Old friend Jim Rushford heads into Indianapolis tonight with some fresh International League hardware:

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre?s JIM RUSHFORD only appeared in four games this past week, but hit safely in each contest to earn Batter-of-the-Week honors. The Chicago native faced his former Indianapolis teammates last Tuesday and led the Red Barons to a 4-2 victory by doubling twice and scoring a run. After a Wednesday off day, Scranton/WB opened up a four-game set with Louisville on Thursday. Rushford posted his first four-hit game of the season with a perfect day at the plate in the Red Barons? 7-6 loss in the opener. He had two singles, a pair of doubles and a walk and scored two runs in the defeat. On Friday, Jim had a two-run double in the fifth inning (his fifth two-bagger in the three days) to lead the Red Barons to a 6-5 win over the Bats. Rain postponed Saturday?s game to set up a Sunday doubleheader. The left-handed Rushford led the Red Barons to a 6-0 win in the opener with a pair of RBI-singles in another perfect game at the plate (he was 3-3). The San Diego resident sat out the nightcap (a 1-0 Scranton/WB victory) but finished the week with an impressive .714 average, boosting his season mark by 31 points. The 30-year-old Rushford is tied with Lou Collier for the team?s batting lead - both are tied for ninth among IL batters. He is tied for sixth among all IL batters with 62 hits.

Rushford signed with Philadelphia in the off-season after spending much of the previous two seasons with Indianapolis. He hit .311 (5th in the IL) with 9 HR and 50 RBI for the Indians in 2003, one season after earning the club?s MVP Award for his .316/7/68 performance in 2002. After going undrafted out of San Diego State University, Rushford bounced around several independent Leagues before being signed by Milwaukee for the 2001 season. He paid immediate dividends, leading all Minor League players with a .354 batting average that year.

batman, toby, or others, would someone try to listen in on the Huntsville pre-game tonight for Jason Belcher post-trade talk and any news on upcoming roster decisions? 6:50 PM Central at the link above -- thanks!

Don't hope for too much. Mr. Portnoy is not feeling well at all (I talked to him today) and probably won't be on air tonight. Bryan Neece (subbing tonight) is not a fountain of news and information. He's just a balls and strikes announcer.

Reid, do you know what you're doing?

FYI, Sarfate is pitching today.

Knox is back at AA as well replacing Belcher.

Knox with a 2 run double after Prince singled and Nelson doubled.

Announcer mentioned the trade and DIDNT mention a PTBNL as a part of it, just Bergeron. HMMM!!!!!!

Barnwell just singled Knox in, 3-0 stars. 2 out still.

Portnoy is announcing and is talking about how big of an upside Rogers has. Said he talked to some scouts who said that he has the most upside of any HS pitcher theyve seen in a while.

Chat with a couple of runs in the top of the 2nd. Triple scored a run after Sarfate walked a guy, not sure how they got the other run.

3-2

I figured that Hendrickson would be starting for Indy tonight considering this is 4 days of rest since wednesday, his last start.

Whoever or whomever is pitching tonight is doing a good job so far as Indy is up 1-0 in the 5th. Anyone have any idea who is pitching?

In progress: Huntsville 3, Chattanooga (Reds) 2, after four innings

If the Stars can hang on, they would trail both West Tenn and Mobile by just one game in the first half standings (the first half schedule ends June 20th)...

The Lookouts just scored a pair to take the lead. Reggie Rivard is on to pitch with a man on second.

EDIT: First pitch double to right-center. 5-3 Lookouts.

BTW, Robert Portnoy is out of commission.

Any idea if the Phelps-to-closer move is long-term or not? I might have missed it on another Link Report or thread... if so, point me in that direction.

If not, I must say that this is an interesting move. Travis has struggled as a starter this year and doesn't fit the typical closer profile (not as much velocity or any overpowering pitches as one would probably like). Still, he could be a useful relief pitcher if he can right the ship a la Matt Kinney. Given his previous success in the big leagues, I hope they give him a lot of opportunities to succeed again... if he doesn't, so be it. But I hope Melvin/Nichols don't give up on him after a rough start to the 2004 campaign that was hampered by shoulder problems.

The roster moves over the last week or so can't be real appreciated by our affiliates. We've jacked the closers at both Indy and Huntsville, lost one of the better hitters Huntsville had and kept them woefully short of position players, and maybe took away their starting catcher (and when the replacement is Joel Alvarado, it doesn't matter how bad Kade Johnson has been).

For once, the High Desert folks have been relatively well taken care of.

With Jorge De La Rosa struggling I suggest taking a week or two shortening up his arm and installing him as the Indians closer for a month or so to

A) See if he can improve his control by working in short stints

B) Regain confidence in his stuff with hopes of one day maybe going back to the starting rotation

I am in no way giving up hope on De La Rosa as a starter, I think that he has the arsenal to be very successful, but I also think that he has the closer mentality.

I say give the kid a shot to have a successful season by allowing him the opportunity to close ballgames. If its his knack this year he might find himself in a major league bullpen very soon. If he doesn't really fit you just plug him back in as a long reliever to end the season and prepare him to continue his career as a starter in 2005.

Indy has a great shot at winning big this year but De La Rosa hasn't exactly helped the team through the starting rotation. Instead of demoting him to AA give him a shot to becoming the "next John Rocker" and tear some AAA hitters apart.

He's still young and I realize that the bullpen is always option B when a guy has starter potential...but how many more losses can Jorge take? Im just thinking that this would provide him the opportunity to be successful in 2004 and help Indy at the same time. (I think hes on the DL at this time, but maybe when he comes back)

I attended the Beloit-Dayton game tonight hoping to catch Lou catch. Not only was he not behind the plate, he didn't DH nor even suit up. For all I know, he wasn't in Dayton. Anyone have any idea where Lou might be? On his way to High Desert?

Interesting. Thanks for the scoop badgerdan. Maybe we will see a ripple effect of catching promotions as some have guessed. At least I hope so, I'd hate to see another one of our top prospects down & out due to injury.

Beloit Game Summary (from the Dayton Site):

Adam Heether luckily gets the better of a nasty home plate collision...

The elements of pitching that had been vastly improved for the Dayton Dragons (24-34) on the team?s current home stand disappeared in game three of the four game series with the Beloit Snappers (31-27) on Monday night. Dragons pitching walked eight Snappers, tied a franchise record with four hit batsmen and uncorked two wild pitches as the Snappers took a 2-1 series edge with a 10-5 win in front of 7,905 at Fifth Third Field.

Dayton starter Rainer Feliz (L, 0-2) looked sharp in the top half of the first inning setting Beloit down in order. The top half of the second inning and again in the third, the right hander had a tough time consistently finding the plate as the Snappers jumped out to a 5-0 lead. Beloit?s first run came courtesy of a bases load walk of Will Lewis with two out in the second to give the visitors the 1-0 lead. A hit batsman, a walk and a single loaded the bases with none out in the third for Manuel Ramirez who picked up two RBI on a single for a 3-0 lead. A Josh Murray SAC fly and another RBI single by Tim Marks put Beloit in front 5-0 after two and a half innings.

Feliz was lifted after the third in favor of Alexander Farfan. Farfan?s only inning of work got off to a rocky start as well with a lead off walk and an error by Dayton third baseman Walter Olmstead. Drew Anderson?s SAC fly gave Beloit a 6-0 lead as Terry Trofholz scored from third. After Farfan?s second walk of the inning, a free pass to Adam Heether, Vinny Rottino delivered his team leading 38th RBI with a single that scored Steve Moss and the Snappers led 7-0.

The Dragons picked up two free passes in the bottom of the fourth inning and had first and second with one down for Olmstead. The Dayton third baseman atoned for his earlier error with his second three run homer in as many games. Olmstead lifted a Greg Moreira (W, 4-2) pitch over the wall in right center for his sixth home run of the season and the lead was cut to 7-3. The HR would be the only runs the Dragons would manage off the Beloit starter who threw 5.2 innings of three hit baseball. Moreira struck out seven and allowed two walks and a hit batsman before getting the hook in the bottom of the sixth with two out.

Josh Thigpen was next on the bump for the Dragons and he began his night by hitting Heether with a pitch. The Snappers DH was involved in a nasty home plate collision in the second inning that forced Dayton catcher Chris Kroski out of the game with what was later diagnosed as a broken tibia. With one down, Ramirez drew a walk and the Snappers had runners at first and second base. With two down in the inning, Marks picked up his second and third RBI of the game on a double into the left field corner that cleared the bases and the Snappers led 9-3.

Beloit took a 10-3 lead to the bottom of the ninth inning after plating the club?s final run off Carlos Guevara in the top of the ninth. Anderson added his second RBI of the game on another SAC fly that scored Will Lewis, who led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a Trofholz single.

The Dragons tired to mount a comeback in the bottom of the ninth inning off Snappers reliever Ty Taubenhiem. Kyle Smith picked up a one out double and moved to third on Miguel Perez?s single up the middle. With two down, Will Hudson and Chris Dickerson picked up back-to-back RBI singles that got Dayton to within 10-5. The Dragons comeback fell short as Luis Bolivar flew out to center field to close out the game.

The Dragons and Snappers wrap up the four game series Tuesday night at Fifth Third Field, with a 7:00 PM first pitch. The Dragons will start LHP Tyler Pelland; Beloit will counter with RHP Carlos Villanueva.

i vote fully for Dan Boyd and Manny Parra..

there might be someone a little more deserving than parra in high desert right now, but i'd just assume get him out of there..

boyd is, i think, 25, and has nothing left to prove at High A

i also wouldnt mind seeing callix and rickie weeks switching spaces right now....callix is hotter than hot at the moment...and his 32/20 bb/k ratio is just plain sick

i dunno if he is pulling a billy hall on us at High Desert, but he's got me watching right now...

This minor league season is turning ugly quickly for Nichols and Melvin on their roster responsibility front. Phelps as a new closer in AAA after a starter-40 man roster deal in the offseason, Novinsky as a de facto closer in AA, Sarfate going on an inexcusable short rest, not enough position players in Huntsville (also inexcusable), too many pitchers up and down the organization, not enough spots in Arizona, not enough outfielders organization-wide, stupid spring releases/trades (Parker, Carpeneter, Machado, Esparragoza).

I'm just plain 'ol not impressed.
