Link Report for Games of Thursday, June 24th

MassBrew

Must prepare myself for the first truly "full" six-team Link Report by sunning and surfing on Cape Cod beaches today *insert smirk here*. So, hopefully I can keep the sand out of the sandwiches in your Daily Menu:

Brewers have a matinee -- we expect to see your listening reports tonight! Not necessarily play-by-play, but news and notes would be nice -- a Ben-and-Manny twinbill, wow!

All times Central except Arizona Rookie (local Mountain); pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed...

INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Ben Hendrickson at home vs. Syracuse (Blue Jays), 7:05 PM; the other day, the Indy site proclaimed in big letters across their home page that we should "listen live" -- fix the link!

ARIZONA ROOKIE: The kids travel to the Padres' complex for a 10:30 affair; 19-year-old Dominican LHP Rafael Lluveres makes his state-side debut after two solid seasons in the DSL; he's listed at 6'4", 150 lbs. -- hopefully his U.S. diet plan can address that...

So we've got Big Ben, little Ben, and Manny today? Hmm that's some good stuff. And one can't help but be intrigued by Justin Barnes for atleast a few starts to see how his position swap is going.

Igor, wasn't he a DFE signing as something like a 3b or OF? If so, then it explains why I was scratching my head last week when I saw he pitched.

Justin was drafted in 2001 by the Mets as a 3b, then drafted by the Brewers in 2002 (by Taylor, Jack Z) as a RHP, but after posting good numbers in JuCo as a hitter, he was signed by the new regime as 3b again.

After less than stellar offensive performance, they decided to try him at RHP again (I think he has a 92mph sinking FB, but Patrick or Toby can correct me).

Tribe goes 1-2-3 in their half of the first. Sky Chiefs get 1 off of little Ben as they start the 2nd with 3 consecutive singles (2 grounds placed well, and 1 solid line drive). Ben worked out of the inning and limited the damage with another DP, this one went 5-4-3. Corey Hart leads of the bottom of the second with a groundout to third.

2-1 Indians after two. At least one Ben is getting some run support todayhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/mad.gif . Helms doubled, Johnson and Coste singled along with the hitter after Coste (sorry was doing some laundry and missed it).

We'll catch up on the earlier action here shortly; I've chosen to let Manny Parra entertain me over the airwaves tonight...

Mario Mendez' 11 putouts in center field last night for High Desert matched an over 60-year-old California League record for putouts by an outfielder.

That's what Mavs' pitching coach John Curtis was referring to when he mentioned he would have liked to have seen Bo Hall keep the ball down more last night.

Update, in progress: High Desert 5, Inland Empire (Mariners) 4, after 4.5 innings at Friendly Mavericks Stadium

Roxy, I'd love to listen to more, but the audio feed has been pulling in some funky dual voiceover for a couple of innings now (sounds like movie audio) -- sorry, bud, just very tough to listen to...

once again, it's fun to point out that we're kind of disappointed by starts like this from Ben. Shows how far the system has come

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Something had to give at Victory Field Thursday night.

The Syracuse Skychiefs began a four-game series in Indianapolis on a five-game losing streak while the Indians came home from a 4-8 road trip that included losing the last two games despite leading each game by seven runs.

Unfortunately for the Skychiefs, what gave was the bat of Indianapolis catcher Chris Coste, who was a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the host Indians to a 6-5 win before 8,217 fans.

"It?s just one of those things," Coste said. "I knew he (Syracuse pitcher Jose Matos) had a good curve ball and in my first at-bat I guessed curve ball on every pitch and got a hit. On my next attempt I geared up for his fast ball and sometimes I guess you get a little lucky."

The Skychiefs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when left fielder Simon Pond led off the inning with a single and scored two batters later on a single by first baseman Shawn Fagan.

The Indians struck right back in the bottom of the second when third baseman Wes Helms hit a one-out double and scored on a single by designated hitter Mark Johnson. Coste then hit a RBI single down the right field line that scored Johnson.

Coste was just getting started. He added a two-run homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the fourth that scored Helms, who opened the inning with a single. Coste also added a leadoff double in the bottom of the seventh.

"The difference tonight was we were making great pitches and we weren?t afraid to swing the bat," Coste said.

Syracuse scored two runs in the top of the fifth to cut the Indians lead to 4-3.

Second baseman Jorge Sequea opened the inning with a single and scored two batters later when shortstop Russ Adams hit a one-out triple to deep center. Adams then scored when center fielder Stubby Clapp grounded out to second.

Indianapolis got two runs in the bottom of the seventh when Coste opened the inning with a double and scored on a triple to left field by first baseman Brandon Gemoll, who scored on a sacrifice fly to deep center by Luis Figueroa.

The Skychiefs made things interesting in the final two innings.

In the top of the eighth, Clapp threw a lead-off walk and Gross followed with an infield single. Indians second baseman Matt Erickson had a throwing error on the infield single that put runners on second and third with no outs.

After third baseman Glenn Williams lined out to second, Pond hit a two-run double to right-center to cut the lead to 6-5. Julius Matos and Shawn Fagan then struck out to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth, Syracuse had runners on first and third with two outs before Gross grounded out to third to end the game.
