Helena defeated Ogden by a score of 10-2, knocking out thirteen hits and taking advantage of 5 Ogden errors. Looks like good pitching from Wahpehpah and Barnes, and good hitting from the bottom of the order.

Leading 8-7 in the bottom of the 9th

They tie it up and go on to load the bases, but Novinsky works out of it somehow.

Brad Nelson 3 run Bomb at the top of the 10th - we lead 11-8 - its all over!

No it isn't - Greg Sain 2 run homer.................. but Novinsky hangs on to close it out - we win 11-10.

If this wasn't just about development, it would have been one h*** of a ball game.

(Homers from Knox & Prince as well & lots of other good stuff)

You'll be disgusted to know that the Stars have turned down my suggestion that the new scoreboard be converted to only show WHIP & OPS and leave the scoring out entirely!

My representations to the Southern League that genuine prospects be given extra plate appearances and increased opportunities to steal, has also met with stony silence.

These neanderathals obviously have no idea what the ML clubs want and it shall be their downfall!!!!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

On a serious note - how many people think that Ned actually knows what OXS is?

Final: Durham (Devil Rays) 8, Indianapolis 4, 6.5 innings, rain

The Tribe's 10th loss in a row, as they take Al the Thinking Man's 0-140 to heart -- Indy now with the worst record in all the International League...

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Cecil Cooper obviously doesn't subscribe to the Ned Yost rose-colored glasses post-game commentary; with double-headers Friday and Saturday, this losing streak could reach epic proportions quickly; bye-bye, Indianapolis, 2005 and beyond...

Durham jumped on Indianapolis starter Adrian Hernandez (0-6) Thursday night for eight runs as the Bulls defeated the Tribe, 8-4, in a rain shortened game that included an hour and 18 minute delay at the outset of the contest.

Indianapolis scored three runs in the first behind a two-run homer from Corey Hart and a solo shot from Jeff Liefer. The Tribe held a 4-2 lead after three innings, before the Bulls staged a two-out rally that resulted in six runs during the fourth inning.

The loss was the Tribe?s 10th setback in a row, which ties a team record, dating back to 1998 (August 6 to August 16). Indianapolis is now 42-55 and remains 10 games behind IL West leader Columbus. Durham improves to 50-47 and sweeps the Tribe in the two-game series.

QUOTES:

Cecil Cooper, Tribe manager on the loss:

?We had lousy pitching tonight,? Cooper said. ?It?s a crying shame. I told our guys that it?s embarrassing the way that we are playing. It?s that simple.?

NOTES:

The Tribe travels to Richmond for a pair of doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday. Richmond (53-43) stands in first place in the IL South Division.

Indianapolis Box Score:

Please put Adrian Hernandez out of his misery, Doug...

Final: Huntsville 11, Mobile (Padres) 10, 10 innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

If the Stars qualify for the post-season, Thursday night could well be remembered as a turning point. After blowing an 8-4 lead, Huntsville survived a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the ninth and defeated Mobile in 10 innings at Hank Aaron Stadium, 11-10. The Stars (15-11, 47-49) avoided a sweep and vaulted into a first-place tie with Birmingham in the Southern League West second-half standings. Huntsville opens a four-game series against the rival Barons on Friday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

?We weren?t going to let them out-hit us,? Stars third baseman Chris Barnwell said. ?We just battled. We had our best arm out there in the ninth. When it counted, John [Novinsky] made the pitches. He did an awesome job.?

Down 4-1 in the third, Stars leftfielder Ryan Knox unloaded on a 3-2 pitch from Clay Hensley, slamming a two-run homer to left, his third of the season. Huntsville got three in the fifth on a wild pitch and run-scoring singles from Barnwell and Ozzie Chavez. Prince Fielder launched a prodigious two-run homer in the sixth, carrying the Budweiser sign high atop the scoreboard in right-center for his 15th of the year.

Down 8-4, the Bay Bears started to claw back with Steve Morales? sixth-inning solo homer. Joe Gerber and Josh Barfield drove in one run apiece in the seventh, then Mobile tied it in the ninth. Greg Sain led off with a double and Gerber doubled home Sain. Barfield was intentionally walked and Ronnie Merrill singled on the infield, loading the bases with none out. Novinsky escaped the jam, fanning Morales, inducing Jason Clements to hit into a force-out at home and retiring Kennard Jones on a fly ball to center.

In the top of the 10th, Tony Gwynn Jr. ripped a one-out double and Fielder received an intentional pass. Brad Nelson sent R.D. Spiehs? 1-2 pitch deep to right-center for a three-run homer, his 16th this season and first in July. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Sain launched his league-best 25th homerun, a two-run shot to left. Novinsky finally slammed the door, retiring Gerber on a ground ball to third and Barfield on a fly ball to right to end the game.

Novinsky (7-0) blew his first save in 13 chances but picked up his seventh win, allowing three runs on four hits and two walks with one strikeout over two frames. Spiehs (4-3) suffered his fourth loss, permitting three runs on four hits and one walk while fanning three over two innings.

Stars lefty Ryan Costello (5-3, 4.34) meets Barons left-hander Ryan Meaux (4-7, 4.67) in the opener of a four-game series on Friday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game Show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

DESPARATE FOR A DUBYA

in one of the most exciting games of the year, it came down to Brad Nelson, who hadn't hit a home run since June 26 facing a Mobile reliever who hadn't given up a run, let alone a home run, in 12 2/3 innings in his 11 relief appearances vs. the Stars....... It's the top of the 10th, and the Stars, 17-27 on the road, are trying to avoid a four-game sweep.

The Stars had an 8-4 lead but were in serious danger of losing it to a very explosive team........ But Huntsville was a perfect 36-0 when they led after eight innings, and their closer, John Novinsky was in to preserve a thin 8-7 lead........ Novinsky had not failed to save a game in his 12 opportunities........ This was not a game that could be predicted by the numbers, however........ Mobile starter Clay Hensley, in three previous starts, had held the Stars to a .217 average, and was 2-0 with a 2.37 ERA coming in......... Hensley was pounded for 11 hits tonight and was down 6-4 when he left...... Novinsky, like Spiehs, was throwing goose-eggs against his opponent this year....... He had four saves against Mobile. On the season, in 42 1/3 innings, striking out 46 and walking just nine........ In stepped Greg Sain, hitting .209 vs. Stars pitching this year, but with five HRs and 16 RBIs........ Sain swung and missed Novinsky's first pitch, a high fast ball, then Novinsky tried to jam him with a breaking ball, but he swung and the ball parachuted perfectly into shallow right field, dribbling into the bullpen........ No one had a chance, and Sain had a leadoff double........ Expecting a bunt, Joe Gerber drove Novinsky's first pitch deep to left past Brad Nelson and off the wall, scoring the tying run........ Josh Barfield, with seven home runs against the Stars this season, was walked intentionally, but then Ronnie Merrill bluffed a bunt drawing the infield and swung instead. Novinsky took the ball, but no one was there to cover first. Rickie Weeks fell for the trap and was late coming over there....... The bases were loaded. A hot test for Novinsky's cool.

Steve Morales fouled off a couple of pitches to give Novinsky an 0-2 start, then missed on an outside fast ball....... 1-and-2....... He fouled off a high fast ball, then a checked swing. Did he get him?........ Yes, he did!...... But there was still only one out and the Stars were one bleeder, one fly ball, from losing this ballgame, and this series......... It would be a huge lift if they could go up the road to Birmingham with a morale-booster.

The Stars were playing double play depth in the middle against Jason Clements, who came in as a pinch-hitter, and was now in left........ Clements hit an 0-1 chopper to Chris Barnwell. Barney came to the plate to get the force out, but there was no chance for Kade Johnson to get the DP, so he didn't even try........ Now the Stars could breathe a little easier, but the bases were still loaded......... Kennard Jones is next. He singled in a run in Mobile's three-run 2nd inning that put the Bay Bears ahead, 4-1, but was hitting .214 against the Stars coming into this game........ You could play this one by the numbers this time........ Jones hit a fastball to Tony Gwynn Jr. in left-center to end the inning........ Novinsky loses the save, but with the bases full and no one out, saves the ballgame.

R.D. Spiehs had thrown a harmless 9th, and was back to keep the Stars at bey in this mad, free-swinging ballgame....... When anything goes, anything usually does........ Weeks struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch that came in on his hands. Gwynn, who finished 4-for-17 in this series, but is hitting .320 this month, rocketed an 0-1 pitch down the right field line. Gwynn slid into second with a double........ Prince Fielder was next. He had hit a gargantuan home run in the 6th inning, one that not only cleared the scoreboard, but the Budweiser sign on top as well, a shot estimated at better than 450 feet. 3-for-4 already in this game, he was walked intentionally, setting up the double play, a strategy that rarely works, according to a recent excerpt from "The Numbers Game" by Alan Schwartz, a book dealing with the history of baseball statistics....... More often than not, it postulates, it backfires. Double plays just don't happen often enough. But if Spiehs was trying to avoid one dangerous hitter to get to a less dangerous one, he was wrong there too........ Brad Nelson, on pace with Fielder in HRs and RBIs all season, rocketed an 0-2 pitch foul, took a pitch way outside, then hit a high drive to right-center field -- a three-run HR that put the Stars on top again, 11-8.

Chris Barnwell followed with a double and went to third on a passed ball, but Ryan Knox lined out to right and Ozzie Chavez struck out swinging to end the inning........ Novinsky went back to work with a new lead........ He had not thrown more than an inning and 2/3 since June 12 when he threw two innings vs. Tennessee and he had to face Mobile's two most dangerous hitters --- Greg Sain and Josh Barfield, a combined 12 HRs and 32 RBIs in 135 at-bats.

With the bench empty, manager Gary Jones went to All-Star pitcher Chris Rojas to pinch-hit....... Rojas was scheduled to be this night's starter, but was bumped in favor of Hensley....... Who knows? Maybe Jones knew of Rojas's 2-6, 5.68 career record vs. Huntsville. If he saw anything, however, he saw his 6.89 ERA vs. the Stars in three previous starts this season......... Rojas grounded out to Weeks, but then Ben Johnson walked on a close 3-2 pitch........ Novinsky went to 2-2 on Sain, fouled off a couple of pitches, then went down and away for ball three....... Sain, the league's home run leader, then drove Novinsky's next pitch high and deep to left field over Ryan Knox's leap against the wall........ Sain now has six HRs and 18 RBIs against the Stars........It was now 11-10........ Next up, Joe Gerber and Barfield.

Barnwell charged in on Joe Gerber's 0-1 nubber to the left side. Barnwell made an incredible play, picking up the ball by the bag, then throwing in one motion off-balance to nail Gerber for the second out......... Barfield then ended the game when he poked a ball to Nelson in left field.

Novinsky had his 7th win of the season, which strangely, leads the entire staff....... It's July 23rd, and no starter has more than five victories. Hot and cold Ryan Costello will go for his 6th, Friday, vs. Birmingham's Ryan Meaux (1-0, 2.25 in two starts vs. Huntsville)........ No Stars team has finished the season with no-better than a nine-game winner since 1997, when Jamey Price, Chris Nelson, and Bill King, led the team. Additionally, it's the fewest number of wins by a club leader in pitching victories, and that record seems to be threatened this year.

The 10 runs scored by Mobile tonight was the most scored by a Stars opponent in a Stars victory since August 26, 1999 when they beat Chattanooga, 14-11............ Barnwell had his first four-hit game in his two seasons with the Huntsville Stars. He's hitting .328 in July. The first six batters in the Stars order tonight are all smashing the ball at better than a .300 clip this month: Rickie Weeks is hitting .324 for July, Tony Gwynn, Jr., .320, Prince Fielder, .349 with 15 RBIs, Brad Nelson, .303 with 15 RBIs, and Ryan Knox, .360. Knox seems to be recovering nicely from his recent injuries. He's on a seven-game hitting streak, and he hit his first home run since June 19. He went 6-for-12 in the Mobile series .......... The Stars, oddly enough, are 5-3 when their opponents hit two or more home runs in a game........ Jamie Gann has cooled off. He's batting .231 in his last eight games......... Mike Jones is now going to seek a second opinion before deciding whether or not to have surgery or work out his problems in rehab.

The High Desert Mavericks sent Greg Bruso to the hill Thursday night. He took the 7-5 loss to Lancaster, going five innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. Bruso is now 0-2. Bruso started the season on the Stars' disabled list after going 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA for the Stars in two starts last year, and pitching Game 5 of the Southern League Championship Series......... The Chicago White Sox signed Dionys Cesar and assigned him to their Triple-A farm team at Charlotte........ Jace Brewer became the first Southern League hitter since Kevin Barker on July 31, 2001 to get six hits in a game, as Montgomery demolished the Tennessee Smokies, 18-6 Thursday night.

Beloit Game Summary from the Cedar Rapids' site:

Beloit sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning to beat the Kernels, 4-2, Thursday afternoon before a crowd of 3,661 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The loss was the third straight for the Kernels (13-14, 55-41 overall), who close out the four-game series with Beloit (13-14, 51-46) on Friday night.

The Kernels spotted Beloit a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

The Kernels, who had been shutout the two previous games by Beloit, finally broke through in the second inning when Matt Brown cracked his 18th home run and his seventh in 10 games against Snappers pitching.

Michael Collins? two-out RBI single in the fourth inning brought home Matt Pali from second base and gave the Kernels the lead, 2-1.

Beloit strung together four of its seven hits in the eighth inning. Three came off Jesse Smith (3-4). Carlos Corporan?s single tied the game. Josh Murray?s single off Bob Zimmermann put the Snappers ahead, 3-2, and a sacrifice fly by Guilder Rodriguez added an insurance run.

Kernels starter Nic Touchstone (5-4) held Beloit to three hits over six innings. He walked six and struck out four.

The Snappers had seven hits, none for extra bases. Beloit has out-hit the Kernels, 31-14, and outscored them, 19-2, in winning the first three games of the series.

Beloit?s Simon Beresford (3-1) allowed only two hits over four innings in relief of starter Greg Kloosterman and garnered the win. Ty Taubenheim pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his eighth save.

The game was scheduled to start at noon, but was delayed 51 minutes by rain.

Helena Independent Republic Game Story:

Brewers batter Raptors

By TOM COTTON - IR Sports Editor - 07/23/04

The Helena Brewers found the way to stop a frustrating two-game losing streak was with a big win.

The Brewers pounded Ogden 10-2 in a Pioneer League contest at Kindrick Legion Field on Thursday night. That win came on the heels of two losses by a total of four runs.

"The kids recognized the fact that they had to fight harder after two tough losses and they responded," Brewers manager Johnny Narron said.

The win moved Helena 1 1/2 games ahead of Billings with five games left in the first half of the Pioneer League season.

Helena pitchers Josh Wahpepah and Justin Barnes combined to yield just four hits and and strike out six Ogden batters.

"Wahpepah and Barnes gave us a chance to win tonight and that was huge," Narron said.

Barnes came in to relieve Wahpepah in the fifth inning. The right-hander threw smoke in his four-inning stint. He allowed just one hit, a triple by Corey Dunlap in the sixth in his outing.

Offensively the Brewers were led by third baseman Tony Festa, who has tormented the Raptors for the first two games of the series. He was 5-for-6 at the plate in the two games and he reached base nine straight times.

"The key thing is that I am seeing a lot of pitches and getting hitter's counts," Festa said. "I am able to see what the pitchers are throwing me."

Narron said that Festa has shown great patience at the plate.

"Festa has a good approach," he said. "He knows how to zone pitches and look at certain things," he said.

A hit by Festa started the scoring for the Brewers. The University of California-Riverside product hit a clean single with Steve Sollman sitting on second. The ball was misplayed by Ogden center fielder Ryan Russ and Sollman scooted home for the first run of the game.

Errors bothered the Raptors for the entire contest as they committed five miscues. Only six of Helena's 10 runs were earned.

The big inning for Helena came in the fifth. With the game tied at 2, the Brewers plated five runs. Grant Richardson had a two-RBI double in the inning and Festa also had an RBI double.

Alcides Escobar also had an RBI single for Helena and he would later score.

Helena would tack on three more runs in the seventh with RBI singles by Clay Blevins and Escobar.

Escobar and Blevins went 3-for-4 for Helena in the game.

The Brewers and Raptors will play the third game of their four-game set tonight. First pitch will be at 7:05 p.m. (8:05 Central).

Helena Game Log:

The Justin Barnes ratio watch now stands at 42 K's and three BB's in 29.2 IP; 17-year-old Alcides Escobar now 10-for-14 in SB attempts, I've begun the process of officially adopting the young man so as to reap the benefits of future contracts; 3B Tony Festa belongs in High Desert in 2005, but so does Beloit's Adam Heether...

When can I get a T-shirt with the new Graphic??

Square, what's the latest on the Brewerfan store, since MLB's kibosh on it?

It's our belief that Jim Powell's Link Report T-shirt (worn often and proudly http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ), obtained before the store was placed on hiatus, is the only one currently roaming the face of the planet.
