The solution was in Nashville all this time and we didn't even know.

According to the Media notes, Lehr was a catcher in college. He's already knocked in 3 tonight including a 2-R dinger!

Edit: Make that 5 RBI, on 3-3. The Babe has returned.

Man, I love following that young double play tandem at West Virginia. Now that Hernan has turned it on, those two guys seem to be feeding off one another.

Taubenheim gets the win today, but he has seemed to have come back down to earth the past few starts. Actually, both he and Sarfate have, whom many of us wanted to see promoted after their initial, early success this year.

Holy Hart! 5-5 night for the lanky slugger. Avg is now at .271.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER SNAP FIVE GAME LOSING STREAK

Charlie Lozada delivered a two-run double in the top of the first inning to give the Power a 2-0 lead. Jason Fransz cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning and Pete Maestrales tied the game in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single.

Freddy Parejo scored the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh on a throwing error by Delmarva third baseman Juan Gutierrez. Grant Richardson, Josh Brady and Nestor Corredor drove in the next three runs on back-to-back-to-back two-out RBI singles to give the Power a 6-2 lead. The Power added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. W.Va. Power notebook

By Doug Smock

Charleston Gazette Staff writer

The 30 major-league baseball teams are preparing to restock their farm systems via the amateur draft Tuesday, but don?t expect a roster shuffle for the West Virginia Power just yet.

And if the parent Milwaukee Brewers follow the script written by Baseball America, the first-round draft pick will be a year from heading to the West Virginia Power.

That publication, considered a bible of sorts for the minor leagues, sees high school outfielder Cameron Maybin of Asheville, N.C., heading to the Brewers with the fifth overall pick. That will certainly send him to one of the Brewers? two rookie-league teams, in Arizona and Helena, Mont.

Any shakeup in the Power roster would come later in the season as players excel at Helena, a Pioneer League member. (Milwaukee does not have a short-season Class A team.)

As Andy Barch, the Power?s broadcaster and director of media relations, tells, the Brewers won?t send a high school player directly to Class A. But a promising college player may be a different story.

Maybin played for Asheville?s state-champion Roberson High and also starred last summer for Cincinnati?s well-known Midland Redskins of Connie Mack ball. He hit five home runs and was named the tournament?s most valuable player as the Redskins won the Connie Mack World Series title.

Known as a ?five-tool? player, Maybin was a batboy for the Asheville Tourists from 1999 to 2002. As Chris Hook?s ?In The Yard? magazine notes, there is a legacy to that chore ? author Thomas Wolfe, North Carolina basketball coach Roy Williams and future ironman Cal Ripken Jr. also served in that capacity.

When Maybin was batboy, he already was hitting home runs out of McCormick Field in batting practice.

***

The Power (17-37) finished the first half of one of its longer eight-game road trips Thursday by beating Delmarva 8-2, thus avoiding a four-game sweep. From Salisbury, Md., the team bused to Lakewood, N.J., for four games with the BlueClaws.

After that series comes a punishing stretch for the Power players. After a night game Monday, the team travels 525 miles back home, getting in around 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Power begins its eight-game home stand Tuesday night and then plays a businessperson?s special Wednesday afternoon.

A 15-inning game, such as happened last week at Appalachian Power Park against Lake County, would be most unwelcome.

***

The Power erupted for 15 hits Thursday, scoring six times combined in the seventh and eighth innings.

After Delmarva starter Carlos Perez left after the sixth inning with the game tied 2-2, the Power roughed up reliever Ryan Schwabe.

West Virginia went ahead in the seventh on a throwing error off an Alcides Escobar bunt. After a double play, Grant Richardson, Josh Brady and Nestor Corredor all hit RBI singles.

Freddy Parejo tripled to lead off the eighth inning and Escobar doubled him in. Escobar scored on a two-out error.

Four of the six runs off Schwabe (0-1) were unearned.

Dave Johnson (1-1) picked up the win for West Virginia despite yielding a game-tying run in the sixth. That run was unearned, and was set up on an error by Josh Murray.

The victory snapped a five-game losing streak.

***

Infielder William Lewis, who was placed on the disabled list with a sore right hand, could be back on the field by the beginning of the home stand. There is no timetable set for hard-luck right-hander Mark Rogers, the 2004 first-round draft pick.

Rogers developed a deep blood blister on the middle finger of his throwing hand May 22. The objective is simple: Get it healed 100 percent, without infection.

***

Carlos Corporan took the team lead with his fifth home run in the Power?s 4-3 loss to the Shorebirds Wednesday. One of the Power?s two switch-hitters, he has smacked homers from both sides of the plate.

From which side does he hit best? Barch thinks the left side, even though Corporan is a natural righty.

Then again, ?He hasn?t had a whole lot of opportunities from the right side,? Barch said.

Final, Game One: Brevard County 2, Daytona (Cubs) 1, ten innings, scheduled for seven innings

Final, Game Two: Brevard County 7, Daytona (Cubs) 6

No doubleheader summary from the home team Manatees yet (if at all), but fortunately the Cubs' site is outstanding...

Brevard County Doubleheader Summary from the Cubs' Site:

CUBS FIND DOUBLE-TROUBLE IN BREVARD COUNTY

Daytona Lost Both Ends of The Double-Header To The Last Place Manatees In Heart-Breaking Fashion and Have Now Fallen To an Even 25-25 On The Season

by: Bo Fulginiti

VIERA, Fla?It may be a bit premature for the fat lady to be singing the Daytona Cubs a farewell tune in the FSL East, but on Thursday night in Viera she was humming a few warm-up notes awfully loud.

On a night with a scheduled double-header against the last place Brevard County Manatees at Space Coast Stadium, the Cubs were in desperate need of a few wins and a little momentum heading into the final stretch drive of the first half. But apparently the Manatees were more interested in playing the role of ?spoiler? instead, as Brevard County rallied in both games with some late-inning fireworks to win Game 1 in 10 innings by a final of 2-1 and Game 2 by a score of 7-6.

Cubs righty Carlos Marmol got the nod in Game 1 and went six strong innings as he gave up just one earned run on six hits but was slapped with the no-decision as Brevard County saved their best for the extra frames. The scheduled seven inning game eventually crept into the 10th inning with both sides clinging to a 1-1 tie, until Manatees centerfielder Steve Moss hit a sacrifice fly off Cubs reliever Weston O?Brien (2-2) to right-centerfield with the bases loaded and one out to score right fielder Travis Ezi with the game-winning run to seal the deal.

Manatees lefty Ryan Anderson made the start, and the southpaw pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless ball before yielding to the Brevard County ?pen in the second inning. Manatees reliever Jeremy Lewis (1-3) came in to pitch the 10th for Brevard, and was credited with a scoreless frame and his first win of the season.

In Game 2 the Cubs looked for redemption and got off to the hot start with three first inning runs off Manatees starter Ty Taubenheim (8-1), as Daytona banged out three runs on five hits capped off by a two-RBI single from left fielder Kevin Collins. But once again Brevard County got their licks in at the plate, as Manatees catcher C.J. Medlin went 3-for-3 with a three-run home run, two singles and two runs scored to lead the charge for Brevard who would score seven runs, including three in the sixth to hang on and win.

Anderson Tavarez (1-6) got the start in the second game and was charged with the loss, and Taubenheim won his league-leading eighth game of the season for the Manatees.

Two bright spots offensively for Daytona in the double-header were third baseman Scott Moore and right fielder J.J. Johnson. Moore went 3-for-8 with a pair of homers to increase his team-leading homerun total to 12. Johnson went a scorching 6-for-7 including a double, four singles, a homerun and two runs scored in the two contests to raise his average to .291.

With the two losses Daytona has now dropped to 25-25 and is back at the .500 mark for the first time since April 26 when the Cubs were 9-9. The Manatees improved to 21-32 with the two victories and stated their case for a promising second half of the season for the fans of Brevard County.

The two teams will once again go head-to-head for a double-dip on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, as lefty J.R. Mathes (3-2, 3.46) will face Manatees lefty Josh Habel (0-3, 2.95) in Game 1, and southpaw Sean Marshall (4-2, 1.73) will take the mound in Game 2 against Brevard County righty Bo Hall (0-0, 3.94). Both games will be seven inning contests with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. EST (5:05 Central).

Brevard County Game One Box Score:

Great job by the bullpen, gotta feel good for a previously struggling Kenny Durost; lots of baserunning activity for both sides in a 2-1 game -- big night for Brewer farmhands getting picked off base -- Lou Palmisano throws out two, both in a critical 8th inning...

Final: Mississippi (Braves) 5, Huntsville 3

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Braves Big Inning Beats Stars

Scott Thorman?s two-out, two-run single capped a decisive four-run second inning in Mississippi?s 5-3 win over Huntsville Thursday night in the third game of a four-game series at Trustmark Park in Pearl. The Braves won their sixth straight game to even their record at 27-27 and pull to within a half game of the lead in the South Division after division leader Montgomery and second place Birmingham were rained out for a second time in three nights. The Stars have lost six of their last seven games to drop to 22-32 overall and 10-20 on the road. Mississippi has won each of the last six games against the Stars and outscored Huntsville 33-9 in doing so.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. singled with one out in the first inning and scored on a double by Nelson Cruz to give the Stars the early 1-0 lead one night after they failed to score in the first inning by stranding Callix Crabbe at third base with one out. Cruz extended his hitting streak to a season-best six games and has knocked in a run in six of his last seven games. The Braves tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Jeff Francoeur sacrifice fly.

Crabbe opened the second with a base hit, stole second base, his first since May 16, and scored on a two-out single by starting pitcher Glenn Woolard, who picked up his first hit and first run batted in of the season.

Wes Timmons opened the home second inning with a single and scored when Jon Schuerholz followed with a double to knock in his third run of the series and 11th of the season. Juan Velasquez advanced Schuerholz to third base with a fly ball out before Woolard walked Braves pitcher Matt Wright and Gregor Blanco to load the bases. Onil Joseph then singled to right field to chase home Schuerholz to put the home team ahead 3-2. Francoeur struck out for the second out but Thorman followed with a line drive single to center field on an 0-1 pitch to plate Wright and Blanco to make it 5-2 and extend his hitting streak to 17 games. Seven of the last 11 batters walked by Woolard have scored after only one of the first 19 he put on with a free pass crossed the plate.

The Stars loaded the bases against Wright in the fourth on walks to Crabbe and John Vanden Berg and a bunt base hit by Guilder Rodriguez, who was giving Enrique Cruz his first night off of the season at shortstop. Jeff Winchester, pinch-hitting for Woolard, was called out on strikes on three pitches, Kennard Bibbs delivered Crabbe with a sacrifice fly and Gwynn struck out for the final out of the frame. Crabbe scored twice in a game for only the second time this season.

The Stars chased Wright in the sixth after a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Alec Zumwalt moved Vanden Berg to third and Rodriguez to second base with two outs. The Braves called on southpaw Steve Kent to face the lefty-hitting Kennard Bibbs, who lined out to Thorman at first base for the final out of the inning. Kent worked a perfect seventh, Glen Tucker a perfect eighth before Jorge Vasquez took over in the ninth.

Vinny Rottino was hit by a pitch with one out and moved to second base on an infield hit by Bibbs, who ended a 16 at-bat hitless streak, before Vasquez fanned Gwynn and Nelson Cruz to end the game and earn his second save in as many nights and seventh of the season.

The series concludes Friday night with left-hander Ryan Costello making the start for the Stars against Braves left-hander Matt Coenen, who will come off the disabled list to take the hill. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Nashville 8, Albuquerque (Marlins) 3

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Jump Back Into First Place With 8-3 Win

ALBUQUERQUE ? Sounds starting pitcher Justin Lehr did it all on Thursday evening at Isotopes Park, hurting Albuquerque from the mound and from the batter?s box in Nashville?s 8-3 victory over the Isotopes in the third game of a four-game series.

The 27-year-old right-hander earned his first victory as a starter since the 2001 season after allowing one run on five hits in six innings of work and belted the first home run of his seven-year professional career to highlight a 3-for-3, five-RBI night at the plate. The former collegiate catcher played in the Oakland Athletics? farm system for his first six seasons and never batted before joining the Brewers organization last off-season.

Outfielder Corey Hart also did his part for the Sounds, increasing his career-best hitting streak to 11 games with a 5-for-5 evening that included four singles and his fourth triple of the campaign. The five hits for the 23-year-old prospect are a career high and mark the first five-hit effort by a Sounds player in over a year, dating back to Tony Alvarez?s five knocks on September 1, 2003 at Isotopes Park.

Somewhat lost in the shuffle was Nashville second baseman Rickie Weeks belting his 11th home run of the season to highlight a 2-for-5 evening for the 22-year-old.

With the victory, Nashville (29-26) pulled into sole possession of first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division for the first time since May 4.

Lehr spotted the Sounds a 2-0 lead in the top of the second with a two-out, two-run single to right off Isotopes starter Ben Howard.

PCL slugging leader Josh Willingham improved his numbers in the bottom of the frame when he put Albuquerque on the board with a leadoff homer to center off Lehr, making it a 2-1 game.

Nashville added a pair of runs in the fourth to up the advantage to 4-1. Hart led off with a triple and scored on Ryan Knox?s one-out sacrifice fly. Lehr followed with his first career longball, a two-out shot to right off Howard.

Weeks led off the fifth with his 11th home run of the season, tying the second baseman with Prince Fielder for the Nashville team lead.

Lehr struck again for the Sounds in the sixth with his second two-run single of the night, this one off Isotopes reliever Mike Flannery. Hart and Julio Mosquera scored on the knock, which gave the right-hander five RBIs on the evening. Weeks contributed his second run batted in of the night later in the frame, when his singled home Knox to increase the Nashville lead to 8-1.

The Isotopes tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth against Sounds reliever Andy Pratt to complete the evening?s scoring. Chris Aguila plated the first run of the an RBI double before ex-Sound Jason Wood delivered a sacrifice fly.

Lehr (5-4) earned his team-leading fifth victory and his first win as a starting pitcher since July 28, 2001, when he was pitching for Double-A Midland in the A?s chain. Howard (1-1) was tagged with his first loss of the year after surrendering five runs (four earned) in his five frames.

Chad Paronto tossed a scoreless ninth for Nashville to run his current scoreless streak to 12 1/3 innings over eight appearances out of the Sounds bullpen.

The teams wrap up the series with an 8:05 p.m. CT finale on Friday evening. Nashville right-hander Jose Capellan (3-2, 4.74) takes the hill to face Albuquerque southpaw Les Walrond (3-2, 3.94).
