I admit that I haven't been following as closely this week as I normally do, but did Rogers report to Arizona Wednesday? If so, would July 1 be a realistic target for his first game, or is that too soon?

Ho-hum, Corey Hart with a double. And a triple. And two more RBI. An extra-base machine. What's his EQA for a game like that? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

Undefeated (3-0) in the second half...

Final: Helena 6, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 2

Six consecutive wins, five against the Ospreys; LHP Edwin Walker five strong innings for the win; RHP Derek DeCarlo and LHP Justin Wilson were fine as well; Tony Festa with two doubles...

Speaking of Tony Festa -- this guy just has to make it big -- the potential for celebratory rituals are just too much fun.

Happy Festa-vus, everyone!

In progress: Inland Empire (Mariners) 8, High Desert 5, top of the ninth at Friendly Mavericks' Stadium

Just a hideous, awful top of the ninth here as the Mavs entered with a 5-1 lead and now trail 8-5, and the 66'ers are still swinging -- ugh, I stayed up for this...

Mavs were all set up to move over .500 -- sigh --

High Desert Box Score:

RHP Khalid Ballouli twirls a beauty; 2B Callix Crabbe with a HR and two triples -- wow! -- but it was Crabbe's error that helped open the floodgates in the 9th; even so, still have to blame Homero Rivera there; 3B Troy Farnsworth has provided some production (4 HR, 17 RBI), but that 12-for-75 isn't the veteran presence the 28-year-old was supposed to provide in Jeff Eure's absence; 17 errors in 66 games for SS Enrique Cruz this year -- not good...

Arizona Rookie Box Score:

20-year-old catcher Nestor Corredor is apparently very strong defensively -- he was the emergency choice for two games in Huntsville early this season -- subsequently assigned to Helena, he is now in Arizona, where his defensive skills may have been needed based on some of the struggles we saw behind the plate in earlier Arizona box scores. Corredor's hit into some poor luck as well, however, now a combined 1-for-29 (two sacrifice bunts, one sacrifice fly, two walks, only five K's). That leaves us asking -- where's 2003 5th round catcher Bryan Opdyke? RHP Jeff Garner, the 24-year-old signed from the independent ranks recently, takes the loss here. He's expected to be moved to Beloit or even High Desert at some point; 1B Carlos Gallardo is now 6-for-12, 2B Hernan Iribarren is 6-for-14...

Helena Box Score:

Another error-free, well-pitched, game from this group with solid offense -- you've got to love what we've seen at this level thus far; Washington State 1B product Grant Richardson a man among boys; after reading articles out of San Antonio two years ago about then-high school LHP Edwin Walker, he was a favorite draft pick of mine at the time -- excited about his injury bounce-back in the early going here; and yes, I'm probably going to tout 17-year-old SS Alcides Escobar every day this summer -- get used to it :)...

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

I can pretty much guarantee that Indy is the only AAA market that does not have reporters covering home games...

Chris Magruder hit a two-run home run in the third inning and Corey Hart tripled in two runs in the fifth as the Indianapolis Indians beat the Syracuse SkyChiefs 7-3 Friday night at Victory Field.

The Indians (36-36) totaled 10 hits to win for the second night in a row.

Jeff Farnsworth (2-2) pitched 72/3 innings and struck out five Syracuse batters for the win.

The SkyChiefs (30-45) took a 2-0 lead in the first on a home run by third baseman Glenn Williams.

But Indianapolis tied the score with runs in the first and second, then took a 7-2 lead with two runs in the third and three in the fifth.

Syracuse scored once more in the sixth when Gabe Gross homered to right field, but Farnsworth and Indians reliever Matt Childers held the SkyChiefs scoreless over the last three innings.

"Our team has been struggling," Farnsworth said in a news release from the Indians. "It's not fun when you're losing. Everybody tries to do a little too much. Tonight, we wanted to do the same thing that we did (Thursday). That is, we wanted to play relaxed and stay within ourselves.

"Everybody played well this evening. We got our hits and I pitched well. The coaches have done a great job calming us down. We want to . . . win the next 20."

Mike Smith (3-3) took the loss for Syracuse.

Third baseman Wes Helms, on a rehabilitation assignment from Milwaukee, went 1-for-4.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Stars Complete Sweep with 8-1 Win

Make it four in a row for the streaking Stars, who completed a three-game sweep of Tennessee and secured their fourth straight victory ? tying their season high ? with an 8-1 whipping of the Smokies (39-33, 0-3) on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (34-38, 3-0) remained in first place in the Southern League West second-half standings.

Four Stars pitchers combined to shackle Tennessee?s bats, and Huntsville scored in every inning from the fifth through the eighth to complete the Stars? first series sweep of the season. Starter Dennis Sarfate (4-7) notched his fourth win and snapped his personal three-game losing streak with 5 2/3 solid innings, allowing only one run on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

Three relievers authored spotless work, with Paul Stewart making his first appearance since his return from Triple-A Indianapolis. Stewart tossed 1 1/3 perfect innings, then Jason Shelley and Saul Rivera each spun a scoreless frame, allowing one hit apiece with Shelley fanning one.

Down 1-0 in the fifth, the Stars came alive against Smokies starter Jeremy Cook. Johnny Raburn led off with a single, then Ozzie Chavez bunted on the third-base side. Skip Schumaker charged in and dove for the ball, attempting to catch it on the fly. The ball bounced off his glove and rolled behind home plate, sending Raburn to third and Chavez to second. Joel Alvarado promptly singled to left to score a run, and one out later Rickie Weeks grounded into a force play, scoring Chavez for a 2-1 lead.

Prince Fielder walked to start the sixth, and Brad Nelson slammed a two-run homer to left, his team-high 14th of the season. One out later, Raburn singled to right and took second when Chavez reached on Schumaker?s error at third. With the runners in motion, Alvarado?s groundout to short advanced them to second and third. Reliever Andy Cavazos? wild pitch gave Huntsville a 5-1 lead.

In the seventh, Chris Barnwell delivered a two-out, run-scoring single to right, then Huntsville got two in the eighth. Chavez led off with a walk and took third on Alvarado's double to left. Weeks? one-out walk loaded the bases, and Tony Gwynn Jr. singled home Chavez. Fielder hit a bouncer up the middle, where second baseman Javier Colina booted the ball for an error, with Alvarado scoring for an 8-1 lead.

Cook (2-3) suffered the loss, permitting five runs, four earned, on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

Stars lefty Matt Ford (1-2, 3.60) meets G-Braves righty Brian Moehler (2-3, 5.29) in game one of a three-game series at Municipal Stadium in Greenville on Saturday night. Game time is 6:15 p.m. CT and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game Show starts at 6:00 p.m. CT. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Times Game Story:

Four of a kind's a winner

Huntsville equals season-high win streak by completing sweep

By PAUL GATTIS

Times Sports Staff pgattis@htimes.com

So is it true that the greatest of floods can start with the smallest of trickles?

Sometimes all it takes is the innocence of a bunt to unleash a deluge of runs, a lesson learned Friday night by the Tennessee Smokies.

Sparked by a sacrifice bunt by Ozzie Chavez, the Huntsville Stars scored in each of their final four at-bats for an 8-1 win and the finishing touch on a three-game sweep of the Smokies.

Before an announced crowd of 4,319 at Joe Davis Stadium, the Stars matched their season-long four-game winning streak by getting strong pitching from starter Dennis Sarfate and three relievers, a double and a two-run homer by Brad Nelson and two runs and two hits by Johnny Raburn.

The bunt by Chavez was perhaps most lethal of all.

It happened in the fifth inning with the Stars trailing 1-0. Raburn led off with a single and the task before Chavez was to bunt him to second base. But the bunt was popped down the third base line and Tennessee third baseman Skip Schumaker dove to make the catch.

But the ball short-hopped his glove and Schumaker - in his diving attempt - inadvertently knocked the ball back toward home plate, past catcher Dan Moylan and into foul territory.

With the ball rolling free, Raburn reached third and Chavez scampered to second.

Then Joel Alvarado followed with a single off losing pitcher Jeremy Cook (2-3) that scored Raburn and Rickie Weeks grounded into a fielder's choice to score Chavez.

And the Friday night fireworks show came early. Nelson's homer highlighted a three-run sixth inning, Chris Barnwell knocked a run-scoring single to right after Prince Fielder was intentionally walked ahead of him in the seventh, and Gwynn and Fielder each had RBIs as the Stars added two more runs in the eighth.

So after losing nine of their last 11 to end the first half, the Stars are now 3-0 to start the second half.

"Obviously, it's nice," Stars manager Frank Kremblas said. "It's really nice."

The Stars scored eight runs in a game for only the second time since June 8. In fact, the Stars had won their previous three games by scoring a total of just seven runs.

"We got some runs (after the bunt) and that takes the pressure off of you," Kremblas said. "The biggest thing was that we relaxed."

At the same time, the Stars pitchers made the eight runs seem like a surplus. Sarfate (4-7) allowed four hits and a run in 5 2/3 innings while relievers Paul Stewart, Jason Shelley and Saul Rivera combined to allowed two hits in a scoreless 3 2/3 innings.

"He did good," Kremblas said of Sarfate. "He struggled with his command all night. But he made the pitches when he needed to make them."

Just as Chavez made the bunt when he needed to make it.

Helena Game Story from the Missoulian:

O's clipped at new home

By KIM BRIGGEMAN

The pomp was something else. But it was the same old circumstance Friday night for the Missoula Osprey on the opening night of Play Ball Park.

The Helena Brewers ruined the reverie of an Osprey record 2,526 fans with their fifth victory in as many nights with a 6-2 decision over the floundering O's, who fell to 1-7.

Helena (6-2) solved Missoula starter Shane Dove for four runs in the tell-tale third inning, and Osprey hitters stranded 10 base runners, including two on third base in the late innings.

"We should have scored five runs easy," said O's manager Jim Presley.

Instead it was the Brewers that came through.

They lashed 12 hits off four Missoula southpaws - Dove, Todd Stein, Vince Davis and Hipolito Guerrero. Stein and Davis were making their professional debuts.

Brewers first baseman Grant Richardson had a two-run single with two outs in the third, two batters after Steve Sollman knocked in the first run in Play Ball Park. Helena scored the clinching run in the ninth after Guerrero retired the first two batters, on a base hit by Richardson and a ringing double by third baseman Tony Festa.

"We allowed four runs after two outs," said Osprey pitching coach Wellington Cepeda. "That's been the biggest problem lately. We've been giving up too much with two outs. We're just one pitch away from maybe a one-run inning or no runs."

Left fielder Jaen Centeno continued his torrid streak for Missoula with a 2-for-3 night. He drove in Missoula's second run in the eighth inning and made a diving catch in the outfield, both after turning an ankle in the muddy basepath after doubling in the second inning.

Derek Bruce had a three-hit night for Missoula in his second game as the leadoff hitter.

Five Brewers had two hits apiece, and both of Festa's were doubles.

Ironically, two of Helena's hottest hitters, outfielders Charlie Fermaint and Adam Mannon, went 0-for-9. Fermaint struck out five times against three different Osprey pitchers.

Dove, who owns Missoula's lone pitching victory, started out on fire. He struck out the first three Brewers - Hasan Rasheed, Sollman and Fermaint - on just 11 pitches with a nasty breaking ball.

But things unraveled for Dove in the third inning. Dallas Bates led off with a single that center fielder Miguel Matos bobbled, allowing Bates time to make second base.

Alcides Escobar laid down a sacrifice bunt that took a sideways hop. Missoula first baseman Javier Brito fielded it but couldn't reach Escobar on the base line to make the tag.

Soon after Sollman had his historic RBI double and Richardson, who's batting nearly .500 this season, scorched a single down the left field line to score two.

Missoula tries again to break its five-game losing streak Saturday night in the new park.

The Osprey send right-hander Ben Krantz, their starter in a 9-8 loss in Helena on Monday, against the Brewers' Josh Baker.

Definitely nice to see the Stars winning, rather than losing. Idle speculation: Noting that Nelson and Hart are just extra base hit monsters, it kind of stands out that Prince has significantly fewer doubles than they do. It's common for minor league doubles to turn into major league HR as the power guys develop, but we also know that Prince has plenty of power already. I wonder considering the detiriorated strike zone adjustment this year if he hasn't gotten homer happy in his approach?
