Covering the bases

The Huntsville Stars visit new territory this week. They open a three-game series Monday in Pearl, Miss., outside Jackson, against the Mississippi Braves. The franchise relocated there from Greenville, S.C., when city and county officials there balked at construction of a new stadium or renovation to the current park. Don Mincher, Southern League president and former Stars general manager, was in Pearl on Monday for the inaugural game at Trustmark Park. "It was great," he said. "It's along the lines of Montgomery and Jacksonville, all those stadiums that have a lot of room on the concourses and aisles. There are a lot of seats and a berm area. It's just beautiful." ...

Pretty as the park might be, typical of moving into any place new, there were some last-minute hassles. Laughed Mincher, "They were still putting up fencing. They were shoving stuff back into corners, under beds, hiding things to get through the night." ... Mincher was one of 18 VIPs who threw out a ceremonial first-pitch. As he did earlier at Joe Davis Stadium, the former big-leaguer threw a strike. "There's only one thing you need to guard against: Don't one-hop it there." ...

Mississippi drew 18,097 for its first two dates, which is more than Huntsville and Tennessee drew in seven dates. ...

The Stars' six-game win streak came to an ugly end. Their pitchers yielded 12 hits, seven walks and walked in three runs and wild-pitched in another in a loss at West Tenn Friday.

Line of the week

Huntsville second baseman Callix Crabbe made five plate appearances in Thursday's victory over Mobile at Joe Davis Stadium but was only 1-for-1 at bat. That single didn't play a part in either of his RBIs.

Crabbe had three walks in the game - one with the bases loaded - and the game-winning sacrifice fly, which came on a full count.

"I was just taking what they were giving me," Crabbe said. "My job is to try to get on base first and score runs for this team."

The walks didn't surprise Stars manager Don Money.

"He's usually got a pretty good eye," Money said. Although, "when he gets in a funk, he'll swing at breaking balls in the dirt."

Around the league

The first two weeks of the season have been, to use Mincher's description, "unusual'' in the number of streaking teams.

Montgomery opened with seven consecutive wins. Birmingham won seven in a row. Carolina opened with five straight wins, and had five in a row going into Saturday's play. The Stars won six in a row on their homestand. ...

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Mobile had a franchise-worst 10-game losing streak it finally ended Friday. Chattanooga lost seven in a row, Tennessee began the season 0-7 and Mississippi got off to an 0-5 start. ...

Jacksonville second baseman Jesus Soto became the youngest player to start a game in the Southern League this season, at 18 years, seven months, 13 days. ... The Suns drew 11,318, second-highest in stadium history, Friday night. ... Ex-Star Noochie Varner had a three-run homer for Tennessee on Thursday. ... No wonder Montgomery is 10-5. The Biscuits are batting .328 as a team. ... The hitters are clearly ahead of the pitchers at this stage of the season. Through Friday, the league's composite batting average was .277. ... Adam Bass, the former University of Alabama-Huntsville pitcher, has had two quality starts out of three for Tennessee. But he is 0-2 after yielding two runs on six hits in six innings for the punchless (4-11) Smokies. ... Corwin Malone, once among the White Sox's top prospects, is back with Birmingham after missing '04 with Tommy John surgery.

On deck

The Stars finish their series at West Tenn Sunday, then travel to Pearl, Miss., Monday. The Stars are back home Thursday, hosting the Tennessee Smokies (and ex-UAH pitcher Bass) in a four-game series.

How about Weeks with 10 XBH in 65 AB's. That is extremely encouraging. The way he runs I will stand by my prediction that someday he will lead the lead in triples. I also think he will get close to the record for XBH's by a rookie in 2006.

Crazy start to the game for Li'l Ben according to the live gamecast. Leadoff hitter (former Big leaguer Calvin Murray) with a grounder to 3b, but reaches on the error. Then a WP to second, and PB to third. Third and no outs, but the runner left early on a flyout to left and was called out at 3b. Then groundout to the pitcher to end the frame. Wow, talk about a wasted opportunity

edit: for a second I thought the Sounds were going to do the same thing. Krynzel double to left, Weeks out, Fielder and Hart walk, Nelson hits into FC (Krynzel out at home). So two outs, bases still loaded, and Orie w/2 run single.

Nice to see the Sounds jump on the Cubs 2-0 in the first

How does Callix not get the attention he deserves?

Cause it's only April, and Callix isn't one of our big prospects. He has a chance to be very good, but I want to see a few more weeks from him before I get excited

other than the quirky plays in the top of the 1st it seems as though lil' ben is on the attack today and is mixing up his pitchers early (as i write this he gives up a 1B). i'm really pulling for him to re-earn a call-up as i'm very desirous to see some of these pitching prospects pan out.

edit: we scored the runs on a two out single by orie. fielder and hart scored (both reached base via BB).

I know it's only April, but the guy has been putting up great numbers for the past few years now, except for his .260 BA in Beloit (although he still had 60 somthing walks to 50 strikeouts).

22-year-old Callix Crabbe would be the top second base prospect in most organizations -- he'll see big league time, but it won't be with Milwaukee unless Mr. Weeks is moved to another position. The fact Crabbe is tied to that one position isn't a plus, however, in terms of any future utility role.

with the exception of calvin murray, it doesn't sound as though any of the iowa cubs have put a good swing on a ball yet today.

Yeah, reaching on an error and a HBP really is crushing the ball (just saying that tongue in cheek)

One big difference between Callix and Mr Weeks - Callix actually can play second base. He has single handedly made my ballpark visits a thing of joy again. After watching the position butchered for a year, it is really sweet to watch Callix play it. (Yes I know Weeks has a tremendous upside that Callix probably doesn't, but that didn't make it any more fun to watch him murder 2B)
