Just a tad surprising that the lineup doesn't see more turnover in a game at this level -- all the position starters go the distance...

Wow - assuming that Dennis and Manny return, this rotation looks as good as anything ever seen here. A bit of me feels sick for Dennis & Dana as that promotion never quite comes, but mostly I just feel priveleged to watch this group.

Khalid collecting the win here (even though I really do heart him) shows yet again why its the stupidest stat in all baseball.

HV,

From what I've heard recently from Doug Melvin, you'll probably get to enjoy them all season (barring injuries at levels above them).

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Nelson Nudges Stars Past Braves

Brad Nelson singled home the game-winning run in the eighth inning and Ty Taubenheim was impressive in his double-A debut in Huntsville?s 2-1 victory over Mississippi Monday night in the final game of a four-game set at Trustmark Park. The Stars grabbed three of the four games to improve to 11-9 in the second half and move back into a tie for first place in the North Division with Carolina after the Mudcats 2-1 win over West Tenn. The Stars had been swept in a four-game set in their last visit to Pearl and have now won six of the 18 games played between the teams this season.

Ben Van Iderstine led off the eighth inning against new Braves pitcher Steve Kent with a pinch-hit single but was thrown out at second base on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Tony Gwynn, Jr. before Kennard Bibbs followed with a single. Vinny Rottino grounded into a force play at second moving Gwynn to third base and Nelson followed with a single past a diving Scott Thorman at first base to knock in the go-ahead run. Nelson has hit safely in 10 of the 12 games he has played in with the Stars and driven in a dozen runs.

Nelson walked to open the second inning, moved to second base on a single by Brandon Gemoll and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Enrique Cruz, his second of the season and first since April 13 at Jacksonville. Callix Crabbe then hit a ground ball to Thorman, who went to a knee to field it on the backhand and could not. The ball got past him out into right field to allow Nelson to score and Gemoll to move to third base. Crabbe picked up a run batted in and the run charged to starter Paul Bush went in the books as unearned. Jeff Winchester struck out and Taubenheim grounded out to end the inning.

Taubenheim retired the side in order in the first two innings before giving up a run in the third. Gregor Blanco singled, moved to third base on a hit and run single by Luis Hernandez and scored on a sacrifice fly by Wes Timmons. Taubenheim left the bases loaded in the fourth by retiring Luis Hernandez on a fly ball and stranded a runner at second base with two outs in the fifth and sixth innings.

The game was delayed 33 minutes between the top and bottom halves of the seventh by an unexpected rain shower. Taubenheim was lifted after six innings and did not return when play resumed in the home seventh. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits, walked one and struck out four. Khalid Ballouli retired the side in order in the seventh, Mike Meyers worked a scoreless eighth and Jerome Gamble slammed the door in the ninth by retiring all three hitters he faced to earn his second save of the series and fourth of the season. The Stars held the Braves to two runs or fewer in their three wins and won two games by one run.

The Stars resume play after the all-star break Friday night at home against Carolina with right-hander Glenn Woolard matching up against Mudcats? right-hander Yorman Bazardo. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Defensive struggles, errors lead to Brewers loss

By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer

Juan Rivera hit a leadoff home run to open Monday's game between the Helena Brewers and the Ogden Raptors.

That hit was a sign of things to come.

The first two innings of the contest lasted over an hour, and when the nine-inning bout ended, Ogden was clutched to a narrow 9-8 lead.

The game marked the beginning of a four-game homestand between the two ball clubs, with the Brewers going into the meeting three games in the lead in the Pioneer League North, and the Raptors three up in the South.

"We didn't play too well defensively," said Helena skipper Ed Sedar. "And you have to give credit to Ogden for taking advantage of that."

Helena, who out hit the Raptors 11-9 in the game, also committed six errors, allowing for three unearned runs.

"We made six physical mistakes," said Sedar. "But I'd rather we do that than play well and make six mental mistakes. We can play better than we did tonight."

After Rivera's homer, Ogden walked the bases loaded and scored again on an error from Helena shortstop Scott McKnight.

Pitcher Ryan Marion walked in a third run before the Brewers turned a double play to get out of the inning.

McKnight committed three errors in the game, but made up for it at the plate, hitting 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. The Helena slugger crossed the plate on both hits, and drove in a run with the triple.

Agustin Septimo was 2-for-5 with a two-run homer, and catcher Angel Salome was 3-for-5.

After five innings, the game was tied at 6-6 but in the sixth, Ogden's Russ Mitchell doubled to score run number seven.

With no outs and a runner in scoring position, the Helena infield took the opportunity to make up for the error-filled night.

First baseman Brad Willcutt made a diving stop for out number one, McKnight made a wheeling midair throw for number two, and Septimo made a leaping catch at second to rob B.J. Richmond of an extra base hit.

The two teams will face off again tonight at 7:05 p.m (8:05 Central).

Helena Box Score:

Nice relief stint for RHP Tyler Morrison...

Southern League Player of the Week Honors:

Enrique Cruz, Huntsville

7 G, 25 AB, 6 R, 9 H, 1 2B, 0 3B, 2 HR, 5 RBI, .360 AVG, .640 SLG, 0 SB

Stars shortstop Enrique Cruz extended his hitting streak to 10 games before going 0-for-3 in his last game of the week. The 23-year-old shortstop collected a base hit in the first two games of the week before cranking his 11th roundtripper of the year in a 6-5 come-from-behind win over Birmingham on July 6. He had his biggest game of the week the next night, when he reached base four times, with a single, a home run and two walks, while driving in a pair of runs. The 6-foot-1 Dominican, who made his Major League debut with the Brewers in 2003, went 2-for-4 with an RBI in each of his next two games before seeing his hitting streak snapped on Sunday.
