Nashville Pre-Game Audio (from Friday) with Nelson Cruz:

Final: Memphis (Cardinals) 6, Nashville 1

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Wainwright, Redbirds Steamroll Sounds, 6-1

NASHVILLE ? Memphis right-hander Adam Wainwright turned in the best outing against Nashville all season on Saturday evening at Greer Stadium, leading the Redbirds to a 6-1 victory over the first-place Sounds in the third game of a four-game series.

The 23-year-old Wainwright (6-6) allowed only one run on five hits over a season-high eight innings and struck out six Nashville batters in picking up his first victory in five starts.

The Memphis win reduced the Sounds? lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to 3 ½ games over the Redbirds.

Sounds All-Star outfielder Corey Hart extended his hitting streak to 11 games, matching his season high, with his team-leading 26th double during a 1-for-4 evening.

Redbirds second baseman Bo Hart put the visitors up 1-0 with a two-out RBI double off Nashville starter Jeff Housman in the top of the second inning. Housman retired the first two batters in the frame then allowed a Mike Mahoney double before issuing a walk to Memphis starting pitcher Wainwright to set the table for Hart.

Russell Branyan tied the game in the bottom of the second with a mammoth home run to right-center off Wainwright. The blast, which was Branyan?s first of his rehab assignment with the Sounds, landed on Chestnut Street on the fly.

Audio link of Branyan's Titanic Moon Shot:

www.nashvillesounds.com/a...%207-2.mp3

Branyan played his first complete game with the Sounds in the fifth contest of his rehab assignment. He played six innings in right field then moved to third base, where he had no fielding chances for the duration of the evening.

Memphis regained the lead with home runs on back-to-back pitches from Housman in the top of the third. Shortstop John Nelson belted a two-run shot to left, his 11th of the season, to score Scott Seabol, who had walked. Brandon Berger followed with a first-pitch tater to left, his 13th roundtripper.

The Redbirds increased the advantage to 6-1 with two third-inning runs against Sounds reliever Clint Weibl. Seabol ripped an RBI double into the left field corner to bring home Hart and Nelson drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly.

Nashville's best scoring chance the rest of the way came in the fifth, when the Sounds loaded the bases against Wainwright with only one out. However, Dave Krynzel struck out looking (prompting his ejection from the contest) and Warren Morris grounded out to end the threat.

Housman (3-7) was tagged with the loss after surrendering four runs on five hits in three innings of work. He walked four and struck out four.

The teams wrap up the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Rick Helling (5-3, 4.17) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Memphis right-hander and Franklin, Tenn. resident Kevin Jarvis (6-2, 2.76).

Nashville Box Score:

Let's be honest -- Jeff Housman's command (and his performance) has been awful in 2005;

Final: West Tenn (Cubs) 11, Huntsville 0

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Jae-Kuk Ryu tossed 7 2/3 scoreless innings and Casey McGehee and Matt Murton each collected four hits to pace a 16-hit attack in West Tenn?s 11-0 decision over Huntsville Saturday night in the third game of a four-game set at Pringles Park. The Diamond Jaxx handed the Stars their worst defeat of the season and improved to 6-5 to move into a first place tie with Huntsville in the North Division, pending the outcome of the doubleheader between Carolina and Jacksonville.

Adam Greenberg?s two-run home run in the first inning started the scoring for the home team, which added single tallies in the second and third innings to open up a 4-0 lead. The Diamond Jaxx broke the game open with four in the fourth on a two-run single by McGehee, a run-scoring double by Ryan Theriot and a throwing error by Brad Nelson in left field that allowed Theriot to circle the bases.

Stars? starter Ryan Costello was charged with eight runs, seven earned, for a second straight start and suffered the loss to fall to 0-5. The southpaw has allowed 21 runs, 19 earned, on 24 hits over 8 1/3 innings of work in his last three starts. Keith Stamler allowed run-scoring hits by McGehee and Ryan Theriot in the sixth inning and Murton?s solo home run, his seventh of the season and second against the Stars, off of Brett Evert closed out the scoring in the eighth.

Ryu allowed five singles and only two runners to reach second base in picking up his seventh win of the season and first in three starts against the Stars. The right-hander walked three and fanned five in his longest outing of the season. Andy Shipman tossed a scoreless inning and a third to finish off the shutout and ended the game by inducing Brandon Gemoll to ground into a double play, the fourth of the night turned by the Jaxx.

Vinny Rottino went hitless in four at-bats and lost a five-game hitting streak, while Gemoll also went hitless in four tries and lost a four-game hitting streak and runs batted in string. Nelson singled twice and walked twice and has reached base in 13 out of 14 plate appearances in the series.

The series concludes Sunday evening with left-hander Dana Eveland taking the hill for the Stars against Diamond Jaxx left-hander Sean Marshall. Coverage of the game gets underway at 5:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Brewers give Sox dose of reality

By LEE VERNOY

Great Falls Tribune Sports Writer

For an inning and a third Saturday night, it looked like Yunior Novoa was going to have a game that would do wonders for his earned run average.

Unfortunately, that fifth out never came for him, as the Northern Division-leading Helena Brewers shelled Novoa for seven earned runs in the second inning en route to a 16-4 rout of the Great Falls White Sox that disappointed 3,105 fans at Centene Stadium.

The 6-foot-3, 175-pound southpaw looked strong in the first, giving up only a one-out single to Michael Bell. Bell was thrown out stealing before Angel Salome flied out to end the frame.

Novoa started strong in the second, getting Milwaukee's top draft pick, Ryan Braun, to fan on a 1-2 pitch.

Then, the wheels came off the wagon.

Catcher Brad Willcutt deposited the next pitch over the right field wall and onto the driving range for his first home run of the year, and Novoa didn't retire another Helena batter. The Brewers loaded the bases via singles from Brendan Katin and Ned Yost and a walk to Stephen Chapman. Then Novoa walked Kenny Holmberg to make it 2-0. Charlie Fermaint lined a single to left to score Yost, then Bell walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home Chapman before Great Falls manager John Orton replaced him with righty Luis Pena.

Pena struck out Salome for the second out, then Braun ripped a single to left that drove home two and moved Bell to third. Braun took a wide turn around first and got caught in a rundown that got Bell across the plate before Braun was tagged out to end the inning.

And Novoa's ERA, which was 10.80 to start the game, ballooned to 16.87, while he suffered his third loss in as many games.

Unfortunately, all five White Sox pitchers took a hit to their ERAs as Helena amassed 21 hits and took advantage of seven walks and two Great Falls errors. Every Helena batter got at least one hit.

"Hitting is contagious, just like good pitching and good defense," said Helena skipper Ed Sedar.

Braun, a 6-2, 200-pound third baseman, finished the game just a double short of the cycle, going 3-for-6 with four RBI. His first professional home run came in the fourth, a two-run job off Pena that was helped by a stiff breeze blowing out to right field. He added a three-bagger in the seventh.

"(Braun) had been pressing, and I talked to him before this evening's game and told him to quit pressing," Sedar said. "I don't know if it had anything to do with it, but he showed why (Milwaukee) picked him number one.

"His swing is improving almost every time he's out there. He wasn't here for our minicamp after the draft, and he got off to somewhat of a slow start, but things look like they're starting to click for him."

And it didn't stop with Braun: Bell drove in three runs with a single and a double. Chapman scored three times and had three hits and a walk. Holmberg had an RBI double to his bases-loaded walk.

Meanwhile, Ryan Marion was keeping White Sox bats muffled, if not totally quiet. He gave up a two-run homer to DH Mike Landry in the third and a two-run jack to Francisco Hernandez in the sixth, but not much of anything else as he earned his first win.

Wilfredo Laureano worked a scoreless seventh, and Tyler Morrison struck out three in two perfect innings to finish the game off.

"Actually, all of our pitchers pitched really well," Sedar added. "(Helena pitching coach) Mark Littell has a plan each day as to what they're doing, and they just go out and stick by their plan."

The same two teams will go at it today at 4 p.m. in the second game of the series. Helena will send 6-9 right-hander Eric Thomas (0-1, 4.76) against Sox lefty Eric Everly (0-1, 2.79).

West Virginia Site Game Summary:

Ramirez Blanks the Power

Salisbury, MD ? Luis Ramirez was 1-1 with a 2.60 ERA against the Power this season, and on Saturday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium in Salisbury, Maryland, he threw a complete game shutout as the Shorebirds went on to beat the Power by the final score of 6-0.

The Shorebirds plated the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a two-out, two-run single from Paco Figueroa to take a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning Jason Fransz delivered an RBI double and Brian Bock smacked an RBI single to give the Shorebirds a 4-0 lead. Arturo Rivas knocked in Jake Duncan on an RBI triple in the bottom of the eighth inning and Rivas scored later in the eighth when Bock delivered his second RBI single of the game. Ramirez allowed five hits, walked one batter, and struck out eight batters in his complete game shutout.

Ramirez (4-4) earned the victory, and Greg Kloosterman (3-11) obtained the loss. The Power fall to 3-6 in the second half with the loss and the Shorebirds improve to 6-3 with the win.

The Power will conclude the series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Power will throw RHP Forrest Martin (1-4, 4.93) and the Shorebirds will counter with RHP Dennis Robinson (2-7, 5.54). The first pitch is scheduled for 1:35 PM (12:35 Central).

FIREWORKS IN THE SKY AND ON THE FIELD FOR THE MANATEES

VIERA, FL ? Tim Dillard got his third straight win and the Manatees pounded out ten hits as they sailed to a 4-2 win Saturday night in front of a packed house at Space Coast Stadium.

Dillard has won all three of his last starts and has allowed just two earned runs as he improves his record to 5-7 for the Manatees who are now 7-3. He allowed just four hits while whiffing six Daytona batters.

The offense also has been on fire in the second half. The ?Tees put up a run in the first and then really got rolling in the second. Lou Palmisano, Jeff Eure and C.J. Medlin led off the second with three straight singles to load the bases. Steve Sollmann hit a sac fly to center to score Palmisano. Robby Deevers would then come up and smack a bases-clearing double to left to get two across and give the Manatees their four runs.

Brian Wolfe would come in the ninth and pitch a 1-2-3 inning to pick up his fifth save.

The Manatees now go on the road for their longest road trip of the season that spans 12 days and eleven games including three with Daytona and four each with Clearwater and Dunedin before returning home on July 15. Josh Habel takes the mound for the Manatees in Daytona tomorrow night against Alfredo Polanco who was just called up from the Peoria Chiefs.

Back-to-back HRs doom Sounds

Memphis shutout foiled by Branyan's solo shot

By MAURICE PATTON

Tennessean Staff Writer

Russell Branyan's rehabilitation assignment continues to be successful ? which was one of the few positives for the Nashville Sounds last night.

Branyan's massive second-inning leadoff home run over the right-center-field fence and onto Chestnut Street helped the Sounds avoid a shutout in a 6-1 loss to visiting Memphis.

With the solo shot, all five of Branyan's hits since joining the club on June 27 have been for extra bases. The previous four hits were all doubles.

"It felt good to get good wood on a ball," said Branyan, who broke his left middle finger on a bunt attempt on June 1. "I'm just trying to get my legs back under me as far as playing nine innings, get my finger feeling good so I can get my swing back."

Starting in right field for the third consecutive night, Branyan moved to third base for the final three innings last night. He was not involved defensively, though.

"I hadn't been in there for so long ? four weeks," he said. "It was good to get over there. I didn't get any action, but it felt good to get back on some dirt.

"It's day-to-day. I'll get here and they'll let me know what I'm going to do. I don't know what the plan is for (today)."

Past Branyan, Nashville managed little offensively. Memphis starter Adam Wainwright held the Sounds in check. The big right-hander gave up just five hits in eight innings of work while striking out six. He also snapped a three-game losing streak.

"We saw him in Double-A with the Braves," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said. "He's got good movement on his fastball, keeps it low and mixes in the changeup and the curve. He did a good job."

Across the field, Nashville starter Jeff Housman lasted just three innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks ? including a two-out base on balls in each of his innings. After Branyan's homer tied the game at 1-all, Memphis touched up Housman for back-to-back homers in the third by John Nelson and Brandon Berger to take the lead for good.

Early exit: Nashville center fielder Dave Krynzel was ejected from last night's game for complaining from the dugout about home plate umpire A.J. Wendel's strike zone.

Krynzel, who had just struck out looking with the bases loaded in the fifth, came back out and drew a line about six inches off the plate to mark where he thought the last pitch of his at-bat was. He then brushed against Wendel's right shoulder as he left the field, likely assuring himself a suspension as well as a fine.

Jarvis fan club: According to the Sounds front office, about 30 fans are expected at today's game in support of Memphis pitcher Kevin Jarvis. The former Sounds starter lives in Franklin during the offseason.

Game at a glance

? Losing pitcher: Housman (3-7).

? Big stick: Branyan, 1-for-4, solo home run.

? How they lost: Memphis snapped a 1-1 deadlock in the third inning with a two-run home run by John Nelson, followed by a Brandon Berger solo homer. Nashville issued nine walks in the loss ? five with two outs ? but struck out 11.

? What they said: "I didn't know what to expect. I've still got a little pain, but I've got to play through it and try to get back into the swing of things." ? Branyan, who is continuing to rehab a broken left middle finger.

? Tonight's pitchers: Sounds ? RHP Rick Helling (5-3, 4.17 ERA). Redbirds ? RHP Kevin Jarvis (6-2, 2.76).

Well, Krynzel's sure showing some fire

When he went through his much talked about Huntsville slump, he also got himself thrown out of a game. Its so different from the way he normally behaves, that it really does show how frustrated these slumps make him.

I'm going to be ridiculed for even suggesting this (probably rightly so http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) but I think he needs Major League AB's. I'd like to see if Butch could work some magic with him, I'm pretty certain Frank et al can't.
