Just for fun:

Nicknames rule the minors

Scott Brown, Florida Today

A quick quiz.

The best thing about minor-league baseball is:

a: You can take your family to a game and spend significantly less than a mortgage payment.

b: Fans often push themselves as hard as the players (you spend 23 hours a day in a used Geo Metro or a night shoveling sardines into your mouth after eating hot dogs, cheeseburgers and ice cream sandwiches as part of a promotion).

c: Kids leave a game with autographs, a foul ball or both.

d. Intimidators, Biscuits, Lugnuts, Muckdogs and Sand Gnats.

The answer, by a nose, is "d" and those seemingly disparate objects do have one thing in common: They are nicknames for minor-league baseball teams.

Monikers like those, and others such as Boll Weevils, Green Jackets and Aqua Sox, aren't just a reflection of the minor leagues' wacky nature but also the bond that teams try to create with their respective communities.

A Muckdog doesn't exist any more than Santa Claus does, but the name means something to the folks who live in Batavia, a small northern New York community between Buffalo and Rochester.

Batavia has a rich agriculture heritage, and the farmers who work the thick soil are known as "muckers." As for where the dog part of the nickname comes into play, well, using a dirt-caked farmer as a mascot wouldn't exactly appeal to kids.

"We do have a very handsome mascot," said Linda Crook, who works in community relations for Batavia, "a 7-foot, dorky-looking dog."

Like Batavia, Augusta (Ga.) picked a nickname that relates to something unique to its area. Augusta is best-known for the Masters, one of the four major championships in men's golf.

The tournament winner gets a ceremonial green jacket, hence the nickname of Augusta's Class A baseball team is the Green Jackets.

"Everyone associates Augusta with The Masters," Brevard County Manatees general manager Buck Rogers said. "They piggybacked that ride and sold merchandise off it. That's the beauty of minor-league baseball. You can take a fun name that ties into your community and no one else has."

Sometimes those names are not fun for everybody.

Not long after Rogers started working for the Manatees last year, he received an email from a member of a boating association complaining about the use of Manatees as a nickname.

When Tom Dickson and Sherrie Myers bought a team in Lansing, Mich., and gave it the nickname of Lugnuts, some bristled. After all, it could be seen as a reminder of the automobile plants that had left town.

But Dickson and Myers -- they are married but have different last names -- do not mind making a stir with their nicknames.

When they bought the Double-A team in Montgomery, Ala., they announced the new moniker at a city festival on Memorial Day 2003.

How well did the name Biscuits go over?

"Seventy-thousand people went quiet," said Jim Tocco, the team's radio voice among other things. "The same people that said, 'I'm never going to put on that hat,' were all wearing Biscuits merchandise Opening Day."

In fact, the nickname and accompanying logo -- an animated biscuit with big eyes, hands and feet -- have become so popular that the organization has sold merchandise in all 50 states, Tocco said.

Last year, Tocco added, Montgomery ranked second among all minor-league teams in merchandise sales.

Money generated from the peddling of hats, shirts and other paraphernalia helps minor-league teams defray costs. Another bonus of having a unique nickname: It adds to the appeal of teams whose stewards increasingly see their task as providing more than just developmental baseball to their community.

When he worked for the Lansing Lugnuts, Tocco once polled fans as they were leaving a game. Half of them, he said, didn't even know the score.

"Minor-league baseball isn't even close to what it used to be," Tocco said. "Nowadays, we don't just necessarily cater to baseball fans."

And what better way to cater to people in the Kannapolis, N.C, area then calling their baseball team the Intimidators?

Kannapolis is the birthplace of racing legend Dale Earnhardt, whose racing style earned him the nickname "Intimidator."

Earnhardt bought a significant share of the team not long before his fatal crash at the 2001 Daytona 500, and Kannapolis' nickname fits the two most important criteria: something creative and unique to the area.

Same goes for the Iron Birds -- a Class A team owned by baseball's "Ironman" Cal Ripken Jr.

And the Blue Claws.

And the Timber Rattlers.

And on and on. . .

Stars notebook (through Friday's Games)

Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

Covering the bases

Pitcher Glenn Woolard is back with the team, having served a five-game suspension imposed by manager Don Money. Woolard briefly left the team after his last performance.

Dana Eveland goes for his ninth win this week. He is tied with Tennessee's Enrique Gonzalez at eight. The Stars record for wins in a season is 14, held by Dan Eskew (1990) and Bobby Chouinard (1995). But don't figure the pitching-poor Brewers would leave Eveland here long enough this year to threaten the record. ... The Stars' 12-run fifth inning Thursday at Mobile tied a franchise record for most runs in an inning. ... They won three consecutive road games for the first time all season. ... The Stars may be batting only .267 as a team, seventh in the league, but they have the fewest strikeouts.

The Southern League All-Star teams will be announced this week. The game is July 13 in Mobile. ... The popular ex-Star Derek Lee has signed with the Rangers' organization after beginning the year in independent ball. In his lone Triple-A appearance at Oklahoma City, he threw seven shutout innings. ... The Stars' youth camp has been postponed until July 28-30. For registration information, call 882-2562 or see www.huntsvillestars.com.

Around the league

Adam Bass, the Smokies' pitcher from Huntsville, pitched nicely Friday against Montgomery but didn't get the decision. He held Montgomery to one run over eight innings, allowing only five hits and retiring 14 of the last 15 batters he faced. ... Jacksonville's Andy LaRoche has 25 homers for the season, the most in minor league baseball, with four for the Suns and 21 at Class A Vero Beach. He is the younger brother of Atlanta first baseman Adam LaRoche and son of ex-major league pitcher Dave LaRoche. ...

Before a Thursday loss at Montgomery, Tennessee had won six straight games, 12 of 13 and nine consecutive on the road. ... Jacksonville's Jon Weber (.520, four homers) and West Tenn's Renyel Pinto (12 scoreless innings, one win) are the most recent SL Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. ... Dewon Brazelton made an appearance for Montgomery on Tuesday, then was sent back to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Thursday. Brazelton threw 46 pitches, 31 for strikes, in a three-inning start, his first appearance since May 11. He had first refused a minor league assignment, costing him some $6,000 per day in salary. ...

A rarity in the Southern League: Birmingham has a knuckleball pitcher, right-hander Charles Haeger, who made his debut Wednesday in a win at Chattanooga. He shut the Lookouts down for the first four innings before giving up four runs in the next two. ... We're only quoting here from a Jacksonville press release. The math is up to you: "Three Suns players were ejected Wednesday and six Suns players took called strike threes Thursday.''

Brewings

Triple-A Nashville Sounds (40-36, first place in Pacific Coast League American Division): OF Corey Hart .301, 6 HRs, 33 RBIs

Single-A Brevard County Manatees (1-2, third in Florida State East Division): RP Brian Wolfe four saves, 0.00 ERA in 11 appearances

Single-A West Virginia Power (1-3, seventh in South Atlantic League Northern Division in second half): INF Hernan Iribarren 27 SBs, .325

On deck

The Stars host Jacksonville this evening at 6:05 and on Monday and Tuesday at 7:05, then travel to West Tenn. Fans bringing a church bulletin will be admitted for half-price today.

Jake the Diamond Dog appears tonight, followed by the furry mascot Reggy on Monday. Tuesday is buy one, get one free on general admission tickets, hot dogs, pizza and soft drinks.

Not to sound picky, but the Brewers aren't pitching-poor at the moment. Yes, the AAA squad could use help, but Hendrickson is holding his own, Housman has been iffy, Helling very good, Glover very solid. So to me, Eveland may have a shot at the record

Braun gets a single and an RBI in his first professional at bat. Salome is 2-2 and Helena is up 6 - 1 in the fourth. I know it's early but this looks like it might be a great team out in Montana.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

No kidding, he's dealing. Although given his extreme groundout to flyball ratio, he's another groundball pitcher like Carlos Villanueva & even Pedro Liriano that has given up his fair share of home runs (7 in about 80 innings of work now).

Bad luck with Huntsville getting beat up, but what about that Nashville...

They were down 4 zip early, but no problem, just hang around, score a few runs late, and suddenly up 6-4 in the 8th.

Some guy named Hart is 2 for 3 with a double.

I really want to see Capellan in the 8th and/or 9th with a slim lead and the pressure on.

That's less than a HR every 11 innings. Hardly seems a problem.

I'm not saying it's a problem, although that many HRs in the minor league level may mean more than that many HRs at the big-league level. If anything I was referring back to some earlier conversations talking about groundball pitchers & the amount of HRs they allow. They don't always coincide.

Man, it's great to see Hart doing so well. Over .300 after starting the season so incredibly slow.

Nothing special f/ the baby Brewers today as they lost 1-7 to the Cubs. Out-hit 12 to 5. Anderson De La Rosa's rbi double looks like the only highlight on offense...pitching was bad in the late innings (Labasta & Villar), giving up 6 of the 7 runs in the final three. Matt Kretzschmar (sp?) with 2 scoreless innings...
