueroa?s two-run double.

Clint Weibl (1-0), making his first start for the Indians since being acquired from independent Long Island, picked up the victory, pitching six strong innings. Weibl allowed a single run off a solo homer from Jorge Padilla (2) in the Red Barons? fifth inning.

Dan Reichert pitched two innings in relief. In the seventh, Reichert loaded the bases, allowing a hit, walking two hitters and throwing two wild pitches. He got out of the jam with consecutive strikeouts of Mark Budzinski and Anderson Machado. In the eighth, the Tribe reliever struck out two of the three batters he faced.

Jason Childers hit the first batter he faced (Mark Smith) in the ninth, and then engineered a double play, before retiring the side for his 14th save, a league best shared with Richmond?s Matt Whiteside.

"We were staying away from him (Smith)," Childers said in a release issued by the team. "I was going to bust him inside with a fastball and it just ran in on him and hit him. That's not the way that I wanted to start the inning. He has power. I wanted to keep him off base.

"After (hitting) Smith, I tried to get my composure back."

Indianapolis improves to 28-21; the Red Barons fall to 29-21.

Additional Beloit details from the Whitecaps' Site:

The West Michigan Whitecaps can finally come home. The Whitecaps concluded their longest road trip of the season on Monday by splitting a doubleheader with the Beloit Snappers in Wisconsin - dropping the first game, 4-3, before winning the second game, 7-2. The Whitecaps finish the 12-day road trip with a 4-7 record.

In game one, the Whitecaps trailed 3-1 and were down to their final out when an infield single by Juan Francia and a throwing error on the same play allowed the tying runs to score. The Snappers then won it in the eighth on two singles and a bounce out in a game that was delayed three times by rain.

Then in game two, the 'Caps came out swinging with two runs in the first and two more in the third for a 4-0 lead. Vince Blue's two-run double in the sixth and Kurt Piantek's homer in the seventh concluded the 'Caps scoring. Starting pitcher Chris Steinborn was outstanding as he threw the first complete game victory of the season. Steinborn limited Beloit to just five hits with a late two-run homer costing him his shutout.

Well just doing a quick look at Heether. So far this year his K's are up slightly and his walks are down slightly (could easily be random changes), but he's making a much higher quality of contact with much more power and a large boost in batting average. For the Midwest league the line looks solid, and while techinically a "repeater" he hasn't come close to a full season's worth of ABs at that level. Drafted out of college it's certainly possible that last year's ~180ABs were his adjustment period. Still he's 22 in A ball with a stat profile not unlike dozens of others in the Wes Helms mode. I'm guessing he gets a full year at Beloit. Clearly our top 3rd base prospect. 4 years ago he'd be rocketing up the Power 50 and possibly cracking the top 20. No he has to fight to get into the 40's.

Tough day for baseball as the rain came and went all day. Almost blew away the victory in game 1. 3-1 and a soft hit, almost a bunt down 3rd base line and Eveland fielded it...his feet weren't set as his throw sailed into the right field bullpen...2 score.

Snappers didn't win it until after a lengthy rain delay and a bit of luck. Truffles on first. Money sends him and Murray swings with a blooper towards 2nd. Problem was the 2 bagger was covering second on the steal attempt and couldn't get back in time to make the routine catch. Truffles on 3rd. He would score on a Drew Anderson bouncer to second as the play at home had no chance at catching the speedy Truffles at home.

Montalbo looked pretty good. He seemed to get shaken when a man got on base. As if he stopped doing what was successful and started to pitch around every batter after that which would lead to a walk.

Moreira suffered a Pena like outing as West Michigan just smacked the crap out of it to every field. He was hit harder than Pena though. More shots to the wall, etc.

Heether didn't look the best...after the 2dinger performance on Saturday, today his head was flying around as he looked to be swinging for the fences. So needless to say he struck out a few times.

Drew and Vinny with some nice diving catches in the outfield today and Moss should have had two if he would have dove. He seems really timid out there.

Guilder not playing today....not sure why not, maybe punishment. The only sighting was when he warmed up Grybash as the catcher.

Pretty small crowd due to the weather unfortunately.

Nice to see Murray getting some hits as the potential is definately there.

Anyone notice Scranton-Wilksboro's line-up has a strong Milwaukee flavor?

M.Budzinski CF

A.Machado SS

L.Collier 3B

J.Rushford 1B

M.Smith LF

I was going to bring up Guilder's "grounding" by d money(no relation) but you beat me to the punch. I can't help but wonder if he missed a sign in the 9th on Friday and bunted when he should have done something else. Undoubtedly, the guy cost us a game, but I don't think PHYSICAL errors deserve that type of punishment. The kid has been pretty solid all year. Therefore, maybe(?) a mental error put Don over the edge. Just guessing.

I forgot to mention (again) how much I hate the piggyback system and how Don misuses it. Why, when you are fighting for a playoff spot, do you have Eveland pitch two innings of the first game and hand over the entire second game to(IMHO) an inferior pitcher like Morreira? Makes no sense.

It's hell to get old, you forget what you want to say. At any rate, I counted at least three balls yesterday that a more rangy and quicker SS would have at least prevented from going into the outfield that Murray didn't touch. Not so sure his future(assuming there is one) is at that position. Others have mentioned a possible switch to 3B. Based on what I saw yesterday, that might not be a bad long-term idea.

I agree with Murray being a future 3rd baseman. Said it last year when I saw him...his range isn't great for a SS and his throwing motion just seems better at third...an over the top style...reminds me of Duncan from Battle Creek. Most SS seem to be slingers with the ball while Murray has to almost "pitch" it there.

I was wondering why Murray didn't dive for some of those grounders through the hole. He could have made it to most of them with a dive.
