And the Snappers lose it in the bottom of the 9th. The winning run was scored on an RBI single. Beresford gets the loss.

Final: Wisconsin (Mariners) 3, Beloit 2

Beloit Game Summary from the Timber Rattlers' Site:

Chris Colton's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a 3-2 win over the Beloit Snappers Monday afternoon. Jason Mackintosh pitched eight innings for the Rattlers, but got a no decision when he allowed a game tying home run in the top of the ninth inning.

Wladimir Balentien put the first runs on the board with a two run homer to left-center in the fifth inning and the Rattlers led 2-0.

Adam Heether started the top of the seventh with a solo homer to draw Beloit (54-47 overall, 16-15 second half) to within 2-1. The Snappers put runners at first and second with no outs in the seventh, but Mackintosh got out of the innning with a strikeout and a double play.

Mackintosh gave up a home run to Vinny Rottino to start the ninth inning and the game was tied at 2-2. Mike Hrynio came out of the bullpen and retired the next three batters.

Wisconsin (44-56, 13-18) started their winning rally on a lead-off single by Eric Blakeley. He moved to second on a grounder. Snapper reliever Tim Dillard came on in relief of Simon Beresford to face Colton. On the first pitch of the at bat, Colton chopped a single through the left side of the infield and Blakeley beat Rottino's throw to the plate with a headfirst dive to score the winning run.

The Rattlers and Snappers conclude their four game series on Tuesday night. Nibaldo Acosta (6-10, 3.99ERA) will be the starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Brian Montalbo (5-5, 4.73ERA) is scheduled to start for Beloit. Game time is 7:05 pm.

Miscellaneous updates from David Weiser in Huntsville coming off last night's rainout:

The long-awaited removal of the upper deck seats began Monday, starting with Section HH, directly behind home plate. Those seats are all gone, but as of this posting, it's the only section that's been removed so far........ The upper deck seating is as old as the ballpark itself and many of those seats are so broken, they cannot be sat in. Some are totally unusable and some are an amalgamation of what used to be the former lower deck seating, which was blue...... They are easy to tell since the upper deck seats were red........ Workers also have been putting fresh blacktop on the concourse as you enter the stadium. The third base side is done and now the first base side, the visitors side, is nearly finished.

With the move of the G'Braves to Mississippi, how will the Southern League realign itself after this season is over? During the Southern League All-Star break, the issue was discussed and SL President Don Mincher believes the chances are close to 100% that the league will divide North and South, with Huntsville losing every one of its Alabama rivals in a new alignment....... The Stars will be in a Northern Division with West Tennessee, Tennessee, Chattanooga, and Carolina -- its longest road trip....... Unless the league returns to a balanced schedule, this can't possibly work to the Stars advantage, unless an unbalanced schedule gives them more dates with Birmingham and Montgomery than with Carolina....... Whatever needs to be worked out, will wait until close to the end of the season.

This deal flew under my radar, so I'll share it here........ The Seattle Mariners traded outfielder Cristian Guerrero to the Anaheim Angels for minor league pitcher Austin Bilke....... Guerrero hit .224 for the San Antonio Missions this year with 8 HRs and 23 RBIs, not much better than his two-year impact with the Huntsville Stars. He hit .223 in his first season with the Stars -- 2002 -- and .195 in 32 games last year before being demoted to High Desert and ultimately waived.

From The Sports Network

INDIANAPOLIS INDIANS - The Indians' victory on July 24th snapped a season long 13-game losing streak, but not before the team dropped six games, placing them in last place of the International League West Division with a 43-58 mark. Corey Hart collected seven hits, four runs, one long ball and four RBI for the Indians this past week, while Jeff Liefer went just 4-for-22 with four runs, two homers and five RBI. Liefer is struggling in the month of July, posting a .174 batting average, which is much worse than his .273 average he recorded in June. Chris Coste tallied seven hits for Indianapolis this past week, while Luis Figueroa went 8-for-24 at the plate. Travis Phelps was the first pitcher to win a game for the Indians since July 9th. In that outing against Richmond, Phelps allowed three runs on four hits in six innings of work. After going 0-2 with a 6.00 in the month of June, Phelps has settled down in July to post a 2-1 record with a 3.05 ERA.

HUNTSVILLE STARS - The Stars dropped four of their six contests this past week to fall to 16-12 in the second half of the season. The 16-12 mark places the Stars in a tie for the top spot with Birmingham in the West Division of the Southern League. Rickie Weeks collected five hits and scored three runs for the Stars this past week, while Brad Nelson also tallied five hits at the plate. After batting just .225 in the month of June, Weeks has stepped up his performance at the plate in July, posting a .311 average. Anthony Gwynn was 5- for-25 at the plate for Huntsville and fellow teammate Prince Fielder went 7- for-21 with one home run and three RBI. Ryan Costello recorded his second straight victory on July 23rd. In that victory against Birmingham Costello was literally untouchable, as he tossed six hitless innings of baseball. In his last two starts the young hurler has tossed 15 innings, scattering just three hits, while striking out 16 batters. Because of his incredible performance last week, Costello was named Pitcher of the Week in the Southern League.

HIGH DESERT MAVERICKS - The Mavericks dropped five of seven contests this past week, lowering their second half record to 10-20 on the season. The horrid record places the squad in last place in the South Division of the California League. Travis Hinton continues to be the offensive spark plug for the club. In the past week, Hinton was 6-for-28 with five runs, three doubles and five RBI. Second Baseman Callix Crabbe tallied 10 hits, seven runs, two home runs and five RBI in 26 at-bats for the Mavericks. Kennard Bibbs also collected 10 hits this past week and swiped three bags, giving him a total of 29 on the year. As for the pitching staff, Bo Hall was defeated on July 22nd giving him his fourth loss in his last seven starts. Against Lancaster the young hurler allowed five runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. Hall has been terrible at home this season, going just 1-6 with an ERA of 8.61.

BELOIT SNAPPERS - The Beloit Snappers were victorious in six of their seven contests this past week, raising their second half record to 16-14. That mark is good enough for third place in the West Division in the Midwest League. Vinny Rottino collected 10 hits, scored four runs, hit one long ball and drove in 11 runs in 28 at-bats. Adam Heether currently has a nine-game hitting streak for Beloit. During that span, Heether is 13-for-38 with eight runs scored, five doubles, one long ball and four RBI. Terry Trofholz went 11- for-32 with seven runs and four doubles at the plate this past week. Greg Moreira defeated Wisconsin on July 24th for his seventh victory of the season. In that outing, Moreira allowed just two runs on four hits in six innings of work to bring his season mark to 7-4.

HELENA BREWERS - The Brewers split eight games this past week to bring their overall record to 20-16 on the season. The mark is good for second place in the North Division of the Pioneer League. Grant Richardson was productive at the plate this week, going 13-for-36 with three runs, five double, a home run and five RBI. Tony Festa also produced at the plate for the Brewers, going 12-for-28 with seven runs scored, one long ball and five RBI, while Steven Sollman also chipped in this past week by collecting 10 hits in 27 at-bats. Starting pitcher Alvaro Martinez took the mound on July 21st looking for his first win since June 29th, but he did not figure in the decision. In that contest, the young hurler allowed three runs on four hits in five innings of work. After going 2-0 with a 1.23 ERA in the month of June, Martinez has struggled terribly in July, posting an 0-3 mark with a 7.94 ERA.

Egads!!! No Iribarren, how are they supposed to score w/ him out of the line-up. Maybe he got called up to Milwaukee and Helms got sent all the way down to the rookie league http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif . Yeah interesting to see Parillo take the loss not even give up a hit in 4 inn.

I know the Helena box score hasn't been posted yet, but when scanning the stats for all of our minor leaguers I noticed Hasan Rasheed is sitting on 18 games & 61 ABs. I checked the last few link reports & didn't see his name in the box, so I went back in the transactions thread & didn't see his name listed there either. I know there is somewhat of a roster crunch in Helena regarding their OF, but I doubt they would sit a player that was hitting .344/.459/.492, basically picking up where he left off after a great season at Lake City CC. I'm guessing this is one of those unreported injury situations, but I'd appreciate any info on him if someone knows more than I do, or if I just missed something that has been shared about him over the last several weeks. Thanks in advance.

***I just checked Helena's box score, and still no sign of Rasheed. I did see that Edwin Walker logged a couple of innings today, as it's good to see his name in the box score again (wasn't he injured briefly?). Wooley with a good game as the Brewers win, Festa with another couple of walks, the man is a walking machine. Steve Sollmann's numbers continue to slide a little bit.

Rasheed hurt his hand sliding into a base earlier this month and left the game. I'm pretty sure he hasn't played since then, but I could be wrong.

That's the last Google News result for him, so I would guess that's the most likely reason for his absence. No idea what the extent of his injury is, though.

Final: Helena 4, Provo (Angels) 2

Brewers still need some help Tuesday in order to gain a first-half playoff spot...

Helena Independent Republic Game Story:

Brewers win, thaaaa brewers win

By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer

The Helena Brewers got their second 4-2 win in two nights over the Provo Angels, and once again strong pitching was the key.

Robbie Wooley, who took the mound in the fifth, pitched the last five innings of the game, and gave up only two hits and no runs.

"I can't say enough about the pitching tonight," said Helena manager Johnny Narron. "Wooley came in and those guys didn't know which way to turn."

The Helena pitcher only gave up one walk and struck out three.

Alvaro Martinez started the game on the mound, and Edwin Walker came in for two innings in the third, allowing one hit and no walks.

The Brewers defense was also solid.

"Defensively we've been playing some great games," said the Helena skipper. "Alcides Escobar was covering ground left and right."

The 17-year-old shortstop made several plays in the game, including a diving stop in the seventh, which he fired off his knees to get Mike Perdomo out at first.

Escobar also turned a double play and ran down a ball to get the last out of the game.

At the plate, the Brewers only had seven hits, but the fourth inning saw four of those, allowing the Brewers to score three runs in the side.

Jake Serfass led the inning off with a stand-up double, and a bunt single from Charlie Fermaint moved him to third.

Catcher Alberto Segura stepped to the plate and sent a 2-2 pitch from Provo pitcher Jason Cox down the left field line, scoring Serfass and Fermaint on an RBI-double.

Escobar hit a sacrifice bunt to move Segura to third, and Gilberto Acosta chopped a single over the third baseman to move him across the plate.

"It was good because we've had a problem lately getting the hits we need with runners on second and third," said Narron.

The team didn't score in the rest of the game, but it was enough for the win.

Segura hit 2-for-3 with two RBI and Acosta was 2-for-4.

Helena leads the Angels 2-0 in their three game series, and the two teams will play tonight to end the first half of the season.

Helena will throw starter Justin Barnes (3-0, 2.43) and the Angels will give the nod to Fernando Rodriguez (1-1, 5.25). The game will start at 7:05 p.m (8:05 Central).

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

H.D. puts emphatic end to skid

Mavs pound out season-high in hits while ending a five-game losing streak

By MARK A. PEINADO/Staff Writer

SAN BERNARDINO ? While nothing is ever a certainty when it comes to predicting High Desert Maverick victories, one could have reasonably assumed the Mavs were going to stop their five-game losing streak after the top half of the first inning.

High Desert had given starter Bo Hall a six-run cushion against a team he has dominated. Hall, in three starts against Inland Empire held a record of 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA. In 18 innings, he had allowed the 66ers just six earned runs.

With a big lead in his back pocket, even Hall had a bad night. He wasn't alone. Both starters were gone by the fourth inning, a run was scored in nearly every inning and the Mavs' six-run lead, was almost gone by the fifth.

But Mario Mendez and Callix Crabbe made sure the losing streak would grown no more. Mendez went 4-for-5 with four RBIs including a three-run homer and Crabbe made two spectacular defensive plays to lead High Desert to a 15-8 win over Inland Empire at Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Monday night.

The victory snapped the Mavericks' five-game losing streak and ended Inland Empire's four-game win streak.

With the game still in doubt in the top of the seventh inning, Mendez's three-run home run provided the Mavericks' bullpen with the necessary cushion to put away a pesky Inland Empire club.

His eighth homer of the season gave High Desert a 15-8 lead, their largest of the game. The bullpen then did its job. In the final three innings, Mavs' relievers David Nolasco and Nick Slack combined to shut down the 66ers' offense. Slack struck out the side in the ninth.

Crabbe helped the Mavericks cause with his glove. With High Desert leading 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Rene Rivera came to the plate. With one on and no one out, Rivera lined a Reggie Rivard pitch up the middle. The High Desert second baseman ranged to his right, snagged the ball and flipped it to shortstop Enrique Cruz. Cruz stepped on the bag and threw Rivera out at first for a double play.

Showing he can also range to his left, Crabbe took away a hit from Jesus Guzman in the bottom of the sixth. It was a key play because the next two 66er hitters reached on a single and a double. Inland Empire managed two runs in the inning to close within 12-8 but if it weren't for Crabbe's defensive play, things could have gone bad for High Desert.

Crabbe also ignited the Mavericks' six-run first inning. With one out, he doubled off Greg Wear. Ben Van Iderstine followed with a single and Travis Hinton doubled. John Vanden Berg grounded out but Iderstine scored on the play. Then it was a singles parade as Jeff Eure, Troy Farnsworth, Mendez and Cruz all reached on singles to give Hall a 6-0 lead without having thrown a pitch.

Seven different Mavericks had multiple hits. Mendez led the attack with four. Farnsworth, Hinton and Kennard Bibbs had three hits. Crabbe, Cruz and Van Iderstine had two hits. Both Froilan Villanueva and Van Iderstine extended their hitting streaks. Villanueva is at 11 games while Van Iderstine is at eight. Van Iderstine has seven multi-hit games in his last eight games.

The Mavericks pounded out 21 hits which surpassed their season-high of 20 that was accomplished last Tuesday in a 17-1 victory over Lancaster. Only catcher Vanden Berg didn't reach base. He left after the third inning after his right hand was hit with a foul pitch behind the plate The 15 runs were the most scored against the 66ers this year and the six-run first inning was also the most runs given up by Inland Empire. The teams combined for 14 extra-base hits.

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

GAME SUMMARY:

The Indians? bullpen came undone Monday night as Norfolk battled back to defeat the Tribe, 6-3.

Aaron Heilman, Logansport, Ind. native and Notre Dame product, shut out the Indians for the first five innings, before he ran into control problems in the sixth inning. Heilman (5-8) walked in two Indians runs, but was able to minimize the damage after that by allowing just one more run in the frame.

Meantime, Tribe starter Wes Obermueller threw five solid innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five. Obermueller gave way to newly aquired free agent pitcher Gary Glover in the seventh inning.

Glover (0-1) promptly walked the first hitter he faced, Justin Huber, then gave up two runs in the frame. Tribe reliever Dan Reichert, who entered the game in the eighth, was also victimized for two runs.

The Tides received outstanding middle relief from Vic Darensbourg who pitched the eighth inning and struck out the side.

Heath Bell picked up his ninth save for the Tides, who improve to 47-52. Indianapolis falls to 43-59.

QUOTES:

Justin Huber, Norfolk Tides catcher on a walk that resulted in the winning run:

?I was looking for a good pitch to hit all night,? said Huber. ?I didn?t get much to hit against Glover, but it resulted in a walk. That was good for us to get the inning started. It was great to score. I want to keep this going. It was fun to play against another Aussie (Trent Durrington) tonight.?

NOTES:

Sunday?s game, postponed due to rain, will be picked up in Indianapolis as part of a doubleheader on Sunday, August 15 at Victory Field. Opening pitch will be 2:00 p.m.

The Brewers have aquired Russell Branyan from Triple-A Buffalo and have designated outfielder Chris Magruder for assignment to Indianapolis. Magruder has 72 hours to report to the Tribe.
