It's been a while since we posted the High Desert game notes in full:

TODAY: The Mavericks make their final visit to The Epicenter of the season and open a four-game set at the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (Angels). These teams met to start the second half at Rancho Cucamonga with the Quakes capturing two out of three games. The Quakes lead the season series 11-7 and have won six of the ten meetings here. The Mavs offense has struggled against the Quakes this year, in 18 games High Desert is batting just .235, but have posted a 4.72 ERA.

LAST NIGHT: The Quakes erupted for ten runs and 14 hits, disappointing the High Desert overflow crowd of 5, 804 and beat the Mavericks 10-6. Ransel Melgarejo homered, had three hits and drove in four for the Quakes, plus Jared Abruzzo went deep and knocked in a pair as Daniel Davidson earned the win. Bo Hall suffered the loss for the Mavs, giving up seven runs in four and a third innings and fell to 1-5 at home. Jeremy Frost homered and drove in two, but the Mavs have dropped four of their last five.

START ME UP: The Mavericks are in their 14th season in the California League and the fourth as the high A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. It has been a successful run in the desert for the Mavs, capturing three Cal League championships (1991, 1993 and 1997), plus have qualified for the playoffs seven times.

SPEED DEMONS: High Desert did not steal a base last time out, and have fallen into third in the California League in stolen bases with 89 steals, San Jose is second at 90 and Rancho Cucamonga leads the league with 96. The Mavericks have led the league or have shared the lead all but six days this season. Chris Morris is second in the league with 24 steals, despite playing in only 37 games because of injuries. Kennard Bibbs is tied for third with 22 and Callix Crabbe is sixth with 21. The running game has taken a hit lately, with Morris on the disabled list after hernia surgery, last season Morris led the Cal League with 67 steals which also lead the Brewers organization. Bibbs missed 12 games with a hamstring injury, plus Jeff Eure, who had 29 steals in Beloit last season has been out since mid-May with a broken hamate bone.

FOR STARTERS: The Mavs pitching staff is rounding into form, especially the starting rotation of Khalid Ballouli, David Bradley, Bo Hall, Jesse Harper and Manny Parra. Since June 10, the starter has managed to pitch six innings or more 11 times for the Mavericks, including a complete game five-hit shutout for Parra against San Jose June 19. Over the last 20 games, the starters have posted a 3.82 ERA collectively over 110 2/3 innings and have given up 47 earned runs and fanned 113.

ON DECK: After this series against the Quakes, the Mavericks return home next weekend to host the Lake Elsinore Strom for three games starting Friday night and another Napa Auto Parts Family Feast Night as all sodas and hot dogs will be just one dollar. Then Saturday night, there is another fireworks show after the ballgame and then Sunday is an afternoon delight at 3:05 PM (5:05 Central).

Few details available on the Indy game from their press release:

Nothing much else available from Syracuse on this decidedly non-descript game...

Jorge Sequea and Glenn Williams homered to lead the Syracuse SkyChiefs to a 6-1 win over the Indianapolis Indians in the International League Monday.

Sequea's three-run shot in the second opened a four-run lead for Syracuse.

Williams added an insurance run with a solo home run in the eighth. Guillermo Quiroz followed with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Simon Pond for the last SkyChiefs run.

Carlos Delgado completed his rehab with Syracuse and will rejoin the Toronto Blue Jays against the Seattle Mariners today. Delgado had a pair of singles Monday.

Matt Erickson scored the Indians' only run. Erickson doubled and scored on Steve Scarborough's double.

Syracuse starter Cameron Reimers, who was recently promoted from Double-A New Haven, got the win, allowing one run on five hits in seven innings.

"I was excited to come back," Reimers said in a release from the Indians. "I didn't have any butterflies and just got into a good rhythm."

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

WEEKS BREAKS CLUB HBP RECORD

The Montgomery Biscuits would probably admit to getting more out of Matt Parker tonight than they probably expected.

But to me, this wasn't much of a surprise.

When he was with the Stars, he was handed a spot start now and then...... In 2002, he did well in all three he was given, holding opponents to a 1.38 ERA. Perhaps his finest was his first start the next season, when he held the Barons to just one hit in five scoreless innings, but overall, it's been a mediocre 3-2, 4.15 in eight starts for the Stars........ He had gone six innings in only one of them.

Still, it was quite an achievement for the former Huntsville Star Monday, who was released by the Cardinals after going 2-2 with a 5.05 ERA in 25 appearances, including one start........ The Doughboys backed Parker up early, getting all the runs he would need by the 4th inning.

In the 3rd, Ryan Costello (4-2, 4.45 and not 3-2 like I saw on the error-drenched sportsnetwork.com) had a runner on first and two out when Jace Brewer, who started the Biscuits 2nd inning rally, singled up the middle on the first pitch, advancing Vince Harrison, making his debut tonight for Montgomery. Just as a train blew beyond the outfield at Riverwalk Stadium, Brian Martin hit a 2-2 pitch deep over the head of Tony Gwynn, driving in both runners, Brewer scoring without a throw........ Montgomery took a 4-0 lead into the top of the 4th.

The Stars answered back with a run on a sacrifice fly by Johnny Raburn to score Brad Nelson. Raburn has six sac flies this season, three of them coming in the last four games. He drove in the tying run and go-ahead run with two of them........ It's still a long way to Jason Wood's season record of 15, set in 1994.

In the 7th, the Stars got as close as they would ever get in this game. With Carlos Hines (2-2, 4.91) in relief of Parker, Chris Barnwell fouled off pitch after pitch before forcing a walk...... Raburn bunted over to the third base side for a hit, giving the Stars two baserunners. Raburn has started 29 of the last 32 games for the Stars, hitting .292......... Hines beat Ozzie Chavez on a head-first play at first, which I understand will get you fined from the manager for some reason, but it moved the runners over on a grounder to the right side........ Hines then hit Kade Johnson on the hand and Rickie Weeks in succession, forcing in Barnwell to make it 5-2....... Upon being plunked with a 3-1 fastball, Weeks broke the Stars season record for most times hit by a pitch in a season, passing the old record of 19 held by Ramon Hernandez since 1998........ A fly ball by Gwynn scored Raburn to complete the scoring....... There were four sacrifice flies in this game, an unusally high number for a single game. The record for a Stars game is 6 in a game against Memphis on July 16, 1991.

If anyone missed this game on the radio, they missed a real treat....... Ryan Knox was in the broadcast booth for the entire game with Robert Portnoy, exchanging insights about the game, his opponents, and his teammates. One centered around a comparision between Tony Gwynn, Jr. and Dave Krynzel, our centerfielder of this year and last. While Krynzel covered the outfield better side-to-side, Knox says, Gwynn is a better outfielder going back to either gap, but weak in coming in, something Knox related, that his father agreed with in a conversation with him.........Ryan is very knowledgable about his sport and carries on a terrific conversation and would make a damn good color man, if anyone chose to take him on....... Knox is coming back from a strained hip flexor, says he's 90-95%, feels good, and may be ready to return to action when the Stars come home Thursday to play Mobile.

The Cincinnati Reds released Dionys Cesar, who was at Triple-A with Louisville, where he was hitting just .185 with six RBI in 18 games....... For the early part of the Southern League season, he was the league's batting leader, and was hitting .297 for Chattanooga when he was promoted......... The Stars have been hit 53 times by pitches this year, putting them on pace for 90 for the season, one shy of the league record by the 1999 Diamond Jaxx team in 141 games.

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Mavericks squeeze by Quakes

Ballouli pitches six strong innings; Farnsworth, Villanueva homer

By TIM HARAN/Staff Writer

RANCHO CUCAMONGA ? The stage wasn't set for a pitchers' duel, considering the two starters so far this season had combined to allow 123 earned runs and 28 homers.

But the High Desert Mavericks' Khalid Ballouli gave up just one run ? unearned ? in six innings on Monday, bettering his counterpart Phil Wilson, and leading the Mavericks to a 3-1 victory over Rancho Cucamonga at The Epicenter.

"He kept the ball down the whole time," High Desert pitching coach John Curtis said. "His fastball was down and his slider is coming back. He's making some good pitches."

After a stretch earlier this year in which Ballouli went 0-5 with a 14.95 ERA, the pitcher has delivered three straight quality starts.

"I'm definitely out of that rut," Ballouli said. "I've had three or four comfortable outings where I've put the ball where I've wanted it. I'm feeling a lot more confident on the mound."

"I think there was a slight mechanical (problem), dropping his arm a little bit," Curtis said of Ballouli's struggles earlier this season. "Who knows, it could have been a little shoulder fatigue or whatever. He's back up there now."

The Mavs dug themselves a hole early on Monday after committing two errors in the first resulting in Rancho Cucamonga's only run of the night. But Ballouli retired the next eight Quakes batters before Michael Napoli knocked a single up the middle in the fourth inning.

The Mavs squared the score in the third after Mario Mendez led off the frame with a double to left. Troy Farnsworth singled up the middle, his first hit in his last 16 at-bats, to drive in Mendez.

The last time Ballouli pitched, he left the game with the Mavs leading 5-1 against Inland Empire before High Desert collapsed in the ninth, allowing seven runs.

But the right-hander isn't hesitant to leave the ball for his bullpen.

"I'm glad to hand the ball off," he said. "Just like I went through a tough time and they backed me.... It got a little scary tonight, but Reggie shut the door."

High Desert reliever Nick Slack allowed one hit in two innings, while making two spectacular defensive plays. Reggie Rivard pitched a no-hit ninth, though he did walk two batters. The lead remained safe after the Mavs turned a key double play and Rivard forced B.J. Weed to groundout to third.

"We got some big double plays," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "They're all big, but when you have a lead in the ninth and they've got the tying run at the plate, when you can get a double play, you get two outs and nobody on. That helps."

Entering the eighth inning with the game tied, High Desert secured its victory with a pair of solo home runs. Farnsworth smacked a two-out go-ahead homer to straightaway center off Quakes' reliever James Carroll. To lead off the ninth, Mavs' catcher Froilan Villanueva crushed a shot over the left field wall off Rich Thompson.

Beloit Game Summary from the Beloit Site:

The M.O. of Silver Hawks manager Tony Perezchica coming into this season has been to play small ball whenever possible. Included in playing small ball is using the hit-and-run, bunting and stealing. Monday, in front of 8,110 fans, the largest to see a game at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium, the South Bend Silver Hawks stole a game from the Beloit Snappers with a 2-1 win.

The Hawks placed a run on the board in the second inning. Alex Frazier started the inning by snapping a two-game hitless streak, with a double into the left center field alley. Frazier moved to third on an Edgar Varela ground out and scored when Allen Mottram grounded out to shortstop. The following inning, the Hawks pushed out to a two run lead.

With an out in the third, Emilio Bonifacio reached on a bunt single and continued to second on a throwing error by Snappers backstop Carlos Corporan. Bonifacio continued his journey around the bases when Beloit starting hurler Brian Montalbo (5-3) uncorked a wild pitch. Bonifacio scored when Miguel Montero struck out, but advanced to first on Montalbo?s wild pitch. Bonifacio made a heads up play by delaying his start for the plate and scored when Corporan threw the ball to first. The return throw from first baseman Vinny Rottino was late.

Alex Cremidan came out of the Hawks pen to capture the save (8), helping starter Danny Muegge improve to 5-3 on the season. The win snapped a two game losing streak for the Silver Hawks.

The Monday night crowd at The Cove is the second consecutive Monday night crowd of 8,000 plus. The previous all-time high attendance at The Cove was last Monday, when 8,072 gathered for a Hawks loss to the West Michigan Whitecaps. The Silver Hawks and Beloit Snappers (Milwaukee Brewers) play the third of their four game series Tuesday night at The Cove.

Helena Game Story from the Billings Gazette:

Brewers tame Mustangs

By FRITZ NEIGHBOR

They started out with substitute umpires, and the Billings Mustangs ended up feeling blue Monday, falling behind 7-0 to the Helena Brewers before the visitors held on for an 8-5 Pioneer League win.

The game, played before 2,025 fans on a cool evening at Cobb Field, started 19 minutes late because the scheduled umpires, Shanna Kook and Mike Jarboe, were late getting down from Great Falls. Local American Legion umps Daryn Fredrickson and Larry Tangsrud called the first two innings, after which the game was tied 0-0.

Then Kook and Jarboe took over, and coincidentally, things went south for the Ponies. First starter Greg Goetz (0-2) sandwiched two walks around a sharp base hit by Alcides Escobar. Then the right-hander fielded a chopper hit toward first by Helena's Tony Festa. Goetz appeared to tag Festa, but Jarboe ruled him safe.

Billings manager Luis Aguayo argued, and the crowd, needless to say, piled on. Carlos De La Cruz scored on the play ? the only earned run of five the Brewers scored in the third. First baseman Grant Richardson followed with a sacrifice fly to score Escobar, and Alberto Segura added a base hit to score Steve Sollman, who'd walked. Aguayo brought in David Griffin to quell things, but Jake Serfass and Charlie Fermaint greeted him with RBI singles for a 5-0 lead.

"One bad call, and we lost our concentration after that," Aguayo said after his team fell to 8-8, 2.5 games behind the Northern Division-leading Brewers (11-6). "We hung a couple pitches, and that play took everybody out of the game right there. They basically scored three more runs than they should have, and that put the game away."

Festa, who played third, and Richardson each had RBI singles in the fourth to make it 7-0. Billings fought back with three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth, but Brewers' reliever Justin Wilson threw three innings of one-hit ball to close out the win.

"We could've put a couple hits together at key times and got a couple more runs," Aguayo said. "The kids battled back, but we found that last guy (Wilson) ? you know, he threw the ball very well. He changed speeds, and did a good job. Their pitching did an excellent job on holding us."

Helena, meanwhile, got hits at the right time, including doubles from Hasan Rasheed and Sollman for an insurance run in the eighth.

Not to mention three hits to extend that third inning. "Anything could go either way," said Mustangs center fielder Travis Kaats, who had RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings. "They were hitting the ball. It (the no tag) kind of hurt us in that sense, because it could've been the third out.

"Close game, too. Attitudes change a little bit after that."

Bradley Key started Billings' three-run fourth with a double, and moved up when Festa fielded Trevor Lawhorn's grounder to third, and while trying to keep his throw out of the sun, bounced it past Richardson at first. Key scored on a wild pitch; Lawhorn came in on Bobby Mosby's groundout. Tonys Gutierrez walked with two out in the inning and came in on back-to-back singles from Tiago Campos and Kaats.

Helena brought in 6-foot-5 Josh Wahpepah to pitch, and he ended up with the win, though he gave up two runs in 2 2/3 innings. Helena was helped by solid defense from Festa and Richardson: Festa made a nice stop on Key's smash to start the ninth, and threw him out; Richardson reached into the Mustang dugout to snare a foul ball by Campos to end the seventh.

The teams have a rematch tonight at 7.

A little "Link Report Extra" from the Helena Independent Republic:

Look out for the long ball

By Jason Mohr - IR Staff Writer

Years ago, hitters aimed for a target painted on the back of Helena's Richard Van Nice's Books. The front door sits on Lyndale Avenue, or just beyond the left field wall of Kindrick Legion Field.

The bulls-eye has since been painted over, but store operator Van Nice has a few balls stashed on his counter.

"I've lost a couple of windows to them," he said, grabbing them. "I've got a few here that occassionally I have somebody pitch back over the fence."

A home run often gets Helena Brewers fans on their feet and cheering.

But for businesses beyond the left field wall, the long ball means smashed windows, dented cars and dinged up buildings.

Because many of the homers are hit during batting practice, some are worried that kids playing at Memorial Park could be unintended targets, according to JC Weingartner. During games, he said, homers have sent a pack of kids scurrying into Lyndale Avenue after a souvenier ball.

One day last year, 23 balls thumped the offices at 210 E. Lyndale Ave., said Weingartner, an attorney for owner Mike Marlow.

Some balls hit the building on the fly, others bounced onto the premises. Employees there collected a boxful of more than 50.

David Simonson said he's learned to listen for the crack of a bat and look out the window to estimate where the ball might land.

"It can vary every night," the industrial hygienist said. "Last year, some nights anywhere from half a dozen to a dozen (were) coming over."

The fence at city-owned Kindrick Legion Field sits 335 feet from home plate in left field, 325 feet in right and 400 feet in dead center. The power alleys, where hitters are most likely to send one over the fence, are about to 375 feet.

It would take quite a smash to make it into the Memorial Park playground, which sits just right of center and over a road. Foul balls also spray the area.

Balls aren't hit out only during games; many of the dingers leave the park during midday batting practice. Since most batters are right-handers, most balls sail over the left field fence.

City Parks and Recreation Department Director Randy Lilje said this is the first time he's received complaints. Some refused to be identified for this story because they feared contract work with the city would be put in jeopardy.

Lilje said he's trying to see if there is a problem with balls landing in Memorial Park, although there haven't been any official complaints.

But the park pre-dates the Lyndale Avenue businesses beyond the left field wall, Lilje said. The grandstand was built in 1947, years after the field was in use.

Businesses have created a problem for themselves by creating more parking in the rear of their buildings, he said.

"I don't know what happened 21 years ago before I came...(but) we never got any complaints," Lilje said. "We really don't have any money to do anything major. We don't have any quick solutions for the (businesses) at this point in time."

For now, "Park At Your Own Risk" signs have been recently tacked up outside the ballpark.

"That's just to alert them that there could be balls flying over the fence," Lilje said.

Solutions are being talked about, though, like doubling the size of the outfield wall to 24 feet, hanging a net, installing fences or nets in front of businesses, or planting trees along the outside wall, according to Brewers General Manager Paul Fetz.

He said he hasn't run into problems with balls peppering neighborhoods during previous stints in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Medicine Hat, Alberta. But having a lot of liability claims could negatively affect insurance coverage, he said.

And the fly balls don't bug everybody.

Michelle Pyzyna said she doesn't want to see kids chasing balls in busy streets, but isn't too concerned.

"In all honesty, I live in front of a baseball field," said Pyzyna, who lives on Lyndale Avenue. "Hey, balls are going to come over the fence. I don't have a problem with it."

Photo by Jon Ebelt IR Staff - Richard Van Nice holds no animosity to the local baseball teams, but acknowledges there is a problem with balls being hit over the outfield wall at Kindrick Legion Field and damaging property.
