24-year-old RHP Jeff Garner, the Central Michigan University product who was signed from the independent ranks earlier this spring, has been moved from the Arizona to the Helena roster and is starting tonight for the banged-up H-Brewers staff. Garner had been very successful in 15 IP (1.09 WHIP) against Arizona batters, as expected.

73-year-old Chuck Smith (Chuck Smith!) four-hits the Tribe, nary a walk -- a franchise record 11th straight defeat -- embarassing...

Wow. I saw Chuck E. Smith play in the Quad Cities in 1993 as a member of the then Houston-affiliated River Bandits. He wasn't very good, but he was only 23 and a fan favorite... I got like 10 of his autographs, including one on the Quad City River Bandits hat that I still own to this day. He signs his name with a flamboyant "Chuck E. Smith" script and is (well, was... that was a long time ago) a very funny dude. That was the year of "The Flood" that rendered the Bandits' beautiful John O'Donnel Stadium useless, so they played at a local high school field (could have been college... it was tiny, regardless).

Anyway, I felt like sharing that for some reason. It's hard to believe that Chuck E. is still around and playing ball... I hope he's still as cool a guy as he was back in the day.

No more picking on the Tribe tonight other than to say box score and game log on consecutive loss # 12 soon...

I don't have any cool "I remember him" stories about game two. Instead, I'll just add that Hernan Iribarren is the opposite of this Indy club. And that's not a compliment for the Indians.

What is the state of the affiliation agreement between Indy and Milwaukee? Because they sure aint gonna be happy campers down there. Over the years I get the feeling they would much rather be a Yankee affiliate, and play with a bunch of older guys, and pick up titles.

Mind you, we did that for them one year. But it was kind of hollow, I guess, as it did nothing for the MLB club.

Big lefty Dana Eveland -- wow...

Eveland has been consistent all year long, and while I haven't seen him pitch, it's been a pleasure to watch the box scores this season. By innings pitched alone, this has got to be his most impressive performance. How many bad outings has he had this season? 2, maybe 3? Props and a tip of my cap to Dana & his family (you know who you are http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ).

It's not a good relationship from what we've heard. The Indians were complaining last year and again this spring, and their recent & consistent tumble obviously can't help things. The contract expires after this year, and you have to believe the Brewers might just have a new AAA affiliate next year, unless the Indians are enamored with the idea of Hardy, Weeks, Nelson & Fielder at AAA for next year. On the flip side, that might be more than enough to keep them around for another year. If I were the Indians signing the contract, I would be awfully hard-pressed not to sign that deal, even if 2006 looked bleak.

Final: Arizona Brewers 2, Arizona Angels 1, 11 innings

Just one walk allowed -- what an awesome pitching performance by the four kids involved, none of them yet 20 years old, including 2nd round RHP Yovani Gallardo; neither Brewer run was driven in, so hardly an offensive show; only one hit (and one walk) for Hernan Iribarren? Must be a misprint...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

How about some props to Gord Ash and Dick Groch (Toronto connection) and the pro scouting staff for tabbing the just-turned 25-year-old Ryan Costello in the minor league phase of last December's Rule 5 draft?

After a rousing show, the encore can often be an anti-climax. Stars lefty Ryan Costello had his work cut out for him after the three-hit, 11-strikeout masterpiece he threw July 18 against Montgomery. On Friday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium, in the growing heat of a pennant chase, Costello was even better, tossing six no-hit innings in Huntsville?s 4-1 win over Birmingham before 6369 vocal Barons fans at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Huntsville (16-11, 48-49) took sole possession of first place in the Southern League West second-half standings, one in front of the Barons (15-12, 50-46).

Costello (6-3) tossed six hitless frames and was removed after throwing 94 pitches with a 3-0 lead. Costello, earlier Friday chosen the BC Powder Southern League Pitcher of the Week for July 16-22, picked up his second straight win, allowing only four base runners on three walks and one hit batter. Costello fanned five on route to his sixth victory of the season.

?Costello threw outstanding, commanded the ball very well,? Stars pitching coach Fred Dabney said. ?He had to deal with a tight zone, didn?t get any borderline calls. That got his pitch count way up there. He had the best command he?s had the whole year. We could?ve extended him a little bit, but the zone was getting even tighter, so we thought we?d get him out of there.?

Huntsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Rickie Weeks? second-inning sacrifice fly, Tony Gwynn Jr.?s fifth-inning, run-scoring single and Ryan Knox?s RBI-double in the sixth. After the Barons broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the sixth on a double by Normand Martel, pinch-hitter Tommy Nicholson singled home Martel to make it 3-1. Brad Nelson?s eighth-inning single knocked in Prince Fielder for the game?s final run.

Ryan Meaux (4-8) suffered the loss, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits and one walk with six strikeouts over seven innings. Fernando Rijo and Paul Stewart combined with Costello to hold the Barons to just three hits for the game. Rijo recorded his second save, allowing one hit and fanning one in a scoreless ninth. Stewart tossed two innings, permitting one run on two hits with one strikeout.

Stars righty Dennis Sarfate (4-9, 5.12) meets Barons lefty Jim Bullard (7-3, 3.84) in game two of the series Saturday night at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Beloit Game Summary from the Cedar Rapids' Site:

Vinny Rottino had three hits and drove in four runs to fuel Beloit?s 5-1 win over the Kernels on Friday night, completing a sweep of the four-game series. The Midwest League game was played before a crowd of 3,822 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The loss was the fourth straight for the Kernels and dropped them into sixth place in the Western Division second-half race at 13-15. The Kernels are 55-42 overall. Beloit (14-14, 52-46) moved a game ahead of the Kernels.

Beloit outscored the Kernels, 24-3, in the series and out-hit them, 39-20. It was the first time the Kernels had been swept in a four-game series all season. The four straight losses also match a season high.

Beloit southpaw Dana Eveland (7-5) worked eight strong innings for the Snappers, scattering six hits, walking one and striking out eight. He was lifted after surrendering a lead-off double to Matt Pali in the Kernels? ninth. Ty Taubenheim came on and struck out Brandon Wood and Bobby Wilson, and got Baltazar Lopez on a fly ball to center to end the game.

Rottino?s two-out RBI single in the top of the first inning gave Beloit a 1-0 lead.

The Kernels tied the game, 1-1, in the second inning. Wilson singled, Lopez was hit by a pitch and Blake Balkcom?s single scored Wilson and moved Lopez to third base. The Kernels missed an opportunity to take the lead, though, when Matt Brown and Tommy Duenas struck out and Billy Boyer flied to right.

Eveland allowed only three singles over the next six innings, two of the infield variety.

Beloit reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning, sending eight men to the plate and scoring three runs. Steve Moss had an RBI single that put the Snappers ahead, 2-1. Rottino?s two-run single tacked on a pair of unearned runs and built Beloit?s margin to 4-1.

The Snappers added a run in the ninth on Rottino?s bases-loaded single. He trails Lansing?s Brian Dopirak in the RBI race, 85-82. Dopirak hit two home runs and drove in three runs in Lansing?s 7-1 win over South Bend.

unless the Indians are enamored with the idea of Hardy, Weeks, Nelson & Fielder at AAA for next year. On the flip side, that might be more than enough to keep them around for another year. If I were the Indians signing the contract, I would be awfully hard-pressed not to sign that deal, even if 2006 looked bleak.

I keep thinking that its a long time since I've seen a post from anyone who actually attends Indians games - maybe that is indication enough of how they feel.

Speaking from what I see of minor league fans here in Huntsville, most people attending the games couldn't care less if someone is touted as a prospect, they only care about how he and the team performs. So just because Prince etc are great prospects, doesn't mean they'll have Indy jumping at the chance to see them. A lot might depend on how good a showing they put up in the second half of the Southern League. Can they keep the team competitive? Does it look like they can make Indy competitive?

Even then, Indy were supposed to have a competitive team this year. Its down to bad fortune ( Hardy & Krynzel injuries etc.) that it didn't work out that way, but If the backbone of last years good SL team didn't give them success, why should they be optimistic about getting players from this years poorer performing side?

The removal of Knox (who I heard was popular) and Childers in the midst of their other woes is unlikely to have endeared Nicholls & Melvin to them. And if they heard the quote that Al was bandying about the other day - something to the effect of Melvin saying that he couldn't care less if Indy didn't win a game - they'll be even less impressed.

Milwaukee also simply isn't a glamorous affiliate. The Stars could easily double their attendance if they had the Braves as a partner. It doesn't matter that Milwaukee has a great farm system and the Braves' is terrible. People here are simply a lot more interested in the Braves than in Milwaukee. Most people don't read BA, their first interest is that night's promotion and after that, they want to be associated with a big name or success. When Cubs, Cards or Braves affiliates play in Huntsville, we get people here wearing that teams gear and cheering for them. I've never been at a ground where people turned up in Milwaukee gear cheering for the Stars.

So my guess is that if Indy can get another partner they'll jump at the chance. It would take a lot more than a few prospects (some of whom might move on quickly anyhow) to make Milwaukee their ideal partner. However finding another partner who wants to come to Indy mightn't be that easy. ML teams usually aren't in a big rush to move unless their present facilities are ininadequate for their training and development needs. A new Stadium is usually the thing that attracts them and I don't think Indy are in a position to offer that.

My constant fear is that Huntsville will lose out to a newer stadium. The second best thing about being a Milwaukee affiliate is that no-one is going to bust a gut to try and woo the Brewers away from us. (The best thing is of course Brewerfan)

At the end of the day, it will all come down to economics, can Indy get a better deal from anyone else? You see the flip side of the coin we usually talk about here is that most Minor League owners don't give a rats a** about development.

One additional thought is that, if Doug really is making that sort of quote about Indy, perhaps he already has thoughts of moving the AAA team elsewhere next year.
