Ninth inning "rally" wasn't enough today...

Beloit Box Score:

I wish the line was prettier for RHP Tommy Hawk's Beloit debut; no walks drawn a bummer; suddenly Manny Ramirez is hitting .281; another Hawk, Derek, pitched for Dayton...

Final: Visalia (Rockies) 9, High Desert 7

Should we be surprised by this score? Or just mad? Now at 20-37, this season is taking on 2003 proportions, which is just unthinkable...

High Desert Game Summary (Visalia Site):

The Oaks went until the fifth inning before getting their first hit, but managed to overcome a 6-0 deficit for a 9-7 victory to complete a three game sweep of High Desert.

Visalia has now won nine in a row over the Mavericks, while High Desert has dropped eight straight. Ben Crockett, who allowed five runs on five hits including a two-run homer by Froilan Villanueva in the first inning, settled down to allow just two hits after the second inning. At one point, Crocket retired ten in a row and pitched into the seventh inning, which helped rest the Oaks pitching staff after nine pitchers were used in the first two games of the series. Chris Young relieved Crockett and threw 1.2 scoreless innings to earn the win. He was helped by a double play that ended the top of the eighth. With Visalia trailing 6-4 and Troy Fansworth at third base, Scott Candelaria hit a fly ball to right that was caught by Sean Barker. Farnsworth tagged up, but Barker?s throw beat him to the plate by several feet. Catcher Kevin Reinking held onto the ball through a collision with Farnsworth for the final out of the inning.

Visalia scored its first run in the fourth thanks to an error by first baseman Travis Hinton that allowed K. J. Hendricks to reach base. Hendricks then stole second and moved to third on a throw to center by the catcher. He then scored on a ground out to first by Jeff Baker and the lead was trimmed to 6-1. The inning ended and the Oaks were still without a hit against David Bradley, who retired 13 of the first 14 batters he faced with Hendricks as the only exception.

Ryan Spilborghs had the first Visalia hit of the game, a single to left with one out in the fifth. Visalia closed the lead to two in the sixth with three runs, the last of which scored on a double by Ryan Spilborghs to make the score 6-4. Following the double play to end the top of the eighth, Hector Tena led off with his second home run of the season in the bottom of the inning and High Desert?s lead was down to 6-5. Then next batter, Jeff Baker walked, moved to second on a wild pitch, then scored on Chris Fallon?s double to tie the score, 6-6. Jeff Salazar was put in to pinch run for Fallon and moved to third on a bunt sacrifice by Barker. A sacrifice fly to center by Spilborghs drove in Salazar to put Visalia on top, 7-6.

Two batters later, Brian Barre hit a two-run homer to make the lead 9-7. Mike Cosgrove gave up a run in the top of the ninth on Enrique Cruz? RBI single, but earned his 12th save of the year. It was the second straight game saved by Cosgrove.

Three in a Row: All three games in the sweep over High Desert were come from behind wins. The Oaks now have 16 come from behind victories this season.

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Indianapolis rallied for seven runs in the seventh inning Sunday afternoon to defeat the Rochester Red Wings, 13-5. The loss snapped a two-game losing skid, improving the Tribe to 30-24, Rochester falls to 29-27.

Indianapolis accumulated 13 hits with four players delivering multiple hits. Luis Figueroa picked up three hits, while Chris Magruder, Ryan Knox and Mark Johnson each had two hits.

Dan Reichert (3-0) picked up the win, throwing 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and walking two. Jason Childers finished the game, throwing two innings, giving up two hits, walking one and striking out one.

Beau Kemp (0-1) picked up the loss for the Red Wings. Kemp gave up four runs on two hits and walked two batters.

QUOTES:

Tribe infielder Luis Figueroa on his offensive performance:

"I put the ball in play today," said Figueroa. "I started hitting the ball hard and I found some holes. We just lost our concentration a little bit the last couple of days. We focused a little more today."

Mark Johnson, Tribe first baseman:

"I played a little first base at Charlotte in 2001," said Johnson. "I always have my best games at first base. Compared to catching, it?s like a truck has been lifted off your shoulders. You don?t have to be as sharp mentally and you can have some fun over there."

Tribe catcher Alex Delgado:

"Our pitching did a good job finishing the game today," said Delgado. "We played well today."

NOTES:

With the win, the Tribe evened the four-game series with Rochester at 2-2.

The Tribe is 16-11 at Victory Field.

Columbus defeated Buffalo Sunday and the Tribe remains in second place in the IL West Division, one game back.

Tribe shortstop Steve Scarborough (right) turns a double play during the second inning as Rochester runner Jason Kubel (left) slides. The Tribe used 13 hits to amass 13 runs and defeated Rochester 13-5. -- Rob Goebel / The Indianapolis Star

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

The script looked different right from the start. Losers of five straight, Huntsville finally broke through in a last-ditch bid to rejoin the first-half pennant chase. On Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium, the Stars scored three in the first and rallied from 5-3 down for a critical 6-5 win over Chattanooga (32-25). Huntsville (29-28) moved within 2 ½ games of Southern League West leader West Tenn, pending the outcome of West Tenn?s game at second-place Mobile Sunday night.

NOTE: West Tenn lost, Stars just two games back, but in third place -- MassBrew

Rickie Weeks served early notice this day would be different, launching a first-inning leadoff homer over three levels of billboard in left. After Tony Gwynn Jr. reached on an error, Prince Fielder doubled him to third. Dustin Moseley?s balk scored Gwynn and pushed Fielder to third. With two outs, Chris Barnwell delivered a run-scoring single for a 3-0 Stars lead.

Lookout Jessie Gutierrez cut the led to 3-1 with a second-inning solo shot, his third of the series. Then Chad Durham doubled in the third and William Bergolla doubled him home. Gutierrez led off the fourth with a double and Jeff Bannon walked. Andrew Beattie sacrificed them to second and third, and Jason Hill ripped a double into the leftfield corner, scoring both Gutierrez and Bannon. Beattie later drilled a sixth-inning solo shot to put the Lookouts up, 5-3.

In the Stars? sixth, Prince Fielder blasted a solo homer to left-center, with father ?Big Daddy? Cecil Fielder looking on. Fielder finished 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Brad Nelson followed with a double deep to left-center. Barnwell then singled in Nelson and took second on the throw home. Johnny Raburn promptly singled to plate Barnwell for a 6-5 Stars advantage.

After Huntsville fell behind 4-3, three relievers combined to hold off the potent Lookouts. Pete Zamora fanned one in a perfect fifth, and Jason Shelley (1-1) notched his first win with three solid frames, allowing only the Beattie homer while striking out four from the sixth through the eighth. John Novinsky, the Stars? best reliever in May, recorded his third save, tossing a perfect ninth. Moseley (2-1) suffered the loss, surrendering six runs, five earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts over six innings.

The Stars and Lookouts conclude the series Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium, when righty Tim Bausher (1-6, 3.67), if he clears waivers at noon Monday, takes the mound against Chattanooga right-hander Charlie Manning (3-3, 4.04). Game time is 7:05 p.m.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

FOILED AGAIN

If the Stars were determined to put an end to their five-game losing streak, and from the topsy-turvy start it was quite evident, they couldn't have found a better foil........Dustin Moseley, less than a week off the disabled list for a bad back, was one of five pitchers in Stars history last year to be beaten four times in one season (the others being Steve Foster, Derrin Ebert, Ricardo Palma, and Dennis Ulacia)....... Moseley came in with a 1.91 ERA, holding Southern League hitters to less than a .200 average in his first three innings, but from what I saw, and my opinion was concurred by people with more authority than I, that Moseley had nothing on his pitches, allowing the Stars to beat Moseley for the fifth time in two years.

Rickie Weeks, hitting .125 in his last 16 games, led off with his fourth home run of the year over three levels of billboards in left...... Suddenly, the Lookouts were looking like the Stars the past two games, and vice versa........ Tony Gwynn's ground ball was bobbled by shortstop Jeff Bannon, then on a 2-0 pitch to Prince Fielder, Gwynn took 2nd on a throwing error from catcher Jason Hill...... Fielder then belted a 2-1 pitch that was hit deep to right......... Gwynn held up to see if right fielder Chad Durham would make the catch, so he stayed close to the bag. Instead, the ball hit the base of the wall in the right field corner, ricocheting perfectly to Durham. Gwynn could take only one base on Fielder's double....... Gwynn would score on a balk before Chris Barnwell's one-out single to short right field brought Fielder in to give the Stars an early 3-0 lead.

Against the top hitting team in the league, that was anything but secure........Jesse Gutierrez greeted Ryan Costello with a home run over the 1st wall in left, off the Edwin Watts Golf sign to the near left of the scoreboard, his third HR of this series....... In the 3rd inning, Chattanooga would come within a run after Chad Durham hit a two-out double down the left field line, travelling all the way to the Stars' bullpen. WIlliam Bergolla followed with a double to the base of the wall in left-center, scoring Durham....... 3-2.

The Lookouts went ahead in the 4th inning, Costello's final inning....... He would leave after only 55 pitches........ Gutierrez doubled to the gap in right-center between Gwynn and Raburn, all they way to the front of the Purity sign. Jeff Bannon walked on five pitches and Andrew Beattie sacrificed them into scoring position, setting up another double --- this one by Jason Hill into the left field corner, and the Lookouts led, 4-3.

What had started out so brightly, turned as overcast as the skies....... Moseley, after giving up Barnwell's RBI single in the 1st, retired 15 straight Huntsville batters --- four by strikeout and seven on the ground and one attempted bunt by Ozzie Chavez that casually fell into the glove of Moseley in the 2nd as if he were taking a soft toss from the catcher....... While Moseley found his groove, a two-out home run by Beattie off Jason Shelley in the 6th inning put the Lookouts ahead, 5-3, but the Stars erupted again, and just as they had in the first inning, it all began with a home run.

With Cecil Fielder watching from the press box, Prince blasted his 11th home run just clearing the wall in left-center, finishing his day with two extra-base hits in a game for the first time this season, and his first HR since May 23......... I think the Stars should invite Cecil more often to the Joe. Earlier in the year, Prince hit two HRs in one game in his presence (or near-presence. His first HR that day was heard by Cecil on the radio while still in the parking lot).......

Brad Nelson then hit an 0-1 pitch deep to the track in left-center. Beattie lost sight of it temporarily, and the ball dropped in front of him for a double. Barnwell then tied the game with a sharply hit single to right on a 1-1 pitch. Nelson scored ahead of the throw from Durham, allowing Barney to take 2nd....... Johnny Raburn then got enough of an 0-1 change to bloop it into center for a short hit. Off on the pitch, Barnwell sped across the plate to give the Stars a 6-5 lead........ Jason Shelley and John Novinsky closed the door on the Lookouts. After giving up that home run to Beattie, the pair retired 10 of 12 Chattanooga hitters, allowing pinch-hitter Travis Wilson to reach in the 7th on a throwing error by Ozzie Chavez and a single by --- who else -- Gutierrez in the 8th......... Gutierrez is 7-for-13 in this series and 9-for-24 (.375) for the season against the Stars.

Nestor Corredor made his debut for the Stars in this game, and his stateside debut, as well....... He struck out his first time up on a fastball to end the 1st, and flied out twice to center. Doesn't seem to have much bat speed. He'll be wearing uniform # 41 for the time being. His fate seems to be held by what some feel is the impending return of Kade Johnson to the team. He has one more day left on the waiver wire......... Tim Bausher apparently cleared waivers and will start Monday against the Lookouts. I scoured the transactions for every league and every team in the minors and majors, and found no mention of him. Bausher (1-6, 3.67) will face right-hander Charlie Manning (3-3, 4.04).

Despite the Stars recent losing streak, they remain in the race, now two games in back of the Diamond Jaxx, who have graciously lost six of their last eight games...... They were beaten 2-1 Sunday in a rain-shortened game, and have one more game before they play Montgomery, who were 9½ games back a little more than a week ago, and now are just 6 games back. Their final game against Mobile, on Monday, starts at 12:35 PM....... As for me, the 2004 amateur baseball draft takes place at 11:50 AM, and that's what I'll tune it to for awhile on mlb.com (and brewerfan.net) ........

The Brewers, who made Rickie Weeks their # 1 choice last year, and chose Ben Sheets, Dave Krynzel, Mike Jones, and Prince Fielder in the past, may go after Rice University pitcher Philip Humber, one of a trio of very talented pitchers for the Owls, according to Baseball America....... The Brewers have the 5th pick in the first round..

Chris Barnwell is starting to turn it on....... After Sunday, his average was a high-water mark of .224. He's hit .306 this month and .244 since May, but not one extra-base hit since May 29..... Brad Nelson hit his 18th double of the season, 2nd behind Richard Lewis of the Diamond Jaxx among league leaders...... Nelson has struck out 61 times this year, and has 10 Ks in his last 25 ABs.

I've put up some new research on my link showing just where our golden boys --- Rickie Weeks, Tony Gwynn, Jr., and Prince Fielder --- have been hitting the ball for outs since May, which marks the downslide for at least two of the three....... It will show that Prince Fielder has hit into 11 double plays since May, and all three hitters, surprisingly have flied out more often to the opposite field than anyone would have guessed. Fly outs are broken down to left, center, and right and grounders to the left side, middle, and right side. Also studied were pop outs, line outs, and strikeouts...... More than 2/3 of Fielder's strikeouts were on the road.

Beloit Game Summary (Dayton Site):

Fortunately, the Dayton Dragons (24-33) have short memories. None of the disappointment from Saturday night?s 9-7 loss at the hands of the Beloit Snappers (30-27) and the improbable top of the ninth melt down seemed to be lingering around Fifth Third Field Sunday afternoon for the third game of the four game series. The Dragons snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning with five runs and picked up a 7-4 victory in front of 8,460 fans.

The Dragons played small ball in both the first and the fourth innings taking a 2-0 lead into the top half of the fifth. With one down in the Dayton first, Snapper starter Dana Eveland walked Luis Bolivar on four straight and put the Dragons shortstop on first. After Joey Votto doubled of the wall in right center, Dayton was in business with second and third and one down for Walter Olmstead. The third baseman picked up the first of his four RBI on the day with a ground out to second and the Dragons led 1-0. A Votto walk to lead off the fourth and a hit and run single by Olmstead put runners on the corners for Ben Himes. Himes lifted a SAC fly to right field that scored Votto from third and the lead was 2-0.

The Snappers picked up six hits off Dayton starter Brock Till but couldn?t string together a run scoring inning until the fifth, when Josh Murray homered to left center to cut the deficit to 2-1. That would be all that Beloit would get off Till who got out of the inning throwing a 4-6-3 double play. In five innings Till struck out one and hit one batter, but issued no walks and picked up a no decision on the afternoon.

Beloit tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth, picking up a run off Dragons reliever Derek Hawk. A lead off double by Steve Moss and a ground out had the Snapper?s center fielder at third with one down in the inning. Lou Palmisano tied the game up with a fly ball to center field for a SAC fly and his 32nd RBI of the season.

Snapper right hander Thomas Hawk (L, 0-1) made his Midwest League debut in the ball game beginning the sixth inning and retiring the Dragons without a run crossing the plate.

The seventh inning proved to be a different story as the pitcher got himself in trouble with free passes. Beloit pitching on the day walked five Dragons hitters and allowed four to cross home, which proved to be the difference in the game. Back-to-back one out walks to Will Hudson and Chris Dickerson put Dayton in business for Bolivar. Hawk got Bolivar to foul out to the catcher for the second out of the inning but failed to close the deal, allowing a two out RBI single to Votto to give the Dragons a 3-2 lead. With two down and two on, Olmstead broke out the whoopin? stick and slammed a three run HR down the line in right field to push the advantage to 6-2. Olmstead?s fifth round tripper of the season gave him four RBI on the day, a season high. Not to be out done, Himes followed Olmstead?s shot with a solo HR as the Dragons went back-to-back in the inning for a 7-2 lead.

The Snappers tried to mount a second consecutive late inning comeback with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings but the rally fell short. David Shafer (W, 4-1) tossed the final three innings and allowed two runs; a run scoring double play ball in the eighth and a solo HR to Manuel Ramirez in the ninth. Shafer allowed two earned runs on four hits and struck out three in picking up the victory.

Game three of the four game series between the Dragons and Snappers is Monday night at Fifth Third Field, with a 7:00 PM first pitch (6:00 Central). The Dragons will start RHP Rainer Feliz; Beloit will counter with RHP Carlos Villanueva.

As I said in the Power 50 thread, now that Moss is getting regular playing time his production is climbing. It's time to bump one of those outfielders up to HD (Rottino) so Moss can get back in the groove.

Huntsville Times Game Story:

Slipping the slide

Stars jump right back into division race after stopping five-game skid

By PAUL GATTIS

Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com

And now, after a nearly week-long hiatus, the Huntsville Stars return to the Southern League Western Division pennant race.

"That was awesome," Stars third baseman Chris Barnwell said.

Yes, after losing five in a row, the Stars stood Sunday and resumed chasing West Tenn for the title of the season's first half, which now has two weeks remaining.

Following Sunday's 6-5 win over Chattanooga before an announced crowd of 2,318 at Joe Davis Stadium, the Stars inched within two games of the front-running Diamond Jaxx.

West Tenn lost 2-1 Sunday to Mobile.

"We really needed to get a win," said Barnwell, who was 2-for-4 and knocked in the tying run in the sixth inning with a single and then came around to score the winning run on Johnny Raburn's single.

"We could've (gotten back into the race) earlier, but we've still got time."

That's true, but the clock was beginning to tick rather loudly as the Stars endured the five-game losing streak - which was made worse by the fact that the Stars were outscored 36-5 during the skid, including two shutouts.

But the offensive drought ended with a certain immediacy Sunday when leadoff hitter Rickie Weeks opened the bottom of the first with a long home run to left field.

In fact, the first three Stars batters of the game scored. And even as the Stars eventually surrendered that 3-0 lead to trail 5-3, they scored three runs in the sixth to win.

Finally.

"We've obviously been struggling offensively for a while," Stars manager Frank Kremblas said. "So it was good for the guys to get some runs."

While bemoaning the slump, though, Kremblas also pointed out that the Stars have faced a string of quality pitchers that have contributed to that slump.

But the Stars finally torched one of those talented pitchers Sunday. Chattanooga starter Dustin Moseley, who was a first-round draft pick in 2000 and had held opponents to a .163 batting average in 281/3 innings, gave up seven hits and six runs in six innings.

Moseley (2-1) was both good and bad. He allowed three runs in the first, then retired 15 straight batters, then threw a home run ball to Prince Fielder with one out in the sixth that ignited the Stars' game-winning rally.

"He's good," Kremblas said of Moseley. "I saw him a lot last year. I like him. He just got some pitches up."

While Moseley rode his peaks and valleys, the Stars bullpen was spectacular. After starter Ryan Costello allowed four runs on five hits in four innings, the combo of Pete Zamora, Jason Shelley and John Novinsky held the Lookouts to one run on two hits in five innings.

Shelley (1-1) got the win, pitching three innings and allowing only a home run to Andrew Beattie. Novinsky pitched a perfect ninth inning for his third save.

"They really pitched well and held them down and gave us a chance to get back in it," Barnwell said of the bullpen.

And into the pennant race, too.

"We needed to get it going," Barnwell said. "We're all trying to win the first half. What's the point of busting your hump if you're not?"
