Jorge's line is pretty nice tonight. 6IP 5H 0BB. Nice to see. I stated in another post that we have no real stud pitchers close to the majors. It's only one night but this guy was thought of as a top prospect earlier this year.

oh yeah...Jorge pitched multiple innings (I'm not talking two or three) and had NO walks

by far his best game of the season (without researching game logs...but he's been the one I keep my eye on).

this kid is young too...remember that

It is great to see Jorge have that kind of start this evening. A big turnaround from him this season would shed a light on an otherwise turbulent season for so many of our top prospects.

Krynzel on base 3 times, Hart does the same, with a couple of walks. However, similar to my disappointment in Gwynn's BB:K ratio this year, what happened to Krynzel's ability to steal bases? I know he needed to improve his efficiency, but he has been really down in that dep't. all season long.

As MB would quickly point out, the Snappers go walkless yet again.

Too bad the Helena squad couldn't take advantage of the possibility of clinching a playoff spot in the first half. Justin Barnes with his worst start of the season from what I've seen, although he didn't hand out the free passes, which is always good.

Both Gwynn's & Weeks' HRs were against talented Cubs' prospect Bobby Brownlie. Nice to see them both with good games.

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

GAME SUMMARY:

Jorge De La Rosa pitched six scoreless innings Tuesday night as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Norfolk Tides, 6-0. The victory evened the three-game series at 1-1, with the rubber game to be decided Wednesday morning at 11:15 a.m. from Harbor Park.

De La Rosa (2-6), who had struggled in four July starts, posting an 0-1 record and 7.94 ERA, picked up the victory, allowing five hits, walking none and striking out five. He teamed with Clint Weibl and Ben Ford to secure the club?s fifth shutout. The shutout was the Tribe pitching staff?s first since July 9, a 3-0 victory over Ottawa at Victory Field.

The Tribe offense got untracked early, scoring a run in the second inning and two in the fourth to take an early 3-0 lead off Otterbein, Ind. (Benton Central High School) native Neal Musser.

Chris Coste scored two runs and collected three hits to lead the Tribe attack. Indianapolis is now 44-59, while Norfolk falls to 47-53.

QUOTES:

Chris Coste, Tribe first baseman:

?We?ve had a lot of leads in these games where we?ve lost the past two months,? Coste said. ?It?s nice to see our pitching staff do a great job finishing tonight. We need to do a lot more of this. I prefer catching and third base, but it was fun to play first base tonight. Jorge De La Rosa threw strikes. He has three pitches and when he can have command of two of those, he can be very tough. You will see him in the big leagues someday. He has tremendous stuff and once he throws strikes consistently, you will definitely remember his name.?

NOTES:

Indianapolis will return to Victory Field, Thursday to begin a two-day, three game series with the Norfolk Tides. Tickets are available for the Thursday doubleheader and Friday game online at www.IndyIndians.com, the Victory Field box office or by calling (317) 269-3545.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Trailing 2-0 with West Tenn prospect Bobby Brownlie throwing darts from the mound, things looked bleak for the Stars after the first time through their batting order. Huntsville promptly reeled off six unanswered runs on its way to a 6-3 win on Tuesday night at Pringles Park. The Stars (17-12, 49-50) remained tied with Birmingham atop the Southern League West second-half standings.

?We changed our approach against Brownlie the second time through,? Stars hitting instructor Sandy Guerrero said. ?Rickie [Weeks] and Tony [Gwynn Jr.] both hit good fastballs, then he got out of his game and made a few mistakes.?

Rickie Weeks hit a fourth-inning solo homer to cut the deficit in half, and Huntsville took the lead on Tony Gwynn Jr.?s two-run, sixth-inning blast. Gwynn?s drive came on a 3-2 pitch and prompted the ejection of Jaxx skipper Bobby Dickerson, who argued vociferously that ball three to Gwynn should have been called strike two.

Huntsville sealed the game with three in the seventh on Ryan Knox?s run-scoring single ? a 3-2 base hit through the drawn-in infield, knocking Brownlie out of the game ? Weeks? RBI-single and Prince Fielder?s bases-loaded hit-by-pitch.

Reliever Paul Stewart (5-1) notched his fifth win, fanning three and allowing one hit over 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Brownlie (9-7) suffered his seventh loss, permitting five earned runs on six hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. John Novinsky picked up his 13th save in 14 chances, fanning two in a perfect ninth.

Stars lefty Jeff Housman (4-6, 3.23) meets Jaxx left-hander Ryan O?Malley (1-1, 3.79) in game two of the series Wednesday night at Pringles Park. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game Show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

GWYNN'S SECOND WIND

From this point on, the Stars have only eight games out of their own division........ The remaining 32 games are against teams in their own division, and starting with this series with the Diamond Jaxx, one of the two teams they need to hold off right now, 12 of them are against this team, eight of them at Pringles Park........ So, they are off to a good start, with 19 home games (including make-up games against Birmingham) ahead of them in August.

The weather was perfect 76° tonight at Pringles Park. The Stars hadn't seen better weather, unusually cool and dry for July....... Unfortunately, the game didn't start off as well........ Bobby Brownlie, the Southern League ERA leader and the #6 prospect in the Cubs' organization instantly took command.

With a 1-0 lead, thanks to a sacrifice fly in the 2nd inning, Brownlie had allowed just one hit through three innings. Tony Gwynn, Jr., who singled in the 1st, had been picked off. Brownlie struck out the side in the 2nd and retired the side in order in the 3rd........ Matt Ford, struggling with his control, got off easy, allowing just a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded and one out. The effects of elbow soreness may still be lingering. He hasn't consistently been able to get to or past the 5th inning, reaching his pitch limit of 75 before getting that far....... . In the bottom half for WT, Ford appeared to be out of an inning when Matt Creighton, who hit into a double play in his first at-bat, muscled a solo home run to left-center. It was just his 2nd home run in 138 at-bats........ Just one batter previously, Ford had been saved by a line out double play by Richard Lewis, the league's 2nd leading hitter. Lewis had hit into only two double plays all season.

Rickie Weeks provided Ford with a smaller margin, thanks to a leadoff home run way over the head of left fielder Mike Dzurilla......... It was Weeks' 6th homer of the season......... Weeks has lined all his others. This one had more majesty to it, the first one he actually sent into orbit as it passed by the light pole in left.

Ford got out of the 4th, thanks again to another double play, but after getting the first two batters out in the 5th, started hitting the bumps....... After retiring Aron Weston on a 3-1 grounder to Prince Fielder, Richard Lewis was not going to be denied. He singled a 1-1 pitch on a hop to left-center........ A wild pitch in the dirt moved him to second. Matt Creighton walked on a 3-2 pitch....... Paul Stewart, who had been warming up in the pen, got the call. (Johnny Raburn came in for Ozzie Chavez in a double switch.). He struck out Matt Craig to finish the inning.

Essentially, that's the last bit of trouble the D'Jaxx gave the Stars for the rest of the night........ The bullpen, with a 7-2 record, 7 saves, and a 3.14 ERA in the month of July, continued to build on their credentials. They gave up just one run on two hits and a couple of walks for the remaining 4 1/3 innings.

It didn't take too long for the Stars to lumber up........ Kade Johnson chopped Brownlie's first pitch to shortstop Ronnie Cedeno, who had to make a diving stab to stop it, but Kade, who runs pretty good for a backstop, beat Cedeno's throw, even if it was off the mark. Kade, .297 in the 2nd half, is hitting .347 for July, his best month this season, beating his .340 April start........ Raburn dropped a bunt to move Kade over and an off-line throw following a fly ball by Weeks moved him to third........ Brownlie went full on Gwynn, Jr., who fouled off a couple of pitches on the way to a 3-2 count, then hit a high drive over the head of Weston to put the Stars ahead, 3-2, after a questionable ball three......... The ball three call made Bobby Dickerson, the D'Jaxx manager, angry, but the home run really set him off like a rocket........ Racing out of the dugout and throwing his cap to the ground, he went nose-to-nose with home plate ump Scot Chamberlain until Chamberlain finally threw him out........ Gwynn doesn't go deep often. It was only his 2nd home run, in fact. But Gwynn, who perhaps should have been headed back to the dugout on that ball three call, at least according to many partisan observers, got his second wind and made the most of it......... It did not break open this game, but it was the turning point.

The Stars sealed the game with a three-run 7th that put them ahead 6-2. Jamie Gann started the rally with a leadoff double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, then came home on a single on a 3-2 pitch through a drawn-in infield by Ryan Knox......... Former Knoxville Smokies pitcher Hugo Castellanos entered and Kade Johnson squibbed a single behind the mound. That was followed by a walk to Johnny Raburn......... Rickie Weeks' infield single with the bases full made it 5-2 and when Prince Fielder was hit in the butt by Castellanos' pitch, it drove home Raburn........ That was all the Stars needed........ They are now 13-9 in June and 17-12 in the second half, still tied with Birmingham after the Barons destroyed Montgomery, 19-2. Former Star Richard Paz went 4-for-5 and drove in five runs in that game.

The Stars are home for 19 games (including those make-up games) in August, and each one of those are against division rivals --- only four against last place Montgomery and none against the team the Stars could face for the Western Division title, the home run happy Mobile Bay Bears, who have hit 26 home runs off Stars pitching, more than half as many as the next club, Birmingham and Tennessee, each with 12........ The Stars have a stretch of 16 games down the road in which they face the Diamond Jaxx 10 times.

Jeff Housman (4-6, 3.23, 5th among Southern League ERA leaders) will face left-hander Ryan O'Malley (1-1, 3.79), Wednesday. Housman is having his best month, with a 3-1, 1.96 July.

Beloit Game Summary from the Timber Rattlers' Site:

For the second game in a row the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Beloit Snappers. Justin Ruchti singled in the winning run for a 5-4 Rattler win Tuesday night. Chad Fillinger made his Rattler debut and picked up the win with two perfect innings in relief of Nibaldo Acosta.

Beloit (54-48 overall, 16-16 second half) scored twice in the top of the first inning on a two-out, two-run double by Adam Heether.

Wisconsin (45-56, 14-18) answered with their most productive first inning of the second half. Beloit starter Brian Montalbo walked the first two Rattler batters. Adam Jones delivered a two-run double to tie the game. Bryan LaHair followed with an RBI single for a 3-2 Rattler lead. Another walk and an error loaded the bases. Josh Womack grounded into a double play, but LaHair scored to make it a two run advantage for Wisconsin.

The Snappers got an unearned run in the top of the fourth. Steve Moss sent a slow grounder to short. Rattler third baseman Chris Collins cut in front and made the play, but threw wildly. Adam Heether scored all the way from first.

Manuel Ramirez tied the game with a two-out RBI single in the top of the sixth off Acosta.

Wladimir Balentien started the game winning rally with a one out double. Ruchti fouled off a tough 1-2 pitch and then sent a single into left to extend his season high hitting streak to six games and send Balentien home with the winning run.

The Helena Brewers lost 6-2 to Provo on Tuesday night at Kindrick Legion Field to finish the first half of the season second in the Pioneer League's North Division.

A Helena win would have put the club in first to finish the first half, but the loss left the Brewers a half game behind Billings.

The Mustangs had a game in Missoula earlier in the season wiped off the schedule, leading to their slight advantage in the standings.

Provo scored five of its six runs in the third inning, when second baseman Ryan Leahy hit an RBI single off right-hander Justin Barnes, and designated hitter Andrew Toussaint cranked a three-run homer over the center field wall.

"We've got to take our hats off to Provo," Helena manager Johnny Narron said. "They had four pitchers throw hard at us. They played a great game."

The last run was on a sacrifice fly from Mike Perdomo.

Perdomo's sacrifice brought in the last run the Angels would score. The Brewers brought in Josh Wahpepah, who pitched the last six innings of the game without a walk and only one hit.

"Wahpepah was lights out," said Narron. "That was some of the better pitching you'll see at this field. He threw a great game."

The Helena ace sat down the first three batters in every inning but the eighth, racking up five strikeouts and allowing only three baserunners.

A flawless Helena defense also was a key part of keeping the Angels from any more runs.

The Brewers didn't commit a single error in the game, and only one Provo player had more than one hit in the game.

Toussaint went 2-for-4, and on top of his homer, drove in the only Provo run outside of the third inning.

Unfortunately for the Brewers, the Angels were errorless too and only allowed five hits.

Gilberto Acosta had one of Helena's two RBI in the game, driving in Charlie Fermaint with a double off the wall in right-center.

Fermaint had the other RBI, with a long shot to left-center that scored Grant Richardson, but Fermaint tried to stretch the hit into a triple and was thrown out at the bag.

Richardson led the team in hits, going 2-for-3 in the game.

Helena will start the second half of the season tonight in Billings at 7:05.

Definitely a good night for some of our hitting prospects. Weeks now with a .373 OBP, which is pretty darn good in the Southern League. Corey Hart getting hot again raising his OBP to almost .350 which is pretty good for that league and especially that park. Krynzel gets a couple of hits to flirt with .300, but you can't help but question his game a little bit with his relative lack of power and still King that often. Heether continues to pound out doubles.

Helena's Justin Barnes K:BB ratio is outstanding - despite getting knocked around slightly yesterday, he's having a very solid year. Wahpehpa had a stellar line last night as well.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

I.E. bullpen shuts down Mavericks; Villanueva, Van Iderstine extend hit streaks in loss

By TIM HARAN/Staff Writer

SAN BERNARDINO ? Stretching the starting pitching was a top priority.

Neither Inland Empire nor High Desert was eager to make a quick call to the bullpen on Tuesday night, considering the teams had combined to play 7 hours and 31 minutes of baseball over 22 innings the previous two days.

The Mavericks kept their starter on the mound as long as they could, but by the time Greg Bruso was pulled in the fifth inning, the damage had been done. Inland Empire roughed up the Mavs' right-hander for six runs in 4 2-3 innings en route to a 7-2 victory at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.

"He didn't find his rhythm the first couple of innings but then he settled down," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "He might have started to tire a little in (the fifth)."

For Inland Empire, starter Michael Rowland-Smith appeared to strain his knee with two outs in the first inning, forcing his team into early bullpen activity. Despite wincing after each pitch in the following frame, the 6-foot-3 left-hander gutted out a scoreless second inning before giving way to reliever Darwin Soto in the third.

Turns out, the early call worked just fine.

Soto (2-4), who had not pitched more than three innings in any single outing this season, worked five scoreless innings against the Mavs. He allowed just two hits and struck out six.

"He's got an excellent changeup," Queen said of the 66ers' middle reliever. "Unless you can go up there and know how to sit on a changeup, he's going to get you out."

Rowland-Smith, who will compete next month for Australia in the Olympic Games, allowed one unearned run on four hits before leaving the game. He reportedly strained his patella tendon while trying to cover first base.

Froilan Villanueva put High Desert in front early on Tuesday, knocking an RBI single in the top of the first. But the lead didn't stand as Jon Nelson doubled in the bottom of the inning to drive in the first of his three runs on the night. He scored on Carlos Arroyo's bloop single.

The 66ers loaded the bases in the second inning before Nelson knocked a 3-0 pitch into shallow left field, driving in a pair of runs. The left fielder went 4-for-5 on the night, with two doubles.

Inland Empire (17-15) scored two more in the fifth inning, chasing Bruso, and added another on Gary Harris' solo home run to lead off the eighth.

High Desert (11-21) threatened in its half of the eighth, placing runners on first and third with no outs. But 66ers second baseman Michael Garciaparra backhanded Travis Hinton's shot up the middle and flipped the ball to Juan Gonzalez, starting the turn of a key double play.

"Any time you're coming back and the first two guys get on with base hits, a double play just takes all the steam out of you," Queen said. "The big part of that play was that Garciaparra called it. He let the shortstop know that he needed to break off and go back toward the bag."

Mavs' reliever Dan Kolb, after pitching a pair of innings on Sunday, struck out Harris to escape the fifth and allowed just one run in 3 1-3 innings of relief.

"We really needed him to finish that off tonight and he did," Queen said.

NOTES: Ben Van Iderstine, who went 3-for-4, extended his hit streak to nine games. ... Villanueva extended his hit streak to 12 games, matching his and the team's longest of the season. ... The Mavs scored in the first inning for the third straight game ... Jeff Eure, normally a third baseman, entered the game at shortstop in the eighth inning after Enrique Cruz aggravated a sore finger that has bothered him for about 10 days, Queen said.
