A shower from the Power

Jake Stump

Charleston Daily Mail Staff

Hollywood's hottest couple could have spent their honeymoon with the hot dog guy, the Toastman and Pyro the mascot.

Instead, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck will have to settle for a baby shower with those characters. Or at least they're invited.

You, too, are invited to Charleston's largest baby shower Friday night at Appalachian Power Park, where the West Virginia Power baseball team will host "Jennifer Garner Baby Shower Night."

"I don't know if they'll make it or not," Power general manager Andy Milovich said about Garner and Affleck. "It's a hectic time for them with a marriage and a baby on the way. Hopefully, they're in need of some R and R and will come out."

Publicists for the two actors confirmed last week that Charleston sweetie and "Alias" star Garner, 33, tied the knot with Affleck, 32, on a Caribbean island Wednesday. Representatives also confirmed that Garner is pregnant with her first child.

Boston TV station WCVB reported that Garner and Affleck were rumored to spend Fourth of July weekend in Charleston with Garner's family, but Milovich said he believes the two are still on their honeymoon.

Part owner of the Power Alan Levin is in Los Angeles and has ties to Hollywood, Milovich said. Through Levin, the team was able to officially invite the two to Appalachian Power Park for the baby shower.

Affleck's recent attire indicates he may actually consider the offer. Affleck, a long-time Boston Red Sox fans, was photographed wearing a Power T-shirt in "US" magazine in May.

Affleck hasn't been to any games, so a friend or relative of Garner must have picked up a shirt for him, team officials said. If Affleck and Garner accepted the invitation for Friday, the team would likely host them in one of the luxury suites. Then again, they'd be welcome to sit wherever they wanted, Milovich said.

Of course, it would be rude to not invite the family to the baby shower. Milovich said he'd like to make the occasion a family affair by hosting the entire Garner clan.

Garner's mother, Pat, contacted this morning, declined comment.

Milovich acknowledged of Friday's event, "This is a tongue-in-cheek promotion, but it's also a time to do something fun and benefit a great cause."

As part of the promotion, the Power asks fans to bring a "shower gift" in the form of diapers, baby wipes, food, formula, wash, shampoo, lotion and baby clothing or maternity clothing. Items will be donated to Starting Points, a local nonprofit organization that serves needy children under 8 and their families.

"To do that with the help of Jennifer and Ben, it seemed like a great idea," Milovich said. "This is a chance to celebrate the life of a significant Charlestonian and benefit a charity at the same time."

Any fan that brings a donation to the ticket window will be admitted into the game for free. Season ticket holders will receive a ticket voucher for a future game.

Also, if you can prove that your name is Jennifer or Garner, you'll receive a free ticket to the game.

After the game, the 2003 superhero flick starring Garner and Affleck, "Daredevil," will be shown on the big screen.

It's not known whether Rod Blackstone, the Power's Toastman, will give the couple the ceremonial toast.

were going to need to do something with Brad Willcut pretty soon, with 3 catchers in Helena hes the one with the least potential at age 23. i guess a position change isnt out of the question either but something needs to be done. he cant throw anyone out as teams are running on him like crazy 5 sb the other night against him and 4 more tonight. maybe i should give him a little more time to transition into the pro game though as he was just recently drafted. I would just rather have Opdyke and Salome alternate at catcher as both seem to have alot more upside than he does.

Brewers suffer first home loss

By TOM COTTON - IR Sports Editor

There were some leftover fireworks Tuesday at Kindrick-Legion Field.

The Helena Brewers endured some shaky umpiring and saw their manager and pitching coach ejected during a wild 6-4 Pioneer League loss to the Great Falls White Sox.

It was the second loss in a row for the Brewers (11-3) and their first losing streak of the season. The White Sox (5-9) scored the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning on a very questionable play.

With one out and Garrett Guest at the plate, Great Falls executed a squeeze play that seemingly was going to go awry.

Guest missed the bunt for the third strike, hanging Tartaglia out to dry, but the White Sox centerfielder charged home and was three or four feet outside the base line before he touched home. Home plate umpire Justin Moore called Tartaglia safe, putting the White Sox up 5-4. That set off long and heated discussion between the Brewers coaching staff and the umpiring crew and eventually pitching coach Mark Littell was tossed, following manager Ed Sedar who was ejected earlier in the game, by Moore.

"I have been in a lot of pickles," the speedy Tartaglia said. "It is something we work on. My job is to make the pitchers better and make my self better so we work on that."

Sedar and Littell didn't have any comment about the umpiring efforts in the game, but Sedar said that Great Falls, who stand six games behind the Brewers in the North Division standings, came to play.

"They are coming to battle and maybe we are taking them for granted," Sedar said.

Sedar said that the Brewers have to improve on the basepaths. Three times the Brewers were thrown out at third base. Stephen Chapman was thrown out by Tartaglia in the fifth inning trying to take an extra base. Michael Bell was picked off at third in the sixth and in the eighth Matt Gamel was thrown out, trying to advance on a passed ball.

"Hitting isn't always going to be, but base running should be," Sedar said.

Much of the Brewers hitting came from Ryan Braun who hit a massive two-run home run over the centerfield wall in the fourth. Braun, a first-round pick from the University of Miami, was 2-for-3 in the game. Agustin Septimo also had two hits for Helena.

Great Falls did much of their damage in the fourth, when four runs crossed the plate. Rafael Lluberes started solidly, but had control problems in the fourth, walking two batters after Francisco Hernandez led off the inning with a single.

Lluberes had a cracked fingernail and had to leave the game midway through the frame and he gave way to Dane Renkert who gave up an RBI single to Javier Castillo and a two-RBI single to Matt Sharp.

Sharp was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Great Falls. Hernandez also collected two hits for Great Falls.

The two teams will meet again tonight for their fifth straight time and Clayton Richard will throw for Helena. Tyler Morrison will pitch for Great Falls.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Heath Phillips tossed a complete game and Andy Gonzalez knocked in a pair of runs in Birmingham?s 3-1 win over Huntsville Tuesday night in the second game of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Barons have taken the first two games to improve to 10-3 in the second half, while the Stars dropped to 7-7 and fell a game behind West Tenn and Carolina for the top spot in the North Division.

Cipriano Garcia, playing in his first game with the Barons, singled with one out in the third and moved to second base when Jerry Owens drew a walk from Stars? starter Glenn Woolard, making the start in place of Manny Parra, who was sidelined by a sore shoulder. Woolard uncorked a wild pitch that advanced both runners before Gonzalez sent a ground ball just inside the first base line that rolled into the right field corner for a double that scored both runners to put the visitors on top 2-0.

Nelson Castro singled with two outs in the fifth, moved to second base on a single by Jeff Winchester and scored on a base hit by Tony Gwynn, Jr., who ended a 19 at-bat hitless streak, to trim the lead to 2-1.

Casey Rogowski drew a leadoff walk from Woolard in the sixth and scored an insurance run on a base hit by Ryan Sweeney, the White Sox?s second rated prospect, according to Baseball America. Chris Young lined out to shortstop Enrique Cruz, who tried to double off Rogowski but instead sailed his throw into the stands, allowing Rogowski to advance to third. Sweeney then hit a high, chopping ground ball over second baseman Callix Crabbe, who was drawn in with the rest of the infield to try to cut off another run.

The Stars loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame but Ben Van Iderstine grounded into a double play to end the inning. Huntsville is now 19-for-89 in bases loaded situations this season. Phillips then retired the side in order over the next three frames to nail down his sixth win of the season and fourth on the road. The southpaw fanned three and did not walk a batter in his longest outing of the year.

The series continues Wednesday night with right-hander David Bradley taking the hill for the Stars against Barons left-hander Daniel Haigwood, making his first double-A start. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Lewis, Gallardo propel Power past Lexington

The West Virginia Power beat the Lexington Legends 9-5 Wednesday night to pick up its fourth straight home win at Appalachian Power Park.

The Power (5-7) used timely hitting, good baserunning, and solid pitching to hand the Legends their fifth straight loss and move into a tie with Lexington for fifth place in the South Atlantic League?s Northern Division.

Designated hitter Will Lewis went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Power, including a three-run triple in the fourth. West Virginia extended its lead as high as 7-2 before a late Legends rally.

Power right-hander Yovani Gallardo (2-3) started and went six strong innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs.

West Virginia is now 4-0 at home since the Sally League All-Star Game.

Legends third baseman Bryan Triplett led off the game with a single and moved to third on two walks by Gallardo. First baseman Drew Sutton grounded into a double play that scored Triplett from third, giving Lexington a 1-0 lead.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Legends starting pitcher Evan Englebrook walked the first three batters he faced in the second inning to load the bases and set up a Power rally.

The Power got on the board on right fielder Adam Mannon?s grounder to short that scored Josh Brady from third to tie the game at 1. The next batter, Alcides Escobar, hit a grounder to shortstop Clint McGill that scored Clay Blevins from third.

West Virginia resumed the scoring in a big four-run fourth that started with a Tony Festa single to center off Englebrook. After walking Mannon, Englebrook made an error trying to corral an Escobar bunt and wasn?t able to keep him from loading the bases. After Hernan Iribarren lined out, Lewis? triple cleared the bases and give the Power a 5-1 lead. First baseman Grant Richardson knocked Lewis in with a sacrifice fly to right to make it 6-1.

Englebrook didn?t last much longer: In the next at-bat, he walked Hasan Rasheed and was replaced with Raymar Diaz. The Lexington starter had control problems in his 3 2/3 innings, surrendering four hits, four earned runs, four walks, and he hit two batters in the first inning.

Gallardo, meanwhile, was able to hold designated hitter Hunter Pence, one of the best hitters in the South Atlantic League, in check. Pence, a Northern Division All-Star, entered the game leading the league in home runs (24) and slugging percentage (.711). Pence went 0-for-2 against Gallardo.

The Legends got their second run in the top of the sixth, with right fielder Francisco Caraballo?s two-out single scoring Drew Sutton from third.

The Power ran the lead back to five in the bottom of the sixth on Rasheed?s line single to right that plated Iribarren from second, making it 7-2. Iribarren had earlier swiped his 29th base.

Lexington made a game of it in the top of the seventh, after Power manager Ramon Aviles made the switch to reliever Derek DeCarlo. Clint McGill doubled to start the inning, and Brandon Barganier moved him to third on a sacrifice. Pence singled in the next at-bat to score McGill for a 7-3 score.

A wild pitch by DeCarlo with Sutton batting allowed Pence to move to second with two outs. Sutton promptly doubled him in. First baseman Ole Sheldon?s RBI single drew the Legends within 7-5. After a walk to Caraballo, Aviles brought in all-star Robert Hinton to put out the fire.

The Power scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to put the game away. Escobar and Iribarren hit back-to-back singles to start the inning, and Lewis knocked Escobar in with a single to make it 8-5. A Richardson double scored Iribarren from third to finish the scoring.

Englebrook (6-2) took the loss for Lexington (5-7). Gallardo (2-3) earned the win for the Power. Hinton pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his fifth save.

The Power goes for the sweep tonight before hitting the road for Hagerstown for a two-game series. First pitch is set for 7:05 tonight (6:05 Central).

Mass

Living here in Arizona I often wondered why the games (AZ rookie) weren't played at night also... I came to find out that the games aren't even played in the Spring Training stadiums that most teams have out here... Why? I have no idea... I stated in yesterday's post that these games are played in what seem like High School/ Rec center type fields... Chain link fences, blistering hot metal seat bleachers with hardly a scoreboard and very little shade... To be honest, the local little leagues have some better fields than the ones used for the AZ rookie league... Very strange to say the least...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif

Ump responds on short notice

Michael Dailey

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

After a long day at the office, Dave Burford was looking forward to a quiet evening at home.

"I'm not exactly sure what I would have done," said Burford of his Tuesday night plans. "I would have just been doing some things around the house, writing some bills and helping my 14-year-old son get ready for a trip to Kings Island on Thursday morning."

After a late afternoon phone call from West Virginia Power General Manager Andy Milovich, Burford traded his evening at home in Charleston for a much more intense after-work experience.

Burford, an employee at Columbia Gas, filled in for South Atlantic League umpire Roy Prauner in the Power's 9-5 win over Lexington before 2,355 fans at Appalachian Power Park.

Given the very short notice, Burford teamed admirably with SAL umpire Phil Mulroe in what was, at times, a heated contest between South Atlantic League Northern Division rivals.

"Actually I didn't find out I was umpiring until I was leaving my regular day job," said Buford, a 49-year-old Charleston High graduate. "It was almost 5:30, and I was getting in my car and starting it up, when I got a phone call from the general manager.

"I talked to Andy at about 5:25 and I was here at 6:15 p.m."

For Burford, an umpire since his days as a student at West Virginia University in the spring of 1977, Tuesday's game wasn't his first professional gig, but it was his first at the new ballpark.

"I've done some games before over at Watt Powell," said Burford, a member of the Kanawha Valley Umpires Association. "I did games when they were the Alley Cats, the Wheelers and even back when they were the Charlies in the late '70s.

"This park is beautiful," said Burford, whose home on Capitol Hill overlooks the new ballyard.

"The atmosphere is much different here than at Watt Powell. The people are right on top of you, where as at Watt Powell, they were a little farther from the field."

That intimacy with the crowd helps keep the men in blue on their toes, but also makes it easier for disgruntled fans to have their say.

"Even though the rain kept the crowd down a little bit, they were a vocal crowd tonight," said Buford. "You better believe it.

"But I enjoy it. The professional and college games are much different than the high school game.

"The games are quicker and the players at this level are a little faster. There are more bang, bang plays.

"We had a couple of really close plays, but that's what it's all about. You've got to make tough calls."

The Power (5-7), winners of two straight and four in a row at home, jumped on Lexington starter Evan Englebrook (6-2) early and held a 6-1 lead when they chased him from the game with two outs in the fourth.

The big hit was a one-out, three-run triple by designated hitter Will Lewis in the fourth.

"I was just looking for a pitch to hit with two strikes," said Lewis, a 32nd-round pick in the 2003 draft. "I was just lucky enough to get a pitch that I could drive into the gap."

Lewis added an RBI single in the eighth inning, while Hernan Iribarren added three hits and Grant Richardson chipped in with a pair of RBI.

West Virginia right handed starter Yovani Gallardo (2-3) picked up the win with six strong innings, while Derek DeCarlo and Robert Hinton combined to throw the final three innings, with Hinton getting his fifth save.

Hinton picked up his team leading, fifth save, in allowing just one hit and no runs in the game's final 2 1/3 innings.

The two teams will wrap up a brief three-game homestand tonight at 7:05 p.m. (6:05 Central).

Columbia Gas employee and Charleston resident Dave Burford, who has been an umpire since 1977, had his first experience at Appalachian Power Park on Tuesday.

CUBS END MANATEES STREAK AT FIVE

DAYTONA, FL ? After winning five straight for the first time this season the Manatees couldn?t continue their streak as they fell to the Daytona Cubs 8-1 Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Starter Luis Pena (2-4) allowed six runs on nine hits including a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth before being replaced to start the sixth by Ken Durost. It was just Durost?s third appearance in a month for the Manatees.

Ben Diggins also pitched an inning after serving at both first base and designated hitter in the past few weeks.

The Manatees offense which has been hot in the second half was unable to solve Cubs pitcher Juan Mateo. They managed just five hits and one run off of him while he struck out eight. Ozzie Chavez picked up three of those hits and Adam Heether picked up an RBI double in the first inning.

The Manatees now bus over to the west coast to take on the Clearwater Threshers and Dunedin Blue Jays for eight games in nine days before returning home on July 15 to take on the Ft Myers Miracle.

Ty Taubenheim toes the rubber for the Manatees in the first game of the series versus the Threshers on Wednesday night at Brighthouse Networks Field.
