I hope I don't jinx Dana, but it appears that he is dealing again today, so my question is: How long until this guy gets his ticket to AAA? Didn't he pitch at HVille last year also, so shouldn't he be ready for the call up? Let's get this guy on the fast track, since we really don't have any starting pitchers in AAA that can be called "true prospects" anymore.

Yes, Eveland pitching very well, as well as Martin for West Virginia today. Dana also with a base hit, his 4th hit of the season. Alex Zumwalt providing commentary in the radio booth today, he's pretty interesting.

Didn't he pitch at HVille last year also

He only had 4 starts in AA after skipping over A+. Sarfate is pitching almost as well and has been in AA for 1.5 years. He should be the first to get sent to AAA.

Final: Huntsville 2, Mobile (Padres) 0

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Dana Eveland and Mitch Stetter combined on a six-hit shutout in Huntsville?s 2-0 victory over Mobile Wednesday afternoon in the second game of a four-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars squared their second half record at 1-1 and improved to 30-41 overall, while the BayBears dropped to 1-1 in the second half and 29-43 overall. The Stars registered their second shutout of the year, both of which have been 2-0 decisions over Mobile. Huntsville also snapped a three-game losing streak to the BayBears and have now won seven of the 10 games played between the two teams.

Vinny Rottino started the scoring for the Stars with a two-out solo home run in the first inning. It was his fourth of the year and Huntsville?s third off of BayBears starter Brian Whitaker, matched up for a third time against Eveland, in two starts in Mobile.

Brandon Gemoll led off the second inning with a single and moved to third base on a base hit to right field by Enrique Cruz but was thrown out in a rundown trying to score on a Jeff Winchester ground ball. The play allowed Cruz to advance to third and Winchester to second but they were unable to score as Callix Crabbe and Eveland both grounded out. The Stars added their second run in the fourth when Enrique Cruz tripled to start the inning and scored when shortstop Ronnie Merrill couldn?t handle Winchester?s sharply hit ground ball and was charged with an error.

Winchester was hit by a Whitaker pitch with two outs in the sixth, advanced to second base on an infield hit by Crabbe but was gunned down at the plate by right fielder Steve Baker on a single by Eveland, who picked up his fourth hit of the season. Gemoll tripled with one out in the eighth but was cut down trying to score against a drawn-in infield by second baseman Casey Baker, who fielded a sharply hit ground ball by Enrique Cruz and threw to the catcher Luke Carlin for the second out of the inning.

Eveland held Mobile hitless for 3 1/3 innings before Merrill legged out an infield hit. The Stars southpaw yielded just two singles in his six innings of work and has now allowed 16 singles and one home run in his last 33 innings pitched. Eveland walked one and struck out six to earn his fifth straight win, all of which have stopped Stars losing streaks. In succession, he has halted skids of three, four, four, two and two games and matched Enrique Gonzalez of Tennessee for the league lead in wins.

Stetter allowed back-to-back singles to Steve Baker and Luke Carlin with one out in the seventh and walked Casey Baker to load the bases but got out of trouble by inducing pinch-hitter Mike Richardson to ground into an inning-ending double play. Stetter hit Carlin and Baker reached on an infield hit that saw Rottino throw wildly past first base to allow Carlin to get to third with two outs in the ninth. Mobile pitcher Mike Thompson was brought on to pinch-hit and grounded back to Stetter, who took the ball to the bag at first base and stepped on the base to record the final out and earn his sixth save of the season in his longest outing of the year.

The series continues Thursday night with right-hander Dennis Sarfate taking the hill for the Stars against BayBears right-hander Mike Thompson. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Lexington, KY ? The West Virginia Power and Lexington Legends were held scoreless until Chris Clark snapped the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk-off home run to win it for Lexington.

The Legends had the bases loaded with only one out in the fifth inning when Forrest Martin struck out the next two batters in the inning. In the bottom of the ninth inning Lexington had a runner on third base with one out, when Ole Sheldon hit a ground ball to third baseman Tony Festa, who threw out Bryan Triplett at home plate. The Legends grounded into a pair of double plays in the game and the Power grounded into one. Martin started the game for the Power, throwing five scoreless innings and Brian Montalbo threw a pair of scoreless innings out of the bullpen.

Nashville Pre-Game Audio with Infielder Tony Zuniga:

Final: Albuquerque (Marlins) 3, Nashville 2

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Sounds Lose In Bottom Of The Ninth, 3-2

ALBUQUERQUE ? Mark Little drove a run-scoring triple off the glove of Sounds third baseman Chris Barnwell in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Albuquerque Isotopes a 3-2 win over Nashville on Wednesday evening at Isotopes Park in the second game of a four-game series.

With the loss, Nashville (39-35) saw its lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division reduced to 2 ½ games following an afternoon victory by second-place Memphis. The defeat was the Sounds? fifth in an opponent?s last at-bat this season.

Josh Wilson opened the Albuquerque ninth with a bloop single to center off Jeff Bennett, the infielder?s first hit in 29 at-bats against Sounds pitching this season. After the Nashville reliever fanned Isotopes pitcher Ben Howard, Little delivered his game-winning knock to score Wilson.

The Sounds jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of runs against Albuquerque starter Jeff Fulchino in the top of the first inning. Dave Krynzel led off with a single and stole his tenth base of the season. Trent Durrington followed with an RBI single to put the Sounds on the board and extend his hitting streak to 14 games, matching the longest by a Nashville player this season. Three batters later, Brad Nelson plated Durrington with an RBI groundout.

The Isotopes placed runners in scoring position against Nashville starter Rick Helling in four of the first five innings but failed to score. Krynzel nixed an Albuquerque scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, throwing out former Sound Jason Wood at the plate as he attempted to score on Derek Wathan?s fly ball.

Albuquerque finally broke through against Helling in the sixth, tying the contest with two runs. The Isotopes loaded the bases with none out. Todd Sears and Wood singled, then Josh Willingham was hit by a pitch. Matt Padgett put the home team on the board with an RBI single to right. After Helling retired Wathan on a shallow fly to left, Wilson tied the affair with a sacrifice fly that scored Wood.

Howard (2-2) hurled three scoreless frames to earn the victory for Albuquerque, while Bennett (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season after surrendering the game-winner in the ninth.

Helling took a no-decision despite tossing his team-leading seventh quality start for Nashville, all coming in his last nine outings. The veteran allowed two runs on seven hits over seven frames.

The teams continue the series with an 8:05 p.m. CT contest on Thursday evening. Right-hander Justin Lehr (6-6, 4.95) takes the hill for Nashville to face Isotopes right-hander Peter Bauer (3-4, 6.44).

Nashville Box Score:

Dave Krynzel 11-for-15 in SB attempts; you have to admit, Rick Helling?s been solid ? still, as always, a fly ball pitcher as evidenced here?

Another day for Dana

With a rotation lacking in depth, it's good to see Dana Eveland's turn come around again, and Wednesday, he didn't disappoint at all........ Eveland and Mitch Stetter, who had not allowed a hit in his last seven innings of relief, combined on the Stars' first shutout since April 19, when by coincidence, the Stars blanked Mobile behind Dennis Sarfate, who pitches Thursday against the pitcher he beat that day, Mike Thompson....... Eveland did not allow a hit until the 4th inning, and two hits in all, in winning his 5th straight game, all of which have stopped losing streaks, and his 8th of the season, which was Ryan Costello's team-leading total last year........

Eveland has allowed just 17 hits, 16 of them singles, in 33 innings in those five games, striking out 23, walking 10, and boasting a 1.09 ERA....... Will Dana win 10 for the Stars, or will Nashville, frothing at the mouth to get his services to add to a staff that has a 4.60 ERA, 5th in the PCL?........ Hopefully, the Stars will hang on to him as long as he can, but it seems Dana has little left to prove here........ In beating Mobile, he becomes the first pitcher since Derek Lee, in April 2003, to win four games in a month. With his regular rest, he'll have one more start -- on June 28 vs. Jacksonville -- in which to win his 5th, something no one has done since Brett Laxton in 1998.

Vinny Rottino provided the first run for the Stars, a two-out solo HR in the opening inning..... It was the 3rd this year off Brian Whitaker, a frequent whipping boy for our side. This was Whitaker's 9th start against Huntsville and going back to last year, he's 1-6 with a 4.81 ERA and two no-decision games, one of them against Eveland on April 18........ In the 4th, Enrique Cruz scored after leading off with a line-drive triple to center, coming home when Ronnie Merrill couldn't handle Jeff Winchester's sharply hit ground ball.

Stetter came on in the 7th, but for a pitcher who had not allowed a run in his last five appearances, it became an unexpected nail-biter........ With one out in the 7th, Stetter loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk to Casey Baker, but Mike Richardson, pinch-hitting for former Brewer farmhand Craig Breslow, hit a one-hop liner on a 2-and-0 pitch right to Enrique Cruz, who shoveled to Callix Crabbe, who completed the game-saving double play....... The 8th inning was quiet for Stetter, who got three fly outs in facing four hitters, but the 9th was cardiac time again........ After getting Corey Smith to ground out back to the box and striking out Baker, he hit catcher Luke Carlin in the back of the left foot on a 1-2 pitch. Casey Baker then hit a 2-1 pitch to Rottino, who threw high over the head of Brandon Gemoll, bouncing off the wall, and caroming to right field, allowing Carlin to advance to third........ With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Gary Jones sent pitcher Mike Thompson, 2-for-17, to pinch-hit....... Interesting move...... But Thompson bounced a a 1-1 pitch back to Stetter, who barehanded the ball, carrying his momentum to the bag, where he made the putout at first himself........ That earned Stetter his 6th save, passing Matt DeWitt for the club lead.

Kennard Bibbs snapped an 0-for-10 slump with a single to right in the 3rd inning........ Nelson Cruz saw his hitting streak snapped at 12 games, a season-high, but Enrique stretched his to seven with a single in the 2nd. He's 10-for-27 (.370) in that stretch....... Gemoll lifted his average to a season-high .247........ Ben Van Iderstine did not start, but in the # 7 hole this year, he's 11-for-21....... Winchester is 3-for-24 in his last eight games......... For those who didn't hear this game on the radio, Brett Pollock had pitcher Alec Zumwalt as his guest late in the game, and it was a true treat.

Happy to say Derek Lee, a fan favorite in Huntsville for five years until he signed with the Blue Jays as a free agent after the 2003 season, then spent most of 2004 on the disabled list, is back in professional baseball..... He has been signed by the Texas Rangers and assigned to Class AAA - Oklahoma.

Final: Vero Beach (Dodgers) 5, Brevard County 3

Brevard County Site Game Summary:

DODGERS TAKE SECOND HALF OPENER

VIERA, FL ? As the second half of the season kicked off, the Manatees were unable to start off in the right foot as the Vero Beach Dodgers took game one 5-3 Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium.

The Dodgers started off early against reigning FSL pitcher of the week Josh Habel as they tagged him for three runs in the third inning. After an initial fly-out, the next four batters would reach base on Habel. A double, a single, a throwing error and another single would produce two of the three third-inning runs. The third scored on a sacrifice fly before the inning would be put to rest on a fly-out.

But the Manatees would not let the game get out of reach. They tabbed starter Julio Pimentel for a run in the bottom of the frame to keep the score at 3-1. As proof that lead-off walks will kill a team, Ben Diggins started off the bottom of the inning with a walk and would advance to third on a wild pitch and a groundout. Ozzie Chavez would bring Diggins in with an infield single to second before Drew Anderson would ground out to end the inning.

Vero would answer back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth before the Manatees would get their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jeff Eure led off the inning and was immediately hit by a pitch to put him on first. Steve Sollmann and Travis Ezi would score Eure on back-to-back singles to cut it to a 4-2 game. A ground ball to right by Anderson would bring in Sollmann and give the ?Tees their final run. Ezi ended the inning in a run down after Anderson was nearly picked off of first.

Brevard was sat down on back-to-back-to-back 1-2-3 innings by Dodger fireballer Hong-Chih Kuo before turning the game over to reliever Mark Alexander to pick up his tenth save.

The Manatees take their game on the road for a six-game road trip splitting between Palm Beach and Jupiter for three games apiece. All-Star Carlos Villanueva takes the mound on Thursday for BC as he goes up against Jose Garcia for the Cardinals.

Final: Helena 9, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 8, ten innings

O's drop 2nd straight game to Brewers

By MICHAEL HEINBACH of the Missoulian&nbsp &nbsp &nbsp &nbsp

For a brief moment it seemed the Missoula Osprey just might pull off their first win of the young Pioneer League season during Wednesday night's three-hour, 39-minute epic. Instead, the O's fell for the second times in as many games.

It took 10 innings at Play Ball Park, but the Helena Brewers thwarted a final Osprey threat and beat the home team 9-8 before 1,879 fans.

The loss dropped the Osprey to 0-2, but Missoula manager Hector De La Cruz saw improvement in his club's performance following a 16-3 drubbing at hands of the same Helena squad on opening night.

"Yeah, yeah. It was definitely a much better effort from last night," De La Cruz said. "They're coming around. I liked what I saw from them tonight and they will get their wins."

Missoula dug itself a hole early and it appeared Helena might echo its performance of Tuesday. The Brewers got to Missoula starter Derik Nippert for two runs in the top of the first, one each in the second and third frames and two more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.

"We got a little shaky in the beginning from our starter," De La Cruz said. "After that he settled down and the relievers mostly did a good job."

In fact Nippert (0-1) started getting ahead of hitters as early as the second inning. Despite allowing runs, Nippert tossed first-pitch strikes to 12 consecutive batters, a good sign he was gaining control.

A two-out, two-run home run by Helena designated hitter Angel Salome - his second of the season - staked the Brewers to a 6-1 lead after three innings.

Helena first baseman John Alonso led the Brewers offense, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs.

But Missoula showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth when first baseman Osvaldo Diaz leadoff with an single and was driven in by Rusty Ryal's double. Ryal, a 14th-round selection in this year's draft from Oklahoma State, came home on a fielder's choice, cutting Missoula's deficit to 6-3.

Trailing 7-5, the Osprey took their first lead of the season with a three-run burst in the bottom of the seventh. Three straight singles by Jayson Santiago, Pedro Ciriaco and Jo Jo Batten put Missoula ahead.

But the Brewers scored one in the eighth on a two-base error by Missoula pitcher Vince Davis to tie it 8-8.

With men on first and second, Davis relieved Vince Bongiovanni. Before he threw a single pitch, Davis attempted to pick Michael Bell off first. But his throw sailed past first and into foul territory in right field, allowing Darren Ford to score the tying run.

With the Osprey bullpen depleted, De La Cruz was forced to use Davis the rest of the way.

It stood knotted at eight until the 10th, when Brewers second baseman Ryan Crew began the frame with a triple. He came around on Ford's single, which eventually pinned the loss on Davis (0-1).

Davis, in his second year in Missoula, threw 3 1-3 innings, allowing just the two 10th-inning hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Despite the blemish on his record, Davis was easily the most effective of the O's four pitchers on the evening.

Missoula made one last charge in the bottom of the tenth. But after his one-out double, Ryal, who finished 3-for-6, was left stranded at second.

"These guys have a great attitude and they're starting to play together as a team," De La Cruz said. "They're excited to play together and they're going to play out this thing. They're all doing a good job. After the game we played last night and the way they played today... that's got to tell you something."

Helena Box Score:

Not a bad 2nd pro game for 12 round juco first baseman John Alonso; both Alonso and Ryan Crew just one hit shy of a cycle; Angel Salome draws two walks in addition to his HR; you?ll always have errors in rookie ball ? 3B Matt Gamel commits two in his debut; the pitching star is the 2004 undrafted free agent, Richard Breshears?

Nice game from Willcutt, he will be interesting to follow.....

check out the articles on Ryan Crew from the draft thread - he has a nice little resume, and could be interesting to watch...

Salome's 2 walks were both of the intentional variety, as they were trying to get to Gamel, who had 3 k's to go along with his 2 errors.

Also, wanted to note that Jim Callis loves out shortstop Bell, and put him into his list in the 10th round of his dream draft....we got him in the 15th....

anyone getting concerned about Sargent Lou Production

Cap'n Lou was fun and all, I mean, we had some good times together, but I've moved on to Angel now. No hard feelings Lou, and I hope we can still be friends.
