Indianapolis Post-Doubleheader Notes:

The Indians split a road doubleheader with Syracuse Tuesday to bring their record to 40-44.

The Indianapolis Indians squandered a four-run lead to drop the first game of the doubleheader at Syracuse, 5-4.

The Indians got off to a quick start, with Corey Hart banging his 13th home run in the top of the first inning, scoring Peter Bergeron. The Indians extended their lead to 4-0 in the second inning. Centerfielder Dave Krynzel reached base and Trent Durrington scored on an error, and a fielder?s choice by Bergeron scored Steve Scarborough.

In the bottom of the second inning, Shawn Fagan singled in two runs after an Indians error, but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit to a double.

Following another Indians error in the third, Gabe Gross sacrificed home a run and Jorge Sequea scored on a Glenn Williams single to knot the score at 4.

With two outs in the eighth (extra innings in a seven-inning doubleheader), Shawn Fagan singled down the left field line off of lefty Chris Michalak with runners on first and third to score the winning run.

In the nightcap, Brandon Gemoll went 2-for-4 with a home run, one run scored and three RBI to pace the Indians to a 4-3 victory. Krynzel scored on Gemoll's groundout in the top of the first inning, Gemoll hit a solo home run in the third and scored Bergeron with a single to center in the fifth.

In the sixth, Matt Erickson safety squeezed Luis Figueroa home to stretch the Tribe's lead to 4-1.

Despite giving up a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh, reliever Ben Ford pitched 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the season.

Going 2-for-5 with a walk and a run scored in Tuesday's ballgames, Steve Scarborough extends his hitting streak to seven games.

Final: Billings (Reds) 10, Helena 6

Helena Game Story from the Billings Gazette:

Mustangs touch up Walker

By ED WEST - Billings Gazette - 07/07/04

Helena's Edwin Walker came in to Tuesday's game with the best earned-run averaged in the Pioneer League. But the Billings Mustangs put a dent in Walker's impressive 1.84 mark during a 10-6 victory over the Brewers at Cobb Field.

The Mustangs amassed six hits, all for extra bases, and scored five runs against the left-hander. They chased him during a five-run fifth inning and didn't treat his successors too well either, finishing with 11 hits (eight of them for extra bases).

Bobby Mosby and Eyoxy Esparragoza hit home runs for the Mustangs, who broke a two-game losing streak.

Lawhorn said the Mustangs have been trying to be more patient at the plate and get good pitches to hit.

"We were swinging at bad pitches in hitters counts. We made him (Walker) come down in the zone and we hit it hard,'' said Lawhorn, who had a triple and a double.

One of the hardest hit balls was Mosby's fifth homer, a three-run shot down the left field line that capped the big fifth inning and gave the Mustangs a 7-2 lead.

Paul Janish doubled to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice by Drew Phillips, Drew Anderson doubled to left to score Janish. Lawhorn followed with a two-bagger and Walker was lifted in favor of Ryan Marion.

He didn't fare any better, walking Craig Tatum and then yielding Mosby's home run on a 3-1 count.

"I felt real good at the plate,'' said Mosby, who also had a triple. "I made an adjustment. He (Walker) is pretty good, but he was missing some of his spots. I sat on the fastball.''

Esparragoza's home run, a solo shot down the right field line in the seventh, gave the Mustangs a 10-4 lead.

"We got some clutch hits and our pitches made the right pitches at the right time,'' said Mustangs' manager Luis Aguayo. "The kids are working hard. They are disciplined and getting good pitches to hit.''

Jared Sanders, the fourth of six pitchers for the Mustangs, got the victory which was his first of the season. Sanders worked 1 1/3 innings, giving up just one hit and striking out two.

One of the those strikeouts came against Grant Richardson, who had a .424 average coming into the game.

Sanders was brought in to face Richardson with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh. Sanders got him looking on a 2-2 pitch.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pounder committed a throwing error, but a double play helped him get out of the inning.

Brad Morenko started the ninth, but was hit by a line drive on his pitching (right) arm by Steve Sollman and had to be taken out of the game. Johnny Dillard was summoned got the final two outs.

Starter Ramon Ramirez worked 4 2/3 innings (two hits, two earned runs) and was replaced by Todd Johnson with two runners on and two outs. Johnson threw just two pitches and got out of the jam by inducing Sollman to hit into a force play.

Tony Festa hit a home run for the North Division leading Brewers (11-7).

Four balks were called in the game by base umpire Shanna Kook. The third one was protested by Aguayo and catcher Tatum, who was ejected.

"They're getting too technical,'' Aguayo said. "They need to use some common sense.''

In progress: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 8, High Desert 7, 7th inning stretch at Rancho's Epicenter

Mavericks have rallied from an 8-1 deficit, with Troy Farnsworth's grand slam the big blow, the boys just had first and third, no one out in the 7th down by the one run, but failed to tie it up -- late-nighters, give a listen as things wrap up...

That was the Hunstville offense I think many of us expected to be seeing a lot of this season. Hopefully, we will see plenty more. And Woolard continues to be lights out. If Saenz is out for an extended bit of time, he would be a perfect fill-in.

Where is Salome???

We believe 2004 5th round catcher Angel Salome has opened the season on the DL -- we'll be working to confirm with the Brewers. If we get any news on the nature of the injury, it will likely be extremely general in nature. We might be better off asking for a time frame for his return.

Gwynn with a triple tonight, it certainly seems like he's been banging a few more extra base hits lately. We're at the stage of the season where raising the old batting average can take a long time with 1-3 and a walk nights. Weeks also has been smacking more doubles lately notice that he only has 3 less than Brad Nelson. All good to see.

I think all 3 of the guys in "mini-slumps" at H-ville will improve in the 2nd half...you'd sure think so. Gwynn and Weeks are just a year out of college, where for the most part, no one can throw a breaking ball for a strike. Prince is 20. All are learning and adjusting. That's why they call it the minors.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Dormant over the first two days in Alabama?s capital city, the Stars? offense awoke Tuesday night, equaling their season-high with 17 hits in a 9-5 rout of Montgomery at Riverwalk Stadium. Huntsville (8-5, 40-43) snapped a two-game slide and remained one game back of Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half standings.

Trailing 1-0, Huntsville scored five unanswered runs. All-star Brad Nelson ripped a run-scoring double in the third, then Johnny Raburn and Ozzie Chavez led off the fourth with bunt singles, both advancing an extra base when second baseman Fernando Cortez?s underhand flip of Chavez?s bunt skidded under first baseman Eric Reece?s glove and bounced up against the tarp. Kade Johnson singled home a run and Rickie Weeks plated another with a sacrifice fly. With two outs, Prince Fielder blooped a single to right and Nelson followed with a flare to center, where Amado German lunged but came up empty, the ball caroming off German?s glove for a single and error, scoring both Chavez and Johnson for a 5-1 Stars lead.

With Huntsville up 5-3 in the fifth, Weeks doubled home Raburn, and Huntsville sealed the game with a three-run ninth. Chris Barnwell was plunked and Raburn singled, then Weeks? two-out double scored them both. Tony Gwynn Jr.?s triple scored Weeks to make it 9-3, Stars.

Glenn Woolard (2-0) notched his second win in relief, fanning one and allowing one hit over 2 1/3 innings. Jason Cromer (5-7) suffered the loss, permitting nine hits and five runs, three earned, with three walks and two strikeouts over four innings. Roberto Giron tossed a scoreless, hitless frame for Huntsville, and John Novinsky recorded his ninth save, giving up two runs on three hits while fanning three over two innings.

Lefty Matt Ford (1-2, 4.14) meets Biscuits left-hander Mike Prochaska (1-4, 5.02) in the series finale on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game Show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

STARS BREAK OUT

The best recipe for a long ballgame is a lot of pitches outside the plate, and a lot of walks...... That was the signature for this game. Ten walks, three hit batters, a pair of wild pitches, and 26 hits........ Jason Cromer in the first inning threw 31 pitches. I can't imagine how many Dennis Sarfate threw tonight......... Add it up and you have nearly a three and a half-hour game, the 4th longest nine-inning game of the year........ Sharing the radiocast tonight with Robert Portnoy once again was outfielder Ryan Knox, so it was another enjoyable evening next to the radio, listening to the clubhouse stories, the insights on hitters and pitchers, and much more inside information, made all the more enjoyable this time by hearing the Stars step all over the Biscuits on 17 hits -- a season-high that was last achieved back on April 18 vs. Montgomery.

The Stars side-stepped another bad outing by Sarfate, who seems to be paying the price for the jump from the Midwest League this year. Sarfate is 1-3 with a 6.59 ERA in his last seven starts now going back to the start of June....... 23 strikeouts, 21 walks, five HRs, and five+ innings in only three of those starts........ The key was a four-run inning for the Stars in the 4th inning, and the solid middle relief of Glenn Woolard (2-0, 2.66) and Roberto Giron (1.31 ERA)....... The bullpen has been the most improved part of this second half.

With the score tied 1-1, Johnny Raburn and Ozzie Chavez led off with a pair of bunt singles. Raburn reached third as the ball hit by Chavez skidded under the glove of Eric Reece and dribbled up the first base line. Ozzie scampered to second as the ball bounced up against the tarp.......Kade Johnson, without an RBI since June 17, rifled a 3-1 pitch to the left side for a single to drive in Raburn to put the Stars in front........ Chavez scored from third on a deep fly ball to center by Rickie Weeks, making it 3-1, the 5th sacrifice fly by a Stars batter in six games. The Stars have hit 25 sac flies this year and are on pace to have the most in five years by the time the season's over......... After Tony Gwynn, Jr. flied out for the second out, Prince Fielder took an outside fast ball and sent it to shallow right. Aaron Clark dove for it, but came up empty. Kade advanced to third....... Brad Nelson gave the Stars a 5-1 lead, a big morale boost after losing twice to the Biscuits, with a two-run single. Nelson, who just missed a home run in the 3rd, hit a change-up to shallow center he thought would be caught for the third out, but Amado German, who probably broke late for the ball, came up empty in trying to rush in for it. It came off the heel of his glove, allowing Fielder and Johnson to score. Brad took second on the error by German, but got credit for the hit.

Dennis Sarfate looked not to be the pitcher tonight to keep a 5-1 lead........ He struck out a pair, but after loading the bases without giving up a hit, then walking in a pair of runners, Frank Kremblas came out with the hook........ Glenn Woolard threw one pitch to the dangerous Chiaron Isenia (7-for-12 this series) to strand three Montgomery hitters.

The Biscuits tried to rally with a 6-3 Stars lead in the 5th. With two out, Clark laced a 1-2 fastball by Woolard and bounced it off a little notch in the right field corner at Riverwalk. It bounced around for Jamie Gann, and Clark was safe on third with a triple, but Martin ended the inning by lining out to left.

Though Rickie Weeks drove in the go-ahead run in the 5th with a double to center, the three-run 9th for the Stars gave this win authority........ With two out, Chris Barnwell on third and Johnny Raburn on first, Weeks hit his second double of the game down the right field line -- an opposite-field drive....... Rickie's been trying to hit more to the opposite field the last few weeks. That drove in two to make it 8-3....... Weeks is now 8-for-26 (.308) in July with five doubles. Against Montgomery this year, he's hitting .320......... Tony Gwynn, Jr., red-hot of late, (12-for-29 on a seven-game hitting streak) tripled off the glove of Brian Martin, another opposite-field hit, to make it 9-3.

John Novinsky had one of the sloppiest saves you'll ever see, giving up in succession in the 9th, a single, a hit batter, a run-scoring wild pitch, and two more singles, but finished the game by getting Eric Reece to hit into a double play --- Weeks-to-Chavez-to Fielder.

The Carolina Mudcats lost their all-star catcher Josh Willingham to a major league promotion. The Florence native made his debut Tuesday night for the Florida Marlins, going 0-for-3 and striking out......... On the subject of promotions, former Stars catcher Brian Moon was recently promoted to Class AAA-Tacoma by the Seattle Mariners. With Class AA-San Antonio (Texas), he was hitting just .167 for the Missions in 16 games, after being rescued from the Independent Leagues. In four games for Tacoma, he's 4-for-14 (.286) with a double........ Nestor Corredor, who was 0-for-7 in a couple of starts earlier in the year for the Stars, is hitting .350 in the Arizona League, the bottom rung in the Brewer chain.
