Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

The Indians were shut out, 3-0, in front of 8,072 at Victory Field Wednesday afternoon. Despite stranding twelve runners on base, a season high for Indians? opponents, the Bisons converted their second victory in Indianapolis and are 5-2 against the Indians in 2004.

Buffalo scored one run on a bases-loaded single by Ernie Young in the fifth inning, one run in the second on a wild pitch by Indians reliever Ben Ford, and one run in the ninth off of Jhonny Peralta?s home run down the left field line.

The Indians, who left nine runners on base during the contest, had a handful of chances to score but came up empty each time. The Indians loaded the bases in the second inning with no one out, but failed to drive a run across. In the ninth, the Tribe had runners on first and second with no one out, but pinch-hitter Alex Delgado grounded into a double play to end the scoring threat.

After the game, manager Cecil Cooper commented, "It?s been tough to score runs. We have not executed consistently. We?ve been in a downturn lately but we?ll pick it up. Today, we had a chance to score but didn?t capitalize."

Jeff Farnsworth, who had a rough outing in Buffalo, pitched reasonably well Wednesday, giving up one run on seven hits, walking two and fanning three in five innings.

Thursday, the Indians sent right-hander Pedro Liriano (3-6, 5.22 ERA) to the mound at 7 p.m. as the Indians conclude their four-game series with Buffalo at Victory Field.

Hey guys, sorry to be a pain and I realize I should have this memorized by now, but the audio link for Huntsville is the Indy audio feed. If it wouldn't be a problem, could someone please provide the link for Huntsville. Thanks for the help

No run support for Ryan Costello thus far; announcer Robert Portnoy has mentioned that MLB.com has asked to film Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks for a feature at the Futures Game; they'd like to mike and follow the two players as they take in all the All-Star Fan Fest activities in Houston...

Beloit Game Summary from the Burlington Site:

Burlington, Iowa ? Chris Coughlin tossed the very first nine?inning perfect game in the 83?year history of professional baseball in Burlington as the Bees (4?3, 26?51) beat the Beloit Snappers (2?5, 40?37) 3?0 tonight at Community Field. The only other perfect game in franchise history came on July 20, 1975, thrown by Abelino Pena in a 2?0 win in seven innings against Cedar Rapids. The last Midwest League perfect game was pitched by Clinton's Scott Dunn on August 3, 2000 against the Lansing Lugnuts in Clinton. Tonight's game was the Bees' second 2004 no?hitter as Dusty Hughes and Jake Mullis combined to make history against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on April 12th. There have now been 15 no?hitters in franchise history. Ironically, Coughlin and Mullis were teammates in college at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington last year and both graduated together last May.

The only threat to break up the perfection came in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Vinny Rottino hit a popup into shallow centerfield. Chris Lubanski, who was playing deep, came racing in and made a diving catch to rob him of a hit. Adam Heether sent Lubanski back to the warning track to haul one in on the very next play. Coughlin (2?1) struck out a career?high eleven in just his fifth professional start and got the final out on Josh Murray who bounced out to Mitch Maier, who celebrated his 22nd birthday today, at third base. Eleven strikeouts are the most in a single game by a Bees' pitcher this year.

Snappers' starter Dana Eveland (5?3) got help from his defense with three double plays and three runners caught stealing to hold the Bees scoreless through six himself. In the bottom of the seventh, Kenard Springer led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Donachie, and scored as he outraced the throw to the plate on a slow grounder to third off the bat of Walter Sevilla. The Bees added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Brandon Powell and a sacrifice fly by Maier.

The Bees have won consecutive games for the first time since sweeping a double?header at the Quad Cities on May 1st. Angel Sanchez had to leave the game in the top of the fifth inning after jamming his right hand into third base while stealing the bag in the bottom of the fourth.

The Bees and Snappers complete this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Kahi Kaanoi (1?1, 2.93) will start in place of Ambiorix Burgos who was scratched because of a blister. RH Greg Moreira (5?4, 4.85) will start for Beloit.

Helena hogged up all the runs tonight...

Helena Box Score:

Great night offensively -- baserunners everywhere -- the eight walks are as pretty as the 18 base hits; after 12 games, Adam Mannon is putting up MVP-type numbers, adding to his league-leading HR and RBI totals; only 11 team errors after 12 games -- that's unheard of in rookie ball, with the youth and field condition factors; other than Miguel Garcia's struggles, the pitching held up OK here...

Arizona Brewers Box Score:

David Krynzel taking advantage again of those rookie league catchers -- his foot must be feeling good; while some of the Arizona kids have struggled and others are holding their own, this team continues to be an incredible two-man show; first baseman Carlos Gallardo and second baseman Hernan Iribarren have combined to hit .508 (30-for-59) -- only six of the hits have been for extra bases (two HR's by Iribarren Wednesday), and only five combined walks thus far -- so these two are finding holes in the defense for singles like there's no tomorrow; one downside here, none of the Arizona batters drew a walk today. Not surprisingly, the Texas Rangers and Oakland A's entries, along with the Cubs, far outpace the other teams in this league in walks -- those clubs really do ingrain that OBP notion (and sign such players) right from the start...

Indianapolis Star Game Story:

Once again, Indians can't locate a run

Farnsworth's strong pitching effort, several scoring opportunities wasted in shutout loss

By Andrea Cohen

andrea.cohen@indystar.com

On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Indians won on a walk-off home run in the 12th inning.

On Wednesday, the clutch hitting just wasn't there.

One day after a two-run homer from Peter Bergeron produced what manager Cecil Cooper called "possibly the biggest win of the year," the Indians were shut out 3-0 by the Buffalo Bisons at Victory Field. Indianapolis stranded nine runners and squandered several situations with runners on base and no outs.

"We had the bases loaded (in the second inning) and a chance to get something and we didn't get anything," Cooper said. "Then again in the fifth we had guys on first and second with nobody out. That's really kind of the ball game. We pitched well enough to win, but the hits weren't there."

Indians starter Jeff Farnsworth (2-3) pitched his way out of two bases-loaded jams, giving up just one run in his five innings on the mound. That came in the fifth inning, when Ernie Young's bases-loaded single scored Grady Sizemore.

Farnsworth won his first start of the season but struggled while working on adjustments with his mechanics through the middle part of June. He was the pitcher of record in a nine-run loss June 14 and a 10-run loss June 19.

He won in his June 25 start, and Cooper said he was happy with Farnsworth's performance Wednesday.

"It's a work in progress," Farnsworth said. "Today I gave up some bloopers and guys were fouling a lot of pitches off, which I don't want to see. But it's getting better."

The seven-hit, one-run performance lowered Farnsworth's ERA by nearly a point, from 7.20 to 6.40.

Indians reliever Ben Ford gave up a run in the seventh, and the Bisons sealed the deal with Jhonny Peralta's solo home run in the ninth off Clint Weibl.

The Bisons' pitching was stingier, giving up just two hits in the last four innings.

Buffalo starter Kenny Rayborn (5-2) went six innings, allowing six hits. Cliff Bartosh and Fernando Cabrera each handled a hitless inning, and Scott Stewart finished with a one-hit ninth for his first save.

While he had hoped Tuesday night's dramatic win would give his team some momentum Wednesday, Cooper said the struggle to get clutch hits isn't new to the Indians.

"For the last 25 games or so, it's been tough for us to score runs," Cooper said. "Naturally, yesterday was a big lift and you think you're going to come out and hit the ball around. We had the chances. We just didn't capitalize."

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

On a bizarre play in the 10th inning, Huntsville lost a heartbreaker to the Bay Bears, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Joe Davis Stadium. After a five-game winning streak, the Stars (4-3, 35-31) have lost three straight to fall into a three-way tie for first in the Southern League West second-half standings. First-half champion Mobile (4-3, 44-33) joins the Stars and Birmingham atop the division.

The Stars? 10th-inning miscues spoiled a tremendous start by lefty Ryan Costello, who finished seven innings for the first time this season, equaling his season-high with seven strikeouts. Costello permitted just one run on four hits ? all but one were singles ? and two walks but got no decision.

With two down in the 10th and the score tied 1-1, Bears leadoff hitter Marcus Nettles doubled to right-center. On a 2-2 pitch from Paul Stewart, who was working on 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, Ronnie Merrill hit a chopper toward second, where Rickie Weeks fielded the ball to his right. Weeks? errant off-balance throw short-hopped in front of first baseman Prince Fielder before he reached the bag, and the ball glanced off Fielder?s glove. Nettles rounded third and headed home, and Fielder recovered the ball quickly but threw wildly, pulling catcher Kade Johnson way off the plate. Nettles? alertly circled behind Johnson and reached back to touch the plate, scoring the go-ahead run. Josh Barfield?s double to right scored Merrill for a 3-1 Bears lead.

Greg Sain?s run-scoring single put Mobile up 1-0 in the first, and Huntsville tied it by manufacturing a run in the seventh. Chris Barnwell led off with a single and Johnny Raburn laid down a sacrifice bunt. Bears starter Clay Hensley, who tossed seven strong innings of his own, elected to go to second, but Barnwell beat the throw. Kade Johnson sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Ozzie Chavez?s sacrifice fly scored Barnwell with the tying run.

R. D. Spiehs (4-0) picked up his fourth win in relief, fanning one and allowing one hit over 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Stewart (4-1) suffered a hard-luck loss, permitting two unearned runs on four hits and no walks with one strikeout over three innings. Brad Baker notched his 21st save, giving up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.

Stars righty Dennis Sarfate (4-7, 4.46) meets Bears right-hander Mike Thompson (4-0, 3.49) in game two of the series on a Thursday Thirsty presented by WTAK at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

NO BENCH A FACTOR IN LOSS

The Huntsville Stars will get a new position player tomorrow......... I don't know who it will be. A very reliable inside source didn't know either at the time, but this may have finally been precipitated by a situation in the 7th inning when manager Frank Kremblas had to send Jeff Housman to pinch-hit for Ryan Costello with two out and the go-ahead run on third....... This situation of being short-handed on the bench every day since Brandon Gemoll went up to Indianapolis just went on for one day too long, and it finally cost them......... After the game, pitching coach Fred Dabney and Kremblas were cursing like Marines, partly because of that and partly for a preliminary 10th inning scoring decision charging Paul Stewart with two earned runs on what were two poor plays in the decisive 10th by Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder.

To pick this all up, we go back to the bottom of the 7th........ Chris Barnwell led off against Mobile righty Craig Hensley and looped a 3-1 pitch straight to center, dropping in for a hit to break up a 2-for-22 slump. Two consecutive bunts on first pitches to Johnny Raburn and Kade Johnson resulted in runners on second and third......... Ozzie Chavez flew out on an 0-1 pitch to left-center, scoring Barnwell with the Stars' first and only run, but Frank did not want to bring Costello out for the 8th inning. He had already thrown 94 pitches, and pitched a fine ballgame (57 or 60.6% for strikes). He spotted his fastball well all night, but it was time to say good night........ However with a runner on third, the go-ahead run, who was there to go to? Your .146-hitting catcher or an outfielder with a strained hip flexor that was keeping him out of the line-up, that was preventing him from running, as well as handicapping him at the plate........ Earlier in the day, Ryan Knox tried to take a few swings in the cage and was so frustrated, he flipped the bat away in disgust....... All Frank had left was his pitchers, number one on the list, designated pitcher-pinchhitter, Housman......... In case you're wondering why he didn't send up his best hitting pitcher, Chris Saenz (.357 in 28 ABs w/2 doubles), he was charting pitches from his seat in Section I behind the plate....... So .250-hitting Housman was the no-choice choice........ Hensley struck him out on three pitches.

Paul Stewart came in and retired five of seven batters in the 8th and 9th....... A bunt hit by Marcus Nettles was erased by a double play in the 8th and a wild pitch on strike three put Ben Johnson on with two out in the 9th, but there was no damage there. Frank's decision to situate left fielder Brad Nelson in paid off, as left-handed hitting Kennard Jones hit an opposite-field pop fly that Nelson had to run in a few steps to make the play on. Had he been playing at normal depth, it would have been a sure hit......... But all that wouldn't matter in the end.

Stewart used all of three pitches to retire Nick Trzesniak and pinch-hitter Joe Gerber. Then Marcus Nettles, promoted from Class A-Lake Elsinore (Cal.) a week ago, doubled to right-center, probably the hardest hit ball of the night........ The count on the next hitter, Ronnie Merrill, was 3-2 when he hit a weak grounder in the hole near second base........ Rickie Weeks ran over several steps to his right to field the ball.......... Weeks had no time to get the speedy Nettles, but he had just enough time to get Merrill...... The ball wasn't hard hit, so Weeks, making an awkward off-balance throw across his body, rushed it to Fielder before he ever got to the bag. In a bargain, Prince had trouble picking the ball on the hop......... Drawing Fielder off the bag, Merrill was safe, but coming around third was Nettles........ Nettles had a head start with the ground ball hit behind him. Seeing Fielder could not take Weeks' poor throw cleanly, he was off to the races.......... Having trouble finding the handle on the ball right to the end, Prince finally rushed a slightly off-line throw to Kade Johnson, who's pulled away from the plate....... Kade dives behind him to make the tag on a sliding Nettles, but misses twice as Nettles avoids the tag and gets in the back door to break the 1-1 tie......... Kade threw to second to try and get Merrill on the throw to the plate, but was unsuccessful........ That also proved fateful, as Josh Barfield (whose father, 12-year American League veteran Jesse was in attendance tonight) doubled to right to score Merrill for the third and final run.

The original ruling was an error given to Fielder on the throw home........ From the scorer's point-of-view, Nettles scored on the throw, and couldn't assume the success of the tag, so the run was earned, as well as the subsequent run scored by Merrill on the double by Barfield........ That got Dabney hot........ The booth acquiesced and changed the error by Fielder to a fielding error, since Prince had trouble finding the handle on Weeks' throw (Weeks should have been given an error, but it was a tough play to make, and that was taken into account). That, by the scorer's logic, gave Stewart two unearned runs since the runs were the result of Fielder's fumbling........ That, at last report, is how this was reported when a new box was presumably sent back down to Dabney.

NOTE: The morning box shows the two 10th inning runs as earned, even with the error on Fielder -- MassBrew

The Stars had trouble with Hensley's breaking balls all night...... I believe every one of his strikeouts --- eight of them --- came on breaking balls. He did not look like a pitcher with a 5.45 ERA tonight. The movement on his pitches was from side-to-side and Barnwell and Johnson, particularly, had trouble picking it up...... Barney finally got lucky on a 12-6 curve and uppercut it on the right spot, dropping it in the right place leading to the run in the 7th........ Through six innings, the Stars had only hit six balls into the outfield --- none of them hard-hit. He gave up two hits through six --- one by Tony Gwynn Jr. in the 1st blooped to right and Fielder's in the 3rd which was short-hopped by Ben Johnson. Johnson tried to fake the fair catch, but the ump at first, Garrett Watson, wasn't buying.

The Bay Bears scored in the 1st inning on an 0-2 pitch to Dave Kingman-clone Greg Sain........ Sain's two-out hit threaded the hole on the left side of the infield, proceeding throught left-center to score Ronnie Merrill, who had doubled to left........ Costello, who went seven innings for the first time this year, fell behind numerous times on hitters, but retired nine straight at one point, was never hit hard after that, and allowed only one hitter to get to second base........ A fine game overall, but absolutely no run-support......... The Bay Bears are now 18-6 over their last 24 games, even though they are hitting .220 as a team in that period.

Thursday, Dennis Sarfate (4-7, 4.46) will face righty Mike Thompson (4-0, 3.49). Thompson has faced the Stars three times this season, holding them scoreless, but being hit for a .273 average. This will be his first start......... Sarfate has held Mobile to a .186 average in two starts, in which he's 1-1 with a buck fifty ERA.

The Southern League announced its rosters for the 2004 Southern League All-Star Game at Chattanooga's Bell South Park on July 13....... Brad Nelson was named to the team and will be joined in the outfield by D'Jaxx outfielders Aron Weston and Dwaine Bacon........ Prince Fielder was named to the All-Star squad as a replacement for D'Jaxx 1st baseman Micah Hoffpauir, who is rehabbing in Arizona........ Mobile pitcher R.D. Spiehs, who got the win, was named to the team to replace Birmingham's Arnie Munoz, who was promoted to Charlotte....... Other Mobile players named to the squad were closer Brad Baker, the runaway leader in saves, starter Chris Rojas, 2nd baseman Josh Barfield, and hit-or-miss slugger Greg Sain........ The entire list will be on my link in another day.

Helena Game Notes from the Independent Republic:

Helena hammers Missoula

By IR Staff

MISSOULA ? Make no mistake about it, the Helena Brewers love to play the Missoula Osprey. Helena (8-4) beat Missoula (3-9) for the sixth time in seven tries on the young season, this time a 14-8 victory Wednesday night.

The Brewers scored 12 of their 13 runs with two outs, including a string of seven in the second inning.

Adam Mannon had a home run in the inning, his fourth, and increased his Pioneer League-leading RBI total to 19.

Hasan Rasheed had four RBI for the Brewers, going 3-for-6 with a pair of doubles.

Starter Josh Wahpepah extended his streak of shutout innings to nine in the third inning of the game ? his entire professional career to that point ? before giving up a pair of earned runs.

Justin Barnes spelled Wahpepah to start the fourth inning. Barnes earned the win for his 4 1/3 innings' work, striking out six.

Missoula refused to buckle, though, adding five runs in the bottom of the eighth to trail 13-8, sparked by Derek Bruce's bases-clearing double.

Helena is at Missoula again tonight at 7:05.

Helena Game Story from the Missoulian:

Brewers bash Osprey. 14-8

Helena bats overshadow Brito's four hits

By KIM BRIGGEMAN of the Missoulian

Change is in the wind for the Missoula Osprey.

"We're going to have to do something," manager Jim Presley said after Helena batted .400 and walked eight times Wednesday night in a 14-8 win over the O's in Play Ball Park.

The Brewers ran their record to 6-1 against Missoula in the young Pioneer League season. They racked up 18 hits, four by first baseman Grant Richardson and three more by Hasan Rasheed, who drove in four runs from the leadoff position.

Twelve of Helena's runs came with two outs, including all seven in a seam-ripping second inning against starter Derik Nippert.

Nippert, 0-3 after three starts, left in the second frame only to have Adam Mannon greet reliever Hipolito Guerrero with a two-run home run to put the Brewers up 8-0.

"If we can just hold 'em to four or five (runs), we're OK," said Presley, glancing up at the towering scoreboard that flashed eight runs and 11 hits for the Osprey. "We'll start building guys up" to start shaking up the starting rotation.

In less than 12 innings of his three starts, Nippert has been touched for 30 hits and 20 earned runs. None of the four pitchers that followed him escaped unscathed, although the two runs Kosuke Yonezawa gave up in two innings of work were both unearned due to a two-out error by shortstop Derek Bruce.

Helena's power surge was led by Mannon, who has 16 of his league-leading 19 RBIs against the Osprey. He added a double off the left field wall to his home run over roughly the same area. It was Mannon's fourth home run and second in as many nights after going yard against Great Falls on Tuesday.

The Brewers smacked six doubles, two by Rasheed.

Amid all that Helena offense, however, were a couple of encouraging signs for Missoula.

First baseman Javier Brito, hitting .147 when Helena left town after six straight games last Saturday, had the first 4-for-4 night of his career. One of those hits was a solo home run, the second by an Osprey in their new ballpark.

Brito, the O's backup first baseman last season, has gone 8-for-11 in his last three games to raise his batting average to .289.

The 6-3, 220-pound Brito comes from Venezuela and doesn't have a firm grasp on English yet. But he showed what's gotten into his swing - moving his feet closer together to help him cover more of the plate.

The home run, he said, was a fastball from Helena reliever Justin Barnes, the first off the converted third baseman this season.

The location? Brito smiled and held his hand chest high.

Catcher Richard Mercado threw an instant jolt into a crowd of 2,140 when he entered the game in the seventh. The Arizona Diamondbacks' 12th-round draft pick three weeks ago, Mercado signed on after leading the Arizona Wildcats to an improbable berth in the College World Series.

He arrived in Missoula earlier Wednesday and replaced catcher Wilkin Castillo in the seventh inning.

In his first professional at-bat, the right-hander stung a couple of foul balls into the windy night down the right-field line. Then he lined a 1-and-2 pitch from Barnes to the deep recesses of right-center for a stand-up triple (though he slid just to make sure).

Mercado picked up his first RBI an inning later on a single up the middle.

"Everybody's going to want to showcase their abilities right here and I just wanted to come out and be aggressive," said Mercado, who played his high school ball at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif. - the same school that produced ex-Osprey shortstop Sergio Santos, the Diamondbacks' No. 1 draft choice two years ago.

"I was glad to see him get that first base hit," Presley said. "He's a player."

Notes from the nest:

The short two-game series between Helena and Missoula concludes Thursday night with a battle of lefties. Shane Dove, 1-1, goes for Missoula against the Brewers' Ed Walker. Walker came out on top of a 6-2 decision when the two faced off last Friday in the O's opener in Play Ball Park.

Catcher Richard Mercado, who joined the Osprey on Wednesday after signing a contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, batted .342 for the Arizona Wildcats this season. Mercado's star at Arizona rose this season after he played backup in his first two years. Baseball America said a "tireless work ethic" earned Mercado the starting spot at catcher. "Pitchers preferred throwing to him, and he threw out 13 of 30 base stealers with just an average arm," according to Baseball America.

Mercado is the second-highest draft pick on the Osprey roster. Pitcher Steven Jackson was taken in the 10th round out of Clemson.

For those new at following the lower levels of the minor leagues a couple of tidbits.

1) It's OK to get excited about rookie ball hitters.

2) Don't count on rookie ball hitters especially college players, both Arizona and the Pioneer league are offensive leagues.

3) Get excited about pitchers with high strike totals and atleast manageable walk totals.

That means you've got to like what Barnes is dealing down there.

I agree Igor, but there is some serious mashing being done by some of these more experienced Helena hitters. If they can earn their way to Beloit it would seem to be good news for the full season teams. There seems to be room for more position players up and down the full season teams.

Good call on Barnes. Great K:BB, 17:0 in 11.2 IP. So far so good on his conversion back to the mound.

As MB has noted, it's great to see Adam Mannon hitting so well, especially since he struggled a little bit last year, both in our system and at Chandler-Gilbert CC.

I'm also happy to see Rasheed back in the leadoff spot after Fermaint was used there for a couple of games. It's hard not to have Rasheed's speed at the top of the order, and so far, he has seemed to have picked up where he left off at Lake City CC.

And all of the Helena batters seem to be doing a good job drawing walks, even more "raw" players like Fermaint, Mannon & Rasheed. Anthony Festa might become a new favorite of Toby's a la Tommy Carrow & Drew Anderson the way he's drawing free passes.

Speaking of walks, it's great to see that Brad Nelson keeps on drawing walks. Is Tony Gwynn Jr. swinging for the fences more than he should be? A guy with 11 extra base hits shouldn't have as many Ks as he does, especially for a guy that prides himself on making contact.

Huntsville Times Game Story:

Stars' latest loss extra painful

Error in 10th leads to 3-1 defeat against visiting BayBears

By PAUL GATTIS

Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com

The words from Huntsville Stars manager Frank Kremblas came with a machete-like sharpness Wednesday night, through clenched teeth and dripping with irritation.

Tough way to lose a game, Frank?

"Yep," was Kremblas' razor-blade response.

Indeed, it was a tough way to lose a game - a botched infield grounder with two outs that led to Mobile's 3-1 victory in 10 innings before an announced crowd of 713 at Joe Davis Stadium.

"But when you don't make the plays at crunch time, it's tough to win games," Kremblas continued.

With two outs and nobody on in the top of the 10th, BayBears leadoff hitter Marcus Nettles doubled. It appeared harmless, though, when Ronnie Merrill followed with a looping liner to Stars second baseman Rickie Weeks.

Appeared harmless, perhaps, but it wasn't.

The looping liner seemed to freeze Weeks as he played the bounce. Then he hurriedly made an off-balance throw to first baseman Prince Fielder. The throw was in the dirt and bounced away from Fielder as he tried to find the base with his foot.

Meanwhile, Nettles rounded third base. Fielder recovered to throw home, but Nettles made an acrobatic slide to elude the tag of catcher Kade Johnson.

Then Josh Barfield followed with a long double to right off losing pitcher Paul Stewart (4-1) that scored Merrill.

"He was bearing down on first base," Weeks said in verbally replaying Merrill's grounder. "It was a bad throw. That was it."

Still, it was one of those funny-looking plays that makes you wonder if you really saw what you thought you saw.

"It was a tough play," Kremblas said. "It was weird coming off the bat. I think (Weeks) thought he had less time than he had."

That one play, though, only seemed to magnify bigger problems for the Stars.

Against Mobile starter Clay Hensley - who entered the game with an unsightly 5.45 ERA - the Stars could get only three hits and one run in his seven innings of work.

And even that run was so quiet you would've thought that someone punched the mute button.

In the seventh, Chris Barnwell bounced a single up the middle. He beat the throw to second on a sacrifice bunt by Johnny Raburn, moved to third on a bunt by Johnson and scored on a fly ball by Ozzie Chavez.

For the game, the Stars had only five hits and struck out 11 times.

"We've got to hit the ball better," Kremblas said. "We're not hitting worth a crap. If we don't start hitting the ball better, we're not going to win any games."

The Stars came into the game tied with Mobile with a .237 team batting average - the lowest in the Southern League. But the Stars' 296 runs scored this season is by far the fewest in the league.

Wednesday's termite-infested bat rack wiped out a gem of a performance by starter Ryan Costello. He allowed a run on four hits in seven innings and Stewart was that one ground ball away from completing his third scoreless inning of work.

"The pitching's been great," said Kremblas, veiling another indictment of his offense.

And remember that season-best five-game winning streak from last week? It's now digressed into a three-game losing streak.

"We're not really worried about it," Fielder said. "We're just trying to play baseball. We've just got to play hard."

Fielder added to All-Star team: Fielder became the second Star on the Southern League All-Star team Wednesday. He was named as a replacement player after the initial roster was announced Tuesday.

He joins left fielder Brad Nelson, who was voted to the team.
