June Transactions: Jones DL'd, 2 Newcomers, Candy Man

Here's the link to the Spring Transactions thread should you need to review:

And to the April / May thread:

To kick off the June thread, it appears that both OF/1B/DH Brandon Gemoll and RHP Paul Stewart have been returned to Huntsville after brief stays at Indianapolis.

This, according to the roster pages of the two teams' sites, with those roster pages both directly fed off of the SportsNetwork site.

As promised, I'll lose my signature now...

Those sites are wrong. There have been no player moves yet this week involving either Gemoll or Stewart. Not saying that it won't happen, but as of right now, it hasn't.

Thanks, brewcru1. You have to remember, Sports Network also told us that 39-year-old Jose Rijo had signed with the Crew and been assigned to Huntsville. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif

As for now, Sports Network has Brandon Gemoll back at Indy, but Paul Stewart in Huntsville. We'll see...

Brewerfan has learned that 22-year-old RHP Kenny Durost, the 28th round 2003 pick out of Lubbock Christian University, has chosen to retire. Surprising, only in that his 2004 numbers have been very good and he's been a key member of the Snappers' staff. As with any personal decision such as this, we're in absolutely no position to speculate on the circumstances, nor should we. We wish Kenny a bright future outside of baseball.

On the retirement front, Baseball America has listed a "released" transaction for RHP Tony Stavros. Earlier this spring, Stavros had been listed as voluntarily retired. Probably some type of paper transaction for the undrafted free agent who had shown some promise with outstanding secondary numbers. Just mentioning it in case others on the board saw the line at BA.

The timing of his announcement is very intriguing to say the least. He is coming off of two consecutive solid outings and makes the announcement the day after pitching in a game. You would think if his heart wasn't in in, he wouldn't have bothered going to the mound. This has all the smell of a personal matter. Obviously, we have to respect that, but it is unfortunate for him and the organization.

Two 2003 draft picks are set to join the Beloit Snappers in Dayton on Saturday. Each has been in extended spring training to this point...

17th round RHP Tommy Hawk, not quite yet 19 1/2 years old, led the Arizona League in ERA at 2.31 in 46.2 IP last summer.

Infielder Will Lewis will be 23 in August. He was the Brewers' 32nd round pick out of Texas Christian University. Lewis appeared in one game for Helena last summer, was injured (leg if I remember correctly), and returned to drive in 19 runs in only 99 AB's with the Arizona Rookie club.

Congrats to both.

Just speculation on my part, but Hawk would likely fill Kenny Durost's spot on the staff, and we'll have to see if infielder Guilder Rodriguez, inactive the past couple of days, is OK. Snapper management usually is on top of things on their transaction page, which we'll monitor this weekend.

Will Lewis is probably one of the more obscure Brewer prospect names for you readers of the minor league board. We posted this link right after he signed last June; worth re-posting today...

And while we've posted several on-the-field updates on Tommy Hawk over the past year, a favorite Hawk thread is still hanging around the Draft Forum these days:

Got word today that Guilder isn't in the doghouse but is sick. I actually believe this one as he was walking towards the bullpen and looked like he could throwup at any moment. Very different from the normal Guilder who always has a smile on his face.

From Mark McCarter at the Huntsville Times:

Stars catcher Kade Johnson and pitcher Tim Bausher have both been placed on waivers - but may well be lost to the Huntsville club for only a brief time.

Johnson and Bausher were both on Milwaukee's 40-man major league roster. The Brewers have removed them from that roster, clearing space for two new players.

Other teams may claim them within 72 hours, but must then place them on a 40-man major league roster.

If they clear waivers - Bausher's waiver period ends Sunday and Johnson's on Monday - they will remain with the Milwaukee organization and in Huntsville.

Catcher Nestor Corredor is to join the Stars, who started Friday's game with only nine available position players, in time for Saturday's game. He has been at Milwaukee's extended spring training camp in Arizona.

From MassBrew:

This is Corredor's stateside pro debut. The Venezuelan youngster just turned 20 years old last week. In two seasons with the Dominican Summer League Brewers, the kid hit .211 in 360 AB's. The Brewers must see something in his young 6'1", 180 lb. frame that has them including him in the crop of players they brought to Arizona from their now-disbanded Latin summer teams. This likely will be a cup of coffee visit with the team, it would seem.

David Weiser reports from Huntsville that:

Ryan Knox will return from Indianapolis and will be available for tonight's game. On one other note, Tim Bausher has been picked up on waivers by the Colorado Rockies. Reggie Rivard will get a spot start tonight in place of Bausher. Kade Johnson has until Wednesday at noon to clear waivers, according to the best information I've got.

RHP Matt Childers and C/3B Chris Coste have been activated from the Indianapolis disabled list.

Nice to see Childers' groin strain was very mild, and Coste's bat has been much missed, so both are welcome additions.

With these moves, the Indy active roster is at the limit of 23.

Still on the AAA disabled list are SS J.J. Hardy, CF David Krynzel, RHP Brian Bowles, and LHP Jorge de la Rosa (wasn't he supposed to be back by now after what was to be only a week's stay with shoulder tendinitis?)

From 05/26/2004:

Quote:
"It's nothing real major, just a precautionary move," Brewers farm director Reid Nichols said of De La Rosa. "It had been bothering him his last couple starts and we didn't want to be short of pitching in the next few days."

Right, Reid... I believe you (wink wink).

Huntsville RHP Mike Jones activated from the Stars' DL. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

If Kade Johnson clears waivers, young fill-in catcher Nestor Corredor would be the choice, you'd think, to free up a needed roster spot.

Aren't Gemoll and Stewart still with Indy? They aren't shown on the Brewerfan Indy roster. Also Farnsworth isn't shown.

If those 3 are still in Indy, then the roster would appear to be at 24.

Also, did we ever hear what was wrong with Miller and what his timeframe is?
