It'll be interesting to see his July totals.

So far this month, Enrique is hitting .277 w/ a .815 OPS. He's hit 5 HRs and driven in 17. He has 20 strikeouts compared to 6 walks.

That 2 HR, 7 RBI game really padded his stats.

Wow Alcides Escobar is doing pretty good for such a young kid. Could see him in Beliot next year. Would like to see more power from Al but I like the 11 walks so far. He doesn't seem to be a free-swinger. Has anyone heard how his defense is? We need someone to get a picture of him soon.

Helena Independent Republic Game Story:

Brewers piching strong in win

By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer

When a ball club's pitching is on point, everything else falls into place.

This was apparent at Kindrick Legion Field on Sunday, where the Brewers' pitching staff helped the Helena club beat Provo 4-2.

Despite the win, the Brewers remain 1/2 game back of Billings in the Pioneer League Northern Division. The Mustangs downed Casper 8-4 Sunday.

"Derek DeCarlo and Jared Theodorakos made the difference today," said Helena skipper Johnny Narron. "They threw a great game."

DeCarlo, who picked up his third win of the year, came in for Theodorakos in the fourth inning, and finished the game out, allowing only one hit and one walk.

"Anytime you can hold a team that hits as well as these guys do to five hits and two runs, you're doing your job."

Theodorakos, who started on the mound, allowed only four hits and two walks.

The two runs the Angels scored in the game came in the third and fourth innings.

In the third, Clifton Remole doubled, and scored on an RBI-single from Mike Perdomo.

Perdomo was the only Provo player to tally more than one hit. He was 2-for-4 in the game.

In the fourth, the Angels put another digit on the scoreboard when Nate Sutton singled and stole second, and J.R. Renz hit a double to left to score him.

Helena only had two more hits than the Angels did, but they connected with the ones they needed.

"We did some great situational hitting," said Narron. "Especially Sollman. He hit exactly like we asked him."

Second baseman Steve Sollman led the Brewers at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.

In the third, Sollman helped Helena put three runs on the board. With Alcides Escobar and Clay Blevins on base, he hit a ground-rule double to straightaway centerfield, and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Grant Richardson.

"We wanted him to hit it in the air and deep," said Narron. "He did a great job."

Sollman also hit an RBI-single in the seventh for Helena's only other run.

The two teams will play again tonight and tomorrow at 7:05, finishing out the first half of the season.

Tonight the Brewers look to Alvaro Martinez (2-3), and Provo will pitch Anthony Whittington (0-0).

Hey Jim you said yesterday that Beloit didn't have to win the second half title to make the playoofs as long as Kane County did. But doesn't the extra playoff spot go to the team with the second best record in both halves then and not the runner up in the second half?

High Desert Site Game Summary:

A two-run double by Inland Empire 66er catcher Rene Rivera was pivotal in vaulting the Sixty Sixers to a 10-8 13-inning victory over the High Desert Mavericks before 1,283 at Mavericks Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Rivera had been mired in a horrific slump, in which the highly-touted catcher was three for his last 38. But with two runners on base, Rivera ripped a two-run two-bagger into the fun zone off reliever David Nolasco, scoring Carlos Arroyo and Matt Rogelstad.

Melvin Pizarro came on in the bottom of the inning to retire the Mavericks in order for his sixth save on the season.

The extra-inning affair, which is the longest game High Desert has played this year innings-wise, was preceded by a wild eighth inning. Inland Empire (16-14, 55-45) scored three to take an 8-5 lead, propelled by an Erick Monzon solo homer, and back-to-back RBI singles by Arroyo and Matt Rogelstad.

High Desert (10-20, 35-65), who now drops their fifth game in a row, struck back in the bottom of the inning with two home runs. Froilan Villanueva, who extended his season-high hitting streak to 10 games with a single in the first, drilled a one-out solo dinger to left for his 10th homer of the season, drawing the Mavs within two.

After Jeff Eure reached on an infield bunt single, Mario Mendez knotted the game up at eight apiece with an opposite-field two-run blast, his seventh round tripper of the year.

Both teams began the game with a feverish offensive pace, combining for nine runs in the first two innings. Inland Empire jetted out to a 3-0 lead in the first off David Bradley, before the Mavs came back with two in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Travis Hinton and Villanueva?s single, enabling Hinton to score on a fielding error by left fielder Jon Nelson.

Michael Garciaparra put Inland Empire up 5-2 in the second with a three-run bomb off Bradley, the first homer of the year for the brother of Red Sox shortstop Nomar Garciaparra, and only his third professional home run.

The Mavs made it 5-4 in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Kennard Bibbs and Ben Van Iderstine, and tied it at 5-5 when Callix Crabbe grounded into a double play, but enabling Enrique Cruz to score from third with two out.

Cesar Jimenez (5-5) got the win, evening his record on the year by styming the Mavericks with four scoreless innings of relief in the ninth through 12th inning. Nolasco (2-6) took the loss, while Melvin Pizarro picked up his sixth save.

is it me or are you claiming every hit off Rogers is an infield hit. He gave up 3 hits yesterday incl an earned run, and its hard to imagine none of those balls made it out of the infield considering the run was scored as earned.

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Mel Queen not pleased with RHP David Nolasco...

66ers complete second sweep of Mavs

High Desert rallies back but falls in extra frames

By MARK A. PEINADO/Staff Writer

ADELANTO ? Rene Rivera had been hitless in five at-bats. The Inland Empire catcher had been mired in a slump when it came to runners in scoring position.

Going into his at-bat in the top of the 13th inning, Rivera was 0-for-2 and had stranded four base runners. Coming into the game, he was 11-for-62 and had only driven in 13.

So when the count reached 3-1, Rivera left no doubt. He hammered a David Nolasco pitch to the deepest part of Mavericks Stadium. While the ball didn't leave the park, the damage was done. Rivera's two-run double lifted the 66ers to a 10-8 victory and their second sweep of the Mavericks this season.

"It looked like there wasn't a home plate out there," High Desert manager Mel Queen said. "(Nolasco) hits the first guy. Jeff (Eure) makes a good play on a bunt, that should have picked him up psychologically. He walks the next guy then goes 3-1 on the next guy, a double. ... He probably threw about two strikes the whole inning.

"You can't be a pitcher and do that. You have to be able to throw strikes. If they hit you, they hit you."

Up until the 13th inning, both bullpens pitched well.

High Desert's Homero Rivera pitched the 10th, 11th and 12th innings. He allowed only one hit and struck out one but not to be outdone, the 66ers' Cesar Jimenez was even more effective.

Jimenez went 4 1-3 innings for Inland Empire allowing only one hit and striking out four.

"He was outstanding," Queen said. "He got us out. I know we didn't have very good swings at him. I know we were too anxious a couple of times, swinging at first pitches."

The Mavericks were behind on the scoreboard throughout the game. But Inland Empire starter Bobby Livingston was unable to hold onto the lead.

With the Mavs down 5-4, Livingston's throwing error into centerfield on a Kennard Bibbs' sacrifice allowed Enrique Cruz to reach third with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Callix Crabbe hit into a double play but Cruz was able to score and tie the game.

The 66ers rallied for three runs in the top of the eighth inning as Erick Monzon led off the inning with a solo home run off Mavs reliever Dan Kolb. Inland Empire added two more runs and it appeared Livingston was going to escape with a win.

But High Desert rallied for a fourth time in the game.

With one out, Froilan Villanueva crushed a Livingston pitch off the center field scoreboard to narrow the gap to two runs. Mike Steele relieved Livingston and wasn't effective.

Eure greeted Steele with a surprise bunt single. Troy Farnsworth struck out but Mario Mendez didn't let the 66ers reliever off the hook. He powered a Steele pitch the opposite way sending it over the right field fence to tie the game up at 8-8 and get Kolb off the hook.

"Yeah, that gave us a chance to win it," Queen said. "When you have the opportunity, you have to take advantage of it. That's why your record is 10-20 in the second half."

The Mavericks have now lost five straight after a promising start to the seven-game homestand in which they won the first two games. Inland Empire has won four in a row. The 66ers' sweep is the second for them against the Mavericks. In May, Inland Empire swept a four-game set from the Mavs at San Bernardino.

It just so happens the Mavericks travel to Inland Empire today for another four-game series.

NOTES: Villanueva with his double in the first inning, extended his hitting streak to 10 games. ... Ben Van Iderstine has a seven-game hitting streak after his two-out RBI single in the bottom of the second. ... The 66ers' Gary Harris broke the club record for triples in the season with his 14th in the top of the 12th inning. ... Inland Empire's Michael Garciaparra, younger brother of Boston's Nomar Garciaparra, reached base five times going 2-for-4 with a walk and getting hit twice. He had three RBIs and three runs scored.

Just saying what few hits have been given up have been either broken bat hits that fell in or balls hit thru the infield. There probably has been a ball hit to the outfield I'm sure but all in all he is not being hit hard and is satisfied with his performance.
