Brevard County Site Game Summary:

PALMISANO, DEEVERS KEEP MANATEES AFLOAT

VIERA, FL ? Big hits and solid pitching were all the Manatees have needed all year. On Wednesday night they were able to put all that together as they took game one of the series with the St Lucie Mets 4-3 at Space Coast Stadium.

Robby Deevers got it all started for Brevard in the bottom of the fifth. After the Manatees fell behind on a two-run Mets' shot in the top of the fourth, Deevers connected on a two-run triple scoring Ben Diggins and Steve Sollmann to tie the game at two. Diggins and Sollman where on after mistakes by the Mets pitcher and first round draft pick Philip Humber, hitting Diggins and walking Sollmann. While Sollmann was batting Diggins would steal second to pick up his first stolen base of his career.

In the top of the seventh the Mets would go ahead 3-2 before Jeff Eure would even things up for BC. Eure hit his 14th home run of the season, a solo shot to left center field, to tie the game back up.

Extra innings seemed inevitable for the Manatees who have already played 15 games with free baseball. But a tenth inning would not be necessary tonight. Adam Heether led of the bottom of the ninth with a single to right field and would then steal second. With Lou Palmisano batting Mets pitcher Henry Owens would throw a wild pitch to move Heether to third with no outs. Palmisano would line a screaming shot to right center on a full count to bring home Heether and put the Manatees in the win column for the fifth time in the second half and are now 5-3, tied with St Lucie for second place.

The Manatees and the Mets take the field again tomorrow with another 7:00 contest (6:00 Central) at Space Coast Stadium. Ty Taubenheim and his 9-2 record takes the mound for the Manatees as he looks to lower his 2.81 ERA.

In progress: Billings (Reds) 5, Helena 4, bottom of the 8th in Billings

Just a brutally sloppy game, however with several key double plays turned by each club -- I'm sure a few of you are listening, that last DP turned by the Mustangs in the 8th with runners on 1st and 3rd, one out, was an absolute killer...

Final: Billings (Reds) 6, Helena 4

First taste of defeat -- hardly a clean effort tonight...

Helena Box Score:

Derek Miller was relieved by Eric Thomas in the middle of the 4th, the same inning SS Michael Bell committed all three of his errors; RF Steve Chapman wasn't charged with an error, but fell down in the 3rd to turn a single into a run-scoring triple; Angel Salome hitless (walked twice), but had a costly passed ball -- you got the sense from the broadcast he has some work to do. A northeast area scout with another organization told me Salome "just couldn't catch" at the time he was drafted last spring -- it's so early, so keep the faith...

Mustangs win 6th straight; hand Helena 1st loss of year

By BILL BIGHAUS

Of The Billings Gazette Staff

Helena came into Cobb Field Wednesday night as the hottest team in the Pioneer League, but Billings is now a little hotter.

The Mustangs, in posting their sixth straight victory, rallied from a 3-0 deficit, taking advantage of three Helena errors and scoring five unearned runs en route to winning 6-4 against the previously unbeaten Brewers.

Billings, 7-1, is off to its best start since the 2001 Mustangs started 8-1. Helena dropped to 7-1.

"So far pitching and defense have definitely been our strengths," Jamie Langham, Billings' designated hitter, said of the Mustangs' sizzling start. "We've been swinging the bats pretty well, too. We've been getting some clutch hits, but for the most part it has been our defense and our pitching that has been carrying us."

The Mustangs had four errors on Wednesday night, but some clutch pitching in relief by Aaron Garrison and Jose Rojas helped Billings overcome its blunders.

Garrison and Rojas scattered three hits in four shutout innings and struck out five.

With the Mustangs leading 5-4 in the top of the eighth, Rojas also chipped in a defensive gem after entering the game with one out and Helena runners situated at first and third. The Brewers' Charlie Fermaint, however, promptly hit a ground ball back to Rojas and the right-hander started a clutch 1-6-3 double play.

Billings added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth after Jose Ronda singled to center, was sacrificed to second by Chris Denove and went to third on a passed ball. After fouling off an attempted squeeze bunt, No. 9 hitter Kenny Lewis lofted a sacrifice fly to shallow left field and Ronda beat the throw as he slid across home plate.

Rojas, after walking the first batter he faced in the ninth, retired the next three Helena hitters for his third save of the young season.

"We were out-hit and we made more errors than they did, but we did make a couple of big plays towards the end that we needed to make defensively and we put a lot of pressure on their defense by just running out balls hard and playing the game the way you're supposed to," said Mustangs' manager Rick Burleson. "It might have been one of those games that we didn't necessarily win -- they might have lost.

"But our guys did not quit down 3-0. They battled, battled, battled and the next thing you know we got the lead and our bullpen held it. That was nice to see, for sure."

Garrison, the third of four Billings pitchers on the night, collected his first win of the season. He pitched the sixth and seventh innings before giving way to Rojas in the eighth.

"The guys threw strikes," Langham observed. "Rojas got us out of a big jam and we had a couple of timely hits. That was basically it."

Langham was responsible for two of Billings' six hits - including a run-scoring double in the fourth inning.

Helena entered the game with a team batting average of .356. The Brewers whacked 11 hits against Billings, but also stranded 11 runners.

"We knew they had some guys that can swing the bat and that they would probably score some runs," Langham said. "Fortunately we just kept them from scoring. They had a lot of base runners, but somehow we stranded them.

"This is a big series and we like playing good teams."

Helena poked three doubles, while three of Billings' six hits were bunt singles. The Mustangs also had a couple of sacrifice bunts and a sacrifice fly.

"We're not really a power team, so a lot of times we have to manufacture runs," noted Langham.

The Mustangs trailed 3-0 after 2 1/2 innings, but went ahead for keeps 5-3 by scoring four runs on one hit and three Helena errors in the bottom of the fourth.

After Eric Eymann tripled in a run in the third inning for Billings to make it a 3-1 contest, Jordan Belcher started the fourth inning for the Mustangs by reaching base on an error by Helena shortstop Michael Bell.

Belcher moved to second on a passed ball and then came home on Langham's double to the left-field wall to whittle the gap to 3-2.

Helena brought in 6-foot-9 Eric Thomas to relieve starter Derek Miller, and he walked Ronda and hit Denove to load the bases.

Lewis struck out, but Brandon Roberts brought Langham racing home with the tying run by hitting into a fielder's choice. After second baseman Agustin Septimo flipped the ball to shortstop Bell to force out Denove at second on Roberts' grounder, Bell's attempt to double Roberts off at first resulted in a wild throw.

Ronda scooted home on the throwing error to put Billings ahead 4-3.

Belcher then stole second and later scored to make it 5-3 when Bell fielded Eymann's grounder, but unleashed another wild throw to first base.

Helena closed to within 5-4 on a run-scoring single by Matt Gamel in the fifth.

In looking to go 8-0 on the season, the Brewers went ahead 1-0 in the second inning on back-to-back doubles by Gamel and Bell. In the third, Helena's Fermaint scored on a passed ball and teammate Ryan Braun made it 3-0 when he stole third and motored home when Mustang third baseman Ronda couldn't handle catcher Denove's throw.

But the Mustangs would rally and are now tied with the Brewers for first place in the Pioneer's Northern Division.

"Seven and one is a good start, but we expect to win," said Langham. "We know we have a good team and we go into every game expecting to win."

The Mustangs and Brewers will continue their three-game series tonight with a 7:05 start (8:05 Central) at Cobb Field.

Billings catcher Chris Denove is hit by Helena?s Stephen Chapman, 70, after catching a force out at home Wednesday night at Cobb Field.

Wow, an Arizona box score! The baby Brewers get their first win (that we know of), winning 13-12 in 10 innings.

www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&did=milb&t=g_box&gid=2005_06_29_brrrok_rngrok_1

EDIT: I noticed that stats include all 6 games now. The pitching stats show a 1-5 record. So I guess this was the first win.

Kudos to Bernie Dennis, who caught the entire game.

Is Anderson Delarosa the first Brewer to reach in all six plate appearances this year?
