Got a kick out of the game summary from the Great Falls site for Thursday's game:

The Sox would score twice in the top of the eighth inning to cut the score to 4-3. Then in the ninth with runners on the corners and two outs, pinch runner Jhonny Rivera would attempt to steal home plate. Catcher Charlie Lozada's glove sat on the first base side of the plate as Rivera slide in untagged. He was called out by plate umpire Matt Henzel to preserve the Brewers victory. It was the third blown call in two games, but the first to affect the outcome of a game.

ARIZONA ROOKIE: TBD at home vs. the Giants' toddlers, 10:30 AM local Maryvale time...

Link Report Bonus:

Congrats to Huntsville LHP Jeff Housman, this week's Southern League Pitcher of the Week. Housman went 2-0 with a 0.75 ERA, allowing six hits, one earned run and five walks while striking out 14 in 12 innings.

Jeff Housman, giving 33rd round picks who have crappy first pro years, eternal hope -- still the most amazing transformation of any player in the organization for the past several years -- still only 22 years old (23 in August).

Huntsville Times:

Chicken's act has always played well in Huntsville

Jerry Felts atjerryf@htimes.com

He has spent 60 percent of his life watching baseball through a fuzzy mascot head, so it would be understandable if Ted Giannoulas confused a game in Huntsville with one in Helena, Mont.

Then the man better known as The Famous Chicken mentions a Stars player who had the winning hit in a game at Joe Davis Stadium eight years ago - and remembers a record crowd was on hand - and you realize Giannoulas does indeed have fond memories of previous trips here.

"I've had a lot of great experiences in the past in Huntsville," he says from his Chattanooga hotel room Thursday afternoon.

"Maybe the best game I've ever attended in my life was a Fourth of July game (actually July 5, 1996).

"It was a record crowd and the game went all the way to the bottom of the ninth inning against Birmingham. The bases were loaded with two out, and Charles Poe (a former Baron) came up and the count ran full, 3 and 2. Then the next six-to-eight pitches, they were all fouled back.

"The pitcher was bringing fastballs and Charles was trying to tee it up," Giannoulas recalls. "Then he hit one that went deep over the center field fence rising, and the place went nuts. It was delirious."

The Famous Chicken is back for his annual visit tonight at 7:05 when the Stars host Mobile for the second game of a four-game series.

You've likely heard the story before: a $2 an hour gig as the mascot for radio station KGB in San Diego has evolved into a year-round job that's earned Giannoulas millions over the last three decades.

An interest in comedy combined with his love of sports has created the most beloved mascot ever to grace stadiums and arenas. And the man inside The Famous Chicken continues to enjoy every minute of it.

"When I first started I was just going by the seat of my tail," Giannoulas says. "I didn't know what I was doing.

"Now I've got gags and routines that I do. I still improvise a little bit."

Giannoulas is seldom at a loss for words, but inquire if there's a minor league ballpark he has never appeared in and there's a long pause as he ponders the question. He got rained out in Montgomery earlier this season, but plans to go there later this month.

"I don't think I've missed a minor league town," he says. "The only major league town I've missed is Boston - I might be banned there and not even know it.

"The Celtics almost had me in with Red Auerbach in charge years ago. The Boston Bruins have never had me in, no Boston colleges have had me there. I've never done a sports event in Boston.

"That's the only one in all of North America. I've been from Anchorage all the way down to Mexico City and everybody in between."

It's an act that continues to produce smiles.

"I just try to lend a few laughs in there," Giannoulas says, "and it seems to play well with the audience."

Hate to take away from a Snapper win tonight, and it's real easy to bash on the kid, I suppose, because we've seen barely even a glimpse of promise. 2002 2nd rounder Josh Murray won't even be 20 until August, but without that glimmer of hope that he can muster any type of professional hitting, Murray is a $925,000 investment that remains the most puzzling selection of the Jack Zduriencik era. Hoping only to be taken by the fifth round, Murray's early second round selection left he and his family thrilled and us baffled, especially when you review here what we read at the time about the two incredibly significant injuries he sustained within a year's time. There's no reason to believe that Josh isn't a fine kid and hard worker, but I'd appreciate hearing madbad2000 or other Beloit regulars comment on whether they're even seeing the raw tools of a propsect at this point...

Murray signs deal to chase dream

St. Petersburg Times, Jun 29, 2002

by MIKE READLING

There was no doubt in Josh Murray's mind that he was going to play baseball for a living.

No doubt that one day he would sign a professional contract, head off to some faraway town to star for a minor-league team and then show up in a major-league stadium someday.

"It was a dream of mine since I was a little kid," Murray said. "I remember my dad would always throw me batting practice and my mom and little sister would be in the outfield picking up the balls."

Of course, when he began falling asleep to that dream, Murray had no idea of the obstacles he was going to have to overcome to make it a reality.

The former Jesuit shortstop, selected in the second round (No. 48 overall) of the draft by the Brewers earlier this month, signed a contract Thursday. It included a signing bonus of $825,000 and a clause that the team will pay $100,000 for an education at the college of Murray's choice.

The signing of the contract also signaled the successful conclusion of a two-year comeback from a pair of injuries that would have led most high school players to concentrate on academics.

"It was quite a thrill considering he wasn't allowed to throw a ball just a year and a half ago," said Lauren Murray, Josh's mother.

Murray's unusual route to professional baseball began in the middle of his sophomore year.

During a game against rival Sarasota, Murray got plunked on the wrist by a fastball. Although the pain took a few minutes to kick in, Murray will never forget the sound.

"It sounded like a wooden bat hitting a ball," Murray said. "I started walking down to first base and I realized I couldn't move my arm."

The wrist was broken in three places and Murray's season - on the field - was over.

He continued to show up at every practice and cheered as his teammates romped to the 2000 state championship. He called it one of the most difficult things he has ever endured.

He didn't realize it was about to get worse.

A few months before his junior season, Murray was warming up at a showcase in Sarasota conducted by Jesuit coach John Crumbley. That's when he felt the pop.

Murray had a feeling something was wrong, but struggled through an inning anyway. Later, an MRI revealed a torn ligament in his elbow.

His options were Tommy John surgery, one of the most risky operations an athlete can undergo, or the possible end of his career.

"That was a tough decision," Murray said. "That was huge for my family. It took a couple of weeks for them to decide that we would do it. There was no decision for me, I didn't want my arm to hurt the rest of my life."

Murray's father, Dennis, is a former minor-leaguer in the Blue Jays organization and managed to get his son an appointment with renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Andrews performed the surgery, which involved stretching a tendon from Murray's lower forearm and tying it through two holes drilled in his elbow.

Typical recovery time is 12 to 18 months. Murray was back on the field in 10.

"My parents pushed me real hard," Murray said. "And I was sick of sitting around. I thought of baseball every second, every single day that I was going to rehab I thought of it. Sitting on the bench watching the games was the worst part for me. I'm very competitive and it was hard to be on the bench."

As a senior, Murray avoided major injuries and established himself as one of the best defensive shortstops in the nation.

Murray entered the playoffs with a .410 average and finished the season hitting .392. By signing with Milwaukee, he gave up a full scholarship to the University of Maryland.

In a whirlwind couple of days, Murray went from Auburn, Ala., where he was playing with his travel team Wednesday, to Tampa to sign a contract Thursday, to Milwaukee for a physical Friday and then off to Utah to join the Ogden Raptors, the Brewers' advanced rookie team in the Pioneer League.

The Brewers are flying his parents to Ogden for his first game this weekend.

Despite the pomp and circumstance sure to surround the team's second-round pick in his professional debut, Murray's mind-set will not be muddied. The last part of that small child's original goal is still out there.

"Hopefully now I'll be able to make it to the majors as quick as possible," Murray said.

Beloit Game Summary from the Battle Creek Site:

The Battle Creek Yankees dropped their third straight game 10-5 to the Beloit Snappers Friday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. Three Battle Creek errors led to three Beloit runs.

Beloit jumped out to an early lead plating two runs in the first. Two throwing errors by Battle Creek allowed the two runs to come in. The Snapper scored three more in the third for a 5-0 lead.

Battle Creek got on the board in the bottom of the third scoring one run on a sacrifice fly by Hector Made. The Yankees scored three in the fourth to cut the lead to 5-4. Jason VanMeetren had an RBI double and Willie Vasquez smacked a two-run home run.

However, the Snappers came right back with three runs in the top of the fifth to stretch the lead to 8-4. Beloit added two more runs in the seventh for a 10-4 lead.

The Yankees were able to score one more run in the eighth on a John Urick RBI double, making it 10-5.

Yankees? starter Chase Wright (5-8) took the loss, giving up eight hits and eight runs ? only five of them earned ? in five innings of work. Ben Moore and Heath Castle each pitched two innings in relief.

The Yankees now stand at 7-9 for the second half. The series continues Saturday night at 7. Brandon Harmsen will go for his ninth win of the season for Battle Creek. He will take on Brian Montalbo for Beloit.

Stars hang on; lots of wins in the Link Report the last couple of days...

Huntsville Box Score:

Rickie Weeks on base four more times; really, many of you have to get past the batting average -- here's a reminder of what out friend and Huntsville historian and season ticket holder David Weiser wrote earlier today:

Even though most of the fans at Joe D. see only Rickie's .250 average, I see the wrists of Hank Aaron and the hands of Bill Mazeroski and that's no exaggeration. To see him play is to see a future major league All-Star in action....... The hits will come. They may not be coming enough to suit either me or the rest of the Huntsville fans, but they will come........

....during rickie's brief stint in Milw the first thing I noticed in the first AB was the uncanny similarity between Weeks and Hank Aaron. This first thing out of my mouth was something along the lines of "he looks exactly like hank aaron". The stance is there, hopefully the production will follow!!!

Arizona Brewer Box Score:

OK, now we're at the point where some national attention must be on the way, even if this is the lowest rung of the minors. We better not find out that 2B Hernan Iribarren just turned 25 instead of 20. 3-for-3, two doubles, a triple, and a walk -- the dude is now 32-for-62 for a sick .516 batting average, and showing some pop. Gee, can we overlook that error tonight? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Look for some fun stuff on Iribarren within the Arizona Brewer thread shortly. If I had a son, I'd legally change his name to Hernan today. What the heck, let me wake Sara and tell her about her new name right now; by the way, sweet pitching here and welcome back, Ben Diggins -- the Brewer organization loves all it's "Ben's"...

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

On the heels of being named the starting pitcher for the International League All-Star Game, Ben Hendrickson (8-2) shut out the Ottawa Lynx Friday night as Indianapolis defeated the visitors, 3-0, in a rain shortened contest.

Hendrickson allowed four hits, walked two and struck out one in five innings.

Indianapolis first baseman Chris Coste sparked the Tribe with two hits, including a double and two-run home run off losing pitcher, starter Sean Bergman (6-8). Both clubs collected four hits as Indianapolis (42-45) earned its second consecutive win over the Lynx (40-50)

QUOTES:

Stan Kyles, Tribe pitching coach on Hendrickson?s performance:

"It just shows you the savvy that Hendrickson has because he did not have his fastball tonight," said Kyles. "He knows how to pitch. He had an average curve ball this evening as the rain made it difficult to execute. I am happy to see Ben?s growth and direction. It makes you feel proud to know what he has accomplished. He goes about his business the right way."

Chris Coste on offensive performance:

"I got one good pitch to hit and I was aggressive with it," Coste said. "Right now, we?re a little banged up and the All-Star break will be helpful. We need to get on a streak and build confidence. Our offense needs to start producing. We?ve had good pitching lately and the past two games, we?ve had timely hitting. During the month of August, we?re going to play a lot of divisional opponents and we believe that we can get back into this race."

NOTES:

The Tribe is 12,078 fans away from the five millionth fan to watch the Indians play since Victory Field opened July 11, 1996.

Matt Erickson?s contract was purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers and the Brewers optioned right-handed pitcher Wes Obermueller to Indianapolis, who will join the team after the All-Star break (July 15).

Brian Bowles was activated from the DL and released.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Stars Ride Six-Run Sixth to Victory Over Bears

After sprinting to a 6-0 lead, Huntsville hung on for a 6-5 win over Mobile on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (10-6, 42-44) won their second straight over the Bay Bears (5-11, 45-41) and reclaimed sole possession of first place in the Southern League West, one game clear of second-place Birmingham.

The bottom of the second opened with Jamie Gann?s line-drive double down the rightfield line. Chris Barnwell laced a double into the leftfield corner, scoring Gann for the Stars? first run. Ozzie Chavez singled inside the first-base bag, scoring Barnwell from second. Joel Alvarado drew a walk, and pitcher Glenn Woolard struck out trying to lay down a sacrifice bunt. Rickie Weeks ripped a single to left, scoring Chavez and sending Alvarado to second, then Tony Gwynn Jr. walked. Prince Fielder?s bases-loaded walk forced in Alvarado, and Brad Nelson doubled deep to left, plating Weeks and Gwynn for a 6-0 Stars lead.

Mobile halved the lead in the fourth, when Marcus Nettles and Josh Barfield singled with one out. Rico Washington followed with his second homer in as many games, a three-run shot to right that pulled the Bears within 6-3. In the seventh, Mobile?s Kennard Jones was hit by a pitch, and Josh Barfield homered for the second straight night, a two-run shot to left that trimmed Huntsville?s lead to 6-5.

Stars relievers Roberto Giron and John Novinsky slammed the door, both authoring a scoreless inning. Giron fanned two in a one-two-three eighth, and Novinsky locked down his 10th save in 10 chances, striking out Jones in a perfect ninth. Saul Rivera (1-0) picked up the win, tossing 1 1/3 shutout frames, allowing two hits and one walk with no strikeouts. Gabe Ribas (0-2) suffered the loss, surrendering six runs on six hits, five walks and one hit batter while fanning two over 3 1/3 innings.

Stars lefty Ryan Costello (4-2, 4.45) meets Bears righty Clay Hensley (5-7, 4.78) in game three of the series Saturday on Pepsi, WZDX and Comcast Fielder?s Glove Night at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
