FYI from High Desert's Daily Press -- not player-related (ticket sales could have been better with better performance on the field, though)...

Stadium costs continue to be a drain on Adelanto

By MIKE CRUZ/Staff Writer

ADELANTO ? While Mavericks Stadium was meant to be a source of pride for Adelanto and bring in some badly needed sales-tax dollars, the city has been losing money for years, according to the city's latest budget.

The city estimates about $100,000 in income for Mavericks Stadium ? home to the High Desert Mavericks minor league baseball team ? in the 2004-05 fiscal year. But the city estimates that spending for maintenance and upkeep will total about $196,000.

With the $96,000 estimated loss for the year, the cumulative net loss on the stadium's account will rise to $1.85 million.

That's money Adelanto is unlikely to recoup, and officials don't expect to turn a profit anytime soon.

"It's not going to ever be even, according to the current lease we have (with the High Desert Mavericks)," Acting City Manager William Aylward said. "It's costing the city to run the stadium."

The loss carries over from year to year, and Aylward said he advised City Council members that a surplus is needed in the city's general fund just to offset the loss.

The Mavericks' annual lease payment to the city for use of the stadium is $71,765, increasing 2 percent each year until the lease expires in 2010, Aylward said.

In turn, Adelanto pays for utilities, maintenance, stadium improvements and keeping the field in playable condition, Aylward said. The city recently replaced the infield, installed new concrete stairs and replaced a broken water heater in the visitors' clubhouse, he said.

City officials also paid for some major improvements in the mid-1990s, which drove up the overall loss significantly, Aylward said.

Bruce Mann, general manager of the High Desert Mavericks, said his organization has no control over how the city operates the stadium, and he said the team has a good relationship with city officials.

"It's growing, and getting better day by day," he said.

Over the past six months, Mann and Andy Billig, vice president of team owner Brett Sports and Entertainment, have been meeting with Adelanto's city manager and council members to iron out differences. In the past, the team found it tough to get needed improvements, Mann said.

But Mann says that has changed.

"Our relationship is just getting stronger, where in the past it hasn't been the best," he said.

While that's good news, it doesn't change the city's continuing losses on the stadium, which may persist until the lease discussion comes up again in another four to five years, city officials said.

Nice to see Krynzel's hot streak continue.

Maybe the injury and rest did him some good. He'd played a lot of baseball the past couple of years, and he definately looked worn out last year when I saw him in Huntsville.

I know I'm probably just talking stupid right now after another pathetic offensive showing my the Brewers, but let's bring up Krynzel right now while he is hot and see what the kid can do. I know this will never happen, and probably shouldn't, but anything is better than what we have right now.

Final: Charlotte (White Sox) 7, Indianapolis 5

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Mario Valenzuela powered his 17th homer of the season off Tribe starter Wes Obermueller in the Charlotte sixth inning Tuesday afternoon and doubled and scored in the eighth frame to lead the Knights to a 7-5 victory over the Indians. It was the Tribe?s (42-53) eighth consecutive loss, which has included five one-run setbacks.

Tribe manager Cecil Cooper was ejected from the game for arguing a close play at home plate in the eighth inning, which resulted in a key insurance run for the Knights. It was the second ejection for Cooper in five days.

Dave Krynzel led the Tribe offensive attack with three hits, including a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Luis Figueroa and Trent Durrington each contributed two hits.

QUOTES:

Charlotte?s Mario Valuenzela on homer in the sixth:

"I was looking for a good pitch in the sun," Valenzuela said. "The first pitch, they threw me a ball and I didn?t swing. The next pitch was in the sun and I took a good cut and made good contact."

Valenzuela on controversial play at the plate:

"I think I was safe," said Valenzuela. "The catcher wasn?t ready to get me. He gave me home plate and I made a good slide."

NOTES:

Dave Krynzel has hit .447 during the past 10 games (21-for-47).

Trent Durrington has hit .600 over the past four games (6-for-10).

Corey Hart has stolen 15 bases to lead the club in that category.

Last year?s Indians were 41-54 after 95 games. Eight consecutive losses is a season high for the Indians. It is the longest losing streak since the Tribe lost 10 games in a row during the 1998 season (from August 6 to August 16).

Helena gave up 9 runs in the bottom of the 8th to lose 13-15. Dallas Bates (?!?!?!?!?!?!?) gets the loss, giving up 5 unearned runs.

Why are Helena's position players pitching so much?? How about giving them another pitcher or two!!

We wouldn't want to do that to Helena!!!! He can stay at Indy...they can't win anyways.

Seriously though, I'll be very upset if they don't send somebody to Helena soon....first De La Cruz and now Bates. C'mon now!!

Final: High Desert 17, Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 1

Three in a row for the first time all season! Like some of you, I listened to this one up thought the big eighth inning explosion. Announcer Roxy Bernstein admits that for the first time all season, he is scoreboard watching -- Mavericks five games out...

High Desert Site Game Summary:

THREE IN A ROW!

The elusive third win in a row for the High Desert Mavericks has arrived for 2004, and in the form of 17 runs. The Mavericks pounded out season-highs in runs and hits in a 17-1 laugher over the Lancaster JetHawks at Mavericks Stadium on Tuesday night.

The Mavericks (10-15, 35-60), who now have won three in a row for the first time since May 9-11 of 2003 and now put themselves within five games of first-place Rancho Cucamonga in the California League?s South Division, slammed the JetHawks for 14 runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to blow it open, scoring nine in the seventh and five in the eighth.

Enrique Cruz led the Mavs hitting attack by going 3-for-5 with two homers, including a grand-slam, seven RBI?s, and three hits in two innings. Yet, it was perhaps David Bradley?s (4-6) finest outing of 2004 that should be bookmarked, throwing 7.2 rock-solid innings for the win, allowing only a run on six scattered hits along with seven strikeouts.

The Mavs constructed a 3-1 lead before the offensive avalanche began after the seventh-inning stretch. Travis Hinton began the flurry with a two-run double, followed by an RBI single by John Vanden Berg. After Troy Farnsworth and Jeremy Frost cashed in with RBI base-knocks, Enrique Cruz came up as the 10th batter of the inning and slammed a three-run homer to left off reliever Greg Belson, staking the Mavs to a 9-1 lead.

Belson was lifted two batters later for utility infielder Matt Morgan who came on to burn a few innings for a spent Lancaster bullpen, but instead, burned himself.

Belson struck out Jeff Eure to end the seventh-inning slaughter, which accumulated to nine High Desert runs on 10 hits in 14 batters. But the Mavs came back with five more in the eighth on Morgan, sending nine men to the plate. Frost knocked in an RBI single to make it 13-1, then Cruz stepped in and drilled a Morgan pitch over the left field wall for a grand-slam to make it 17-1.

Bradley made it through the first two outs in the eighth, striking out Jarred Ball and Danny Richar, before being lifted for Reggie Rivard, who finished the ballgame on 1.3 innings with two strikeouts.

Lancaster ?s (14-10, 57-37) loss also drops them into second place, and in the meantime the 16-run blowout serves the worst loss in franchise history.

The Mavs look to build more momentum in game three of the series on Wednesday night at Mavericks Stadium, when Bo Hall (4-6) will start for High Desert against Lancaster ?s Enrique Gonzalez (8-5), with the first pitch coming at 7:05 pm (9:05 Central). The game can be heard live on radio at 910-AM and on the internet at www.hdmavs.com.

High Desert Box Score:

Really, there's no debate -- the starting rotation within the organization that's been the most impressive this season belongs to the Mavericks -- nice job, pitching coach John Curtis and the boys! Lots of offense for you to review here...

Final: Provo (Angels) 15, Helena 13

Helena Independent Republic Game Summary:

Brewers out of arms

By IR Staff

PROVO, Utah ? Desperate times for the Helena Brewers made for desperate measures Tuesday night.

With their injury-depleted bullpen out of arms against the Provo Angels, the Brewers resorted to an outfielder to try to stake them to their 19th win.

It didn't work. Provo scored nine runs in the bottom of the eighth, overcoming a 12-6 deficit to lead 15-12. Helena tacked on a run in the ninth for the 15-13 final.

Brewers outfielder Dallas Bates, pressed into service after Daniel McKenna gave up five hits and five runs in two innings, allowed just one hit and five runs in the eighth ? none earned thanks to three errors. Bates took the loss.

Grant Richardson helped Helena take an 11-2 lead, part of his 3-for-5 night that included six RBI, a home run and a double.

Caleb Maher and Andrew Toussaint had four RBI apiece for Provo.

The Brewers host Ogden at 7 p.m. (8 PM Central) Wednesday at Kindrick Legion Field.

Provo Herald Game Story:

Neil K. Warner DAILY HERALD

By the fifth inning of Provo's game against the Helena Brewers on Tuesday night, it had become clear the only way the Angels could avoid three straight losses in its four-game series was to either sabotage the generator that runs the lights, or point out the lightning strikes in the sky to the umpire, or perhaps send a plane over Miller Field and do some cloud seeding to help the game get rained out.

But by the end of the eighth inning it was clear that anyone who didn't think Provo could rally from an 11-2 fifth inning deficit doesn't know Provo third baseman Andrew Toussaint very well.

Toussaint went 4-for-4 on the night and tripled in three runs in Provo's 9-run eighth inning to help the Angels stun Helena by a score of 15-13.

The Angels trailed 12-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning when suddenly Helena couldn't get an out.

Provo catcher Tim Duff started the inning with a single. Toussaint followed with a single and J.R. Renz walked. Caleb Maher, who went 3-for-6 on the night with four RBI, then split the gap in right-center with a three-run double. After a Helena pitching change, Mike Perdomo struck out and Richard Giannotti walked. The inning continued when Ryan Leahy reached base on an error and Duff walked.

Toussaint then came up again for the second time in the inning and tripled to right to clear the bases.

If you're scoring at home, your score book probably looks like a bingo card when you're playing blackout.

Toussaint then scored on another Helena error that allowed Renz to reach base. Maher finally ended the inning by grounding out, but by then Provo had a 15-12 lead.

After Provo's biggest inning of the season, Helena came right back and loaded the bases with one out in the ninth. The Brewers pushed across one run to cut the lead to 15-13 when Renz dropped a shallow flyball in right field that would have been the second out of the inning.

But Provo closer Mitch Arnold battled back to strike out Gilberto Acosta and Charlie Fermaint to finish perhaps the wildest game of the season.

Helena scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open the game and take a commanding 11-2 lead.

Helena's Jake Serfass made the first and last outs of the inning, but between Serfass's non-contributions, Steven Sollmann and Grant Richardson each doubled in a pair of runs that gave the Brewers what looked like an insurmountable 11-2 lead.

Provo chipped away at Helena's lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Toussaint, of course, had something to do with it. He walked to start the rally and Renz cleared the bases a monster two-run homer that cut the lead to 11-4.

The Angles then strung together three consecutive singles from Maher, Perdomo and Giannotti. Chris Walston then hit a sacrifice fly to left, but Sean Rodriguez struck out to end the inning.

Provo got after Helena again in the sixth when Duff walked with one out and Toussaint singled. Renz then struck out, but Maher followed with a single to score Duff. Perdomo then walked to load the bases, but Giannotti grounded out.

Helena jumped on Provo starter Karl Gelinas for five runs in the first two innings. Richardson hit a three-run homer in the first and Tony Festa hit a two-run homer in the second to give the Brewers a 5-1 lead.

The win improves Provo's record to 16-15, while Helena dropped to 18-13.

RHP's Derek DeCarlo and Dan McKenna can't let this get to the last man in the pen, they just can't...
