You really were not joking about going to Nashville for some Waffle House food and a Sounds game. Wow.

Did anyone else see the West Virginia Power has crawled out of last place? Just give the youngsters some time, they will do just fine.

Anyone know who's pitching tomorrow for the Sounds? I'm going to be at the game, and I just want to know who i'm going to see.

Brian, enjoy Mr. Capellan on Sunday. Have a great trip!

Remember, the Nashville media notes always includes the upcoming rotation -- here's Saturday's notes:

www.nashvillesounds.com/pdf/notes.pdf

Also from the Nashville site:

Nashville Sounds right-hander Rick Helling, who had a fragment of a broken bat impale his lower left forearm in the seventh inning of Friday evening's 13-3 win, sat down with Sounds play-by-play announcer Chuck Valenches to discuss the injury prior to this evening's game against the Zephyrs.

Helling will make his next start on Wednesday. Here's the audio link:

I'm glad Brian is getting a good game to watch in Nashville as there is a bit of disappointment for him in Huntsville tonight. Khalid pitched in relief, which I presume means that he goes to the pen to make way for Ryan Costello.

I feel really sorry for him (Khalid), you can't argue that Ryan deserves to be starting at AA, but it would have been nice to see the space made for him by Sarfate's promotion to Nashville rather than this. I really have felt that Khalid has pitched better than his numbers show, but thats obviously not the view held in Milwaukee.

Final: Nashville 13, New Orleans (Nationals) 8

Nashville Site Game Summary:

NASHVILLE ? Prince Fielder belted a grand slam and matched his career high with six RBIs in leading the Nashville Sounds to a 13-8 victory over the visiting New Orleans Zephyrs on Saturday evening in front of 8,137 fans at Greer Stadium.

With the victory, the Sounds (25-25) pulled back to .500 on the season and within two games of first-place Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

Nashville exploded for a double-digit outburst against the Z?s for the second consecutive night; the Sounds scored 13 in the series opener on Friday. Every Nashville position player recorded a hit except Ryan Knox.

Former Sound J.J. Davis spotted the visitors a 1-0 lead with an RBI double off Sounds starter Justin Lehr in the top of the first inning. New Orleans doubled the advantage in the third on Matt Cepicky?s two-out RBI double down the left field line.

Fielder tied the game at 2-2 with an opposite-field, two-run double off the base of the wall in left in the bottom of the third. Lehr, who had walked, and Rickie Weeks, who doubled, scored on the two-bagger.

The Zephyrs retook the lead with a two-run fourth against Lehr despite not having a hit leave the infield, using a pair of Nashville errors to register the tallies.

Nashville exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Fielder?s grand slam off Yarnall, to jump ahead, 8-4, before tacking on four more in the fifth to make it a 12-4 contest. Dave Krynzel and Kevin Orie both homered during the Nashville fifth, belting their fifth and eighth roundtrippers of the season respectively.

New Orleans got four runs back in the top of the sixth with a pair of two-run homers off Sounds reliever Andy Pratt. Davis continued his solid evening when he belted his second homer in as many nights against his former club, smacking the first two-run shot for his third roundtripper of the season. Rick Short followed with his own two-run shot off Pratt two batters later, his fifth homer of the year.

Weeks ripped his second double of the night to plate Chris Barnwell with the evening?s final run, extending the Nashville lead to 13-8 in the bottom of the eighth. The Brewers? top prospect has mashed 19 of his last 25 hits for extra bases.

Pratt (2-4) picked up the victory after allowing four runs in two innings of relief work behind Lehr. Yarnall (3-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering eight runs in only three frames of work.

The teams continue the series with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Jose Capellan (3-2, 4.87) will make the start for the Sounds and face New Orleans right-hander Chad Durbin (0-2, 8.17).

The Tennessean -- MIKE ORGAN

Game at a glance

? Winning pitcher: Andy Pratt (2-4).

? Big stick: Prince Fielder, 2-for-4, grand slam, six RBIs.

? How they won: Prince Fielder hit the Sounds' first grand slam of the season in the fourth inning to break a 4-4 tie. Dave Krynzel hit a homer and Kevin Orie had a three-run blast in the fifth for a 12?4 cushion. The Zephyrs got a couple of two-run homers to trim the gap to 12?8 in the sixth.

? What they said: "With less than two outs I was just trying to get the guy from third in. I either wanted to get a fly ball or hit the ball hard out of the infield. It (the grand slam) gave us a little lead and things started going more our way,'' ? Sounds first baseman Prince Fielder.

? Today's pitchers: Sounds RHP Jose Capellan (3-2, 4.87) vs. Zephyrs RHP Chad Durbin (0-2, 8.17 ERA).

Injury won't sideline Helling

Bat in arm requires just seven stitches

By MIKE ORGAN

Tennessean Staff Writer

The day after suffering one of the most bizarre injuries in baseball, Sounds pitcher Rick Helling was at Greer Stadium last night for Nashville's game against New Orleans.

He spent much of the day answering calls from family and friends who heard about the injury. In the seventh inning of Friday night's game, Helling threw a pitch that jammed New Orleans' Craig Kuzmic. A piece of Kuzmic's shattered bat about 10 inches long flew out to the pitcher's mound and stabbed Helling in his left (non-pitching) arm.

"I've never seen anything like that happen to anybody else,'' Helling said. "I've never even heard of anything like that.''

Last year a line drive came back and hit Helling, 34, and broke his leg.

"It's a hazard to be a pitcher, sometimes you're in harm's way, but still, I've never heard of anything like what happened (Friday) night,'' Helling said. "People get hit sometimes by the bat. Sometimes broken bats go into the stands and fans get hit, but I've never heard of anybody actually getting stuck with a bat.''

After the incident Helling was taken to Vanderbilt Hospital and needed seven stitches to close the wound made by the piece of wood that went 3½ inches into his upper forearm.

No X-rays were performed because, according to doctors, wood would not show up. The wound was cleansed but Helling was told there still could be some small splinters inside.

Helling, who was injured on his 87th pitch, was credited with the 13-3 win.

The victory improved his record to 3-2.

Helling said his arm was sore, but he hopes to be able to pitch when he comes up again in the rotation Wednesday at Albuquerque.

"We'll see what happens these next three days,'' Helling said.

"As long as I can use my left arm to catch the ball, I'll try to make due.''

Sounds catcher Julio Mosquera said he nearly fainted when he saw the sheared piece of the bat fly into Helling's arm.

Helling said he saw the bat coming and tried to get out of the way, but was unable to.

"I saw a big part of the bat coming, like the barrel or something, I don't know if there was more than one piece or not,'' Helling said. "I tried to jump out of the way of it, but obviously I didn't miss all of it. Then I remember looking down and seeing the bat sticking out of my arm and knowing that wasn't normal.''

The puncture, Helling said, wasn't nearly as painful as when medical personnel removed the piece from his arm.

"When they took it out, that was really painful,'' Helling said.

Final: Tennessean (Diamondbacks) 4, Huntsville 3, 11 innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Jerry Gil?s leadoff home run in the 11th inning lifted Tennessee to a 4-3 win over Huntsville Saturday night in the second game of a four game series. The Smokies have taken the first two games of the series to improve to 21-28 and move into a three-way tie with the Stars and Chattanooga for third place in the North Division. The Stars have lost seven straight home games and 10 out of their last 11 at Joe Davis Stadium after winning a franchise-best 10 in a row between April 16 and May 1.

Mitch Stetter entered the game in the 11th on the hill for Huntsville and Gil blasted a 1-1 curve ball over the wall in left field for his first home run in five games with the Smokies on his rehabilitation assignment from the Diamondbacks. It was the second home run allowed by the Stars southpaw and the first since April 13 at Jacksonville when Joel Guzman homered off of him in the ninth inning.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. led off the home 11th with a walk and was forced at second base for the first out of the inning on a Vinny Rottino ground ball that was not fielded cleanly by third baseman Jamie D?Antona, Arizona?s second round selection in 2003. Nelson Cruz followed with a base hit to center field that pushed Rottino to second and chased pitcher Casey Daigle from the game. Left-hander Bill White was brought on to face lefty swinging Brandon Gemoll, who bounced into a force play at third for the second out of the inning. Right-hander Pete Sikaras was then called on to face righty swinging John Vanden Berg, who reached when D?Antona could not cleanly field his ground ball behind the bag at third base. Callix Crabbe came to bat with the sacks full and two down and whistled a one-hopper down the first base line that was gloved by a diving Dan Uggla, who took the ball to the bag to retire Crabbe to end the game. The Stars left the bases loaded in their final at-bat in each of their last three losses.

Tennessee?s bullpen worked four scoreless frames behind starter Enrique Gonzalez and has blanked the Stars over nine innings in two games. Daigle earned his second win and Sikaras nailed down his second save. Gonzalez, who had allowed just two runs in 30 2/3 innings in his last four starts, gave up three runs on six hits over seven frames.

The Stars got leadoff triples from Crabbe in the third and Gemoll in the fifth that were converted into runs and a two-out run-scoring single from Nelson Cruz in the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Nelson Cruz finished with two hits in five at-bats after being activated from the disabled list and playing for the first time since suffering a hamstring injury on May 20. Gwynn went hitless in three at-bats and lost a nine-game home hitting streak.

The series continues Sunday with right-hander David Bradley making a spot start for the Stars against Smokies? left-hander Clint Goocher. Coverage of the game gets underway at 5:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Fort Myers (Twins) 11, Brevard County 4

Game Summary from the Miracle's Site:

FORT MYERS, FL ? It took nearly a month, but the Fort Myers Miracle finally gained a game in the division as they beat up on the Brevard County Manatees 11-4 on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium.

For the first time since April 30, when the Miracle defeated the Lakeland Tigers 6-5, the Miracle won on a night the first place Tigers lost and pulled to within five games of the division lead. There were two stars on the night, starting pitcher Scott Tyler and left fielder Trent Oeltjen.

Tyler was spectacular in hurling seven innings allowing one run, a solo homer to C.J. Medlin in the seventh inning, on three hits while walking one and striking out seven. He made 88 pitches, 64 for strikes. He retired 15 straight in the game, from one out in the first until a one out single in the sixth.

Oeltjen provided a lot of the offense, blasting two two-run homers and knocking in five runs. It was his first multi-homer game of his career and the third time a Miracle player has hit two homers in a game this season. Brock Peterson did it twice before.

The Miracle got single runs in the first and second innings before Oeltjen came calling in the sixth. With Ben Pattee on at first, Oeltjen crushed one over the right field wall for his first homer of the season. Two batters later Scott Whitrock hit a solo homer over the right field wall, his seventh of the season.

The Miracle poured it on in the eighth sending 12 men to the plate and scoring six runs. Oeltjen got it started again. With Pattee on first Oeltjen hit a hanging breaking ball over the right field wall for his second of the game. Matt Tolbert had an RBI single, Matt Moses had a bloop RBI double down the left field line and Kyle Geiger had an RBI single. Oeltjen came up with the bases loaded in the same inning and singled to left to drive in his fifth run of the game. He finished the night 3-5 with two homers, five RBI and two runs scored.

Tolbert went 3-4 with a triple, RBI and a run scored, while Moses, Geiger and Whitrock each collected two hits.

The same two teams meet Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. (12:05 Central). The Miracle send RHP Adam Harben (3-4, 3.94) to the hill against the Manatees RHP Carlos Villanueva (5-0, 2.14).

Final: Lake County (Indians) 10, West Virginia 5

Only Nashville's bats save the day for the organization...

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Power haunted by big innings in loss to Lake County

The Lake County Captains scored four runs in the first inning and five runs in the fifth inning on Saturday night to beat the West Virginia Power by the final score of 10-5 at Appalachian Power Park.

Mike Butia knocked in the first run of the game with a single to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. Matt Whitney reached on an infield single during the next at bat to give the Captains their second run of the inning and Josh Noviskey drove in the final two runs of the inning with a double to make it 4-0 Captains.

In the bottom of the first inning Hernan Iribarren reached on an infield single and drove in Hasan Rasheed to make it a 4-1 game. Carlos Corporan hit a two-run single later in the inning to make it a 4-3 ballgame.

Juan Valdes crossed the plate in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly from Brian Finegan to make it a 5-3 Captains lead. The Power came within a run in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Josh Murray hit a solo shot. It was his fourth homer of the year and made it a 5-4 ballgame. The Captains scored five times in the fifth inning and pulled away. Josh Noviskey hit a three-run homer and Argenis Reyes knocked in the final two runs of the inning with a double to make it 10-4 Captains. Iribarren drove in the last run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it was too little and too late for the Power.

Captains pound Power 10-5

By Jim Workman

For Sunday Gazette-Mail

The West Virginia Power retired the first two Lake County batters Saturday night, and Fernando Pacheco?s fly ball to right looked to be an easy third out, but Power right fielder Adam Mannon lost the ball in the evening sun and allowed the ball to hit his glove and bounce out.

Things snowballed from there as the Captains took advantage of that opportunity and plated four unearned runs in the first inning en route to a 10-5 victory over the Power in a South Atlantic League contest at Appalachian Power Park.

?That happens when we need to make a play and don?t get it,? said Power manager Ramon Aviles. ?It was a tough play early in the game, but the sun is the same for both of the teams. We have to make that play. Sometimes when you get in a big hole, it?s hard to come out of it.?

Lake County (28-21) got RBI singles from Mike Butia and Matt Whitney while Josh Noviskey added a two-run double for the Captains in the first.

Undeterred, the Power (16-33) plated three runs of its own in the bottom of the first. Hernan Iribarren?s bunt single scored Hasan Rasheed and Carlos Corporan swatted a two-run single to cut the Lake County advantage to 4-3.

Brian Finegan?s sacrifice fly in the second gave the Captains a 5-3 lead, but West Virginia answered again in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run off the bat of Josh Murray to bring the Power to within one at 5-4.

Another big inning sealed the Power?s fate when a five-run fifth gave Lake County some breathing room. Noviskey plowed a three-run homer over the right-field fence and Argenis Reyes smacked a two-run double to make it 10-4 Captains.

?There were a couple of pitches that we thought were third strikes that ended up being a walk and a three-run homer,? Aviles said. ?That cost us.?

Iribarren drove home another run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly, scoring Rasheed to trim the Captains? margin to 10-5. But those were all the runs the Power could muster.

The Power had runners on base in every inning except one.

?We had chances,? Aviles admitted. ?We just didn?t come up with the big hit. We don?t give up and we play hard all the time. I?m not complaining about that.?

Power starter Dave Johnson (0-1) got the loss, although all five runs he allowed were unearned. He struck out three in his two innings. Captains? reliever Brandon Rickert (2-0) was credited with the win.

Rasheed, who joined the Power Thursday, was making his second start in the leadoff spot of the lineup. He responded with two hits, a walk and two runs scored.

?He is a guy that puts the ball in play and can run,? Aviles said. ?He does a good job and he gives [Alcides] Escobar more fastballs to hit.?

Escobar had three hits and scored a run from the second slot in the order.

POWER POINTS: The Power failed in its attempt to put together its first three-game win streak of the season, but has won four of the last six games.

West Virginia will wrap up the current home stand with a 2:05 p.m. start today (1:05 Central) for ?Upper Kanawha Valley Community Day and Kids Day.? An eight-game road series with four games at Delmarva and four at Lakewood will begin Monday, with the Power returning home June 7 for two four-game series with Lexington and Lakewood.

Chris Hook, a Charleston Wheelers pitcher during the club?s 1990 South Atlantic League championship season, was in attendance at Saturday?s contest. Hook, the founder and president of ?At The Yard? ? a magazine devoted to minor league baseball ? was promoting the publication by giving complimentary copies out to fans and signing up new subscribers.

Stars give extra effort, only to fall to Smokies

Huntsville loses 4-3 to Tennessee in 11 innings

By SKIP VAUGHN

For The Times skipv@htimes.com

Huntsville Stars manager Don Money has been around baseball long enough to have seen it all.

He knows teams go through tough times when everything seems to be going wrong, so he's philosophical about the Stars' recent troubles.

"We're in a little funk right now," he said before Saturday night's game against the Tennessee Smokies.

"It seems like when we make an error, it costs us runs. When you're not going very well, those things jump up and bite you. That's why this game is so fickle at times. You just can't figure it out."

"We haven't gotten those breaks we usually get," Stars second baseman Callix Crabbe said. "We're not panicking. We're going to do one thing, and that is play hard. Baseball is a game of ups and downs. You've just got to try to even it out."

It didn't happen Saturday night, however.

The Smokies beat the Stars 4-3 on Jerry Gil's leadoff homer in the 11th inning before an announced crowd of 3,077 at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville reliever Mitch Stetter (0-3) took the loss.

Tennessee reliever Casey Daigle (2-0) got the win and Pete Sikaras earned his second save.

Tennessee took a 1-0 advantage in the first against Stars starter Glenn Woolard on Noochie Varner's RBI double, scoring Neb Brown, who had walked.

Stars pitching coach Rich Sauveur had a short night. He got thrown out by third base umpire Steve Cummings in the top of the third.

Crabbe hit a leadoff triple in the third and scored on Enrique Cruz's groundout for a 1-all tie against Smokies starter Enrique Gonzalez.

Tennessee (21-28) retook a 2-1 lead in the fourth with two outs when Jon Zeringue doubled and scored on Gil's single.

Huntsville (21-28) made it 2-all in the fifth when Brandon Gemoll tripled and scored on John Vanden Berg's single.

Kennard Bibbs walked, advanced to third on Vinny Rottino's single to right and eventually scored on Nelson Cruz's single for a 3-2 Stars lead in the sixth.

Khalid Ballouli, making his first relief appearance for the Stars, came on in the sixth and gave up a game-tying run in the seventh.

His wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed Brown to score from third.

The Stars and Smokies play the third of their four-game series tonight at 6:05 at Joe Davis Stadium.

The probable starters are Huntsville right-hander David Bradley (2-1, 1.69) and Tennessee left-hander Clint Goocher (4-2, 4.08).
