June Transactions: Latest -- Updates on All the 'Missing'

Brewer Fanatic Staff

As first mentioned on the Major League Forum via the Sounds' website:

To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Trent Durrington, Milwaukee released minor league pitcher Sam Narron, who had not appeared at any level this season.

The 6'7" Narron will be 24 next month. He had been claimed on waivers from Texas late last season.

LHP Sam Narron career statistics:

From Adam McCalvy's MLB.com Notes:

To make room for Durrington on the 40-man roster, the Brewers removed left-hander Sam Narron, who had Tommy John surgery earlier this season and is out for the year. According to assistant general manager Gord Ash, the official move goes like this:

Narron was designated for assignment Saturday, will be placed on release waivers Monday and will clear on Wednesday. At that time, the Brewers will re-sign him to a Minor League deal.

From the Grass Isn't Always Greener Category:

Drew Olson in the Journal-Sentinel:

Jeff Cirillo's injury occurred a week after Nashville third baseman Kevin Orie exercised an "out" clause in his contract. Orie subsequently signed with Washington and is now playing for the Nationals' top affiliate.

"It always happens that way," Gord Ash said.

I think the Brewers would still have called up Trent Durrington (for speed) over Orie, however.

By the way, reliever Chad Paronto ended up signing with the Braves' organization and has been hit hard in two relief appearances thus far at AAA Richmond.

From Mark McCarter of the Huntsville Times:

The Stars have added a new pitcher, Keith Stamler, who will join the team today. He's a 25-year-old right-hander from New Jersey who played collegiately at St. John's. He was signed as a free agent, after going 3-1 with a 7.32 ERA for Oklahoma, the Rangers' Triple-A farm team then making six appearances for Oakland's Sacramento Triple-A team. ... Stamler replaces Matt DeWitt, who went on the disabled list with a sore elbow.

The Brewers have dipped into the post-draft undrafted free agent pool and signed OF Winston Pearson out of Jacksonville (Alabama) State University, and assigned the 5'11", 190 lb. Pearson to Arizona. He'll be 23 years old in July.

Winston Pearson JSU Player Profile:

Pearson slugged well in 2005 -- his two-season numbers are included here:

The Brewers have also added another player to the Arizona roster, apparently a Latin signee, LHP Julio Guzman, a 6'1", 170 lb. 17-year-old.

Of the 21 active pitchers on the Arizona roster, only three are left-handed -- newcomer Guzman, 2005 10th round pick Steve Garrison, and 2004 8th round pick Brandon Parillo.

Cruz is gone, and so is Stars' win streak

Standout heads to Triple-A Nashville after Suns' 13-8 win

By MARK McCARTER

Times Sports Staff markcolumn@aol.com

A little after six o'clock, Stars outfielder Nelson Cruz launched back-to-back batting practice pitches on the sort of awesome parabola seen only in Hollywood home runs.

"That,'' said reliever Matt DeWitt, "is a man.''

One caromed off a sign attached to a light pole, 45 feet high, 365 feet distant from home plate.

Goodbye, baseball.

And, by evening's end, goodbye Cruz.

And, by evening's end, goodbye to a tidy little Stars' streak of five wins in six games.

The Jacksonville Suns pounded Huntsville 13-8 in front of an announced crowd of 1,637. After which, in a somber clubhouse, manager Don Money called Cruz in to inform him he was being promoted to Triple-A Nashville today.

Cruz was second in the league in homers with 16 and fifth in RBIs at 54. Ironically, his final game was miserable - four strikeouts and a groundout. According to Nashville sources, no announcement has been made there about who might be sent down to make room for Cruz.

They don't have to send anyone down, they were 2 under the roster limit.

Are we going to move someone back to first base, meaning that Prince will stay up longer in Milwaukee than we have been led to believe. Has Brad Nelson fallen out of favor? Are we going to call an outfielder up to Milwaukee? Did one of our outfielders get hurt and I missed it?

This is my idea of what will happen; when Branyan is ready to come back we will call him and Hart up and move Durrington and Fielder back down. The only reason we have Durrington up is because of the lack of infield depth, but that is solved w/Branyan back.

I think Durrington is up for middle infield depth. Branyan doesn't solve that. Cirillo could play 2B, or SS in an extreme pinch. Russell, I think it's safe to assume, cannot play anything but 3B, 1B or possibly LF or RF. And no clancy, Russell can't catch. Because Durrington can play 3B, SS and 2B, he is now Billy Hall (albeit a more Australianized version of him), while Billy Hall is now Jeff Cirillo. When Branyan comes back, he immediately becomes simply Russell Branyan, with less playing time than before. Durrington has to stay, for better or worse, until either Cirillo comes back or another middle infielder is produced.

You're right Ralph; Durrington is up for middle infield help and Branyan will not be playing short or second... but when Branyan comes back don't you think that will free up Bill Hall to move from 3rd if needed to play SS or 2nd? We'll have 2 3rd basemen (Wes and Muscle) JJ at short, Rickie at 2nd and Bill who can cover any one of the 3.

I'm not saying Branyan will play the same role as Durrington, but Branyan will play the same role as Hall who will go to playing the same role he did before Russell was hurt.

I'm hoping we'll now swap Hart for Durrington and let Hart spell Jenkins against LHPs. For some reason, Melvin seems to really want some speed on the bench right now, but Durrington's probably not much faster than Hart anyway. And with five infielders for three positions, there's no reason to keep Trent on the roster. When Branyan comes back, send Prince back down to play every day.

I think that when Branyan comes back, Fielder goes down. I also think that Durrington is here to stay. However, he should only be used in emergencies. If someone else comes up, I think that Hardy goes down. The Brewers are doing him a disservice. I think that we have trades left in us, but they are of the minor variety, unless we have another long losing streak.

I was really hoping to see Cruz in Huntsville. I don't really fell like driving the extra couple of hours to Nashville. As for Nelson, I've said for a couple of years that I don't see what makes him a hot prospect. He looked totally lost in the games I saw at Huntsville. He had no business getting promoted to AAA.

19-year-old switch-hitting infielder Oscar Emeterio, a Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native in his first year of pro ball, was a surprise name on the Helena roster to open the season. He was 0-for-2 with one RBI in one game for the H-Crew, but has now been transferred to Arizona.

In other news, earlier this month the Brewers released 20-year-old RHP Oscar Montes. Drafted in the 18th round in 2003 out of a Florida high school, Montes signed at the end of that summer, but not in time to appear in any games. Making his pro debut with Arizona in 2004, he appeared in 13 games (seven starts), and allowed 39 hits and 26 walks in 42.2 IP, striking out a fairly impressive 50. No idea if there's more to the story behind his release, if so, we're unlikely to ever know...

Updates from Brevard County:

RHP Landon Stockman is back on the 7-day disabled list, where he opened the season. No word on the specifics of his latest injury. He has a 3.50 ERA in 13 relief appearances this season.

RHP Darwin Soto is serving his 15-day suspension for performance-enhancing drugs; he tested positive around the time of his release from the Mariners' system early on this spring, and won't make his Brewer organization debut until after his time is served.

These definitions may be helpful to you as we discuss below. The following "missing" players are those currently not on an active roster. Until today, I wasn't aware that there's also a 60-day DL in the minor leagues; their standard DL is seven days. Keep in mind we might stumble upon injury info occasionally, but otherwise the Brewers do not release specific injury details.

Restricted List

A player who fails to report or fails to sign a contract with the Club to which the player is reserved may be placed on the Restricted List. There is no minimum number of days the player must remain on the Restricted List before the player can be reinstated to the Active List. A player on the Restricted List does not count against a Club's Active List limits or its Reserve List limits.

Voluntary Retired

A player who wishes to retire is placed on this list. The player may not be reinstated until the player has missed 60 playing days of the championship season.

Nashville DL:

RHP John Novinsky

LHP Sam Narron

Huntsville DL:

RHP Jerome Gamble

RHP Ryan Miller

RHP Alec Zumwalt

RHP Matt DeWitt

Huntsville 60-day DL:

RHP Jesse Harper

C Kade Johnson

RHP Mike Jones

RHP Chris Saenz

Brevard County DL:

RHP Josh Alliston

RHP Landon Stockman

Brevard County 60-day DL:

LHP Eric Henderson

Brevard County Suspended List:

RHP Darwin Soto

West Virginia DL:

RHP Alvaro Martinez

West Virginia Restricted List:

OF Terry Trofholz

Helena 60-day DL:

RHP Tommy Hawk

LHP Carlos Ramirez

LHP Edwin Walker

Helena Restricted List:

OF Ryan Gordon

LHP Jared Theodorakos

Helena Voluntarily Retired List:

RHP Tom Wilhelmsen

Arizona Restricted List:

RHP Victor Arias

RHP Dany Mosquea

OF Joel Rivera

Assigned to the Venezuelan Summer League:

LHP Luis Ramirez

LHP Jose Romero

While Joel Rivera's (15th round, 2003) absence from Arizona is odd and disappointing, the news here is that Tom Wilhelmsen's (2002 7th round pick) odyssey seems to have taken another turn away from the Brewers. While the transaction description above indicates there's a chance he'll return, it seems as though Tom's baseball career is on indefinite hold, if not over. Too bad.

do we know the injuries and timeframes for the DL guys? Perhaps a new thread pinned at the top of the forum could serve as the "Current Minor League Rosters Thread" or "Minor League DL thread", updated only by administrators like the draft signings forum

I'll try and incorporate that kind of thing into the main site.

Repeated from above -- while yeah, we know guys like Tommy Hawk, Chris Saenz, Jesse Harper all are Tommy John guys and we have some info on the others, I don't think yet another pinned thread is necessary.

"Current Minor League Rosters Thread"

We have that -- it's called the Player Index, and it's completely sortable by just about any category, including of course, by team.
