This is from the Beloit Daily News story at the tail end of Thursday's Link Report. We'll mention it here:

(Carlos) Corporan is seeing steady action with starter Lou Palmisano having left the team temporarily. (Manager Don) Money said Palmisano returned to his home in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., ``for personal reasons,'' and is likely to be out of action another week.

Looking forward to the Cap'n's return. Whatever the reason he's rejoined his family, we wish Lou and the Palmisano's well. As with any situation such as this, we'll suggest that speculation not be made, other than to say it'll be nice when the Cap'n returns to the boxscores.

We'll give a Link Report sendoff to Ben Hendrickson in this, what will likely (and hopefully) be the last article written on him from a minor league perspective:

by Phil Leichner, Minor League Baseball Staff Writer

Picture this: Your first ever All-Star game and you're given the enviable task of starting the game. It wasn't too long ago that you were coming back from an elbow injury that sidelined you for two months in the 2003 season. For Indianapolis Indians pitcher Ben Hendrickson, it was quite an honor that he was given the nod to start this past week?s Triple-A All-Star Game in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Look at the numbers he has put up in the International League this season: an 8-2 record with an ERA of 2.27, good for first in the IL, and 74 strikeouts in 99 innings pitched. Taking the mound to start Wednesday night?s affair was the culmination of a brilliant first-half of the season in which the Eden Prairie, Minnesota native found his way to the Milwaukee Brewers starting rotation in early June.

After spending the 2003 season with Double-A Huntsville of the Southern League, Hendrickson began 2004 with Indianapolis. The 23-year-old got off to a solid start, posting a 3-0 record in the month of April. On April 22nd, he recorded seven strikeouts in 5.1 shutout innings in his second win of the year versus the Toledo Mud Hens. However, the following month Hendrickson did not experience the same type of success.

The right-handed hurler only registered one win in six starts and allowed a season high 10 hits against the Durham Bulls on the 23rd (his only win in the month). Hendrickson also endured one of his worst outings of the season in a contest versus the Pawtucket Red Sox. In five innings he allowed six earned runs on five hits and three walks. Despite the sub-par month, Hendrickson achieved one goal he had set for himself this season: a call up to the Milwaukee Brewers before they played the Minnesota Twins (his favorite team).

"My goal was to get called up before they (Brewers) played the Twins. But it was to stay up there for good, not just go up for one start," Hendrickson explained.

The one start came versus the Los Angeles Dodgers on June 2nd. Hendrickson was shaky in five innings as he allowed four earned runs on seven hits and two walks. He fanned two in the loss. Even though he didn't stay up until the Twins series, Hendrickson in part felt he accomplished his goal.

"In a way I met my goal but I really didn't. Now I'm just trying to get back up there and help the team win," he stated.

After his brief stint with the Brewers, Hendrickson found himself back with Indians and playing as well as he did in April. In his first two starts, he didn't allow a run and earned his fifth win of the season against the Charlotte Knights. Hendrickson yielded just two hits and struck out three in the game. He finished the month a perfect 3-0 in Minor League play. In addition, Hendrickson recorded the longest outing of his career. On the 29th, he tossed a complete game where he struck out nine and allowed one earned run on 109 pitches in a no-decision.

Even though the Brewers insist on a 100-pitch limit in all of his outings, Hendrickson carried 95-pitches into the ninth and was given the go-ahead to finish the game.

"They want to keep it within reason every time I go out on the mound (right at 100 pitches)," he explained. "If I'm going into the ninth inning like I was earlier this year and had 95 pitches under my belt they would allow me to finish the game."

Throwing that many pitches in one game doesn't bother the young hurler either.

"It felt good. If you throw 25-30 pitches an inning that is what wears on you not the 12-pitch innings over the course of an entire game," he said.

Before the All-Star break, Hendrickson capped the first half of the season with his eighth win of the season. When asked about the first-half, he had this to say:

"It?s going good so far. Numbers wise its good. Of course the All-Star game is always fun and this is my first one," Hendrickson commented. "It?s a learning experience for me and on the other hand I just want to relax, have fun and enjoy it."

He went on to discuss the honor of being name the International League starting pitcher.

"It?s a great honor. The coaches, the media and the players look at you in a different light and it feels good," he stated.

As for the game itself, Hendrickson allowed two runs on three hits and walked three. He struck out one as the IL All-Stars defeated the Pacific Coast League, 4-3 in 10 innings.

It seems as though Hendrickson?s dominant first half will pay off as a promotion back to Milwaukee is eminent. Although no official announcement has been made by Brewers General Manager Doug Melvin, Wes Obermueller, the first half fifth starter for the team, has been demoted to Triple-A leaving an opening for Hendrickson. The Brewers are expected to make a decision by Sunday.

Quick Update

--------------------

4-2 Stars in the sixth.

Housman is throwing a gem, I think.

He must have quite a few strikeouts, as the announcer was talking about him pursuing the Stars record of 13?.

Edited - Housman has 10 Ks through six innings.

He may be coming out now, according to the announcer.

I must be going until later.

In progress: Pawtucket (Red Sox) 7, Indianapolis 5, bottom of the ninth in rainy Indianapolis

Jeff Liefer hits a mammoth 8th inning HR at Indy to break a 4-4 tie; Ben Ford manages to blow the save with a hideous inning - oh man, do things stand to get ugly with this affiliate in the second half -- absolute mess of a closer by committee situation since the ill-advised trade of Jason Childers; oh well, there's still the bottom of the ninth...

Arizona Brewers Box Score:

Turns out it wasn't a Mark Rogers day, but 2nd round pick Yovani Gallardo makes his pro debut; we're guessing that the "Garcia" listed is RHP Miguel, down from Helena; high school LHP Brandon Parillo now with seven scoreless pro innings -- only two hits allowed...

Final: Pawtucket (Red Sox) 7, Indianapolis 6

Well, this was entertaining, to say the least; Indy closes to within one run and loads the bases with just one out in the bottom of the ninth -- earlier hero Jeff Liefer strikes out on three pitches and Chris Coste grounds back to the mound to end it; and yes, Al the Thinking Man, the Link Report comments probably focus on wins and losses more than they should -- while I'm not big on "the Brewers need to keep Indianapolis as a AAA affiliate or they're doomed to Ottawa or Edmonton" theory, there's no doubt things are shaping up as bleak for yet another Tribe season, and Jason Childers' departure and the black hole it's left is contributing to the loss of what is considered a plum relationship -- just a thought...

Final: Lansing (Cubs) 12, Beloit 1

Beloit Site Game Summary:

The Lansing Lugnuts defeated the Beloit Snappers 12-1 at Pohlman Field. Greg Kloosterman took the loss for Beloit pitching 4.1 innings and allowing six runs, five earned on seven hits while striking out six. Lansing scored one run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Beloit would tie the game 1-1 on an infield single by Vinny Rottino in the bottom of the first. The Lugnuts broke the tie with two runs in the top of the third as they took a 3-1 lead and never looked back. Lansing would score four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and two each in the seventh and eighth.

I gotta agree with you, MB... at this point, we don't really have any Triple-A relief pitchers that I would feel comfortable inserting into our big league bullpen. While Childers was described by the Brewers' brass as being "down on the depth chart," his success at Triple-A seemed to make him one of the better relief options available. As of now, who do we have? Ben Ford? Matt Childers? Dan Reichert?

Childers wasn't easily replaced, which is an important consideration, and he was also a successful relief option in case of injury or ineffectiveness. Did we really need Peter Bergeron this badly? Couldn't Chris Magruder have filled that fourth outfield spot just as well?

I wouldn't have a problem trading him if he was to net something valuable in return, but that wasn't the case. Its not the end of the world, but I would feel much better if Jason Childers was the AAA closer, helping Indy win some games and ensuring that we have someone who doesn't suck ready to go in case we need him.

Helena RHP Justin Barnes has now retired the first six batters of the game, striking out five (with one weak groundout). He has now struck out 35 and walked one in 22.1 IP -- on his way to posting numbers of just ridiculous proportions. And I find myself listening to a 9-0 third inning blowout just so I can take in more of Barnes' performance -- wow.

If that were actually true Indy would lose about a third of its roster immediately and Huntsville would be out at least 2 position players and a couple of pitchers.

Final: Huntsville 9, Montgomery (Devil Rays) 2

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

The Stars hammered out 16 hits and starter Jeff Housman fanned 10 Biscuits in Huntsville?s 9-2 whipping of Montgomery on Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (12-8, 44-46) have won two straight games to retain a share of first place in the Southern League West second-half standings.

Housman won his third straight start with six outstanding innings, fanning nine or more for the fourth time this season. Housman (4-5) allowed just two runs, one earned, on three hits and three walks. Over the first three frames, Housman fanned six and did not permit a hit.

Kade Johnson and Jamie Gann led the Stars? offensive explosion, both rapping three hits apiece. Johnson launched his fifth homer, his first since April, drove in three runs and scored two, while Gann tripled, singled twice and knocked in three. Rickie Weeks had two singles, one run batted in and two runs scored, extending his hitting streak to eight games, and Tony Gwynn Jr. finished 2-for-5 with two singles and one run scored. Brad Nelson also had two hits, one run batted in and one run scored, and Chris Barnwell and Johnny Raburn had two hits apiece, both doubling once and Raburn scoring two.

All-star Jarod Matthews (2-7) suffered the loss, surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. Stars relievers Paul Stewart and Saul Rivera were both perfect, Stewart retiring all six batters he faced and fanning one, Rivera working a 1-2-3 ninth.

Stars righty Glenn Woolard (2-0, 3.29) meets Biscuits lefty Chris Seddon (6-4, 3.41) in game three of the series on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.

To al and batman, your talk of Indy's bullpen problems made me come to the conclusion that Indy already has a stopper if they will switch him from starting, his name? Wes Obermueller! Before I get ripped, let me say I will be the first to admit Wes is clearly not a starting pitcher however, that being his weakness makes it a strengh as a reliever. Bottom line, Wes seems to do good for 3 to 4 innings or once through the batting order after that its tee time for the opposition. So move Wes to the pen and I believe he'll make a contribution to the organization.

Right on, TN. Ned, I think, has a quote in tomorrow's J-S to the effect of, "It was the same story; he [Obermuller] made it through the lineup once and then got shelled."

Gee, I wonder why that happened.

Remember that Simpsons episode where Homer bangs his head, says "ow," and then just keeps on banging his head, saying "ow" each time?

We may not be geniuses here, but this one seems pretty bloody obvious to me.

Greg.
