yayh for the regional sports channel in georgia...

i woulda gone to the game, except i'm in savannah for the night...anyway, alcides made an absolutely amazing defensive play in the 7th...the ball hit off the third basemans glove, then shot into the air...alcides grabbed the ball on it's way down, and fired it to first just in time to nail the runner...they showed the replay about 5 times..

also, hernan's double might have been a triple if the soaking wet grass hadn't slowed it to a hault

Nashville Site Game Summary:

OKLAHOMA CITY ? A pair of streaks came to a close on Tuesday evening at SBC Bricktown Ballpark. Oklahoma snapped its 13-game losing streak and ended Nashville?s three-game win streak with a 7-2 victory over the Sounds in the finale of a four-game series.

Oklahoma broke open a 2-2 game in the eighth inning, using only one hit to produce five runs against the Sounds bullpen. Andy Pratt hit RedHawks left fielder Jason Botts with a bases-loaded, 0-2 pitch with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to plate Manny Alexander with the decisive run.

RedHawks third baseman Marshall McDougall, in his first game back from the big leagues, followed with a grand slam off Pratt to extend the lead to its final 7-2. The blast, McDougall?s eighth of the season, was the third grand slam allowed by Nashville pitching this season; all three slams against the Sounds have come off Oklahoma bats.

With the loss and a win by division rival Memphis, Nashville (43-37) wraps up the road trip 2 ½ games in first place in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Despite failing to complete a sweep of the RedHawks, the Sounds completed their road trip with a 5-3 record.

Oklahoma took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning on consecutive two-out RBI singles by Chad Allen and Adrian Gonzalez.

Nashville left fielder Ryan Knox, celebrating his 28th birthday, put the Sounds on the board with a two-out RBI double to deep left in the top of the third, bringing home Dave Krynzel.

Chris Barnwell evened the contest at 2-2 in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly, scoring Brad Nelson.

Sounds third baseman Tony Zuniga went 0-for-3 and was held hitless for the first time in a Sounds uniform, snapping his eight-game hitting streak.

Outfielder Corey Hart extended his hit streak to eight games with a ninth-inning single.

RedHawks reliever Michael Tejera (2-1) earned the victory with two scoreless innings of relief work. Kane Davis (4-2) was saddled with the loss after allowing two runs and fanning four over his 1 2/3 frames of work.

Both starting pitchers turned in solid outings but each left with a no-decision. Sounds starter Justin Lehr posted his fourth consecutive quality start, allowing two runs (one earned) while striking out seven batters and walking none over six innings of work. Oklahoma?s Ryan Snare held Nashville to two runs on four hits over seven frames.

The Sounds join the entire Pacific Coast League for an off day Wednesday before opening a four-game homestand against the cross-state rival Memphis Redbirds on Thursday evening at Greer Stadium. It will be the first of 16 games between the PCL American Conference Northern Division rivals this season.

Nashville right-hander Gary Glover (1-0, 0.50) will start Thursday?s 7:00 p.m. CT series opener and face veteran Memphis southpaw Bill Pulsipher (2-2, 4.03).

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Red-Hot Suns Sink Stars

Joel Guzman collected four hits, including a home run, scored four times and knocked in four runs to pace an 18-hit attack in Jacksonville?s 13-8 win over Huntsville Tuesday night in the final game of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars slipped to 5-3 in the second half of the season and maintained their hold on first place in the North Division after Carolina and Birmingham were rained out, while the Suns improved to 4-4 in the second half. The Stars and Suns concluded their season series with Jacksonville taking six of the 10 games.

The Suns jumped on Stars starter Dennis Sarfate for a run in the first, two in the second, one in the third and knocked him out after tallying four times in the fourth to open up an 8-3 advantage. Sarfate was charged with a season-high eight runs, seven earned, on a season-high eight hits and a season-high five walks. The right-hander fanned a season-low one batter in his shortest outing of the year.

Keith Stamler allowed a run on five hits in 2 2/3 innings in his first appearance with the Stars and Guzman belted a two-out, two-run home run in the seventh off of Mitch Stetter, who had been named to the North Division All-Star team earlier in the day. Guzman singled twice, doubled and walked and wound up going 13-for-18 with nine runs batted in over the four-game series. The Suns, the league leaders in runs scored, hits, home runs and team batting average, totaled 32 runs on 58 hits in the series and had at least 11 hits in all four games.

Justin Orenduff recorded the win after allowing three runs on six hits in five innings in his second double-A start. The right-hander struck out 10 and walked only one and combined with Carlos Alvarez to record 15 strikeouts, the most Huntsville hitters have fanned in a game this season.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. knocked in a season-high three runs for the Stars, including two on a single that tied the game at three in the second inning, and has driven in a run in five of his last six games and seven out of his last nine. Brandon Gemoll hit a two-run home run in the ninth for his fifth of the season, second in as many nights and third in the last five games. Vinny Rottino picked up a pair of hits in four at-bats and has six multiple hit games in the eight games played in the second half of the season.

The Stars are back in action Thursday when they open a four-game set against West Tenn with left-hander Manny Parra on the hill. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Cruz is gone, and so is Stars' win streak

Standout heads to Triple-A Nashville after Suns' 13-8 win

By MARK McCARTER

Times Sports Staff markcolumn@aol.com

A little after six o'clock, Stars outfielder Nelson Cruz launched back-to-back batting practice pitches on the sort of awesome parabola seen only in Hollywood home runs.

"That,'' said reliever Matt DeWitt, "is a man.''

One caromed off a sign attached to a light pole, 45 feet high, 365 feet distant from home plate.

Goodbye, baseball.

And, by evening's end, goodbye Cruz.

And, by evening's end, goodbye to a tidy little Stars' streak of five wins in six games.

The Jacksonville Suns pounded Huntsville 13-8 in front of an announced crowd of 1,637. After which, in a somber clubhouse, manager Don Money called Cruz in to inform him he was being promoted to Triple-A Nashville today.

Cruz was second in the league in homers with 16 and fifth in RBIs at 54. Ironically, his final game was miserable - four strikeouts and a groundout. According to Nashville sources, no announcement has been made there about who might be sent down to make room for Cruz.

It wasn't merely a tidy little streak that went goodbye. It was tidiness as a whole.

Tuesday's game took 3:17 to play, had 15 Huntsville strikeouts, five wild pitches, a balk, 18 Jacksonville hits (its seventh consecutive double-digit hitting game) and various other pratfalls. Today's off day, before the Stars resume with a four-game set at West Tenn on Thursday, will be much welcome.

Well, maybe not for Jacksonville's Joel Guzman, one of the most highly regarded prospects in baseball. He homered into Cruz-land in the top of the seventh - deep to left - to give him 13 hits in 18 at-bats for this four-game series, driving in nine runs and scoring six.

Goodbye, and good riddance as far as the Stars are concerned, to Mr. Guzman.

It was an uncharacteristic poor evening for Huntsville starter Dennis Sarfate, who had won his last three starts. He never seemed comfortable, like a man pitching in too-tight underwear, and allowed eight hits, seven earned runs and five walks in 3 1/3 innings.

Sarfate hit leadoff batter Jon Weber, with an 0-2 count no less, then walked Russell Martin and committed a balk. It went downhill from there.

Though he spotted the Suns a 3-zip lead, the Stars made a temporary comeback in the second when Brandon Gemoll and Nelson Castro led off with singles, and Ben Van Iderstine drove home Gemoll. Callix Crabbe singled to load the bases, then Tony Gwynn Jr. singled in two runs. Gwynn would later drive in a run in the eighth, giving him 28 RBIs for the season, only nine shy of his 2004 total.

A Stars error in the fourth let the Suns go ahead 4-3, then Jacksonville pounded out four runs in the fifth, with Sarfate being yanked after a one-out walk loaded the bases.

By the time the Stars answered back with another run, on Jacksonville throwing error after a Crabbe single in the sixth, all it did was tick the Suns off. Guzman slammed his two-run in the top of the seventh.

Brandon Gemoll mashed a two-run homer in the ninth.

Eveland, Stetter are North All-Stars

Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

Huntsville's starting pitcher Dana Eveland and reliever Mitch Stetter were named Tuesday to the North squad for the upcoming Southern League All-Star Game.

The game is July 13 in Mobile, and pits members of the SL North - Huntsville, Carolina, Tennessee, Chattanooga and West Tenn - against the South (Birmingham, Jacksonville, Mississippi, Mobile and Montgomery), whose team will be announced today.

"Both are deserving choices,'' said Stars manager Don Money. "Eveland is in the top five or six in ERA and Stetter has six saves and has pitched well.''

Eveland is 8-4 with a 2.94 ERA in 16 starts.

Stetter is 1-3, but has the six saves and a 2.20 ERA, all in relief.

He has been scored on in only seven of his 28 appearances.

In Money's mind, there was one glaring omission. Stars outfielder Nelson Cruz, who went into Tuesday's action second in the league in homers and fifth in RBIs, to go along with a .313 average.

"When you look at his numbers compared to the other outfielders, he should be there,'' Money said.

However, by the end of Tuesday's game, that became a moot point.

Cruz, who will participate in the prestigious Futures Game, was informed by Money he was being promoted to Triple-A Nashville today.

Charleston Gazette:

AUGUSTA, Ga. ? The South beat the North 7-5 in the 46th annual South Atlantic League All-Star game Tuesday night.

Playing for the North, the West Virginia Power?s Hernan Iribarren had a one-out double in the top of the ninth, bringing teammate Alcides Escobar to the plate with a chance to tie the game. Iribarren was then thrown out attempting to steal third, and Escobar struck out on a full count for the final out.

Iribarren played second base and was 1-for-2, while Escobar finished at shortstop, going 0-for-2.

The Power?s Robert Hinton pitched two-thirds of an inning for the North, surrendering no hits and no runs. Former West Virginia University standout Grant Psomas, who started for the North at third base, was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

A four-run third inning broke a 1-all tie and propelled the South to the win. Andrew Pinckney drove in Tim Battle on a single to right field to start the scoring off of Lake County pitcher Aaron Laffey, who took the loss.

Battle led the South offensively, going 2-for-3. Augusta?s Brian Horwitz drove in two runs in front of the home crowd.

Hagerstown?s Dante Brinkley hit a solo homer in the top of the fifth for the North.

Asheville?s Matt Dailey pitched the third inning, surrendering a run but picking up the win for the South. Augusta pitcher Brian Wilson picked up the save.

The All-Star break continues today before South Atlantic League play resumes Thursday. The Power has a four-game series at Delmarva Thursday through Sunday, then returns to Appalachian Power Park to begin a three-game series Monday against Lexington.

Can we guess? If Nelson Cruz is at AAA...

Nelson is going back to AA.

Hart is going up to MLB.

Prince is staying at MLB (Nelson the new first baseman)

Knox is going back to AA - or being released.

We really only need 5 guys for the outfield/dh/1st base.

Nelson, Krynzel, Hart, Cruz, Fielder, Knox = six

----------------

Also, when oh when is Villanueva going up. It is not possible to have a negative era, so what are they waiting for.

---------------

And I bet Sarfate was just grumpy. He has done all that was asked of him. And he can see older guys doing bad at AAA, yet he is not promoted.

And I bet Sarfate was just grumpy

I don't know about that, but he was given absolutely no assistance, by one of the most apathetically awful displays of defense. the sheer ineptitude of which simply doesn't show on the error count.

Good defenders get him out of the second and probably the third inning before they score on him.

H-fan you are needing some reprogramming, my friend. Get with the program. Defense is overrated and does not have much of an impact on the results of the game of baseball.
