West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Richardson's grand slam lifts the Power in victory

Clay Blevins and Grant Richardson both hit home runs in Saturday night?s game against the Lakewood BlueClaws at Appalachian Power Park. Blevins hit a three-run homer and Richardson hit the first Power grand slam of the year as the Power went on to beat the BlueClaws 10-0.

In the bottom of the first inning Tony Festa drew a bases loaded walk to give the Power a 1-0 lead. On the very next pitch, Richardson hit the first grand slam in Power history. The home run was his third of the season and it gave the Power a 5-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second Hernan Iribarren slapped a double and right fielder Ryan Frith overthrew the cut off man, allowing Blevins to score and make it 6-0 Power. Blevins hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning, the three-run shot gave the Power a 9-0 lead. Blevins also brought in the final run of the game on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Josh Wahpepah and Ben Stanczyk combined to pitch the second shutout of the season for the Power.

Wahpepah (3-3) pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out six batters to earn the victory, and Carlos Carrasco (1-7) obtained the loss. The Power improve to 21-41 with the win and the BlueClaws move to 21-41 with the loss.

On Sunday afternoon the Power will continue last Monday night?s game, which was suspended after the top of the eleventh inning in Lakewood. The continuation will begin at 1:05 PM (12:05 Central), and the second game will begin after the first game is finished. In the second game RHP Yovani Gallardo (0-3, 3.57) will throw the for Power and the BlueClaws will counter with right handed pitcher Derrick Griffith (2-4, 4.42).

Manny Parra pitched eight stellar innings to lead Huntsville past Chattanooga 2-1 Saturday night in the final game of a two-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars took both games in the set to win back-to-back home games for the first time since April 30 and May 1 to improve to 26-37, while the Lookouts dropped to 24-39. The Stars extended their winning streak to three, the longest win string since a four-game sweep of Tennessee from April 28 to May 1.

Parra allowed a single to Norris Hopper, the first hitter he faced, and went on to retire the next 17 hitters before Hopper singled with two outs in the sixth. Jeff Bannon followed with a base hit before D?Angelo Jimenez struck out to end the inning. Parra issued his only walk of the night to Brian Peterson with two outs in the seventh and Junior Ruiz followed with a single before Rick Asadoorian lined out to left field to end the inning.

The Stars scored the first run of the night in the first inning when Tony Gwynn, Jr. singled with one out, moved to second base on a walk to Vinny Rottino and crossed the plate on a two-out single by Tony Zuniga, who has knocked in runs in five of his last seven starts. Huntsville added an unearned run in the fifth when Guilder Rodriguez walked with one out, moved to second base on a Parra sacrifice, stayed put when Kennard Bibbs walked and scored when Stephen Smitherman at first base could not handle a throw from second baseman Kevin Howard on a Gwynn ground ball.

Phil Dumatrait lasted seven innings for Chattanooga and suffered the loss after allowing only one earned run on four hits. The southpaw dropped to 1-7 despite a 2.55 earned run average, which includes only one earned run allowed over 14 innings in two starts at Joe Davis Stadium.

Chattanooga scored its only run in the eighth when Hopper doubled with one out, advanced to third on a Bannon single before Jimenez lined out to second base. Rodriguez tried to double off Bannon but first baseman Rottino mishandled the throw, allowing Hopper to score and Bannon to advance to second base. Smitherman then struck out for the final out of the inning. Parra?s eight frames of work represents the longest outing by any Stars starter and he has now worked at least seven innings in four of his last six turns. Mitch Stetter retired the side in order in the ninth to nail down his fifth save of the season.

Stars? outfielder Nelson Cruz singled in four at-bats to push his hitting streak to five and he has now hit safely in 14 out of 15 overall and eight of the last nine home games.

The Stars are off on Sunday and open a three-game set with West Tenn on Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville will send right-hander Glenn Woolard to the hill against Diamond Jaxx left-hander Carmen Pignatiello. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Sounds Fall To I-Cubs, 4-3; Rivera Homers Again

DES MOINES -- Sounds catcher Mike Rivera homered for the third straight game but Iowa third baseman Nate Frese was a one-man show, driving in all four runs in the Cubs' 4-3 victory over Nashville on Saturday evening at Principal Park.

With the loss, Nashville (32-31) fell a half-game behind Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

Frese spotted the Cubs a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a one-out three-run homer off Sounds starter Jeff Housman, the infielder's third roundtripper of the year.

Trent Durrington put Nashville on the board in the top of the fifth with a two-out solo blast off Cubs starter Rich Hill. The tater was the Aussie's third of the season.

Rivera tied the affair at 3-3 an inning later when he crushed his third home run in the last three games, a two-run jack off I-Cubs reliever Will Cunnane.

www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-11.mp3

Frese put Iowa on top for good in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI single against Housman that plated Calvin Murray with the game-winning run.

Cunnane (1-1) "pulled a Reyes" for Iowa, earning the victory after blowing his second save of the season. The veteran allowed two runs in his two frames of work. Jermaine Van Buren recorded the final six outs to record his sixth save for the Cubs.

Housman (2-6) was dealt a loss in his fifth consecutive start after surrendering all four Cubs runs in his 6 2/3 innings.

The team wrap up the four-game series with a 1:05 p.m. CT finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Rick Helling (4-3, 4.74) will make the start for the Sounds and square off against Iowa southpaw Phil Norton (1-3, 6.79).

Stars Parra wins while out of sync

By JOHN FERRY

Huntsville Times Sports Staff jferry@htimes.com

Left-hander Manny Parra felt his starts the previous five or six games had been better.

"I didn't have my best stuff tonight," the Huntsville pitcher said after going eight innings against Chattanooga on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

Parra said two factors made a big difference this time.

"Throwing my off-speed pitches for strikes saved me," he said. "And the weather (a 14 miles per hour wind blowing across from right field to left) allowed fly balls to be knocked down."

Parra threw 100 pitches, 66 for strikes, then Mitch Stetter put Chattanooga down in order in the ninth.

The Stars left with a 2-1 victory, Huntsville's third straight win.

Parra (3-5) also thinks Huntsville's team, now 26-37, has better days ahead.

"Our hitting is going to come around," he said. "We just have to put it all together."

Parra struck out seven and walked one.

The Stars scored in the first inning when Tony Gwynn Jr. produced a one-out single to center, and with two outs Tony Zuniga got him home with a single to center.

In the fifth, Huntsville got an unearned run. Guilder Rodriguez walked, was sacrificed to second by Parra and scored as Gwynn reached when Chattanooga first baseman Stephen Smitherman mishandled a throw.

Chattanooga scored an unearned run in the eighth. The Lookouts out-hit the Stars 6-5 but hurt themselves with three errors. Phil Dumatrait, who allowed four hits over seven innings, took the loss.

Power pounds Lakewood early, often in 10-0 romp

First-inning grand slam sets tone

By Doug Smock

Charleston Gazette Staff Writer

The Lakewood BlueClaws seemingly had just jumped off the bus Saturday when they were jumped on by the West Virginia Power.

Grant Richardson blasted a grand-slam homer in the first inning to send the Power to its biggest rout of the year, 10-0, before 3,484 recipients of free caps at Appalachian Power Park.

Clay Blevins jumped into the act in the third inning. The left-handed hitting catcher, batting just .197 coming into the game, pulled his first career homer over the Powerball sign. That accounted for three more runs, giving starter Josh Wahpepah more than enough cushion.

?It felt great. I?ve been waiting awhile for that,? Blevins said.

He said he is seeing the benefits of the Power?s new batting cage, set indoors in the old Morris Square building. As renovation of the large brick structure continued, the batting cage wasn?t operational until a month or so into the season.

The cage gave the Power hitters a chance to work on their strokes during an afternoon thunderstorm that blew over Charleston.

?We?ve been doing a lot of work early in the cages before we come on the field,? said Power manager Ramon Aviles. ?Hopefully, they can be more consistent with their swings. Grant?s grand slam was huge and Blevins? three-run homer, that put the game out of reach.?

The Power jumped into a tie with Lakewood in the battle to avoid the cellar in the South Atlantic League?s Northern Division. West Virginia leads the season series 3-1.

Lakewood starter Carlos Carrasco was the poor soul who served up the gopher balls to Richardson and Blevins, falling to 1-7 in the process. After giving up a Hernan Iribarren single, Carrasco put himself in trouble by walking Carlos Corporan, hitting Josh Brady with a pitch and walking Tony Festa with the bases loaded.

That gave Richardson the chance at a meaty offering, which he launched into the Contemporary Galleries parking lot beyond the left-field foul pole.

?The pitcher was in a hole and he just lost a guy with the bases loaded,? Richardson said. ?He had to come with a fastball and when you?re sitting ?dead red,? you better not miss that pitch.?

From there, Wahpepah (3-3) took an 89-pitch night through seven innings, yielding just four hits and walking one. Ben Stanczyk was about as flawless over the final two frames of the 2-hour, 14-minute game.

?It was a pretty typical Wahpepah outing,? said pitching coach John Curtis. ?He threw a little harder tonight than he has, got a team that had a long bus trip [Friday] night. He brought the game to them and did a great job.?

The series continues today with an earlier Sunday start, 1:05 p.m. (12:05 Central). The teams will finish a game suspended last Monday at Lakewood, with the BlueClaws about to bat in the bottom of the 11th in a 7-7 game. Thirty minutes after that game finishes, the teams will play a seven-inning game.

Power points

Blevins and Richardson both went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Richardson scored three times, the third coming after a bizarre single and two-base error. When BlueClaws left-fielder Sean Gamble picked up Richardson?s shot down the third-base line ? by the Lakewood bullpen, no less ? he thought the ball was foul and flipped it to a fan in the stands. Richardson, who never made a turn to second, was awarded two bases.

?I tell you what, I thought the first baseman had caught it,? he said. ?That?s why I ran right through first base. It happens. I don?t know if his bullpen was telling him it was foul, or what.?

Brady took Carrasco?s errant first-inning pitch off the top of the head. After an examination, he stayed in the game and took his base, but later was replaced by Adam Mannon.

It was the fifth double-digit scoring game for the Power, whose season high is a 13-8 win over Lakewood on June 4.
