Stars notebook (through Friday's games)

Mark McCarter, Huntsville Times

Covering the bases

On Wednesday night, after Stars reliever Mitch Stetter blew a save, then found himself with a win when Brad Nelson socked a walk-off homer, manager Don Money had Stetter stand up in the clubhouse. "I've got some bad news,'' Money said. "You're not going to the (Southern League) All-Star Game. They messed up the voting and you didn't make the team.'' Stetter, whose family was already making plans to join him in Mobile, was crestfallen.

Money then said, "You're not going to the All-Star Game. But the reason is, you're going to Triple-A.'' Money, who was in cahoots with pitching coach Rich Sauveur on the practical joke, said, "If you don't have fun in this game, it'll drive you goofy.''

Trivia question: Who was the first Milwaukee Brewer elected to the Major League All-Star Game by fan vote? ... Ironic that Stetter would have a blown save on his last night with the Stars and Nelson Cruz would have three strikeouts on his last night in Huntsville. ... Cruz (.483, three homers, eight RBIs and a nine-game hitting streak since his promotion to Nashville) plays in the Futures Game today in Detroit, which features baseball's premier prospects. ... Brad Nelson has three homers, 11 RBIs and a .471 average (through Friday) in his nine games with the Stars. Though he's fallen behind Cruz, the resurgent Corey Hart and David Krynzel on Milwaukee's "depth chart'' of outfielders, he's still a highly regarded prospect. It wouldn't be surprising to see him as part of a trade as the deadline nears, especially if the Brewers can acquire a pitcher to strengthen the big-league staff. ...

Former Stars catcher Danny Ardoin was promoted by Colorado from Triple-A last month and has been playing regularly in this, his third opportunity in the big leagues. How long before ex-Star Jeff Pickler, batting .328 for the Rockies' Triple-A team, gets his own shot in the majors? ... Trivia answer: Stars manager Don Money, in 1978.

Around the league

Hurricane Dennis has thrown a scare into Southern League officials, with the league's all-star game set for Mobile on Wednesday at 7:05. League president Don Mincher has spent more than a few minutes watching The Weather Channel. There is the obvious fear of devastation in Mobile, but even beyond that there is concern with all the logistics, and transporting players into Mobile late Monday night or early Tuesday morning. ... There is some irony here in that Hurricane Ivan last fall forced the cancellation of the Southern League championship series in which Mobile was playing Tennessee. ...

Despite being in a new city and new park (and having some of the league's top prospects), the Mississippi Braves are averaging only 4,062, fourth in the league behind Jacksonville, Birmingham and Montgomery, where the Biscuits have fallen 500 fans per game behind last year's pace. ... Mississippi manager Brian Snitker, after telling No. 1 prospect Jeff Francoeur he was being promoted to the majors: "He took it a lot better than I did.'' ... Montgomery's Delmon Young, the consensus as the top prospect in the Southern League, has some growing up to do. He recently shunned a USA Today interview request, as well as requests from The Los Angeles Times, Los Angeles Daily News and New York Times, and reportedly asked for an appearance fee from a Montgomery TV station that wanted a post-game interview with him. It's incumbent upon the Devil Rays, and even the Biscuits, to enroll the kid in media training, or perhaps charm school.

Brewings

Triple-A Nashville Sounds (50-39, first place in Pacific Coast League American Division): OF Corey Hart 14-game hit streak that ended Thursday, .309, 8 HRs, 39 RBIs

Single-A West Virginia Power (6-9, seventh in South Atlantic League Northern Division this half): RP Ben Stanczyk 3-1, 1.94 in 29 relief appearances

Rookie League Helena Brewers (14-3, first place in Pioneer League): 3B Ryan Braun, the Brewers' top pick in 2005 draft, .341, 10 RBIs in 10 games, promoted last week to West Virginia

On deck

The Stars play at Mississippi tonight and Monday, then have three days off for the All-Star break. They return to host Carolina for three games Friday through Sunday. Friday will have a fireworks show, Saturday is Bucky Jacobsen bobblehead night and the annual Mayberry Night is on Sunday.

Oh nice. Probably a good thing we ended up with Weeks instead of Kenny Rogers Jr.

Gallardo Tosses Eight Innings in Power Victory

Richardson?s first big hit was a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first inning, driving in Alcides Escobar to give the Power a 1-0 lead. The Suns trailed 1-0 until Ryan Coultas tied the game in the top of the eighth inning on an RBI double. Richardson struck again in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Hasan Rasheed on second base and one out, Richardson hit a double down the left field line to score Rasheed and give the Power their second lead of the game. The Power took the 2-1 lead into the top of the ninth inning where Robert Hinton allowed a one out walk to Carlos Gomez but nothing more, and earned the save.

Kudos to Brad Nelson for drawing a walk leading off the eighth. As Mass Haas pointed out above, the Stars had been set down in order up to that point! Enrique Cruz promptly grounded into a double-play to erase Nelson but Brandon Gemoll doubled to ensure that Mississippi faced *one* batter over the minimum on the night.

Yikes.

The Braves' hurlers that deserve credit include:

- Chuck James, a southpaw selected in the 20th round of the 2002 draft who has been incredibly good as a professional. He did most of the damage, tossing a perfect game through six while striking out eleven of the 18 batters he faced.

- Jason Richardson, a 1999 35th round pick by the Twins who has struggled somewhat as a Brave. He's 25 and not much of a prospect.

- Jay Powell, the former big leaguer drafted way back in 1993 by the Orioles as the 19th-overall pick. He spent last year with the Rangers and went 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA before hurting his shoulder. The Braves signed him with the hope that he'd be able to rehab and help the big league club and he's done very, very well in the Southern League.

An interesting mix.

Just a note re the Nashville game. Glover was down 1-0 in the 6th, but the guys have responded with 4 runs to lead 4-1 now.

The team chasing Nashville (Memphis) for the division lead have won 6 straight and are having trouble making ground. That is a nice, nice team that Nashville.

hmmmm, Nashville gave back all its lead and more to go down 5-4. Fielder with a couple of fielding errors... oh no! But they came back with a run in the 7th and are still batting with the score at 5-5.

Is anybody somewhat suprised that Prince is only batting .241 in AAA after seeing him bat for the Brewers? I have a hard time believing he's batting under .300. He looked so focused and dialed in with every at bat with the Brewers. I mean, he's still getting his home runs at Nashville but he's not hitting "for average." It's probably not worth reading much into it, I was just so impressed with his limited at bats with the Brewers. How is a man who is that big swing a bat so well?

Solid outing by Yovani. Hope to see alot more of these outings by all the Power pitchers. How would you guys rate Yo's and Mark's progress thus far. They are both young, so what grade would you give these guys at this point.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Braves Near Perfection in Win Over Stars

Chuck James tossed six perfect innings and knocked in a run and Mississippi kept Huntsville hitless for 7 2/3 innings in an 8-0 win Sunday afternoon and evening at Trustmark Park in a steady, and sometimes heavy, rain generated by Hurricane Dennis. The Braves improved to 9-10 in the second half and won for the 12th time in 17 games against the Stars, who dropped to 10-9 in the half and into a second place tie with Carolina one half game behind West Tenn, who edged the Mudcats 4-3 earlier in the day.

James got all the run support he would need in the first inning, when the Braves tallied four times against Stars? starter David Bradley and knocked him out of the game after a 40-pitch frame. Wes Timmons was hit in the back by Bradley?s first pitch, moved to third base on a double by Onil Joseph and stayed there when Josh Burrus grounded out. Scott Thorman was intentionally passed to load the bases for Jonathan Schuerholz but the stategy backfired when Schuerholz singled to center field to chase home Timmons and Joseph to put the home team ahead 2-0. Gregor Blanco then reached on an infield single to third base and when first baseman Brandon Gemoll could not scoop Vinny Rottino?s low throw, Thorman scored and Schuerholz advanced to third. Josh Arteaga capped the rally with a run-scoring ground out. Bradley?s one inning effort match Ryan Costello?s one inning stint on June 26 as the shortest outing for a Stars? starting pitcher this season.

James fanned two in the first, one in the second, the side in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth and sixth innings to match a season-high with 11 strikeouts, set June 24 against Carolina. The left-hander went six innings for the eighth time in 12 starts, the longest he has gone in any appearance, and improved to 6-1. Mississippi has won 10 of the 12 games started by the 23-year old southpaw.

Jason Richardson retired the side in order in the seventh before walking Brad Nelson to open the eighth inning. Enrique Cruz bounced into a double play and Brandon Gemoll followed with a line drive double over the head of Joseph in right field for the first and only Huntsville hit. Ben Van Iderstine lined out to right for the final out of the inning and Jay Powell retired the side in order in the ninth to complete the 10th shutout thrown at the Stars this season. Huntsville?s one hit was a season-low and the visitors sent 28 batters to the plate, one more than the minimum, as the Braves yielded a season-low one hit.

The Braves added a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to complete the scoring against Andy Pratt, Costello and Keith Stamler.

The series wraps up Monday night with right-hander Ty Taubenheim making his double-A debut for the Stars against Braves right-hander Paul Bush, weather permitting. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Power's Gallardo shuts down Hagerstown bats

Michael Dailey

Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter

West Virginia Power starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo doesn't mind sharing.

However, at times, the 6-foot-3, 185-pound Texas native also can be down-right stingy.

On Sunday at Appalachian Power Park, the Hagerstown Suns got a good look at the latter, as Gallardo gobbled up both innings and Suns hitters during a 2-1 Power win.

West Virginia improved to 7-10, while a crowd of 2,629 watched on a near perfect day for baseball.

But Gallardo's performance was even more impressive than the weather, as the right-hander tossed eight innings of two-hit, one-run baseball while improving his record to 3-3.

Gallardo, who won his last start against Lexington by allowing just two runs and six hits in six innings, lowered his earned run average to 3.42. He also became the first Power starting pitcher to throw eight innings during an outing this season.

Gallardo's best performance of the year came in his fourth start without the handicaps of innings restrictions or being in tandem with another starting pitcher.

"The last four times out, he's not been in tandem with anybody," said Power pitcher coach John Curtis. "Since he's gone out on his own, he's struggled a little bit.

"The first two times out, he didn't make it through the fifth and there was some concern as to whether we'd done it too soon. But today he demonstrated what he's capable of doing."

For Gallardo, there was no worry about a premature departure from tandem pitching.

Instead, his worry and work went toward a delivery flaw.

"In the first couple of starts, I was having a little bit of trouble with my delivery," said Gallardo, a second-round pick in the 2004 draft. "I think that was the problem. I just worked on it in the pen and today it worked out great.

"It's one of those things where fixing the little problem in my delivery helped out a lot. The last couple of starts, I felt there was just something missing. I just worked to get it back.

"I'd say this was my best outing."

Curtis agreed that Sunday's performance was Gallardo's finest outing to date.

"He's been in a little funk as of late, pitching behind all the time," said Curtis. "Today he was out in front and had probably the best curveball he's had in his last four or five starts."

Gallardo allowed only a one-out single in the first and a two-out, RBI double in the eighth, while striking out five and walking two on 88 pitches.

"I just tried to keep the ball down and let them put it in play," said Gallardo. "I wanted to throw as few pitches as possible, that was my plan."

At the plate for the Power, Alcides Escobar and Hasan Rasheed each had two hits, but the hero was first baseman Grant Richardson.

Richardson had two hits and two RBI, including a game-winning, two-out, two-strike double in the eighth inning.

"I'd hit off the guy (Bo Bowman) once before and I knew he had a pretty good sinker," said Richardson of his game winner. "I was expecting that and just trying to work up the middle with it and I got lucky enough to hit one right down the line."

After an off-day today, the Power will begin a four-game series against the Lakewood BlueClaws Tuesday in Lakewood, N.J. The Power returns home on July 18.
