I believe that it has more to do with keeping Harper on a strict five day rotation. They have slowly worked him up to 90 pitches now. Could it be that we will see Parra and Harper moving some folks out of the AA rotation very soon? Those two guys never miss their turn in the rotation even if it means moving some pitchers around.

Final, Game Two: Beloit 3, Fort Wayne (Padres) 0

As I listen here to the Snappers recap, I gain more venom for the insidious Sports Network site -- which clearly had the Snappers winning Game One. Well, guess what, turns out here is your correct final:

Final, Game One: Fort Wayne (Padres) 4, Brewers 2, eight innings, scheduled for seven

Yup, Fort Wayne scored three in the top of the eighth, and then held on. And this is the site Baseball America wants to hang its hat on for scores and stats going forward? Bad, really bad....

So, once again to summarize, Snappers split, not sweep...

Getting ready to call it a night, and in the most vague Link Report scoring update of all time, Helena defeated Ogden tonight. It came down to a tight ninth inning with Robbie Wooley hanging on to close things out. In what had to be an extremely frustrating experience for Helena Brewer friends and family, the Ogden audio feed was barely coherent -- correct that, it wasn't coherent -- except for the tiniest bits and pieces, at least when I joined it late. Hopefully a one-night thing. Score and details in the AM, but Helena (we think http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) eeks one out...

Final: Helena 9, Ogden (Dodgers) 7

Helena Box Score:

14 base hits (13 of them singles) plus seven walks add up to a big "small-ball" victory; LHP Jared Theodorakas will be heading out soon for work with the Greek Olympic team; not my imagination, but Hasan Rasheed missed some time there, right? His awesome summer thus far continues here, as he led off three of the first four innings with singles, but was removed after that -- something's up with that...

Helena Independent Record Game Notes:

Cardiac Brewers survive

OGDEN, Utah ? As always, the Helena Brewers found a way to make things interesting.

Leading 9-6 heading to the bottom of the ninth Wednesday night at Lindquist Field, Robbie Wooley and his league-low ERA entered the game, presumably to sew things up.

But Wooley allowed a walk, three hits and a run before getting two strikeouts with the bases loaded and a grounder to escape with his first professional save in a 9-7 Helena win.

Helena scored four first-inning runs, two by way of Dallas Bates' two-RBI single.

Hasan Rasheed was 3-for-3, but injured his hand successfully stealing a base and had to leave the game.

Grant Richardson had a triple in a 3-for-5 effort and scored three runs. Adam Mannon was 2-for-4.

Helena is at the Raptors again tonight at 7:00 (8:00 Central).

More details on the Helena game from the Ogden Standard Examiner:

Ragged Raptors

Late-inning rally falls short against Helena

By JASEN ASAY

Standard-Examiner staff

jasay@standard.net

OGDEN -- The Ogden Raptors have treated fans to several come-from-behind victories this season at Lindquist Field.

However, a late-inning rally Wednesday night came up short as Ogden lost to the Helena Brewers 9-7.

The loss was the seventh in the last eight games for the Raptors (11-13), who at one point had a league-best 7-3 mark. The two teams meet tonight at Lindquist Field in the second of the three-game series.

Trailing 9-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Ogden scored a run to narrow the score to 9-7 and had the bases loaded with no outs.

But Robbie Wooley came up big for the Brewers (15-10), striking out the next two batters to pick up his first save. The Raptors' Emilio Marcos grounded out to end the game.

"Our guys did a good job of getting into position to win and we had the right guys at the plate," said Ogden manager Travis Barbary. "Their guy did a good job of bearing down and getting the job done."

Luis Castillo hit a lead-off single in the inning and moved to second when Cory Dunlap walked. Dan Batz singled to load the bases before Chris Westervelt hit an infield single to score Castillo and advance the runners.

The RBI was the second of the game for Westervelt, who hit a solo home run in the fifth to cut Helena's lead to 7-5. Westervelt still leads the team in home runs with six, and is tied for third in the Pioneer League.

Helena jumped ahead early with four runs in the top of the first against Ogden starter Blake Johnson (2-1), who took his first loss of the year. Johnson gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Derek DeCarlo (2-0) was credited with the win after throwing 4 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on five hits.

Ogden got two-run homers by Blake DeWitt in the first inning and Marcos in the second to pull even 4-4. But the Brewers broke the tie in the top of the third with a run and added two more in the fourth and six innings.

Castillo led Ogden, going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. Marcos, DeWitt, Westervelt and Travis Denker also had two hits for the home team.

While the Raptors have dropped out of first place in the South Division, Barbary said he reminded his players they are still in the race. Ogden came into Wednesday's contest just one game behind Casper for first place with 13 games remaining before the first half champion is decided.

Barbary said every team goes through a tough time during the season.

"We're just picking a bad time to go through it with the race so close," Barbary said. "It'd be nice to get something together and put together a streak at the end of the first half."

*RAPTORS' NOTES: Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew will be in town tonight as part of a fundraiser for the VistaCare foundation.

BRIAN NICHOLSON/Standard-Examiner

David Nicholson of the Ogden Raptors lands safely back at second as Steven Sollmann of the Helena Brewers chases a ball Wednesday?s game at Lindquist Field.

Daily Press High Desert Game Story:

Surging Mavs douse Blaze

Harper pitches six strong innings for High Desert

FROM STAFF REPORTS

BAKERSFIELD ? The High Desert offense, which made starting pitcher Manny Parra sweat out a victory in the series opener against Bakersfield, provided Jesse Harper with earlier run support Wednesday to secure the right-hander his first win in nearly a month.

High Desert (7-12), propelled by a four-run third inning and Harper's dominant pitching performance, topped Bakersfield 5-3 at Sam Lynn Ballpark.

The win assured the Mavericks, who wrap up their three game set against the Blaze tonight, their first road series victory of the season in 15 tries.

Harper (2-2) allowed just one run on one hit in six innings. He struck out five and at one point sent down 13 straight Blaze batters.

Bakersfield (7-12) starter Brian Lockwood, whose only win this season came in April against High Desert, walked a pair of Mavs in the third inning before surrendering a single to Callix Crabbe to load the bases.

The next batter, Jeff Eure, cleared the bases with a three-run double to right-center field and later scored on a single by Travis Hinton.

High Desert and Bakersfield exchanged runs in the fifth before the Blaze threatened to erase the Mavs' lead.

Elijah Dukes narrowed the deficit in the seventh with a solo home run off High Desert reliever Eric Henderson. The Blaze loaded the bases in the inning, but couldn't capitalize.

Bakersfield scored another run in the bottom of the ninth against Dan Kolb but left runners stranded at first and third. Kolb picked up his second save of the year.

The Mavericks will attempt to win their third straight game tonight, something High Desert has failed to do this season.

In a case of technology moving backward, the Beloit Daily News has announced that its weekday online edition will not be available until approx. 5:00 PM going forward -- so expect a lot of next-day, actually, next-evening accounts here:

Two Snappers combine to earn a split

By Ryan Frey

Daily News correspondent

There's an old adage that says good pitching triumphs over good hitting.

The Beloit Snappers certainly had plenty of the former as they shut out the Fort Wayne Wizards for all but two of the 15 innings played in Wednesday night's double-header.

Unfortunately for Beloit, Fort Wayne had its own stingy pitching as the teams battled to a split.

The Wizards pushed across three runs in the eighth inning to win the opener, 4-2, while Mitch Stetter and Carlos Villanueva combined on a four-hit 3-0 shutout in the nightcap at Pohlman Field.

Starter Greg Moreira was tough in the first game for the Snappers, allowing just three hits and one run over six innings. Both he and Fort Wayne starter Sean Thompson (6-3) allowed just a run apiece, each coming in the opening inning.

The Wizards scored three runs off reliever Ty Taubenheim (2-2) in the top of the eighth, making a winner of Thompson. Reliever Howie Spence allowed two this and a run in the bottom of the inning, but hung on for his second save.

The Snappers got a measure of revenge in the nightcap behind Stetter and Villanueva. Stetter, predominately a relief pitcher, was aided by some fine defensive work behind him, including a key double play. He threw 4 1/3 innings and 55 pitches in his rare start.

``Stetter threw well and has been throwing well all year,'' Beloit pitching coach Rich Sauveur said. ``He has done a great job in any situation we put him in.''

Stetter recorded five strikeouts, while allowing only two hits and one walk.

Beloit broke up the scoreless tie in the fourth inning. Guilder Rodriguez started it off with a single and Terry Trofholz bunted for a hit. After Drew Anderson's strikeout, Vinny Rottino lined an RBI single up the middle.

While the Snappers couldn't get more out of that opportunity, they added a run in the fifth. After Manuel Ramirez's single, Wandel Campana put down a would-be sacrifice bunt. Fort Wayne starting pitcher Greg Conden (2-7) rushed his throw and sailed it past the first baseman. Ramirez scored from first on the play.

Beloit added one more insurance run for Villanueva (6-5), who had replaced Stetter with one out in the fifth inning. Adam Heether touched them all when he drove a pitch just out of the reach of the Wizards center fielder for his 14th home run of the season.

``That was a huge home run for us,'' Beloit manager Don Money said. ``It extended our lead and provided Villanueva with a bigger cushion. It gave us a little bit more breathing room.''

Villanueva, in his second appearance since coming off the disabled list, opened the seventh with a strikeout. But the Wizards kept it interesting with back-to-back singles.

Villanueva, however, struck out the final two Fort Wayne batters to preserve the shutout. He matched Stetter with five strikeouts.

``I felt great, and all my pitches were working for me,'' Villanueva said. ``Stetter started the game off great for us and I wanted to do might part. I threw a couple of bad pitches to give up the hits, but Rich (Sauveur) came out and told me to relax.

``I feel I brought my `A' game to the park today. Now we just have to keep on winning.''

The Snappers are 9-10 and in sixth place in the Western Division. Fort Wayne (11-7) leads the Eastern Division.

In the opener, Greg Moreira allowed a first-inning homer by Jordan Pickens and nothing else in his six innings of work.

The Snappers kept him from absorbing a loss, at least, by also scoring in the first off Thompson. Trofholz led off the inning with a line drive double down the third baseline. After advancing to third on Anderson's flyout, Trofholz scored on Rottino's single up the middle.

Both teams' offenses were silent after that and the scheduled seven-inning game headed into extra innings. In the eighth, Taubenheim (2-2) allowed four hits and a walk as the Wizards went on top 4-1.

Beloit didn't fold. Will Lewis belted a one-out double and Anderson drove him in with a single. The game ended, however, with Heether flying out to center field.

NOTES: Beloit left only nine men on base in the double-header. Fort Wayne left 12. ...The twinbill drew 1,301 fans. ...The Snappers and Wizards square off again in a matinee at noon Thursday.

Arizona Brewer Box Score:

Wednesday's missing box score has arrived and it includes another outing for Ben Diggins; the Brewers didn't draft 2004 8th round high school LHP Brandon Parillo to hit and play left field, did they? If his name continues to show up in the field, we'll ask the Brewers. Finally, they include the attendance -- eight! A=8! Helena played before 4200+ Thursday night. So yes, the change in atmosphere from one level of rookie ball to another is tremendous...
