In progress, Game One (still!): Lake County (Indians) 4, West Virginia 4, after 12 innings (was scheduled for only seven)

The Power scored an unearned run to tie it in the bottom of the 7th, and pitching has dominated since then. Derek DeCarlo pitched very well after surrendering the 7th-inning lead, as described in the earlier post. Ben Stanczyk pitched himself out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 12th.

I hadn't listened to the opponents' audio of a Power game in full this season. Given this is a doubleheader, I'm getting my money's worth. The Lake County announcer, going solo, is excellent -- in voice, context, and knowledge. Nice job -- and the feed is coming in wonderfully clear, as opposed to say, Huntsville's feed, which has been a bit tinny all season.

Depending on how long this one goes, we might see a position player throw at some point tonight. Robbie Wooley will need to be economical with his pitches in Game Two.

Costello with another pretty decent outing. He's been really good lately. Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere else, but is the only reason he's not in Huntsville because Parra and Eveland are lefties like him? Whatever the reason, keep it up Ryan! Good to see one of these teams hold onto a lead. I'm probably wrong, but it just seems like no lead is safe this year for our minor league teams.

Just a note from the Huntsville game. The starting pitcher from Carolina is a former Boscobel, WI graduate and UW Minn graduate...Craig Molldrem. He was drafted in the 8th round last year and was making his first start in AA. He actually had surgery on his forearm right after being drafted so they are moving him very quickly. Looks like he pitched pretty well for the first 4 innings.

Final, Game Two: West Virginia 7, Lake County (Indians) 3, scheduled for seven innings

West Virginia Site Doubleheader Summary:

POWER SPLIT 22 INNING DOUBLE DIP

WITH THE CAPTAINS

The West Virginia Power and Lake County Captains were scheduled to play a pair of seven inning ball games on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. The first game took 15 innings to complete with the Captains coming out on top 7-4 but the Power evened the score with a 7-3 victory in game two.

Brian Barton started the scoring in game one with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to give the Captains a 2-0 lead. Freddy Parejo tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning with a two-run triple, and Alcides Escobar knocked him in during the next at bat on an RBI single to give the Power a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Captains had the bases loaded with one out. Brian Finegan hit a groundball, which appeared to be a game ending double play ball, but Finegan dove head first into first base to prevent the double play and allowed Wyatt Torregas to score the tying run. Juan Valdes drove in the go ahead run during the next at bat to put the Captains up 4-3. The Power were down to their final out in the bottom of the seventh inning when Parejo hit a two-out single. Parejo stole second base, then made it to third when second baseman Marshall Szabo misplayed the throw from his catcher Wyatt Toregas, the ball went into centerfield and it was bobbled by Juan Valdes, allowing Parejo to score and tie the game at 4-4. There was no scoring thereafter until the 15th inning. Chris Gimenez smacked a two-run double in the top of the 15th inning and Marshall Szabo knocked him in on an RBI single to make it a 7-4 game.

In game two Hernan Iribarren drove in the first run on an RBI groundout in the first inning to give the Power a 1-0 lead. The Power took a 5-0 lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. Escobar drove in the first run on an single and Iribarren followed him with an RBI double. Grant Richardson drove in Escobar with a groundout and Carlos Corporan knocked in the final run of the inning with a single.

The Captains received their first two runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double from Brian Finegan and an RBI single from Juan Valdes to make it a 5-2 ball game. The Power added two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double from Hasan Rasheed to take a 7-2 advantage. The Captains scored the final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Brian Finegan crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

In game one Brandon Rickert (1-0) earned the victory and Simon Beresford (1-1) obtained the loss. In game two Robbie Wooley (1-2) earned the victory and Adrian Shau (2-3) obtained the loss. After the split the Power move to 15-32 and the Captains move to 27-20.

The Power will continue the series against Lake County on Friday night at Appalachian Power Park. RHP Josh Wahpepah (2-3, 4.35) will throw for the Power and the Captains will counter with right-handed pitcher Justin Hoyman (2-0, 3.00). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Final: Huntsville 6, Carolina (Marlins) 4

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Link for Brandon Gemoll photo, text follows --

www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=612

Brandon Gemoll belted his first home run of the season and knocked in four runs to power Huntsville past Carolina 6-4 Thursday night in the final game of a four-game set at Five County Stadium. The Stars gained a split of the series and improved to 21-26 overall and 10-17 on the road, while Carolina fell to 29-17. The Stars won for just a third time in 14 road games against divisional foes and finished with two wins in eight games in Zebulon, NC.

Huntsville starter Dennis Sarfate walked Jeremy Hermida to open the home fourth and James Shanks followed with a double to move Hermida to third, the second of his four hits on the night. Sarfate then reared back and struck out Michael Tucker, Frank Moore and Rex Rundgren in succession to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

The Stars stranded six runners in the first three innings before finally scoring in the fifth against Craig Molldrem, called up from low class-A ball to make an emergency start after the promotion of scheduled starter Yorman Bazardo to the Florida Marlins. The Stars loaded the bases with nobody out on singles by Kennard Bibbs and Vinny Rottino and a walk to Tony Gwynn, Jr. before Ben Van Iderstine?s fielder?s choice grounder forced Rottino at second and plated Bibbs with the game?s first run. Gemoll then launched his long ball to right field with two outs to push the lead to 4-0 and knock Molldrem out of the game.

Sarfate carried that 4-0 edge into the sixth before allowing three runs and being taken out of the game. Jason Hill reached to open the inning on a throwing error by Enrique Cruz on a routine ground ball to shortstop. Hermida walked and Shanks followed with a triple to score both runners to cut the lead to 4-2. Hermida was the first batter walked by Sarfate to score since the Mudcats? Chris Bass back on April 8. Michael Tucker delivered Shanks with a sacrifice fly to trim the lead to one before Frank Moore reached second base on a bunt base hit and throwing error by Gemoll. The Stars brought Mitch Stetter into the game and he struck out pinch-hitter J.C. Muniz and Bass to end the inning.

Tony Zuniga?s two-out, pinch-hit single scored Cruz in the eighth and a base hit by Gemoll plated pinch-runner Travis Ezi in the ninth to give the Stars a 6-3 lead. Zuniga knocked in his first run since May 14 at Montgomery with his second pinch-hit of the season.

Matt DeWitt threw scoreless relief in the eighth and yielded a run in the ninth before fanning Hermida to end the game and nail down his fifth save of the season and second of the series. Sarfate became the first Stars pitcher to earn his fourth win by striking out eight, walking a season-high four and allowing only four hits.

The Stars return home Friday to open a four-game series with Tennessee. Manny Parra, the Southern League Pitcher of the Week, will start for the Stars against the Smokies Matt Chico. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Going, going, gone for Gemoll

Not soon enough for the Mudcats, pitcher Logan Kensing will rejoin Carolina when the Mudcats go on the road tomorrow in Chattanooga for another one of 39 games they'll play against each other this season........ Not soon enough, for Craig Mulldrem, who will head back to Greensboro, pitched in and out of trouble for four innings, until Brandon Gemoll ended a scoreless battle with a three-run home run, his first of the season, after nearly slicing a ball out of the park on Mulldrem's first pitch...... With a 1-1 pitch, Gemoll sent a ball deep the opposite way to cap a four-run 5th for the Stars, effecting a split on the road with the Mudcats........ Mulldrem was 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA for the low-A Sally League Grasshoppers.

After leaving six runners on base in the first three innings, including the bases full in the 3rd, Gemoll stepped up to the plate with two out......... Kennard Bibbs led off with a single up the middle, then stole his 10th base of the season..... Tony Gwynn, Jr. walked and Vinny Rottino singled to right to load the bases..... Ben Van Iderstine, who stranded those runners in the 3rd, hit into a force, scoring Bibbs to give the Stars a 1-0 lead...... Jeff Winchester flied out to right sending up Gemoll, who had knocked in just one run in his last 42 at-bats, and had not homered for the Stars since May 10 a year ago vs. Mobile. It was Gemoll's first home run vs. Carolina in his third year with the Stars.

Wednesday night, the Stars were hurt by a wild pitch, when Dana Eveland uncorked one to send runners into scoring position, and set up Jeremy Hermida's game-winning single that beat the Stars in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory for Carolina........ Tonight, the worm turned for Carolina as an 8th inning wild pitch by Ross Wolf put Enrique Cruz into scoring position. Tony Zuniga then drove Cruz in on a single to left, giving the Stars a 5-3 lead......... The insurance run for the Stars came in the 9th after Van Iderstine hit a lead-off double to left, his 2nd of the night. Travis Ezi, who ran for Van Iderstine, scored after a sacrifice, on a single by Gemoll....... Gemoll, with his biggest game of the season, and his second three-hit game of the season, raised his average 16 points to .223.

Dennis Sarfate became the Stars' first four-game winner...... Sarfate was 9th among Southern League ERA leaders going into this game....... Friday, the Stars return home to face the Tennessee Smokies. Matt Chico (1-7) will be matched opposite Manny Parra, who is 1-2, 2.74 in May. A good crowd is expected with the appearance of Rusty Walrus, Ken Giraffey, Jr., and Shaquille O'Seal ------- yes, I'm talking about The Zooperstars, my personal favorite as far as promotional attractions ago....... Come with your best voice when Harry Canary sings "Take Me Out to the Ballgame".

Gwynn stole his 54th base as a Huntsville Star, placing him one in back of Jim Buccheri and Joel Wolfe for 9th place among the Stars all-time stolen base leaders....... Sarfate walked a season-high four hitters, but still has an impressive strikeout-walk ratio of 50:12....... Rottino, who struck out only three times in his last 55 at-bats coming into this game, struck out twice tonight...... The Stars have now made an error in each of their last nine games, approaching the record of 11 by a Milwaukee-affiliated Stars team in 2001....... The all-time record is 19 consecutive games set by the 1991 Stars.

Final: Portland (Padres) 8, Nashville 4

Nashville Site Game Summary:

PORTLAND ? The Nashville Sounds wrapped up their eight-game road trip to the Pacific Northwest on the short end of an 8-4 decision against the Portland Beavers on Thursday evening at PGE Park in the finale of a four-game series.

With the loss, Nashville (23-25) finished its trip with a 2-6 mark and suffered its ninth defeat in the club?s last 12 contests.

The Sounds managed only five hits on the evening, which was a forgettable outing for the heart of the order as the third through sixth hitters finished a combined 0-for-14.

Every Portland starter, including pitcher Mike Bumstead, recorded a hit in the contest, led by right fielder Ben Johnson?s 3-for-4 effort that included a pair of home runs and a ground-rule double and former Sound Adam Hyzdu?s 3-for-4, two-RBI evening.

Nashville second baseman Rickie Weeks returned from a two-day absence with a bang, spotting the Sounds a 2-0 lead with a two-run, first-inning homer off Bumstead. The blast, which scored Dave Krynzel who was hit by a pitch to lead off the ballgame, was Weeks? team-leading eighth of the season.

As was seemingly the case all series, the Beavers responded immediately to a Nashville outburst with one of their own in the bottom of the frame, using a pair of back-to-back longballs by J.J. Furmaniak and Ben Johnson to grab a 3-2 lead against Sounds starter Jeff Housman.

Portland broke the game open in the third, tallying four runs to take a commanding 7-2 advantage. Johnson led off with his second homer of the contest, a solo shot to left that was his seventh four-bagger of the year. Bumstead, the Beavers? starting pitcher, delivered the big blow in the frame when he ripped a two-run, bases-loaded double to left-center for his first knock of the season.

Housman (2-3) lasted only three innings for Nashville, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits, including three homers. He matched his season high with six strikeouts but drew a loss for the second consecutive start.

The home run barrage continued in the fourth when Sounds shortstop Steve Scarborough belted a two-out, two-run homer off Bumstead to score Ryan Knox and pull Nashville within 7-4. The tater, which extended Scarborough?s hitting streak to a season-best five games, was the infielder?s seventh of the campaign, placing him second on the club behind Weeks; he hit only four home runs in 112 games for Triple-A Indianapolis in 2004.

Like clockwork, the Beavers answered in the bottom of the frame against Nashville reliever Mike Meyers when Josh Barfield scored from first on Hyzdu?s single to right-center. The RBI was the second of the contest for the ex-Sound, who earlier notched a run-scoring double during the four-run Portland third.

Nashville?s best chance to get back into the game came in the top of the fifth when the Sounds left the bases loaded against Portland reliever Angel Tovar. After the first two batters were retired, Knox doubled, Scarborough was hit by a pitch, and pinch-hitter Corey Hart drew a walk to fill the bags before Krynzel flew out to end the frame.

Bumstead (1-1) earned his first victory of the season after allowing four runs on only three hits (two homers) over five innings of work for the Beavers.

The Sounds travel back to Nashville on Friday to open a four-game Memorial Day weekend homestand against the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA-Nationals). Right-hander Rick Helling (2-2, 4.79) will start the 7 p.m. series opener at Greer Stadium for Nashville and face a yet-to-be-determined Zephyrs hurler.

Just wondering -- can we get an explanation as to why Matt Erickson hasn't been placed on the disabled list? Have we seen him in the last month?

Craig Molldrem. He was drafted in the 8th round last year and was making his first start in AA. He actually had surgery on his forearm right after being drafted so they are moving him very quickly.

Just a quick note- he's not in AA to stay just yet. One of Carolina's pitchers was called up to Florida to make an emergancy start, and Molldrem was brought up from Low A to take his place. He's going back soon (today I think).

Still, not a bad start except for the walks.

Chris
