ARIZONA: For the first time since Brewerfan's been around, we have no official roster to report (although our Player Index will give you a good idea), no official schedule, no well, nothing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif We're guessing it's hot, that there's no audio (never is), and that we'll hopefully know more tomorrow, as we believe it's Opening Day for the Baby Brewers.

By the way, here's a reminder to the Helena Brewers management team:

"You have a website!"

Pretty embarassing when you've had nine months to tinker with, improve, and update your team's website, and it still has Opening Day rosters from 2003, not to mention no updates of any kind in months.

We're so easy to get along with here at Brewerfan, but unanswered email inquiries during the offseason have left us puzzled.

Here's hoping you folks have a great season up there, but we are thankful that the local newspaper coverage is timely and thorough, otherwise the fan base would know about as much as we currently know about the Arizona Rookie League.

I don't know pogo, but very little predicts things better than a consistent trend upward in statistics as a player rises through the levels. I like that spiffy .294 average to go with the power too.

I think basically the only knock you can put on Corey is his K:BB ratio. I'm not really too worried about his defense...I imagine he has a good arm because he played third at one point. Hard to complain about the walks at the moment, because you can't walk when you're getting a lot of hits, but it will help when he eventually slumps. Anyways...when these pitching promotions eventually happen...I hope they cut some of these bum reliever and starters at AAA.

Final: Buffalo (Indians) 12, Indianapolis 11

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Indianapolis lost a seven run lead for the second consecutive game Wednesday afternoon as Buffalo knocked off the Tribe, 12-11 on Chris Clapinski?s three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth off Tribe reliever Todd Erdos.

The Tribe outhit the Bisons 15-14 and held its biggest lead, 9-2, after four innings. The Bisons chipped away at the lead with five runs in the fifth inning, before Indianapolis added its final tallies in the sixth and the eighth innings.

Buffalo rallied for single runs in the seventh and eighth before adding three runs in the ninth to boost its record to 38-34, dropping the Tribe to 34-36.

QUOTES:

Chris Lapinski on his game winning home run:

"A lot of guys are feeling real confident," said Clapinski. "Once we get rolling, things just seem to go our way. We?re just trying to stay positive all the time. We didn?t dwell at all today on the deficit. Early on in the year, being down might have taken the wind out of our sails. We try to be real positive and keep our heads up. Each win is better than the night before. We?re really playing well as a team."

NOTES:

Indianapolis finished the road trip at 4-8.

During the month of June, the Tribe has posted a 6-15 record and 6.28 ERA.

Peter Bergeron hit his first homer as an Indian Wednesday. Bergeron and Chris Magruder each had three hits to lead the Indians offensive attack.

Matt Erickson extended his hitting streak to 12 games. He is now 19 for 43 during this stretch (.442).

Indianapolis returns to Victory Field for an eight-day, eight game homestand starting Thursday.

Helena Independent Republic Game Story:

Cardiac Brewers pull through in extra frame

By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer - 06/23/04

The Helena Brewers stayed errorless through 10 innings of baseball Tuesday, beating the Missoula Osprey 7-6 at Kindrick Legion Field.

The two teams were tied at 6-66 going into the bottom of the 10th inning, but Alcides Escobar singled to center and Charlie Fermaint was walked. Second baseman Steve Sollman ended the game with a line drive to left-center, scoring Escobar from second.

Sollman was 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Helena club had trailed 5-1 midway through the game, but an explosive fifth inning put the Brewers right back in the mix.

They started the inning with three singles off the bats of Dallas Bates, Escobar and Fermaint, loading the bases with no outs.

Missoula pitcher Salvador Valdez then walked in the Brewers' second run of the game and kept the bases loaded. Tony Festa and Grant Richardson batted in Bates and Escobar before new pitcher Donald Julio could collect the third out.

Bates came through again in the sixth, giving Helena the lead on a two-run homer over the right-field wall.

Bates was 2-for-4 for the night.

Osprey shortstop Juan Olivares also had a home run in the game. He sent one out of the park in the third to give Missoula a 3-0 lead.

Getting the win on the mound was Robbie Wooley, who came in to replace starter Jared Theodorakos in the fourth.

Wooley struck out one and gave up five hits in his four innings on the mound.

Ryan Marion got the save, striking out four in the last three innings.

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Miscues continue to plague Mavs

High Desert commits seven errors in last two games

By TIM HARAN/Staff Writer

RANCHO CUCAMONGA ? For David Bradley, who hadn't received much help from his teammates in his previous three starts, it appeared that the hard-luck right-hander would again throw well only to leave without a win.

Through four innings on Tuesday, Bradley sparkled on the mound and weathered a pair of High Desert errors. He allowed no runs on just a pair of hits.

But then the High Desert Mavericks unraveled. The Quakes erupted for five runs in the fifth ? capitalizing on a throwing error by Bradley ? and trounced the Mavs 8-1 at The Epicenter.

Plagued by errors in the series opener, the Mavs were once again hampered by flawed fielding. After Reggie Willits singled to center to lead off the fifth, Bradley fielded a B.J. Weed bunt in front of the mound. He fired a throw toward first that skipped to the bag and allowed the runners to advance into scoring position. It was the team's third error of the night and seventh in the past two games.

"I just screwed up," Bradley said. "If I hadn't made the error, they would have only scored one (run in the inning)."

To add insult, home plate umpire Jeremy Sparling heard a Mavs player yell something from the bench after the fifth inning and chose to eject Bradley, though he wasn't the culprit, said High Desert manager Mel Queen. It was the third High Desert player to be ejected in as many games.

While the defense failed to shine, coaches weren't enthused about the team's offensive performance, either.

"We didn't exactly crush the ball tonight," Queen said. "Bradley didn't help himself by throwing the ball away. That really opened the gates. He was pitching great until then."

A sacrifice and a single padded the Quakes lead before designated hitter Michael Napoli capped the fifth inning scoring spree by smacking a two-run homer over the right-center field wall. It was Napoli's California League-leading 19th home run of the year.

The Mavs made Quakes' starter Jean Toledo (2-5) labor early, knocking a pair of singles in the first inning to place runners on the corners with nobody out. But Rancho Cucamonga gunned down Callix Crabbe at the plate, forced another fielder's choice and struck out John Vanden Berg to escape the inning without allowing a run.

Travis Hinton put the Mavs out in front in the fourth inning, launching a solo home run deep over the right field wall. It was the all-star first baseman's team-leading 12th home run of the year.

The Quakes scored two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh off Mavs' reliever David Nolasco.

Rancho Cucamonga's Toledo would gladly arrange his schedule for the opportunity to pitch against High Desert every time out. In two previous starts against the Mavs, he was 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA. Against the rest of the league the right-hander was 0-4 with a dismal 10.38 ERA. He allowed one run on four hits Tuesday and picked up the victory.

Bradley (3-4) had allowed just one earned run in each of his previous five appearances ? two starts and three in relief ? against the Quakes. In his last start vs. Rancho Cucamonga on June 17, he gave up an earned run on five hits in a no-decision.

Bradley, who didn't allow a ball to escape the infield until the fifth inning, finished the night allowing five runs ? one earned ? on six hits. He struck out five.

NOTES: Mario Mendez extended his hit streak to eight games with a single in the second inning. ... Outfielder Kennard Bibbs missed his sixth straight game Tuesday. He's listed as day to day with a strained hamstring. ... Quakes' shortstop Erick Aybar left the game in the fifth inning with a stinger after stealing second and colliding with High Desert's Crabbe.
