Update, in progress: Greenville (Braves) 4, Huntsville 0, Braves still batting, bottom of the eighth

Chris Saenz allowed to pitch into the eighth, allowed one run in that frame, responsible for another that eventually scored; Chris allowed a solo HR earlier; the Stars, as hardytheman noted above, stifled at the plate...

Huntsville loses 4-0....Saenz goes 7.1 gives up 4 ER...K's 8........Huntsville gets 3 hits, one from saenz, one from prince, and i forget the other... rickie with another 0-fer, and same with nelson. This slump with fielder and weeks is starting to look a little bit serious, or is that just me worrying?

Final: Buffalo (Indians) 7, Indianapolis 0

It's even worse than it appears, as a kid lefty from high-A ball was called up to make a one-time rotation appearance for the Bisons; obviously he shut the AAA Indy squad down...

SportsNetwork appears to be having issues tonight -- box scores and game logs will be delayed; wow -- 9:30 Central and all the available audio for the evening is complete.

Beloit Game Summary from the Burlington Site:

Burlington, IA ? Simon Beresford and Mitch Stetter limited the Burlington Bees (2?3, 24?51) to just two hits as the Beloit Snappers (2?3, 40?35) opened this series with a 2?0 win over the Bees at Community Field tonight. The Bees have been shutout eleven times now on the year.

Beresford pitched five innings and allowed two hits, both singles by Kenard Springer, and two walks while striking out five. Stetter finished the final four innings without allowing a baserunner and struck out six for his third save.

The Snappers got both of their runs in the top of the third inning against Bees' starter John Gragg (2?7). Carlos Corporan led off with a triple and scored on a double by Josh Murray. Terry Trofholz followed with a single up the middle to chase Murray home with the second run. Gragg worked through 6.2 innings and allowed four hits and three walks while striking out a season?high eight. Gragg has now lost six consecutive decisions, tying Ambiorix Burgos and Chris Goodman for the longest losing streak by a Bees pitcher this season. Robbie McClellan finished the final 2.1 innings and allowed one hit and one walk while striking out two.

This series continues tomorrow night at 7:00 on a Hawkeye 2?for?Tuesday at Community Field. RH Chris Goodman (2?7, 5.74) will start for the Bees against RH Brian Montalbo (5?3, 4.84) for the Snappers.

And in the Stars' shutout loss, they were goose-egged by a pitcher making his first start of the year after 18 less than mediocre relief appearances (5.64 ERA, 41 hits allowed in 30.1 IP).

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

In the Stars? final regular season game at Municipal Stadium, a pair of Braves pitchers engineered an efficient three-hit shutout in Greenville?s 4-0 win on Monday night. Huntsville (4-2, 36-40) dropped into a first-place title in the Southern League West second-half standings.

G-Braves reliever Matt Coenen, making his first start in place of recently promoted lefty Dan Meyer, delivered six scoreless innings, his longest stint of the season. Coenen (1-1) fanned two and permitted just two hits, two walks and one hit batter while securing his first win.

The Stars? best threat against Coenen came in the fourth, when Prince Fielder led off with a double and took third on Brad Nelson?s groundout. Coenen retired Chris Barnwell on a ground ball to third and Johnny Raburn walked. Kade Johnson flied to center to end the frame, and Huntsville never advanced another runner past first.

Alec Zumwalt delivered three spotless innings of relief, allowing a seventh-inning single to Barnwell, the first batter he faced, then setting down nine straight hitters to close out his first save. Zumwalt recorded one strikeout in each of his three frames.

Greenville?s Napolion Calzado snapped a 0-0 tie in the sixth with a double that scored Juan Velazquez, who opened the inning with a pinch-single. Kelly Johnson slammed a solo homer in the seventh for a 2-0 lead. In the eighth, Tony Pena Jr. doubled home a run and Calzado singled in another to make it 4-0, G-Braves.

Chris Saenz (5-5) suffered a tough loss for Huntsville, throwing 7 1/3 strong innings, his longest outing of the season. Saenz equaled his season-high with eight strikeouts, allowing four runs on five hits, two walks and one hit batter.

After a day off Tuesday, Stars lefty Ryan Costello (4-1, 4.74) meets Mobile righty Clay Hensley (5-7, 5.45) on Wednesday night in the opener of a four-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

GOODBYE TO GREENVILLE MUNI

The book on the Huntsville Stars' 20-year history with the Greenville Braves is now closed, their last game a mere whisper, lasting just two hours and 14 minutes....... Calling on Matt Coenen (1-1, 4.71) for a spot start following the promotion of Dan Meyer to Richmond, he and Alec Zumwalt (1-4, 4.27) silenced the Stars to a pair of doubles and a single.........

The Stars had a shot in the 3rd when Chris Saenz (now .357 at the plate this season with three doubles) drove a two-out double to centerfield and Rickie Weeks walked, but Tony Gwynn grounded out to Aaron Herr to close the inning........ The Stars came as close as they would get in the 4th inning when Prince Fielder slid into 2nd after a leadoff double to the left-centerfield alley....... Brad Nelson moved him over with a grounder to the right side, but after a two-out walk to Johnny Raburn, Kade Johnson flied to center and that was that...... The Stars would not get another man in scoring position the rest of the night.

The Stars saw Coenen and Zumwalt only once this year, both times at the Joe; Coenen giving up a run in his inning, Zumwalt getting two scoreless innings in relief........ Chris Saenz was strong for five innings, giving up just one hit -- a leadoff double by Adam Stern, but the run support he had enjoyed so much in many of his previous starts wasn't here tonight....... He's averaged 4.57 runs per nine IP this year, 5.75 after his first six starts........ This was only the 4th time in 14 starts Saenz didn't get any at all.

So it wouldn't take much for Greenville tonight........ The G'Braves finally scratched through the door in the bottom of the 6th when Napoleon Calzado, 5-for-12 (.417) in this series with a pair of RBIs, hit a hot chopper with two out that kicked off the heel of Chris Barnwell's glove and skipped down the left field line for a double, scoring pinch-hitter Jose Velazquez, who was waiting on 2nd following a bloop single and a sacrifice.

Kelly Johnson provided the G'Braves with a cushion in the 7th, driving a 1-1 pitch to right-center for a homer, his 9th of the year........ The Stars are 2-7 this month when they allow just a home run to their opponents. When they allow two or more, the Stars are 2-6.

The Stars come home now from their last trip to Greenville, unless by some chance they both wind up in the post-season, take a day off and prepare for Mobile on Wednesday........ Ryan Costello (4-1, 4.74) will match up against Clay Hensley (5-7, 5.45), making his 15th start......... The Stars have seen him once. Hensley gave up eight hits in five innings in his one start against the Stars on May 29, but it was a frustrating night for the boys who left 12 on base and lost 9-3........

The Stars will be in Montgomery on July 4th and 5th, so this Friday's and Saturday's fireworks show should draw a large crowd, unless it rains on our parade. Last year, the Stars had The Chicken to provide something special to the holiday draw, but the forecast and rain delay resulted in the smallest Fourth of July crowd since 1989 and the poorest fireworks show I can remember......... But in case the weather's fine, fans can expect Tim Hudson bobbleheads at the turnstiles if they get there early enough, a win, hopefully, and fireworks.

Next year, the Greenville Braves will become the Mississippi Braves, the name the Jackson Clarion-Ledger is giving them, as they move to a new stadium in Pearl, Mississippi, off Interstate 20 east of Jackson. I'm glad their play-by-play announcer, Mark Hauser is going with them. He's one of the best in the league....... Groundbreaking was May 11 and stadium construction has been put on a fast track to get it ready by March of next year........ I don't know what this will do to the divisions, since an Eastern team is now going to become one of the westernmost. I think any of the four Alabama cities in this league would protest vehemently if it had to make frequent road trips to Jacksonville and Carolina, even Knox County. A possibility of North and South divisions is not out of touch. That would put Jacksonville, Mobile, Mississippi, Montgomery, and Birmingham in the South. Huntsville would join West Tennessee, Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Carolina in the north, but they would lose natural rivalries with the other cities in the state, unless the league returns to a balanced schedule, and Huntsville is still trading a 349 mile road trip for one in Pearl that's almost equidistant in the other direction, while getting one in their own division, supposedly, that's second by a hair to Jacksonville in time travel.

So to commemmorate this old match-up between Greenville and Huntsville, here's a few little tidbits to leave you with:

Most info refers to the Stars as an A's affiliate -- MassBrew

Worst season vs. Greenville: 1-7 (2000)

Best season vs. Greenville: 9-3 (1994), .750 and 10-4 (1993), .714

W-L record: 138-131, .513

Record vs. the Greenville team that won 100 games in 1992: 5-9

Record vs. Greenville as a Milwaukee affiliate: 28-31

Chipper Jones vs. Stars pitching in 1992: 1, 1, .227 (6G)

Javier Lopez vs. Stars pitching in 1992: 2, 5, .300 (14G)

Andruw Jones vs. Stars pitching in 1996: 2, 3, .158 (4G)

David Justice vs. Stars pitching in 1988: 3, 8, .323 (8G)

Ryan Klesko vs. Stars pitching in 1991: 2, 10, .273 (16G)

Most bizarre moment:

On May 27, 1993, the Braves had pulled a triple play on the Stars, but when they tried to return the favor on July 26, it was nullified by a successful protest.

Tim Gillis opened the inning with a single to center. Lee Heath followed with a bunt single past pitcher Scott Baker. On a 3-and-2 pitch, the runners took off and left-handed batter Ed Giovanola sliced a liner into the LCF gap. Chris Hart ran it down for the 1st out, then threw to 2nd baseman Francisco Matos who doubled up Gillis for the 2nd out. Matos then threw to first to try for Heath. His low throw skipped past 1st baseman Jim Bowie and Heath took 2nd. Here's where it gets hard to understand. Stars manager Casey Parsons came out and appealed the play, and Heath was thumbed out for not retouching 2nd base as he returned to 1st. Greenville manager Bruce Kimm filed a protest, which was successfully upheld, and the game was replayed, wiping out the triple play, as well as HRs by the Stars' George Williams and John Kuehl, but it gave Fausto Cruz a second chance to break the club record for the longest hitting streak, which was then held by he and Jim Bowie at 19........ Cruz went hitless in the replayed game.

The most strikeouts by an opposing relief pitcher was set by Greenville reliever Del Matthews (10) on July 6, 1997

The longest game in Stars history was against Greenville (23 innings on August 6, 1998 in Greenville.)

The most hits in a double-header by the Stars (27) was against Greenville on May 16, 1994.

Greenville tied a record by issuing the most walks in a Stars game (19) on July 21, 1993. Starter Terrell Wade, in his Double-A debut,.walked 11 in 4 2/3 innings. The Stars won, 13-5.

Five grand-slam HRs have been hit against Greenville pitching, the last time by Danny Ardoin on May 24, 1998.

There were no no-hitters involving Greenville, but Will Schock took a no-hitter against the G'Braves into the 9th inning on Opening Day, 1989, and wound up with a one-hitter, winning 3-1.

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Grady Sizemore drove in two runs and Keith Ramsey and Jake Robbins combined on a six-hit shutout, leading the Buffalo Bisons over the Indianapolis Indians 7-0 Monday night at Victory Field.

Ramsey (1-0) pitched the first six innings, allowing five hits and striking out three. Robbins gave up one hit, an eighth-inning single by Chris Magruder, in three innings of relief.

The Bisons scored four runs in the second inning with RBI singles by Chris Clapinski and Sizemore, an RBI triple by Jhonny Peralta and a run-scoring single by Russell Branyan.

Buffalo added a solo home run by Ernie Young in the fifth inning, an RBI single by Dusty Wathan in the sixth and another RBI single by Sizemore in the eighth.

Adrian Fernandez (0-5) took the loss for the Indians. Fernandez, Ben Ford and Dan Reichert surrendered 14 Bisons hits.

Indians manager Cecil Cooper said the loss was typical of the Tribe's season.

"We came out flat tonight," Cooper said in a news release provided by the Indians. "We just didn't come out and compete. This is our whole season right here."

The loss was Indianapolis' fourth by shutout of the season. They dropped to three games below .500 at 36-39 while Buffalo improved to 42-35.

Etc.

Indians outfielder Jon Nunnally was placed on the disabled list with a broken hand.

Final: Great Falls (White Sox) 8, Helena 7

Helena Independent Republic Game Story:

Brewers die by the sword via ninth-inning grand slam

By TOM COTTON - IR Sports Editor

Derrick McNeil hadn't been even close to getting a hit Monday night - until it counted the most.

The Great Falls shortstop clubbed a grand slam in the top of the ninth inning to drive in the winning runs in an 8-7 Pioneer League victory over Helena.

The 23-year-old from Lutz, Fla., saw Brewers pitcher Ryan Marion try to come inside and McNeil hit a shot over the left-field wall to provide the winning margin.

"I took one pitch and it allowed me to zone in on the other one," McNeil said.

McNeil has seven home runs this season, but hadn't hit a grand slam since his junior year of college at St. Leo College in Florida.

McNeil, who was 0-for-4 before the home run, came away with five RBI on the night. The Sox leadoff hitter was part of a top-of-the-order that was for the most part completely ineffective.

The top five hitters in the lineup were a combined 1-for-22, with McNeil's slam accounting for the only hit.

The Brewers outhit the White Sox 11-7 and Great Falls committed three errors to Helena's two.

Helena scored four runs in the second inning, with Steve Sollman driving in two with a single. Charlie Fermaint also scored on the play when Tom Collaro's throw got away from Great Falls third baseman Melvin Perez.

Adam Mannon and Charlie Lozada each had RBI singles in the third and Helena had a comfortable 6-3 lead.

That would hold up until the seventh when Sox left fielder hit a solo home run to cut the Helena lead to 6-4.

The Brewers then responded with an RBI single by Alberto Segura to lead 7-4. That lead held until McNeil's shot in the ninth.

Mannon was 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored in the game. Hasan Rasheed was 2-for-3 and Sollman was 2-for-4.

Robbie Wooley was sharp in four innings for the Brewers, striking out three and giving up an earned run.

J.D. Johnson picked up the win for Great Falls in 1 1/3 innings of relief.

The loss was Helena's first at home this season and was their second loss in a row.

The loss dropped Helena in a three-way tie for first place in the Northern Division of the Pioneer League. Billings held on for a 7-6 win in Missoula. Billings Helena and Great Falls all sport 6-4 records.

The Brewers and White Sox will meet again tonight at 7:05 p.m. at Kindrick Legion Field.
