Cubs Down Sounds In Series Finale, 8-7

DES MOINES ? Felix Pie belted a grand slam to key a six-run fifth inning for the Iowa Cubs in an 8-7 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park in the finale of a four-game series.

 

With the win over the Sounds (62-40), Iowa earned a series split and reduced Nashville?s lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division to 5 ½ games. The Sounds finished their road trip with an even 4-4 record.

 

The teams combined for 15 runs on the afternoon after scoring only 15 total runs between them in the first three games of the series on Friday and Saturday. Nashville lost Sunday?s game despite out-hitting Iowa, 15-7, in the contest.

 

Nashville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning with a two-out rally against Cubs starter Cory Bailey, who was the Sounds? closer in 2000. After the first two batters of the frame were retired, Charles Thomas and Drew Anderson (3-for-5) ripped back-to-back doubles to account for the first run before team RBI leader Joe Dillon increased his total to 69 on the year with a run-scoring single to right.

 

The Sounds added a run in the fourth when Algona, Iowa native Brad Nelson continued his strong series with a leadoff double to the wall in right-center then scored on Vinny Rottino?s RBI single to increase the lead to 3-0.

 

Nashville starter Elmer Dessens, making his second rehab appearance with the club, retired the first 10 Iowa batters in order before the Cubs broke through for a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pie (3-for-4) reached on a one-out single and came home on Matt Murton?s two-out RBI double into the right field corner to pull the home team within 3-1.

 

Nelson continued his big day in the fifth when he belted a two-run homer to right off Bailey to increase the Nashville lead to 5-1.

 

Dennis Sarfate took over on the Nashville hill in the bottom of the fifth and ran into immediate trouble. After Iowa loaded the bases with a single, double, and walk to open the frame, the right-hander issued a five-pitch walk to pinch-hitter Jorge Cortes to force home Geovany Soto and make it a 5-2 game. Eric Patterson followed and drew another bases-loaded walk from Sarfate, who was removed after facing five batters and retiring none of them. Patterson?s walk plated Josh Kroeger from third and decreased the Nashville lead to 5-3.

 

Greg Aquino inherited a no-out, bases-loaded jam from Sarfate and promptly gave up a grand slam on his second pitch to Pie, the Iowa outfielder?s ninth home run of the year. The blast to right, the second slam allowed by Nashville pitchers this season, propelled the Cubs to a 7-5 lead.

 

The Sounds pulled back within a run at 7-6 in the top of the sixth when Anderson tripled with one out a then scored on a Thomas groundout, but the Cubs responded in the bottom of the frame when Kroeger belted a one-out solo homer to center off Nashville reliever Marino Salas, the first baseman?s seventh roundtripper of the year.

 

Vinny Rottino (3-for-5) made it a one-run contest once again at 8-7 in the top of the seventh as the Sounds scored for the fifth consecutive inning. The backstop ripped a two-out solo homer to left-center to greet Cubs reliever Ben Howard, his eighth longball of the year and first in over a month.

 

Nashville had a chance to tie the contest or take the lead in the top of the eighth inning when it loaded the bases with two outs against the Iowa bullpen before Andy Abad was caught looking by Clay Rapada to end the inning as the Cubs escaped the jam unscathed.

 

Bailey (3-1), who left in line for the loss before Iowa?s six-run outburst in the fifth, picked up the win after allowing five runs on 11 hits over five innings in his second start of the year for the Cubs.

 

Rapada recorded the final four outs to notch his team-leading 15th save for Iowa.

 

Sarfate (2-6) was saddled with the loss after he allowed five runs on two hits and three walks and did not retire a batter in his 28-pitch outing.

 

Dessens turned in another solid rehab outing for the Sounds but did not factor in the decision. The right-hander allowed one run on two hits while striking out four batters over four innings. He threw 52 pitches, 34 for strikes. In two outings, Dessens has posted a 1.35 ERA (1er/6.2ip) with no walks and six strikeouts for the Sounds.

 

The Sounds take Monday off before opening an eight-game homestand on Tuesday at Greer Stadium. Nashville will welcome Fresno (AAA-Giants) and Sacramento (AAA-A?s) to town for four-game series, their lone meeting with each club in 2007.

 

Left-hander Zach Jackson (9-5, 4.79) will man the bump for Nashville in Tuesday?s 7 p.m. series opener and face Fresno left-hander Travis Blackley (7-5, 4.62).

Brewers take down Chukars

 

Lee Haydel and Steffan Wilson drove in two runs apiece as host Helena held on to defeat Idaho Falls, 7-5, on Sunday.

 

Wilson, who is hitting .433 in his first 67 at-bats with the Brewers, laced a two-run triple in the first inning and Haydel ripped an RBI double in the second and a run-scoring single in the third.

 

Jonathan Lucroy and Caleb Gindl each had two hits and an RBI for Helena (22-10), which won its eighth straight.

 

Brewers starter Jose Garcia (5-1) allowed two runs on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts in six innings. Chad Robinson and Brock Kjeldgaard combined to surrender three runs on four hits over the final three frames.

 

Rubi Koko and Anthony Seratelli went 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece. Devery Van De Keere and O.D. Gonzalez chipped in an RBI each for the Chukars (19-13), who have lost seven straight.

Brewers Take Over First Place

 

HELENA-- The Helena Brewers took care of business by sweeping the Idaho Falls Chukars while Great Falls dropped its second game in a row. Helena now jumps into first place in the Pioneer League North Division with six games to go in the first half.

 

The heat persisted throughout Sunday afternoon in Helena, but the Brewers proved just as hot to win their eighth game in a row. Helena scored all of its runs in the first three innings and held on to sweep Idaho Falls by a score of 7-5.

 

The Brewers scored three runs in the first and second innings, and added a lone run in the third to take a 7-0 lead. Although the Helena offense faltered in the latter innings, the Brewer pitching staff proved effective much as it has during the team's winning streak. Starter Jose Garcia went six innings and gave up two runs on four hits for his fifth win of the season. Garcia (5-1) now ties Luis Montano of Billings for a league-high five wins.

 

Reliever Chad Robinson pitched two innings of one-run, one-hit ball while Brock Kjeldgaard closed out the game after allowing two runs. Idaho Falls scored two runs in the ninth inning and brought the tying run to the plate, but Kjeldgaard held on to secure the Brewer win.

 

Offensively Lee Haydel and Steffan Wilson led the way for the Brew Crew. Haydel finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Wilson ended the day with a 2-for-3 and two RBI performance. Five Brewers combined for 11 hits; each had a multi-hit game. Others with multi-hit days included Jonathan Lucroy, Caleb Gindl, and David Fonseca .

 

The Brewers have now swept two consecutive series and will look to extend their win streak to nine games on Monday night when Helena plays host to the Casper Rockies at 7:05 p.m.

EIGHTH INNING CURSE HAUNTS POWER

 

One night after snapping a 4-4 tie with a four run eighth inning, the Delmarva Shorebirds scored five times in the eighth inning of Sunday?s game at Appalachian Power Park and erased a 3-1 deficit to beat the Power 6-4.

 

The Power took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Andrew Lefave, Chuckie Caufield and Taylor Green ripped three consecutive two-out singles. Green?s base knock plated Lefave and Caufield scored during the play on an errant throw from Danny Figueroa. Victor Castillo?s Sacrifice Fly plated Paul Winterling in the top of the second to put the Shorebirds on the board. West Virginia answered in the bottom of the second on Charlie Fermaint?s RBI single.

 

It remained a 3-1 game until the Shorebirds scored five times in the eighth inning. Billy Rowell doubled in the first run and scored along with Miguel Abreu and Winterling on David Cash?s two out double. Cash scored later in the inning on Michael Pierce?s base-hit. The Power plated their final run in the ninth inning on Martin Maldonado?s second single of the game. Chad Thall struck out Andrew Lefave with runners on first and second to end the game.

 

Ryan Ouelette (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to get the victory, Chad Thall (17) got the save and Omar Aguilar (7-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering all five runs on four hits in the eighth. Jeremy Jeffress pitched six strong innings, allowing just a run on three hits.

 

The Power fell to 63-36 overall and 15-16 in the second half, while the Shorebirds improved to 48-49 overall and 14-16 in the second half with the win. The Power have now lost five in a row, and they?ve been outscored 16-0 in the eighth inning during the streak. Steve Chapman, Taylor Green and Martin Maldonado all had two hits for the Power.

 

The Power will continue the four game series against the Delmarva Shorebirds at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night. The Power will start left hander Brae Wright (6-5, 5.53) and the Shorebirds will counter with right hander Tim Bascom (1-0, 1.78) . The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Brewers hold onto first place with sweep of Chukars

The Brewer bats were hot, the pitchers were throwing heat and the stands were scorching.

 

And that was just the first three innings.

 

Helena scored seven runs in the first three innings, starter Jose Garcia pitched well and the Brewers coasted past the Idaho Falls Chukars 7-5 Sunday at Kindrick Legion Field. The win was Helena's eighth in a row and put the Brewers at first place in the Pioneer League's North Division, up one game in the standings over Great Falls.

 

The Helena offense showed up, once again behind the bat of first baseman Steffan Wilson. The Brewers jumped right out against Idaho Falls starter John Leonard, who was ineffective, missing spots and leaving offspeed pitches up in the strike zone. He had to come from behind in the count repeatedly, and Helena wasted no time getting to him.

 

In the first, Jonathan Lucroy drew a two-out walk, followed by a Caleb Gindl single. Then, Wilson hit a 1-1 curveball deep into the gap in right center, where it bounced off the middle of the wall. Wilson made it to third, but Idaho Falls third baseman Devery Van De Keere couldn't handle the cutoff throw and the ball went into the Chukar dugout, sending Wilson home.

 

Wilson also hit a double, along with the run and two RBI from the first inning.

 

"I'm staying back," said Wilson. "I had the day off (Saturday), and today I did some tee work. (Brewers hitting coach Norberto Martin) has been helping. I feel good."

 

Wilson wasn't the only one hitting the ball. Five Brewers had multi-hit games, including centerfielder Lee Haydel, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored.

 

In the second, Anthony Wycklendt took a pitch in the head with one out. A single by shortstop David Fonseca left two on for Haydel, who singled to bring in Wycklendt. Fonseca tried to score on the play, but was thrown out by Chukar leftfielder Rubi Koko. Matt Cline followed with another single that plated Haydel, and the Brewers were up 6-0.

 

"Anytime you get runs early like that, it eases things up," said Brewers manager Jeff Isom.

 

The Brewer faithful survived a scary moment early on when Garcia took a liner from the bat of Van De Keere off the leg. Luckily, the ball skipped to Fonseca who threw to first for the third out, and Garcia came back to pitch five more innings.

 

Through the first three frames, Garcia was nearly untouchable. He retired the first nine by way of seven ground balls and two strikeouts.

 

"Garcia gave us the opportunity to win the ballgame," said Isom.

 

The first hint of trouble Garcia faced was in his second time through the Chukar order. Leadoff man Adrian Ortiz led off with an infield hit when Fonseca made a great sliding stop, but couldn't throw out the speedy centerfielder. Koko followed with a double that brought in Ortiz. Next Van De Keere's single brought home Koko, but the rally ended with a 5-4-3 Brewer double play.

 

The Brewers used an unusual double play to get out of another jam in the fifth when Chukars Anthony Seratelli and Joe Billick got on with no outs. Zach Evangelho then hit a sharp bouncer to Wilson, who went to Fonseca for the first out at second. Fonseca threw to first where Garcia was covering to end the 3-6-1 twin killing.

 

"The double plays got us out of jams," said Isom. "That was two plays that changed the complexity of the game."

 

Near the end, the Chukars made things interesting. In the top of the ninth, down 7-3, Idaho Falls plated their first two batters before Helena's second reliever, Brock Kjeldgaard, got Billick to pop up to Fonseca for the last out.

 

The win completed a sweep of the Chukars, and put Helena ahead of the White Sox with the first half of the season winding down. The team that wins each half automatically advances to the playoffs at the end of the season. Overall, the Brewers like their chances.

 

"Lately we've been getting the lead early," said Wilson. "We've gotten timely hitting and the pitching has been holding it down. (The pitchers) have done a great job."

 

Next the Brewers, who went to 22-10 with the win, host the Casper Rockies for three games to end their current homestand.

Power pitcher has plenty of fans

It was an extra special Family Fun Day at Appalachian Power Park on Sunday evening for West Virginia Power ace pitcher Jeremy Jeffress.

 

Jeffress pitched another gem on the mound, only allowing one run on three hits over six innings and left the game with the Power sporting a 3-1 lead.

 

However, he didn't figure into the decision as the Power bullpen blew the two-run lead as Delmarva scored five runs in the eighth inning to earn a 6-3 South Atlantic League baseball victory.

 

Despite the team's loss, it was a very meaningful day for Jeffress. He had 50 of his closest family and friends come to Charleston from his hometown of South Boston, Va., for the weekend to see him pitch.

 

"It was a great feeling and an honor to have them here," Jeffress said. "I have a great family who support me everywhere and anywhere.

 

"I live in a small town so when they get out, they have a lot of fun. It seemed like they were having a great time."

 

Little did the huge gathering know they would be much more than bystanders, and actually participants in many of the Power on-field promotions.

 

Jeffress' mother, Yolanda, opened the game by singing the National Anthem and got a standing ovation for her powerful performance.

 

One of Jeffress' little cousins was the YMCA Junior Public Address Announcer and announced the Power players in the bottom the second inning.

 

Many of the youngsters in Jeffress' gathering participated in some of the on-field promotions between innings and one of the family members won the contest for dirtiest car in the parking lot and won a free car wash.

 

Jeffress' uncle, Cecil Stokes, even had the opportunity to play the Express Mortgage Trivia Contest and correctly answered the question, thus winning the huge entourage and everyone in Section 108 behind home plate a free Chic-fil-A chicken sandwich.

 

"I was a little nervous but got through it with the support of my comrades," Stokes joked. "They helped me with the answer. They were yelling, ?Go with B'. You have to go with the crowd."

 

Stokes and the rest of the gathering were extremely pleased with getting to watch Jeffress pitch and enjoy the festivities of the ballpark as well as their overall experience in Charleston.

 

"We love West Virginia. It's a pretty nice area with good people," Stokes said. "Most of us had never been here but we had a terrific time and want to come back.

 

"Plus, anytime we get to watch Jeremy is always a thrill and a blessing. And the kids loved the entertainment. It was real exciting watching the game and all the fun that comes with it."

 

It certainly wasn't much fun for the Delmarva batters when Jeffress' was on the mound. Only once did they get at least two runners on base in the six innings of work for the Power right-handed pitcher.

 

But as soon as Jeffress left, the floodgates opened in the eighth inning off Power reliever Omar Aguilar. The Shorebirds scored five runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead.

 

The big play was a three-run double with two outs by left fielder David Cash with Delmarva still trailing 3-2. In the decisive inning, the Shorebirds had four hits and drew two walks as well.

 

"I tip my hat to Jeffress, we got some good swings off him but never could get anything against him," Delmarva Manager Gary Kendall said.

 

"We are the type of team that has to keep games close and we were able to do that. We responded and were able to get a big hit. But Jeffress has a great future."

 

Taylor Green, Martin Maldonado, and Steve Chapman all had two hits each to pace the Power offense that out-hit Delmarva 12-9.

 

With the loss, the Power has lost five games in a row, their longest losing streak of the season.

 

They are now 15-16 in the second half and 63-36 overall.

 

An eight-game homestand continues tonight (7:05, 6:05 Central) with Game Three of a four-game series against Delmarva. Hagerstown visits Power Park for four games starting Wednesday night.
