Mark McCarter's Huntsville Times Stars' Notes:

Another two bite the dust: Pitchers Mike Jones and Chris Saenz are out for the rest of the season. The two flew to Milwaukee Friday and were examined by Brewers' physicians. Jones has what doctors called a "slap lesion" in his shoulder, and he could undergo surgery. Saenz has a sprained ligament in his elbow and will go through several months of rehab before being allowed to pitch.

Jones has been sidelined nearly as much as he has been on the active roster, sitting out most of the second half last season and pitching only six games this year. He was 1-4 with a 4.18 ERA while Saenz was 5-5 with a 4.15 ERA, plus a win against the Cardinals in one start for Milwaukee in April.

The litany of Milwaukee's top-prospect pitchers lost to injury for significant amounts of time has been mind-boggling and alarming: Nick Neugebauer, JM Gold, David Pember, Ben Diggins, Manny Parra, Ben Hendrickson and Jose Mieses.

Matt Ford, another surgically repaired pitcher, continues to improve for the Stars.

"He'll get consistent with his feel for his mechanics and extend his pitch count,'' said pitching coach Fred Dabney after Ford had a solid four-inning appearance Thursday.

If past performance says anything, the Stars' road trip to Mobile, Birmingham and West Tenn has some promise. They are 9-6 at those places this season and 20-16 overall against those three teams.

Since being sent down from Indianapolis on July 3, Roberto Giron has allowed only two hits in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Reliever Saul Rivera has permitted only one earned run in 9 2/3 innings since being acquired from the Montreal organization. Ben Hendrickson, who pitched for Huntsville last season, is expected to be promoted to Milwaukee today and will start for the Brewers at Cincinnati Monday night.

On deck: The Stars end their home stand tonight against Montgomery at 6:05 then embark on their longest road trip of the season, visiting Mobile, Birmingham and West Tenn.

What a hot day for baseball. Man it was warm waiting in line for those darn bobbles.

Drew Anderson baby...I've been pimping him a long time now. Don't look now but he's batting a robust .296 and still moving up.

Heether had a great double that was ripped down the left field line. Nice hit.

Murray, murray, murray....I agree with Jim's assessment if Lewis can play short at all.

Screwup in the first. Runner on first with 2 outs. Steals...Eveland picks him off...throw to second where Murray was waiting for the easy out....Guilder runs into Murray trying to make the play not knowing Murray was standing on second. Knocks Murray and ball off bag guy safe with a steal. Guy scores next play on easy rbi single.

Eveland was flat bringing it. K'ing everyone left and right...fun to watch. Enjoy him in Huntsville next year...hopefully.

Jim made a mention of Moss's non rbi groundout....not sure who's fault it was but Heether was on third after the opening double....should have been running on that play and most likely would have made it...but didn't and Moss grounds out.

Great day, great crowd (3100+), plus kids run the bases after the game....Eveland deserved so much better.

Could we be seeing a move in High Desert? Parra and Harper never miss their turns in the rotation even if it meant moving somebody else. Also Khalid was the one that was moved out of the rotation in order for Bruso to get in. Maybe I am a conspiracy theory guy, but this may lead to something else.Oh well, at least I will stir up some conversation.

Certainly the high point of LHP Ryan Costello's pro career -- sometimes we lose sight of how much talent even players who don't quite register on the Power 50 have. Each and every player in this organization is capable of having a night like this. It's consistency and staying power that are a true measure. Congrats, Ryan -- a few on the forum were calling for your head this past week...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Costello's 3-Hit Gem Toasts Biscuits

Stars lefty Ryan Costello spun a three-hit, 11-strikeout masterpiece as Huntsville completed a four-game sweep of Montgomery with a 3-0 shutout on Sunday evening at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (14-8, 46-46) moved into sole possession of first place in the Southern League West second-half standings, one game in front of Birmingham.

Costello (5-3) recorded his fifth victory and Huntsville?s first complete game and shutout of 2004, throwing 100 pitches and allowing only five base runners on three hits and two walks over nine innings. The 6-foot-6 left-hander tossed four no-hit innings before Eric Reece?s leadoff single in the fifth. The only other Biscuit hits were Brian Martin?s one-out single in the eighth and Jace Brewer?s one-out double in the ninth. Brewer was the lone runner to advance past first. Costello required just four batters over the minimum to record 27 outs, and he went to a three-ball count only four times. Costello?s 11 strikeouts were the Stars? single-game high this season.

Biscuits righty John Webb, making his first start of the season, was perfect until Tony Gwynn Jr.?s one-out single in the fourth. On the next pitch, Prince Fielder launched a no-doubt homer to right, his 15th of the season, for a 2-0 Stars lead. In the fifth, Ryan Knox doubled with one out and Ozzie Chavez singled him to third. Kade Johnson?s sacrifice fly plated Knox to make it 3-0, Huntsville.

Webb (0-1) suffered his first loss for the Biscuits, permitting three runs on four hits and no walks with one strikeout in five frames. Biscuit reliever Carlos Hines threw two scoreless innings and Austin Coose added another.

The Stars open a 12-game road trip Monday night at Hank Aaron Stadium in Mobile. The Bay Bears send righty Mike Thompson (5-0, 3.18) against Huntsville right-hander Dennis Sarfate (4-8, 5.11). Game time is 7:05 p.m. and the FPH Financial Services Pre-game Show starts at 6:50 p.m. Stars baseball can be heard on ESPN 1450 and at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Pawtucket swept the Indianapolis Indians in a four-game series this weekend at Victory Field, culminating Sunday afternoon in an 11th inning, 6-5 victory over the Tribe.

Tribe starter Pedro Liriano pitched 6.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walking six and striking out seven. He teamed with reliever Dan Reichert, who threw 3.1 innings, giving up a single walk and striking out four, to keep the Tribe in the game.

Indianapolis closer Ben Ford (0-2) gave up a bases clearing triple in the 11th to Henri Stanley to give Pawtucket a 6-3 lead. Indianapolis rallied for two runs in the bottom of the frame, highlighted by Luis Figueroa?s two-run single, but the Tribe left two runners on base as Dave Krynzel bounced out to Red Sox finisher Edwin Almonte, who collected his fourth save.

Matt Duff (4-3) earned the win in relief for Pawtucket, who improves to 44-51, while the Tribe (42-51) falls for the sixth time in a row.

Trent Durrington and Brandon Gemoll each contributed three hits for Indianapolis. Figueroa and Alex Delgado finished with two hits.

QUOTES:

Cecil Cooper, Indians manager on the loss:

"We didn?t quit today," said Cooper. "It?s tough when you?re losing. But, we battled back and we had some good moments today. We?ll continue to work and make things come together."

NOTES:

The Tribe?s six-game losing streak is the longest of the season.

Brandon Gemoll has a six-game hitting streak.

Dave Krynzel?s five-game hitting streak concluded with an 0-5 outing.

Seriously, promote Iribarren, yah? Flipflop him and Escobar, and move Sollmann to short.

If Sollman could play SS he would already be there, and he would have played there in college. It's just like the speculation of Will Lewis playing SS, which goes back to people wondering if Ronnie Belliard could play SS. There's a reason all of them are playing 2B.

The thing is, guys like Sollmann and Lewis (unlike Belliard) project as utility players, so they had better learn something else other than second base, so I really don't see the harm in trying this for awhile in rookie ball. Worst case scenario, Sollmann gets switched back next year, or next month. It's not like it is a clancyesque move from left field to catcher.

Iribarren clearly deserves to be playing in Helena, and Sollmann is outplaying Escobar pretty handily. I'd rather find out if he can play it now than in a few years down the road.

I agree 100% that Sollmann & Lewis project as utility players, and that they don't compare favorably to Ron Belliard in the same regard. However, if Sollmann & Lewis could play SS, they would already be there. Sollmann could have easily slid over to SS when Matt Macri moved to 3B, and I'm sure no one was preventing Lewis from playing SS at TCU. While added versatility would definitely add value to both players, unfortunately it seems as though there is good reason why neither are tried at the most demanding position on the field.

Of course, Craig Counsell is the Brewers' big league SS, but he played SS at Notre Dame. It's similar to why Brad Nelson was moved away from 3B upon being drafted by the Brewers, some players simply don't project well to play certain positions, and I'm sure there are plenty of good reasons why Lewis & Sollmann aren't playing SS.

I was just going to bring up Counsell as someone we didn't think could play shortstop but actually can excel there, but you're still probably right about Sollmann and Lewis. Toby is right too, though, that it will hard to be a valuable utility player if you can only play second.

Mark Loretta is another example of someone who was able to play a solid shortstop in a pinch. I wouldn't mind seeing Lewis and Sollmann both spend some time at the position, even if it is true that they are currently poor fielders there. If they could improve to the point where they can play short, even if it is slightly below average, then their value increases quite a bit.

We don't really have a clue, though, and for that reason I'll defer to the organization's analysis. It sure would be nice if Will or Steve could turn into Counsell-type 2B/SS/3B guys, maybe with more offense and less defense. A guy can dream, no? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
