I am wondering why in the world those players don't simply move to the US full-time. "Home" is a crime ridden dump...time to move on.

 

I assume that the players are on work visas when they come to the United States. I wonder how hard it would be for them to actually move to the US. I don't know the laws on immigration, but I assume since there are so many illegal immigrants in the country that getting full time residence in the US is difficult.

Well, Down Under, it's summertime -- and Australia's National Baseball Championships are taking place, with six teams banging heads in a round robin-style field that includes just about every state-side professional Aussie of consequence, including IF Trent Durrington and RHP Simon Beresford of the Brewers.

 

As Kevin Goldstein of Baseball America noted, "You know, the best thing about box scores from Austrailia is that I already have the results from tonight's games."

 

Huge kudos to just-turned 22-year-old Beresford in Game One of the tourney!

I'm still trying to figure out why Durrington got more PT than Matt Erikson last year at both Milwaukee and Indy? What can Trent do that Matt can't, besides speak in that Aussie accent that makes the ladies swoon? I suppose that Trent can play the OF and serve as the emergency catcher, but who cares?

 

I guess I'm on the Matt Erikson bandwagon now.

If Simon Beresford continues to work hard to refine those mechanics so he gets the command needed to become more effective, then I can definitely foresee some Power 50 love for the big Aussie in 2005 -- huge performance here in the semi-final tournament game:

Interesting...0 walks, but only 2 strikeouts in 9 innings. Is he an extreme groundball pitcher? Now I am curious, I will have to take a look at his stats from last year. I have never really looked at him as a legitimate prospect...maybe I will have to follow him a bit more closely this year.

Simon had a very erratic year. He didn't do so poorly you would give up on him, but not so well that a few Aussie outings automatically throw him in the Power 50. He gave up too many dingers(nine) and walks(50) over 92 innings for just low A. Slightly in his defense, he never had a defined role with the Snappers. He is a kid you can't help but root for. He is an extremely likeable guy. Between the accent, demeanor and looks, he has my 13 year old daughter's eyes and heart.
