Taubenheim is definitely not a strike-out machine, but man is he efficient. On a sidenote for Brevard County, Steve Sollman with a 3 for 3 effort and a walk. After struggling for much of season, if I'm not mistaken Sollman has slowly increased his Batting Average by about 20 points in the last three weeks. He still doesn't seem to show much gap power, and at 23 maybe he's a tick old for A+, but it's just nice to see a little hitting from that team. It's also nice to have Adam Heether playing everyday.

Final: West Virginia 6, Lake County (Indians) 4

Power win their first home game of the second half...

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

POWER USE TWO-RUN 7TH INNING TO BEAT THE CAPTAINS

Charleston, WV ? The West Virginia Power and Lake County Captains were tied at 4-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning of Saturday night?s game at Appalachian Power Park. In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs, Grant Richardson delivered a two-run double to give the Power the lead and they never looked back, beating the Captains 6-4.

Wyatt Toregas drove in the first run of the game on an RBI groundout in the top of the first inning to give the Captains a 1-0 lead. The Captains took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Juan Valdes reached on a fielder?s choice and drove in Fernando Pacheco.

The Power scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take their first lead of the game. Hasan Rasheed scored the first run of the inning when Tony Festa hit a groundball that went through the legs of Lake County first baseman Fernando Pacheco. Alcides Escobar delivered a two-out RBI single to tie the game and later in the inning Escobar drew a throw from catcher Toregas, and killed just enough time to allow Clay Blevins to score before he was tagged out between second and first base. Hernan Iribarren?s RBI groundout in the bottom of the fifth inning gave the Power a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh inning Toregas drove in Valdes with an RBI single, and Mike Butia grounded into a double play, which scored Brian Finegan to tie the game at 4-4. In the bottom of the seventh inning, with two outs and two runners on, Richardson delivered his two-run double to plate the final two runs of the game.

Derek DeCarlo (3-3) earned the victory, Dave Johnson (1) earned the save and Cody Bunkleman (0-3) obtained the loss. The Power improve to 2-3 in the second half with the win and the Captains fall to 2-3 with the loss.

The Power will finish the weekend series with Lake County on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. RHP Josh Wahpepah (4-3, 4.00) will throw for the Power and the Captains will counter with LHP Chuck Lofgren (1-0, 1.82). The first pitch is scheduled for 2:05 PM (1:05 Central).

West Virginia Box Score:

Don't want to start on a down note -- but Hernan Iribarren and Alcides Escobar have now combined for 40 errors -- two unearned runs almost cost the squad here; then again, it's easier to develop defensive skills down the road, isn't it? And darn, they appear to be a dynamic combo...

Nashville Site Press Release:

This decision was a no-brainer...

The Pacific Coast League office has added Sounds outfielder Corey Hart to the circuit?s All-Star team as a reserve, filling the spot vacated by Trent Durrington?s promotion to Milwaukee.

Hart, batting .301 on the year, leads the Sounds with 80 hits and 20 doubles and ranks second on the club with 130 total bases and 46 runs scored. The 23-year-old has been Nashville?s hottest hitter of late, batting .396 (46-for-110) in his last 27 games.

He will participate in his fourth consecutive mid-season All-Star competition (California League in 2002, Southern League in 2003, and Triple-A in 2004).

The 2005 Triple-A All-Star Game, which pits stars of the Pacific Coast League against stars of the International League, will occur on Wednesday, July 13 at Raley Field in Sacramento, California. Game time is 9:05 p.m. CT.

OKLAHOMA CITY ? The Nashville Sounds got back on the winning track on Saturday evening, posting an 8-1 victory over the Oklahoma RedHawks at SBC Bricktown Ballpark in the opener of a four-game series.

With the victory, Nashville (41-36) extended its lead back to 2 ½ games over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division and sent the RedHawks to their season-high 11th straight defeat.

Dave Krynzel belted his second leadoff homer of the season to put the Sounds on the board in the top of the first inning. The longball, Krynzel?s seventh of the year, was a solo shot to right off Oklahoma starter R.A. Dickey that extended the center fielder?s hitting streak to six games.

The Sounds mounted a two-out rally in the second to up the lead to 4-0. With two down, Tony Zuniga, who finished 3-for-4 on the evening, extended his hitting streak to six games with a single to left and Chris Barnwell followed by drawing a walk. Shortstop Steve Scarborough made it a 2-0 game when he plated Zuniga with an RBI single to left. Krynzel followed with his second big hit of the night, a two-run double off Dickey to left to bring in Barnwell and Scarborough.

Nashville made it 5-0 in the top of the seventh when Scarborough scored Zuniga with an RBI double to center.

Oklahoma broke up Sounds starter Ben Hendrickson?s shutout bid in the bottom of the frame. Adrian Gonzalez reached on a one-out single to left, moved to third on a double by Manny Alexander, and scored on Rashad Eldridge?s RBI single to put the RedHawks on the board and make it a 5-1 contest.

Outfielder Corey Hart ripped his team-leading 21st double of the year with two out in the top of the eighth to chase Dickey and extend his personal hitting streak to five games. Brad Nelson drew a walk from reliever Erasmo Ramirez to put two on for catcher Mike Rivera, who belted a three-run homer to deep left to extend the Nashville lead to 8-1. The blast was the backstop?s fourth of the season.

Hendrickson (4-6) hurled his fifth quality start to earn the victory. The right-hander held Oklahoma to one run on seven hits over seven innings of work. Dickey (0-3) remained winless on the year and fell to 3-8 lifetime against the Sounds, absorbing the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) over his 7 2/3 frames.

Jeff Bennett and Jose Capellan each tossed a scoreless frame of relief to close out the win for the Sounds. Capellan has yet to allow a run in relief this season, hurling eight scoreless frames.

The teams engage in game two of the series at 7:05 p.m. CT on Sunday evening. Left-hander Jeff Housman (3-6, 5.16) toes the rubber for Nashville to face RedHawks right-hander John Hudgins (2-4, 4.64).

Just underway: Great Falls (White Sox) at Helena

Two-hour rain delay prior to the H-Crew's home opener, this would be an ideal opportunity for late-night audio, but that's not the case. Unlike West Virginia, which made the financial plunge to web audio a couple of weeks ago, we don't believe that's in Helena's future, although they do broadcast thier games locally...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Mitch Stetter worked three solid innings in relief and chipped in with a key two-run single in Huntsville?s 6-2 win over Jacksonville Saturday night in the first of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 4-1 in the second half of the season and maintained their share of the lead in the North Division, while the Suns dropped to 2-3 in the half. The Stars won a fourth straight game for a first time since April 28 through May 1 and won for a third time in seven tries against the Suns.

Vinny Rottino?s sacrifice fly tied the game at one in the home first inning and Enrique Cruz blasted a leadoff long ball in the second to give the Stars a 2-1 lead. It was Cruz?s ninth of the season and the Stars fifth in the last two games.

David Bradley worked four innings in his second start of the season for Huntsville, giving up an unearned run on four hits and a walk. The right-hander struck out four and has allowed just two runs in 10 2/3 frames against Jacksonville in two relief outings and a start.

Stetter took over and worked scoreless relief in the fifth and sixth and came through with the biggest hit of the game in the home sixth against Richard Bartlett. The left-handed hitter fouled off five 3-2 pitches before singling past first baseman James Loney to drive in Nelson Cruz and Nelson Castro to push the Stars lead to 4-1. Tony Gwynn, Jr. followed with a triple to plate John Vanden Berg and Stetter to make it 6-1 and give him multiple RBI's in three of the last five games.

Stetter walked Andy LaRoche with two outs to force in a run in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-2 but retired Loney on a ground ball to end the inning and earn his first win of the season. Khalid Ballouli tossed two scoreless frames in his eighth relief appearance.

The series continues Sunday with left-hander Ryan Costello starting for the Stars against Suns right-hander Eric Hull. Coverage of the game gets underway at 5:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

grant richardson not embarasing himself in A ball...sollman indeed heating up as well, but where the heck are the walks from he and festa??? those guys were freakin' machines last year

Another example of why we shouldn't get excited about college guys in rookie ball. It's hard to call Sollmann at .250 as "heating up" two months into the season.

Rasheed strikes out a lot. He's like the CF, stolen base version of Brian Opdyke, with a little quicker bat. I have a hard time seeing him as anything.

What a weird comparison, where did that one come from? Even if you admit to comparing absolute apples to oranges, Rasheed at least has had some success as a pro, and has progressed since his frosh year at Lake City CC. Opdyke has done nothing.

But they are both such extreme walk/stike out guys that it is hard not to notice the comparison. Rasheed has struck out at about a 1/3+ clip , as has Opdyke. Rasheed makes better contact, and is the better defender, but neither will make it if they don't improve.

i believe my heating up comment for sollmen was more my distraction from real life...i meant to say he was turning things around, but got caught up and repeated myself...

Hasan has k'ed lots but he's showing a competant bat, and a good walk rate...k's come and go with some guys...he could be a better player than Kennard bibbs, which means we will see him all the way through AA at least...

i'm gonna get to see the power play about 5 times in august, so maybe i can offer some insight into "what the heck" with these guys

Brewer Fanatic Staff

any news on Arizona?

Yup, we know every little detail, but we're not telling http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I love when we get comments such as "any news on the (Jemile) Weeks negotiations?"

Again, any information Brewerfan "staff" becomes aware of, is 99.9% of the time posted by one of us within a matter of minutes.

So believe us, we're not holding back -- except in those rarest occasions, for which any info I reveal will earn me double-secret Brewerfan probation...
