Birmingham scores 3 in the top of the 1st off Jones- 2 hits, 2 walks, and an error.

Huntsville scores 1 in the bottom of the 1st. Weeks HBP (#18), Nelson RBI single.

Jones is out due to pitch count limitations after 33 pitches.. Housman replaces him after 2 are out in the top of the second.

Birmingham scored twice more in the 3rd.

Another run for Birmingham in the 6th.

6-1 Barons after 5 1/2 innings.

How many days before Nelson is promoted to Indy? This is the only major prospect move that I would endorse right now. Move Nelson at the break. I was leaning towards moving Weeks and maybe Gwynn down to HD. The more I think about it, let them play in Hville for an entire season. I think the routine and consistent coaching for an entire season will pay off. Ditto for most of the pitchers. I can definitely see Saenz moving to Indy, but that's it. When he's moved up, bring Parra up from HD in his place. Sound like a plan?

I'd have to say there's no pressing reason to promote Nelson. He's doing well at Huntsville, but isn't totally destroying the league and his K rate is quite high. He's got stuff to work on, and worse yet it contributes to a potential problem of what to do with the Corner OFs? If you promote Nelson and he does hit well in AAA then how do you get MLB time right out of the gate next year for Jenkins, Hart and Nelson? Promoting Saenz has some merit though I'd have to think about it longer since our pitching situation is more complex and I'm not as sure about the risk/rewards for promoting him.

Wouldn't that be a positive if Nelson could hit well this year in Indy? I wouldn't make decisions based on preventing someone from being "too good too fast." Secondly, why would Nelson have to be in Milwaukee right out of the gate next year? He can start out back in Indy. If he's still doing well, that's a good problem to have. I guess my bottom line is that it looks like he's ready. Or at least I'll say that if he keeps this up until the break. Sure he can work on cutting down on his Ks, but that's Brad Nelson. He'll always have some strike-outs. I can live with that.

First off I would promote Kade Johnson. Perhaps they need to play him a bit less, too, but he needs to be given a last chance, and might as well see if he can do adequately in Indy. Saenz could go to Indy around July 1st, but a full year in AA wouldn't hurt.

I would consider promoting Nelson if he's at around .290+ and 20+ hr come August 1st. The problem is that Bergeron, Nunnally, Magruder, and Hart are all in Indy now, and all could contribute in the major leagues if needed. Keeping Nelson in AA for the season might not be a bad idea.

I'd also consider promoting Morris from HD. I'd leave Hinton and Vandenberg there for the whole year. Parra should be in Huntsville soon.

Huntsville loses 8-3. A 2 run blast by Barny was the only other offense they could manage.

Gwynn picked off first and CS (The pick off came right before Nelson hit a double).

Shakey D throughout.

Houseman goes 6 2/3 innings, with 7 hits and 4 runs.

Fielder has gone 14 for 30 over his last 7 games.

man,

its so good to see Jones back on the mound.

I could care less about his results today.

Im praying he can stay healthy the rest of this year. Please Frank, take it VERY VERY SLOW with Mike the rest of this year. Similar with what they are doing with Parra.

Question, when are we expecting to see Diggins and Bruso?

I just want to follow up on Dave Weiser's rant about Weeks and Fielder (See Yesterdays game links).

I walked out on todays game because of something similar.

Losing 7-1, Weeks & Fielder messed up a routine pop up foul ball between them. They then stood for a couple of minutes and laughed it up in front of the fans. Apparently messing up a chance for an out is just the funniest thing ever and they don't mind the fans knowing they think that way!

Ricky is probably too concerned about his press conference tomorrow to announce his new shoe deal, to worry about silly things like fielding and fans.

We keep hearing that Reid is big on character. Kremblas obviously has no control over these guys, so perhaps its time for senior management to practice what it preaches and shake things up a little at Huntsville.

Scoring this game as 1 error to us was absolutely unbelievable. Both Weeks,Gwynn and Alverado all had clear cut errors and that isn't counting quite a few that you could rule either way.

The official scorer is the only guy having a worse game than most of the team!

My counterpoint FVBrewerfan was that Nelson isn't hitting so well that he has to be promoted. The only way promoting Nelson helps the team is if Corey falls flat and Nelson tears it up or both do well and someone offers us a great package for Jenkins (terribly unlikely). The scenario's for bad things happen outweigh the good ones both in number and likelihood.

Brad and Corey bat from opposite sides of the plate, so I can envision a scenario where they would platoon for a while. At some point, though, there is a distinct probability that the Hart/Nelson combo will be better than Jenkins/Hart or Jenkins/Nelson. Them's the breaks... at the time of Jenkins' signing, Nelson was still a pretty big question mark.

I don't think Brad has necessarily earned a promotion yet, but he is certainly raking.

I totally agree. If I lived down there Id get seats right by first base and let them have it when the pitcher is warming up between innings.

These kids dont realize the chance theyve been given in life, playing baseball for millions of dollars, while guys like you and me bust are asses just to watch them and pay money to do so.

I agree that senior management needs to get their asses in gear as well. Maybe Yost and Kremblas should switch places for a couple of weeks. If Yost is good at onething, its making sure things like laughing at mistakes never happens, and if it does, grab some pine.

Im glad that two questionable defensive players aren't beating themselves up over a few mental errors in the field. Mistakes happen and their ability to laugh it off shows me that they are willing to forget about their mistake and go on with the next play. No sense in dwelling on an error. I disbelieve that an attidude like that would blemish either player as bad character guys.

I understand your concern though but things will eventually get better. Thats why the play the game. Even though you throw down 2 star players on your batting order you aren't guarinteed a win. This makes things exciting for the Huntsville fans as they look for a first half championship.

When two of your three top prospects earn comparisons to Alex Sanchez and Izzy Alcantara, I think it's time to panic.

Uncool.

I disagree with that statement 1000%. These guys arent cornerbacks in football where you need to forget the last play.

You should NEVER laugh after making a mistake such as an error, NEVER! Thats called not concentrating or CARING enough about your game, which is easy to do when you are as talented as these two guys are.

You dont see it from Tony Gwynn because he plays the game the right way, like his dad did.

plus, ask any baseball manager in the game what they think of that and I guarantee theyd be highly upset.

ok Hardy, you make your point very clear and Im going to agree with you for the purpose of your Gwynn-ego arguement. It could very well be possible that Weeks/Fielder are just going through the motions as they prepare the day they play in Miller Park whereas a guy who doesn't have a major league future locked up (Gwynn) can't scoff at a bad play because that could be his starting position on the line.

I know when we drafted Weeks it was said that he was a very hard worker off the field. I vividly remember reading an article saying that he worked out the very night his team finished their last playoff game telling teamates/coaches/family that it was the offseason and time for him to start working for next year. I can't really see the kid as being cocky (not your words) but I dont watch him on a consistant basis either.

Prince and Weeks more than likely will get away with a lot more than two guys with lower ceilings and while thats not fair, its the way it goes.

We'll see how this handles itself...maybe the manager gives the boys a good chewing next practice and both players come back to have huge performances.

It was a good observation and another reason for me to like Gwynn.

Final: Scranton / Wilkes-Barre (Phillies) 10, Indianapolis 6

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Former Indian Lou Collier had four hits Wednesday afternoon leading the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons to a 10-6 win over the Indianapolis Indians. Collier homered, doubled and added a pair of singles to lead the Red Barons? hitting attach which ripped Tribe pitching for 16 hits.

Josh Hancock (6-3) pitched eight innings to pick up the win. Indianapolis starter Pedro Liriano (2-4) was tagged with the loss as the Tribe bullpen failed to keep the Red Barons bats quiet with the exception of the sixth inning.

Indianapolis loses its third consecutive game at home to the Red Barons and now stands 30-27 on the year. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre improves to 36-22.

QUOTES:

Marc Bombard, Red Barons manager on the win:

"Hancock really gave us a shot in the arm," said Bombard. "We had some tough conditions today. It was extremely humid and our bullpen was thin. Lou (Collier) had a big game for us today. Defensively, A.J. Hinch made a nice play early in the game to keep things going. Collier made a great catch in left field as well.

Notes:

Chris Magruder and Matt Erickson each had two doubles.

Mark Johnson added a solo home run.

The Tribe has lost three consecutive games for the first time this season.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Birmingham banged out 12 hits and defeated Huntsville, 8-3, on Wednesday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (30-30) dropped into a tie with the Barons (30-30) for third place in the Southern League West, 2 1/2 games out of first pending action later Wednesday when Mobile plays two at Greenville and West Tenn hosts Montgomery.

The Barons scored three in the first with the help of an error charged to pitcher Mike Jones. Michael Spidale singled and Edwin Yan dropped down a sacrifice bunt, but the ball popped out of Jones' hand before he could throw to first. Michael Morse walked to load the bases, and Aaron McNeal singled home two runs. With runners at first and third, Scott Bikowski grounded into a double play, plating Morse for a 3-0 Barons lead.

Brad Nelson's run-scoring single drew Huntsville within 3-1 in the bottom of the first, but the Stars could draw no closer. In the third, Bikowski singled in a run, then with runners at first and third, Carlos Maldonado hit a double-play ball to short. Johnny Raburn fed Rickie Weeks at second, but the ball slipped out of Weeks' hand as pulled it from his glove, allowing another run to score for a 5-1 Birmingham lead.

Normand Martel accounted for two Barons runs with sacrifice flies in the sixth and ninth, and Nate Murphy ripped a solo homer to left in the eighth. Chris Barnwell launched a two-run shot for Huntsville in the eighth, his third homer of the season.

Jim Bullard (4-3) notched his fourth win and second against Huntsville, allowing two runs and scattering seven hits and two walks with one strikeout in 6 2/3 innings. Mike Jones (0-3), limited to 35 pitches in his first start after 6 1/2 weeks of rehab, suffered the loss, surrendering three runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks while fanning two over 1 2/3 innings.

Huntsville sends righty Chris Saenz (4-3, 3.70) against an unannounced Barons starter in game three of the series Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

"I know when we drafted Weeks it was said that he was a very hard worker off the field'

You have to remember that was pre 4 million dollars, or whatever they paid him. As his website shows, he cares a lot more about money than baseball at this point. Hopefully he can change that.

How can you say Weeks cares more about money than about baseball now? What possible basis do you have for that statement? Because he's in a huge slump, got a big bonus, has a commercial Web site, and laughed at a communication breakdown on a foul ball, he cares more about money than about baseball? I don't even know where to begin shredding that reasoning, or whatever it is.

Pedro Liriano is getting the snot beat out of him. He seems like a guy who may need extended time at AAA to get on top of his game.

Greg.
