Stars Notebook (Through Friday's Action)

Mark McCarter

Huntsville Times

Covering the bases

The Stars are hardly playing any role of "The Comeback Kids'' this season. Going into Saturday's game, they were yet to win - going 0-for-25 - in games they trailed after eight innings. Of late, they have been even more anemic, well, late. Manager Don Money had these stats scribbled on a piece of paper on his desk: Against opponents' relievers, in the last 30 2/3 innings, the Stars have mustered one earned run, only 18 hits, six walks and struck out 22 times. ... Nelson Cruz extended his hitting streak to eight games with a first-inning single Saturday night. In his first seven games back from the disabled list, he was 12-for-30. ...

Milwaukee's promotion this week of outfielder David Krynzel isn't expected to have a domino effect on the Stars. At this point, there are no plans to promote anyone from here to Nashville, where Ryan Knox can step in as the starting center fielder....

The Stars are at 22 players, one short, as it is, with no replacement yet for Matt Ford, who was released earlier in the week. ... Reliever Ryan Miller continues to rehab. He'll throw live batting practice this week to check his progress. ... Fellow reliever Jerome Gamble is still out for several more weeks, according to Money. He's playing catch on the side, but he's not ready to pitch. ...

There was an old Brewers reunion Saturday night. Scouting the game for the Pirates, and popping in to see Money, was former pitcher Pete Vuckovich, a Cy Young winner for Milwaukee. Movie buffs will remember Vuckovich as Klu Haywood in "Major League." ... Fitting, then, as official scorer Don Rizzardi noted, there would be a player named Serrano (Mississippi catcher Ray) in the game.

Ex-Star Dusty Wathan had three homers, including a grand slam, for Triple-A Buffalo Thursday night. ... The Stars won't see any immediate impact from this week's baseball draft. Historically, Milwaukee scouting director Jack Zduriencik leans toward high school prospects. A guess: The Brewers' No. 1 pick will be Asheville, N.C., high school star Cameron Maybin. ... If you're counting, it'll be eight games in a row the Stars will be playing Mississippi. "The schedule,'' Money said, "is ridiculous.'' ... Here's your Stars' clubhouse golf rankings: coach Rich Sauveur, Matt DeWitt, Glenn Woolard and Dana Eveland. Hmmm. All pitchers. Coincidence?

Around the league

Going into Saturday's play, the Southern League South was a traffic jam. Jacksonville, Mississippi and Montgomery were all tied at 28-27, with Birmingham a half-game back at 27-27. Meanwhile, West Tenn and Carolina are bunched at the top of the SL North, with everybody else in their dust. The Mudcats and Diamond Jaxx opened a four-game series at Carolina last night. ... West Tenn ace Rich Hill, who led the league with 90 strikeouts in 58 innings, was promoted last week to Triple-A and whiffed 14 in his debut. ... Jacksonville's Chad Billingsley struck out 12, including six in a row, in the Suns' win Thursday against Mobile. ... Chelsea Cooley, Miss USA 2005 and Miss North Carolina, will be at the Mudcats' game on June 13. The same night, at Joe Davis Stadium, a family of four, for $40, will get four tickets, four hot dogs and four soft drinks. Who wins that promotional war?

Brewings

Triple-A Nashville Sounds (30-26, first place in Pacific Coast League American Division): 1B Prince Fielder PCL Player of the Week with seven homers, 16 RBIs, 32 total bases, 1.280 slugging percentage and .360 average.

Single-A Brevard County Manatees (21-32, fifth in Florida State East Division): P Ty Taubenheim 8-1, 2.55 ERA

Single-A West Virginia Power (17-37, seventh in South Atlantic League Northern Division): SS Alcides Escobar .307, 14 SBs

On deck

The Stars host Mississippi today at 2:05. Fans who bring their church bulletins will be admitted for half-price. Monday's game is 7:05, with a 12:05 start on Tuesday. After a two-game visit to Chattanooga, the Stars are back Friday to host the Lookouts.

Life's no dream for Fielder

Prospect severs ties with father

Tom Haudricourt, Journal-Sentinel

Since being selected in the first round of the 2002 draft out of high school by the Milwaukee Brewers, Prince Fielder has been one of the youngest players in his league on a yearly basis.

Accordingly, the 21-year-old first baseman has had to grow up fast, like it or not.

Complicating matters for Fielder is a tragic family situation created by his father, former big-league slugger Cecil Fielder. With a series of gambling losses and financial boondoggles, he squandered most of the family's considerable fortune, resulting in the loss of their $3.7 million home in Melbourne, Fla.

When Cecil Fielder's 13-year major-league career ended in 1998, he had amassed approximately $47 million in earnings. It took him about five years to fritter it away, mostly through losses at casinos, including the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, N.J.

Failed business ventures, such as Big Daddy Classic Cars and a small airplane service, also contributed to the family bankruptcy. Before the Fielders knew what hit them, they were swamped by lawsuits, liens on their property and process servers.

Prince Fielder discovered how bad the situation had become in startling fashion in August 2002, while playing for the Class A Beloit Snappers. He came off the field one day and was handed papers by a process server, who was searching for his runaway father.

Though Prince Fielder declined to get into the details of the sordid affair, it is assumed he was able to protect the $2.4 million signing bonus he received from the Brewers after being the seventh player drafted in 2002.

Prince remains in contact with his mother, Stacey, who filed for divorce, and sister, Ceclynn, who were forced to move out of the family mansion when a bank foreclosed on the mortgage. But he has cut all ties with his father, who no longer comes to watch the hitting prodigy play minor-league games.

"I can't think about it," said Fielder, who has been on a home-run spree of late at Class AAA Nashville. "I've got games to play. I wish it didn't happen, but there's nothing I can do about it now."

A feature by HBO's "Real Sports" over the off-season showed mother and daughter standing outside of the boarded-up mansion, peering through locked gates. Stacey Fielder had only recently recovered from a serious auto accident.

With a 10-month-old son and a fiancée, Prince Fielder has his own family unit to support. Ever aware of the horrors visited on his mother and sister by his father's gambling, he says his budding new family helps him get through the tough times.

"It takes your mind off baseball at times," he said. "You don't want to think about baseball all the time, for six months."

Not to mention the ruination of his family by a father no longer welcome to watch his talented son, a chip off the baseball block, sock tape-measure home runs.

Not his main focus

When the Brewers selected second baseman Rickie Weeks with the second pick of the 2003 draft, they gave him a five-year major-league contract guaranteed at $4.8 million with a chance to make $5.5 million.

To max out that deal, Weeks had to make the Brewers' opening day roster in 2004. The package was worth $5.325 million if he earned a roster spot at the start of this season.

The last chance to earn incentives comes next year, when Weeks' deal is worth $5.1 million if he is on the opening day roster. After that, the minimum of $4.8 million is the best he can do.

"The last time I looked at that was when I was drafted," said Weeks. "After that, I couldn't even tell you what the money is.

"If you worry about that, you put added pressure on yourself. It's hard enough to come out here every day and try to hit a baseball. The more pressure you put on yourself, the harder it is to play the game."

By giving the first major-league contract in club history to a draft pick, the Brewers will run out of minor-league options on Weeks by 2007. Considering the offensive binge he has been on at Nashville (.326, 14 doubles, 8 triples, 11 home runs, 45 RBI entering the weekend), that shouldn't be a problem.

As for his high profile in the minors, Weeks said, "You're going to have certain critics saying, 'He should be doing this, doing that.' Nobody has higher expectations than I do."

North of the border

Because of work visa restrictions in the United States in the wake of 9/11, all players selected in the amateur draft Tuesday out of Canada will be unable to play rookie ball this season. That hasn't stopped the Brewers from doing extensive scouting in that country, however.

General manager Doug Melvin and assistant Gord Ash are Canadians, so it stands to reason they would be in tune with prospects in that country. But the primary force behind the club's emphasis on Canadian baseball is Dick Groch, Melvin's top scout.

"Dick was a pitching coach for the Canadian national team for a number of years so he has a good background up there," said Ash. "Forget that Doug and I are Canadian. The fact that Dick has that background is very important."

The Brewers drafted seven Canadian players last year, more than twice as many as any other club. They gave six-figure signing bonuses to two right-handers - Quebec's Alexandre Periard ($243,000) and Nova Scotia's Greg Langille ($107,000).

Though baseball is suffering at the grass-roots level in Canada due to financial cutbacks, more players are making it to the big leagues out of that country, including stars such as Eric Gagne, Jason Bay and Justin Morneau, as well as impressive Colorado rookie left-hander Jeff Francis.

"We believe there is talent there," said Ash. "It is under-evaluated. It's not like you're competing against 30 clubs. There's about 10 or 12 that are really into it, and the rest just do the surface.

"A lot of the kids from there are late bloomers because they haven't had the background in the game. You've got colleges coming north and looking for kids to give scholarships to because they don't have scholarships in Canada."

The top high school players this year are first baseman Nick Weglarz of Stevensville, Ontario, and right-hander Ivan Rusova of Toronto. Right-handers Jonathan Forest of the University of British Columbia and Kyle Cuthbertson of Lethbridge (Alberta) Community College also should go in the early rounds.

I don't think it matters that much that Cruz is in AA as opposed to AAA. The Brewers decided to challenge Brad Nelson and put him in AAA. Cruz could make the jump from AA to the majors if they so choose. AAA is not a requirement to get to the bigs.

Final: Mississippi (Braves) 8, Huntsville 1

So much for momentum -- tossed away in one disastrous 9th inning by a 27-year-old veteran with 29 major league appearances under his belt...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Scott Thorman?s three-run home run put Mississippi ahead to stay during a five-run ninth inning rally that resulted in an 8-5 win over Huntsville Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The Braves won for the eighth time in nine games to improve to 29-28 and remained one game behind South Division leaders Jacksonville and Montgomery, both of whom won Sunday afternoon. The Stars dropped to 23-34 and lost for the 12th time in their last 15 home games. Mississippi has taken eight of the last nine games between the two teams and leads the season series 9-3.

Matt DeWitt opened the ninth inning on the hill for the Stars and was greeted by a pinch-hit home run by Jon Schuerholz, his second of the season, to trim the Stars lead to 5-4. Gregor Blanco dropped down a bunt base hit and Jeff Francoeur walked with one out before Thorman jumped on the first pitch he saw and launched a three-run clout to give the Braves a 7-5 lead. It was Thorman?s ninth of the year, second in three games and gave him 50 runs batted in on the season. Brian McCann followed by reaching on a two-base throwing error by DeWitt and scored with two outs when Juan Velasquez singled to right and catcher Jeff Winchester could not cleanly handle Nelson Cruz?s throw to the plate from right field.

The two home runs allowed by DeWitt in the ninth were the first two he had given up on the season and marked the first time the Stars had allowed more than one home run in an inning. The Braves became the fourth team to score five runs in a frame against the Stars and the third to do it in the ninth inning and hit three home runs in a game for the first time. Jorge Vasquez retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season and third over the last five games.

Winchester?s run-scoring single and a pinch-hit, sacrifice fly by Tony Zuniga put the Stars ahead 5-3 in the eighth. Winchester had doubled in the Stars first two runs in the fourth inning to knock in three runs in a game for the first time this season and has knocked in 14 of his 15 runs at home.

The Stars stranded Enrique Cruz at third base with one out in the fifth and failed to snap a 2-2 tie before Nelson Cruz led off the sixth with his 12th home run of the year to give the home team a 3-2 edge. Vinny Rottino followed with a triple but was left stranded at third base after Ben Van Idersinte, Winchester and Brandon Gemoll could not drive him in. Wes Timmons? leadoff home run in the seventh inning off of Dennis Sarfate tied the game at three and a string of 23 innings without giving up a long ball for the Stars stater. It was Timmons? third of the season and second at Joe Davis Stadium. Nelson Cruz, who extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games, bounced into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded in the seventh.

The series continues Monday night with left-hander Manny Parra taking the hill against Braves right-hander Andrew Lerew. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Rickie has got great range, he just seldom picks the right direction to utilize it. I love the 'he's no Ozzie Smith'http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif He might even qualify for 'he's no Soriano' (defensively that is)

On a completely different subject, It has taken me two whole days to change my mind on Nelson Cruz - If and when there is a place for him, he really is AAA ready. He's one of those guys who looks awful when he doesn't hit. Quite capable of coming to bat and taking 3 huge hacks whatever the state of the game or the opposing pitcher, and when he strikes out it looks awful. But ultimately the numbers don't lie and his OPS trumps those gritty battlers who foul off numerous pitches before hitting a line drive straight to a fielder.

I'd be tempted to move him quickly before the rest of our current bunch of losers contaminate him. There really is no reason for this team to be this bad, yet time after time they find a way to turn victory into defeat. I can't even find it in my heart to blame Don Money, the poor guy seems to have tried everything except managing in a tutu and they just keep finding ways to lose for him.

If I sound particuarily vitriolic - it is because I am. I had to suffer todays last two innings debacle sitting behind a group of Atlanta Braves fans, who having griped all game, got all smug and kept saying loudly 'thats Braves baseball' as we handed one of the worst defensive teams I've seen (apart from us) another win.

I have seen this team play well, (i.e. against a great Carolina team on their first home stand) and they really are so much better than this, but their whole approach can be described by a word DHonks used recently to describe Rickie's D - nonchalant (at least thats the polite word that best describes them)

I really do live in hope that they can turn this round , but they really are a frustrating bunch to watch!
