Is it just me or has Prince heated up around this time of year in the past? I remember people whining about him in draft chats both years, and then he would start heating up right after that. Maybe I'm just imagining this, but good luck to Prince. Prince is putting up those kinds of stats in the minors that the big time major league power hitters put up in their minor league stints, so this is getting me pretty excited.

Nail biter in Portland

3-2 Beavers top of 9.

Bennet gave up a dong in the bottom of the 8th. Rivera just misses 2 homers, second goes for a double driving in Hart in top 9.

1st and 3rd, no outs....

Edit: Nelson pinch hit 3 run bomb! Sounds lead 5-3.

Enrique Cruz just hit one off the scoreboard, now 2-2 w/ 1B, HR in the game.

That's his 3rd in the series. The announcer mentioned that he hit two out to the same spot in BP. Good to see the power and average from Enrique.

(Hard to ignore that 14th error of the season..)

Final: Nashville 5, Portland (Padres) 3

Much needed victory!

Nashville Site Game Summary:

PORTLAND ? Pinch-hitter Brad Nelson ended Nashville?s five-game losing streak in dramatic fashion, belting a one-out, three-run homer off PCL saves leader Brad Baker in the top of the ninth inning on Wednesday afternoon at PGE Park to erase a 3-2 deficit and propel the Sounds to a 5-3 victory in the third game of a four-game series.

The longball, Nelson?s fourth of the season, capped a four-run Nashville ninth and was the first pinch-hit blast by a Sounds player this season.

The victory was the Sounds? tenth last at-bat win of the year as well as the club?s seventh come-from-behind victory in a game in which Nashville trailed in the seventh inning or beyond.

After Corey Hart opened the ninth with a single, recently-added Sounds catcher Mike Rivera recorded his first Nashville RBI in dramatic fashion, drilling a run-scoring double off the wall in left to make it a 3-2 game. Ryan Knox followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners with none out. After Steve Scarborough struck out, Nelson delivered his game-winning shot while batting for pitcher Jeff Bennett.

Nashville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Kevin Orie?s RBI single, which scored Trent Durrington. The Aussie infielder had singled and moved to second when Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch.

Durrington continued his recent hot hitting by pacing the Nashville offense with a 2-for-4 effort. In addition, he stole his team-leading 14th base of the year.

Portland tied it in the fifth during an inning that included four singles against Sounds right-hander Ben Hendrickson, none of which left the infield. Former Sound Adam Hyzdu tied the contest when he came home on J.J. Furmaniak?s two-out RBI single to third.

Beavers first baseman Jon Knott propelled the home team to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff home run to left off Hendrickson, his team-leading eighth roundtripper of the year.

Ben Johnson tacked on an insurance run for Portland in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out solo homer off Bennett. It was the outfielder?s fifth blast of the season.

Fielder saw his seven-game hitting streak snapped following an 0-for-3 afternoon for the Sounds.

Bennett (1-0) earned his first win of the year after allowing one run in his two frames of work. Baker (1-3) took the loss after permitting the four-run outburst in the ninth. Chad Paronto tossed a perfect bottom of the ninth, including two strikeouts, to notch his third save of the year for Nashville.

Both starting pitchers performed well but took no-decisions following the late Nashville comeback. Portland?s Clay Hensley missed a chance at his first victory as a result of Baker?s blown save. His solid outing included one run allowed on five hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Hendrickson took a no-decision for Nashville following a strong performance, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings.

The Sounds will shoot for a series split when the teams wrap up the four-game set at 9:05 p.m. on Thursday evening. Left-hander Jeff Housman (2-3, 4.17) takes the hill for Nashville to face Portland right-hander Mike Bumstead (0-1, 3.95).

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Jeremy Hermida singled home the tying and winning runs in the seventh inning and Jerrod Fuell worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth to preserve Carolina?s 4-3 win over Huntsville Wednesday night in the third game of a four-game set at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats have won the last two nights to improve to 29-16 overall and 6-1 at home against the Stars, who dropped to 20-26 overall and 5-10 in one run games. The Stars have lost 11 out of 13 road games to divisional opponents and are 9-17 overall away from home.

Ben Van Iderstine led off the ninth inning for Huntsville against Jerrod Fuell, who took over for winner Kevin Cave to start the inning, and reached second base when shortstop Robert Andino could not cleanly field his ground ball. Travis Ezi came on to pinch-run and moved to third base when Kennard Bibbs dropped down the Stars second sacrifice bunt of the night. Pinch-hitter Brandon Gemoll and Callix Crabbe walked to load the bases before Tony Gwynn, Jr. struck out swinging and Vinny Rottino grounded out to end the game. Fuell earned his third save in his league-high 22nd appearance and Cave celebrated his 25th birthday by retiring all six hitters he faced.

The Stars led 3-2 in the seventh before Carolina tallied to take the lead for good. Rex Rundgren led off with a walk and was forced at second on a ground ball off the bat of Frank Moore, who had entered the game in the top of the inning as part of a double-switch. James Shanks singled and moved Moore to second before Andino struck out for the second out of the inning. Stars? starter Dana Eveland uncorked a wild pitch that advanced the runners before Hermida sent a ground ball past a diving Crabbe into right field for a base hit that scored both runners to make it 4-3 Mudcats. Eveland was taken out and replaced by David Bradley, who struck Jason Hill to end the inning.

Michael Tucker led off the home second with a double and scored one out later on a two-base hit by Chris Bass, who knocked in his third run of the series. Enrique Cruz booted a ground ball off the bat of Andino with two outs and the bases loaded that allowed Bass to score to put Carolina on top, 2-1. Rex Rundgren, who had singled, rounded third base and slipped and was thrown out by Cruz on the same play for the final out of the frame.

Cruz?s one-out home run in the fourth, off the scoreboard in left-center field, tied the game at two. It was his fifth of the season and third of the series and third allowed by Mudcats starter Luke Lockwood, who was making his third start since joining the rotation after Logan Kensing was called up to join the Florida Marlins. The Stars moved ahead 3-2 in the fifth when Eveland doubled for his first hit of the season, moved to third on a Crabbe sacrifice and scored on a base hit by Gwynn, who picked up his first hit of the series. Eveland, who joined Manny Parra as the only Stars pitchers to score a run this season, allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits and a pair of walks. The southpaw struck out six and suffered the loss to fall to 3-4.

The series concludes Thursday night with right-hander Dennis Sarfate getting the starting assignment against Mudcats? Yorman Bazardo. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:00 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Kennard Bibbs dropped down the Stars second sacrifice bunt of the night.

I know the small ball purists amongst you will heartily approve, but I am sick of watching this Star's team gift outs to the opposition. Ezi on second is quite capable of scoring on any sort of hit and Bibbs is playing well enough at the minute to get a hit. Also if Bibbs gets on base he has plenty of speed to give the Mudcats even more trouble.

I am so tired of watching successive Stars managers micro manage the base paths badly!

I used to love small ball, but Kremblas and Money have driven me into the Earl Weaver fan club!

Extra-Inning Rally Extends Win Streak

By DAVID YATES

Lakeland Ledger Correspondent

LAKELAND -- In their most improbable win of an improbable season, the Lakeland Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning and stunned Brevard County, 10-9, in Florida State League baseball on Wednesday night.

Those in a Marchant Stadium crowd of 978 who left before the end of the game missed a series of dramatic hits by Scott Tousa, Garth McKinney, Juan Francia and Brent Clevlen, whose two-run single provided the tying and winning runs.

"With the count 0-2, I was willing to give myself up any way I could to get that tying run home, but managed to get just enough wood on his curve to get the ball over the infield," said Clevlen, who got the game-winning hit off of Brevard reliever Brett Evert (0-2).

Of the 213 professional baseball teams in North America, only Double-A West Tennessee (33-13) and the Chicago White Sox (33-14) have better records than Lakeland (32-14).

The Tigers continue to hold a 3 1/2-game lead over Dunedin (2918) in the West division of the FSL. The Blue Jays staged their own miracle rally and slipped past Daytona, 11-10, Wednesday.

The Manatees tallied five runs in the fifth inning on five hits, three Lakeland errors, and two wild pitches, one of which allowed Robby Deevers, a .189 batter, to reach first after striking out.

Brevard County right-hander Tim Dillard, who has pitched much better this season than his 1-5 record indicates, limited Lakeland to six hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings. But the Tigers scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to tie.

Tousa, Francia, and hot-hitting Kelly Hunt all singled in the inning, which included an untimely Manatee error.

Lakeland forged ahead, 6-5 when Tousa and Danilo Sanchez belted back-to-back doubles in the eighth, but Drew Anderson homered off Tiger closer Chris Homer to tie the game in the ninth.

Brevard then scored three more runs off Homer in the 10th but that just set the stage for Lakeland's dramatic comeback.

The Tigers and Manatees will conclude their four-game series tonight, when Preston Larrison (0-0, 7.36 ) is expected to oppose Brevard southpaw Ryan Anderson (0-0, 0.00).

Larrison will be making his second start after coming off the disabled list last week. The highly-touted but injury-plagued 6-foot-11-inch Anderson will be making his first start in more than four years.

Huntsvillefan,

I know exactly how you feel. I was so glad to see Money leave Beloit. Too many times he blew perfect chances and opted for the sacrifice. His obsession with the bunt and stealing was killing me. One moment that I love was during one game the Snappers got a guy on first...can't remember whom....I yell out "No! Don't steal!" Money whips around and looks directly at me. Sure enough the runner goes on 1st pitch and is nailed by a few feet. I don't mind the steal, but when you start to get a pattern that casual fans like me can figure out. It gets bad. And to bunt away outs all the time is nuts.

“I'm a beast, I am, and a Badger what's more. We don't change. We hold on."  C.S. Lewis
