MassBrew

Ugh -- put together all my paperwork on today's probables last night and then left it at home this morning.

Will put together the rest at lunch or this afternoon, but for now, I did want to give the heads-up that Beloit has a noontime central matinee that has audio available.

BELOIT: TBD at home vs. Fort Wayne (Padres), 12:00 PM

Any idea where Lou Palmisano has been these past 3 games? I noticed he missed the doubleheader yesterday and also today's game....

Beloit lost by the way. 9-11 was the score. Rottino doubled, homered, and drove in 5 runs. Beloit's pitching was not good. Durost got the L.

High Desert Game Notes:

David Bradley gets the start tonight...

TODAY: The Mavericks wrap up a three-game series at the Bakersfield Blaze (Devil Rays) and the third game of a six-game roadtrip. High Desert has claimed the first two games in this series, taking a 3-2 lead over the Blaze in the season series, as Bakersfield won two out of three at Mavericks Stadium in mid-April. It?s the final trip up north for High Desert this season, as the Mavs are 3-8 on the road against teams from the California League Northern Division, winning their last three and 7-13 overall against the north. The road has not been easy for the Mavs this season, posting a 16-33 record, but have won five of their last seven road contests. With wins in the first two games of this series, the Mavericks have captured their first road series of the season, plus they are looking for their first sweep of the year and looking for their first three-game winning streak of the year, they have won two straight nine times.

FOR STARTERS: High Desert has received excellent starting pitching as of late. Even though the the Mavs are just 4-4 in the last eight games, their starters have not lost a decision and have put up two victories. Over the last eight, the starters are 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA with 14 earned runs in 50 2/3 innings and have allowed only 41 hits.

ERRORS: At times the Mavs have struggled with the leather, and now is one of those times. High Desert committed at least one error in five of the last six games series and have committed 33 in the last 19 games. For the season, the Mavs have made 112 errors in 89 games which is second most in the Cal League, and Lake Elsinore has committed a league worst 122.

ON DECK: The Mavs roadtrip continues tonight in Bakersfield with game three of a three-game set against the Blaze, and then wraps up with three at Stockton, before the Mavericks return home for a seven-game homestand against Lancaster and Inland Empire starting Monday July 19 and runs through Sunday July 25.

-----

this is just a guess, but barring an injury no one knows about, I wouldnt doubt that he is just getting some midseason rest.

He is a catcher, in his first LONG pro season and plays 90% of his games behind the plate. I can just see Don Money sitting him for a few games to keep him fresh throughout the season.

Final: Pawtucket (Red Sox) 12, Indianapolis 6

Indianapolis Post-Game Notes:

Pawtucket blasted Indianapolis starter Wes Obermueller (0-1) for six runs Thursday night to defeat the Indianapolis Indians, 12-6. Pawtucket (41-51) snapped a seven-game losing streak and sent the Tribe (42-48) to its third straight defeat at Victory Field.

The Red Sox pounded out 14 hits, including Earl Snyder?s 26th homer off Obermueller in the second inning.

Indians center fielder Dave Krynzel led the Tribe offense with three hits, scoring a run and driving in a run as well. The Tribe rallied late in the game, scoring four runs in the eighth and a run in the ninth, but were stymied for the first six innings by Pawtucket?s starter, John Stephens (6-6).

The two teams meet at Victory Field Friday night for the second game of the four-game series. The Tribe will send LHP Jorge De La Rosa (1-4, 5.66) against RHP Byung-Hyun Kim (0-2, 3.43).

QUOTES:

Buddy Bailey, Pawtucket manager on the win:

"We haven?t played well lately," said Bailey. "Starting pitching usually dictates the outcomes of games. Stephens pitched well. It helps when you can have a quality start like that during a tough travel day.

Bailey on Snyder?s home run power:

"Snyder had a great first half," said Bailey. "He?s hit balls out of difficult parks like Richmond and Norfolk. He?s the real deal."

NOTES:

Rupert, "America?s Favorite Survivor," will throw out a ceremonial pitch, take pictures and sign autographs for Indians fans at Friday night?s game. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the Victory Field box office or by calling (317) 269-3542.

Indianapolis is now 5-8 in the month of July.

Thursday?s attendance was 8,652.

Chris Coste now has a five-game hitting streak.

Final: Huntsville 4, Montgomery (Devil Rays) 2

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

In their first game after the all-star break, the Stars displayed a formula that could propel them to a playoff berth. Huntsville knocked out 11 hits, played sparkling defense when it counted most and delivered brilliant bullpen work in Thursday night?s 4-2 win over Montgomery at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars (11-8, 43-46) maintained a share of first place in the Southern League West second-half standings.

The stellar defense stalled the Biscuits when they stood poised to break the game open. With the bases loaded, none out in the third and Huntsville down 2-1, Montgomery?s Vince Harrison hit a bullet at third baseman Chris Barnwell, who made a one-hop scoop and fired home for the force out. Catcher Kade Johnson?s relay to first completed an unlikely 5-2-3 double play, then Matt Ford struck out Jace Brewer to strand two of 11 runners the Biscuits left on base in the game.

Prince Fielder put the Stars in front to stay in the bottom of the third. Fielder?s run-scoring, first-inning double gave Huntsville an early 1-0 lead, and he batted again with two on and one out in the third. Fielder?s second double to dead-centerfield knocked in two more runs for a 3-2 Stars advantage. Fielder completed his perfect 3-for-3 night with a seventh-inning single that plated Tony Gwynn Jr. for a key insurance run.

Rickie Weeks also continued his hot hitting for Huntsville, extending his torrid hitting streak to a personal season-high seven games and finishing 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two runs scored.

Huntsville?s bullpen was brilliant behind Ford, who permitted just two runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts over four innings. Brian Adams (3-1) picked up the win with two scoreless frames, fanning one and allowing two hits. Fernando Rijo, Roberto Giron and John Novinsky each authored one spotless inning, allowing a total of two hits and one walk while fanning four. Nonvinsky secured his 11th save in 11 chances. Mike Prochaska (2-5) suffered the loss, fanning eight while surrendering three runs on eight hits and one walk over six innings.

Stars lefty Jeff Housman (3-5, 3.23) meets Biscuits righty Jared Matthews (2-6, 2.91) in game two of the series on a Fireworks Friday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m. on Tools for Schools Night presented by WHNT-19. Fans donating school supplies to WHNT at the stadium receive free general admission to the game.

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville update:

THE PRINCE AND THE PESTILENCE

Birmingham and Huntsville remain tied for first place, as seems so natural, as the league gets back in the swing after a three-day respite.

Three former Stars pulled off a nice trifecta during the All-Star break, winning their respective home run derbies --- Brad Nelson in the Southern League All-Star game, Miguel Tejada in the major league All-Star game, and Bucky Jacobsen in the Triple-A All-Star Game........ The good news doesn't end there for Bucky, and his unique fan club, the Buckybackers. After a 7-year career of ups and downs, perseverance wins out. Bucky Jacobsen is joining the Seattle Mariners. He was in uniform Thursday night at Safeco Field where Seattle entertained the Cleveland Indians.

Bucky hit .274 in four years with the Huntsville Stars (1999-2002), then was released by the Brewers on June 15, 2002........ Bad timing as far as I'm concerned. The Cardinals picked him up and in 2003, he hit a league-leading 31 HRs and drove in 84 runs for the Tennessee Smokies. He was also named to the Southern League All-Star team........ Signing with the Mariners as a free agent after that season, he was hitting .312 for the Tacoma Rainiers, leading the PCL in RBIs and 2nd in home runs when Seattle bought his minor league contract......... John Olerud was let go to make room for him.

Huntsville fans owe a great debt of gratitude to Bucky for their 2001 Championship (shared with Jacksonville). Coming down from Indianapolis for the first half stretch run, he hit an incredible .441 (41-for-93), slugging a superhuman .860, while driving in 28 runs in 27 games......... The first-half title, of course, was no single-handed effort, but without Bucky, it's doubtful it would have happened........ Bucky will become the 146th former Huntsville Star to make it to the majors once he appears in a game.

Bucky isn't the only one getting a promotion....... Ben Hendrickson, # 145 on the list of former Stars to make it to the show, is going back up....... He'll start Monday for the Brewers at Cincinnati, and this time, he's there to stay (we sincerely hope). The Brewers will see what he can do from the #5 hole in the rotation....... Can't be any worse then Wes Obermueller.......... Ben was the starting pitcher in the Triple-A All-Star Game at Pawtucket, won by the International League in the 10th inning, 4-3. Ben (8-2) is currently the International League ERA leader with a 2.27 ERA. Good luck to you, Ben! We wish you great success!

The night belonged to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntsville, who swelled the crowd to over 2,200, Prince Fielder, and the gnats.

Yes, the gnats. And their friends the flying beetles, the mosquitoes, and the dragonflies.

They're always there. Every night. But on this ironically still and comfortable night, they decided either to take in a game after dinner at the nearby city dump or just decide the night was right for a full-scale invasion......... Players were swatting them for the better part of 2/3 of the ballgame. Fielder had trouble catching a foul ball in the 6th inning with a swarm of them in his face....... Chris Barnwell was fighting them at third base......... From one end of the field to the other, they were a constant distraction on the field.

But while the players didn't have a choice, the paying customers did........ Some of them had all they could stand, and left in the 5th inning......... Looking up toward the lights at every standard, you could actually see them travel in thick formations that looked like wisps of smoke, swarming from the lights to the lower section of seats where they clung to pants, shirts, hair, body parts, anywhere......... No hot dog was safe tonight......... Who does the spraying in this city? Say, Mayor Spencer, did you know this the election is a little more than a month away? By the way, where are those new seats you promised us?

After losing two games to Mobile without Rickie Weeks and Prince Fielder, Stars fans found out how valuable they actually are this half........ They combined for six hits in seven at-bats tonight. Fielder came in hitting just .179 against Montgomery in 15 games this season, but he was a one-man wrecking crew tonight, driving in all four runs to carry the Stars to victory as the Stars go to 11-8 to keep pace with the hated Barons........ After such a dismal first half, they have moved from the card room to the engine room on this team....... Weeks (.259) extended his hitting streak to seven games, and is 15-for-40 (.375) in July with six doubles........ Fielder, in 37 at-bats, is hitting .351 for the month while striking out just six times. And, oh yes, nine RBIs in his last 10 games.

Looking at Mike Prochaska, who shutout the Stars over six innings on four hits for a 1-0 victory on July 7, the Stars got their leadoff hitter on base in each of the first three innings........... Weeks led off the Stars' first with a single to center and, one out later, scored when Fielder lined a double to the center field wall....... In the 3rd, Kade Johnson (8-for-28, .286 in July after two sub-.200 months) singled through short and into left past the diving glove of Jace Brewer. Weeks then singled on a 1-0 pitch up the middle and off the glove of 2nd baseman Fernando Cortez, sending KJ to second........ After Prochaska struck out Tony Gwynn, Jr. on a hard 3-and-2 slider, Prince drove a 1-1 pitch over the head of centerfielder Amado German again, scoring both runners and making it 3-2.

The pesky Biscuits pecked at starter Matt Ford, whose parents drove in from St. Louis to attend this game, for five hits in the first three innings......... Ford, who could not get that first strike to four of the five batters he faced in the 1st inning, nevertheless got two quick outs on seven pitches, but then walked Cortez and gave up a single to .286-hitting Chiaron Isenia........ Isenia came into the ballgame with a .381 average off Stars pitching. After a 3-for-4 night, he's now 11-for-25 (.440)....... Frank Moore, just off the disabled list, worked Ford to a 2-2 count, fouled one off, then short-hopped a ball straight to Fielder for the third out.

The Bisquik Nine weren't done with Ford........ With one out In the 2nd inning, the bottom of the order connected with back-to-back hits........ Jace Brewer hit a Texas Leaguer that dropped in front of Jamie Gann. Brian Martin then pulled a 1-0 pitch past the diving gloves of Chris Barnwell and Ozzie Chavez....... Both infielders got a glove on the ball, but neither could stop it. Brewer held up at second as the ball trickled into left........ Dan Massiatte then took a 2-0 fastball and pulled it barely down the left field line for a double into the corner, scoring Brewer........ A deep fly ball to Gann in front of the right field track enabled Martin to score what would be the Biscuits' final run.

It looked like Montgomery would have a big inning in the 3rd........ After Cortez chopped a ball over the head of Ford, Isenia drew a walk on five pitches, and Moore reached base on an error........ Moore dropped a bunt down on Ford, who tried to pick the ball up from the third base side of the grass on the infield, but trying to throw before picking up the ball didn't work. Ford was charged with an error and now the bases were full with nobody out......... Chris Barnwell has made 16 errors so far this season compared to Corey Hart's 18 at this time last year, but he looks at times like Brooks Robinson, whereas Hart's scatterarm just can't compare. Barnwell looks like the 3rd baseman we were missing last year, even though the error totals are similar.......... Oh, I still wouldn't trade Corey's bat, but Barney has impressed so many people at the Stadium from the fan in the seat to Manager Frank Kremblas himself........ With the sacks full, Barnwell gloved a one-hop bullet off the bat of Vince Harrison, and fired home where Kade forced the runner, then threw to Fielder to complete a 5-2-3 double play........ From that point on, only three Montgomery runners reached second base........ Ford pitched to only four hitters in his final inning, then left the game to Brian Adams after throwing 73 pitches, 43 for strikes (59%)......... Two starts ago, Matt was on a 75-pitch limit, still coming back from having bone chips removed. In his last start, July 7, he threw 67 pitches.

With three days rest or more for the bullpen, Kremblas brought out all the stops........ Brian Adams' two scoreless innings was followed by Fernando Rijo, who left two runners on, but got three fly outs, Roberto Giron, now unscored upon in his last nine relief appearances (8 2/3 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 12 K), and John Novinsky, who threw 17 pitches in the 9th, but picked up his 11th save.......... Fielder drove in an insurance run in the 7th on a one-out single to left off fireballer Carlos Hines, driving in Gwynn, who doubled for the 4th time this month, matching his April total, which is his personal best this season.

No, it's not your imagination. The Biscuits are actually tougher against first place teams (21-25) than they are against the rest of the league (15-27), but away from their Montgomery oven, they are 13-30......... The Stars bullpen is 6-2 with a 2.51 ERA over 71 2/3 innings in the second half........ Brad Nelson has struck out 12 times in his last 28 ABs (.429), but is hitting .282 with nine RBI in July......... John Novinsky now has eight saves and a win in his last nine appearances........ Friday, Jeff Housman (3-5, 3.23), 5th among Southern League ERA leaders, makes his 16th start for the Stars in 19 appearances. Jarod Matthews (2-6, 2.91), 3rd among SL ERA leaders, goes for Montgomery on another Fireworks Friday. The forecast calls for partly cloudy skies with light winds from the southeast.

Bakersfield newspaper coverage of the High Desert loss:

There won't be Daily Press coverage of this Northern Division road game...

Blaze avoids sweep against Mavericks, 8-1

By JUAN GUTIERREZ, Special to The Californian

It's said that charity begins at home and Thursday the friendly confines of Sam Lynn Ball Park illustrated the point perfectly.

The Blaze avoided a sweep at the hands of the last-place team in the California League by using six unearned runs to beat High Desert, 8-1.

The Blaze (8-12 second half) got its first run of the game on a pitch that went off the glove of catcher Froilan Villanueva, allowing Luis De Paula to score from third base, for Bakersfield's first lead of the series.

After back-to-back singles to start the second inning, Mavericks' third baseman Jeff Eure booted a routine grounder off the bat of Luis Mateo, allowing Brent Cordell to score. Two batters later, Sandy Aracena came through with a bloop-single to center field to put the Blaze up 3-1.

A big two-out rally in the sixth inning extended by the second error of the game for Mavericks put the game out of reach. Shortstop Enrique Cruz allowed Elijah Dukes to reach base and the play proved costly again. Consecutive singles by Mateo and Matt Rico and a two-run double by Aracena put the Blaze comfortably ahead, 6-1. Aracena was the player of the game, going 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Rico went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Jason Hammel was impressive in his first start for Bakersfield since being called up from Class A Charleston (S.C.) Sunday. The right-hander lasted seven innings, scattered eight hits and struck out four while allowing a single run to earn his first victory with the Blaze.

"Hammel did an outstanding job in his first start for us," Blaze manager Mako Oliveras said. "Last year he got a little rattled, but tonight his composure was good."

Bakersfield was far from immaculate in the field as well, committing a season-high five errors in the game. But three timely double plays took the pressure off Hammel.

"I scattered eight hits and battled because there were runners on all night long," Hammel said. "(My teammates) came up big and came back with the double plays. They were there when I needed them."

High Desert (7-13) scored its only run in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Cruz.

The Blaze did everything it could to return the favor in the seventh inning, committing three errors to put Mavericks' runners at second and third with two outs.

Doubles?

Nice to see Prince and Rickie tear the cover off the ball. Nice to see them getting outta the slump.

But Prince is in there to hit them OVER the fence, not OFF the fence.

So 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and a walk isn't good enough?

Oh, well someone should be sure to tell him that, then. And here I thought the goal was to hit the ball and reach base safely.... silly me.

Prince and Rickie are starting to heat up and we're complaining about the type of hits they're getting to do it...

Sheesh.
