Stars notebook (through Friday's games)

Paul Gattis

Huntsville Times

Covering the bases

It's always intriguing to follow baseball's amateur draft, conducted Tuesday and Wednesday, with an eye toward what it could eventually mean for the Huntsville Stars. And among the possibilities are a former Alabama quarterback, the brother of a former Stars star and the No. 1 pick who is hoping to lead Miami to the College World Series and counts Yankees star Alex Rodriguez among his acquaintances.

The Alabama quarterback, of course, is Spencer Pennington, whom the Brewers selected in the 32nd round. It might make more sense, though, for Pennington to return to the Tide for his senior season and take his chances in next year's draft. He was taken in the ninth round coming out of Fayette High before choosing a football scholarship. Because of football obligations and injuries, Pennington has played baseball sparingly. He redshirted in 2004 while recovering from shoulder surgery and got only 35 at-bats this season. It would seem that a season playing full time in college would only enhance Pennington's draft status.

The Brewers drafted another familiar name in the eighth round. Jemile Weeks is a high school shortstop from Altamonte, Fla., and the younger brother of Rickie Weeks - who played in Huntsville last year and is rated the Brewers' No. 1 prospect this year by Baseball America. "We hope some day he becomes like Rickie," Jack Zduriencik, the Brewers scouting director, told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We didn't draft him because he was Rickie's brother."

Miami's Ryan Braun, the Brewers' No. 1 pick, will likely be the first impact player to reach Huntsville and could be on the fast track to Milwaukee because of his college experience. He is hitting .396 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs this season for the Hurricanes. Braun switched to third base from shortstop at Miami and got some advice on the move from a most knowledgeable source. "I had an opportunity to talk to (A-Rod) about the transition and what he went through," Braun told the Journal-Sentinel. "He gave me some pointers and hints. He told me everything he went through." Rodriguez, of course, made the same move when traded to the Yankees. The Brewers also selected Michael Brantley, the son of former major-leaguer Mickey Brantley, in the seventh round.

Another former Star is in the major leagues. Rickie Weeks was promoted to Milwaukee following Friday's game after the Brewers traded second baseman Junior Spivey to Washington for pitcher Tomo Ohka. Spivey was considered a temporary answer at second until Weeks proved he was ready for the jump. At Triple-A Nashville this season, Weeks was hitting .320 with 14 doubles, nine triples, 12 homers and 48 RBIs in 55 games. The bad news, in the former Star department, was that outfielder Dave Krynzel returned to Nashville to make room for Weeks.

The struggling Stars can take solace in knowing this isn't the worst first half in franchise history. The Stars were 25-37 going into Saturday's game against Chattanooga with four games remaining in the first half. The team record for most losses in the first half is 44 in 1991. ...

When Dennis Sarfate homered on Friday night, it sent a dash to the seldom-viewed page of the Stars media notes that details the hitting prowess of the pitchers. Relievers Khalid Ballouli and Alec Zumwalt, who has a double, lead the team with three hits apiece. Starter Dana Eveland might be the best bet for a home run, with both of his hits in 25 at-bats going for doubles. Sarfate was perhaps the least likely candidate for a home run. He was 1-for-21 before the homer with a pitcher-high 11 strikeouts. ...

Anybody noticed that right fielder Nelson Cruz is quietly putting together a monster season? He's hitting .311 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 53 games. That could earn him a promotion, which would hurt Huntsville's offense. Even with Cruz, the Stars have scored 257 runs - fewest in the Southern League. ... The last Stars pitcher to win a game besides Eveland and Sarfate is Glenn Woolard, who beat Carolina 6-3 on May 23. Since then Eveland has won three games and Sarfate two.

Around the league

You couldn't ask for better races in either division. In the North, Carolina leads West Tenn by 1 1/2 games with the first half ending on Thursday. And in the South, Birmingham leads Jacksonville and Mississippi by 1/2 game and Montgomery by 2 1/2. And don't overlook the battle for third place in the North. Tennessee leads the Stars by 1/2 game and Chattanooga by 1 1/2. But overlook that Tennessee is 16 games behind Carolina. ... A closer look at the standings in the South reveals some surprising numbers. Both Birmingham and Mississippi have losing records at home while Jacksonville is .500 at home. All three have winning records on the road. ... Montgomery's Delmon Young was named the league's Player of the Month for May by the company that makes Topps baseball cards. Young, brother of Detroit's Dmitri Young and first pick in the 2003 draft, hit .389 with seven homers and 25 RBIs in May.

Brewings

Triple-A Nashville (32-30, first place in Pacific Coast League's American Division): 1B Prince Fielder is hitting .250 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs.

Single-A Brevard County (22-39, last place in Florida State League's East Division): P Ty Taubenheim is 8-1 with a 2.39 ERA and just 60 hits allowed in 79 innings.

Single-A West Virginia (20-41, last place in South Atlantic League's Northern Division): INF Hernan Iribarren is hitting .314 with 21 stolen bases.

On deck

The Stars have a day off today before hosting West Tenn for three games, starting Monday, to close out the first half. Chattanooga comes to town for a four-game series starting Friday.

Yeah...an Overbay trade could be looming pretty soon. The only thing is that Overbay isn't good enough to net a quality third baseman. He is good enough to get a good outfielder that could replace Jenkins...but I don't think they would ever just flat out bench Jenkins bloated salary. I like Hart, but I don't think he has enough pop in his bat to be a quality outfielder. I've liked Melvin's trades so far...so I'm hoping he'll figure something out.

Final: West Virginia 9, Lakewood (Phillies) 8, 15 innings, completion of Monday's suspended game

Game of the year candidate -- 7-7 after 13 innings, then the fun began in the 14th and 15th...

West Virginia Site Game One Game Notes:

Remember, the Power were visitors in this one, so it wasn't a walk-off...

The first game was picked up in the bottom of the eleventh inning tied at 7-7. In the top of the 14th inning Josh Brady snapped the tie with a two-out RBI single to give the Power an 8-7 lead. The BlueClaws tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the 14th inning on Doug Gredvig?s solo shot. The Power struck again in the top of the 15th inning when Hasan Rasheed delivered a clutch two-out RBI single which eventually led to a Power victory.

West Virginia Game One Box Score:

Linescore incomplete, but batting and pitching lines accurate; pretty wild how Robert Hinton threw five scoreless innings in this game -- two innings Monday, and then three more six days later...

Final: Nashville 7, Iowa (Cubs) 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

DES MOINES -- First baseman Prince Fielder belted a pair of home runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 7-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park in the finale of a four-game series.

With the win, Nashville (33-31) remains a half-game behind Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division and earns a 3-1 series victory against the I-Cubs.

Fielder's two-homer game was his third of the season and upped his team-leading longball total to 15 on the year.

The Brewers' # 2 prospect spotted the Sounds a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot to right off Iowa starter Phil Norton in the top of the first inning. Nashville doubled the lead later in the frame on consecutive two-out RBI singles by red-hot Mike Rivera and Iowa native Brad Nelson.

Nashville tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames to extend the advantage to 7-0. Fielder pounded his second tater of the afternoon in the fifth, a one-out solo shot to center off Norton.

Dave Krynzel, who went 0-for-4 in his first start for the Sounds since returning from Milwaukee, plated the club's sixth run of the afternoon with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly.

Former I-Cub Kevin Orie continued to enjoy a strong campaign against his old team, belting his 11th home run of the year -- a seventh-inning solo shot to left off Kevin McGlinchy -- to close out the Sounds' scoring.

Iowa broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Mike Adams. James Hoffpauir opened the inning with a double then moved up one base on consecutive fly ball outs by Nate Frese and Mark Johnson, whose sacrifice fly brought the score to its final 7-1.

Nashville starter Rick Helling (5-3) logged his best outing of the season, picking up the victory with seven scoreless innings. Norton (1-5) gathered the loss after surrendering five runs over five frames of work for the Cubs.

The Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Monday to begin an eight-game homestand with the 7 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Marlins). Monday's series opener, the first contest between the club in Nashville this season, will feature Sounds right-hander Justin Lehr (5-5, 6.38) taking on Albuquerque righty Nate Bump, who will make his first Triple-A appearance of the season.
