Stars' Eveland takes major step

Left-hander will pitch out of Brewers' bullpen

By MARK McCARTER

Times Sports Staff markcolumn@aol.com

Somewhere headed north on I-65 Thursday morning, Dana Eveland wasn't answering his cell phone.

The Stars pitcher was driving from Mobile, where he pitched a perfect inning in Wednesday's Southern League All-Star Game, back to Huntsville, where the Stars would be opening a three-game series tonight with Carolina.

Except Eveland's destination would be different.

Except, for the longest time, with manager Don Money unable to reach him, he didn't know that.

Eveland, 10-4 with a 2.72 ERA, has been promoted to the Milwaukee Brewers, to whom he'll report for tonight's game with the Washington Nationals. Eveland, a 21-year-old from Palmdale, Calif., is expected to fill the Brewers' dire need for a left-handed setup man out of the bullpen.

In other player moves as the Stars return from the three-day All-Star break, pitcher Ryan Costello has been sent back to Single-A Brevard County and Josh Habel, who began the season in Huntsville, returns to the Stars. Dennis Sarfate should be ready to return from the disabled list and could fill Eveland's roster spot, Money said Thursday afternoon.

Eveland will be the sixth former Star on the Milwaukee roster, joining Doug Davis, Ben Sheets, Bill Hall, J.J. Hardy and Rickie Weeks (Geoff Jenkins also played for the Stars, but on a big-league rehab assignment). Three other ex-Stars have been with Milwaukee this season - Prince Fielder, David Krynzel and Mike Adams.

Huntsville and Carolina enter tonight's game tied atop the SL North second-half standings, with the Mudcats' 10-8 record holding a slight percentage edge over the Stars' 11-9. Tonight's game will be followed by a fireworks display. Saturday is the Bucky Jacobsen bobblehead giveaway, and Sunday's 6:05 game is the annual Mayberry Night.

It's all part of a "Fun To Be A Fan'' weekend, in which Stars fans will be eligible for myriad prize packs. One prize will go to the winning fan in a 100-words-or-less essay in which they proclaim themselves the biggest Stars fan. Entries, to info@huntsvillestars.com, are accepted through the third inning of tonight's game.

Sounds gunning for league title

By Nate Rau, nrau@nashvillecitypaper.com

This 2005 Nashville Sounds are no strangers to success. Two years ago, when a majority of the players were together in Double-A Huntsville, the team came within one win of the championship.

After a restful break because of Wednesday?s All-Star game, the team returned to Nashville refreshed and ready to finish its quest for a championship.

?You look at the season like climbing a hill and you know the hard part is over,? said infielder Chris Barnwell, who spent the week vacationing in the Phoenix area. ?You just need to take a break and clear your head for a few days.?

Individually each player is working towards a promotion to the big leagues. As a team, Barnwell says winning the Pacific Coast League truly matters.

?It?s really important,? Barnwell said. ?Being on a team this good, you always want to go for a championship. Two years ago in Huntsville we came within a win of the championship. A lot of these guys were on that team and [sounds manager Frank Kremblas] was coaching it, so we know this is a championship team.?

Barnwell says the Sounds pitching staff is what makes this a championship-caliber team.

?You can?t find a better pitching staff in the minor leagues than the one we have,? Barnwell said.

Thursday?s game rained out

The Sounds had their Thursday night game against Albuquerque cancelled because of ?unplayable playing conditions? at Greer Stadium.

Not even a helicopter could save the day. The team had a copter land on the infield and turn its propellers on in an attempt to dry the field.

The skies cleared shortly before the game was scheduled to be played and Sounds employees removed the infield tarp. But after touring the field, Kremblas, the umpiring crew and Isotopes manager Dean Treanor decided the field was not up to par.

Instead there will be a doubleheader tonight at 6 p.m. The twinbill will feature two seven-inning games. Rick Helling will face Frank Castillo in the first game. Ben Hendrickson goes for the Sounds against Travis Smith in nightcap.

West Virginia Power notebook

Rogers gains first win and some confidence

By Tommy R. Atkinson

Charleston Gazette Staff writer

West Virginia Power pitcher Mark Rogers earned his first win Tuesday, but more importantly picked up some much-needed confidence.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed starter allowed just two earned runs in five innings in a 3-2 win at Lakewood, N.J. He struck out six and walked three. Rogers had lost his first six decisions and was winless in 11 starts this year.

?We thought he threw the ball pretty good,?? said Power manager Ramon Aviles. ?He kept the ball down in the strike zone. That?s what he needs to do.

?He threw some very good breaking balls. We?d be in the dugout saying they have no chance at that one. A lot of times kids put extra pressure on themselves. Now after he got that first win he might relax and do what he?s capable of doing.??

The sky seems to be the limit for the 19-year-old from Orrs Island, Maine, who owns a 1-6 record with a 4.63 ERA.

Rogers was a first-round draft pick and fifth selection overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in last year?s June amateur draft. He was ranked the fifth-best prospect in the organization by Baseball America coming into the season and was named to the magazine?s annual Top 100 Prospects list, checking in at No. 55.

To go along with an above-average breaking ball, Rogers also possesses a blazing fastball that?s consistently clocked at 93 to 94 mph but can heat up to more than 100. The combination has allowed him to strike out 69 in 58 1/3 innings, but his inability to throw the fastball for strikes ? Rogers has issued 34 walks ? has also been at the core of his troubles.

?He really doesn?t have good command of his fastball,?? Aviles said, ?but he?s improving on that area. He tends to throw too hard at times. That causes him to throw the fastball out over the strike zone.

?His breaking ball has good rotation. It?s one of those that has the making of one they call falling off the table. That would be devastating to hitters. He?s got all the ingredients to be a top-of-the-line pitcher.??

Braun's brawn

Another first-round draft pick has also made his way to Charleston.

Third baseman Ryan Braun, a former University of Miami (Fla.) standout, was taken fifth overall this past June and spent just nine games in rookie league.

Entering Thursday?s play, however, the shortstop-turned-third baseman is hitting just .211 with two doubles and two RBIs with four strikeouts in 19 at-bats. The 6-2, 200-pound Braun hit .324 with two homers and 10 RBIs in nine games at Helena (Mont.) before getting called up.

?He?s just been missing pitches,?? said Aviles. ?He?s just been a little bit out front. He?s got bat speed and you cannot teach bat speed. He?s got some power there. He?s going to be OK. He knows what it takes and what he needs to work on. He?s got a good chance to play at the big-league level. He?s got the tools.??

Aviles said Braun certainly stands out during batting practice.

?The ball sounds different when he hits it,?? said the manager. ?The sound is hard. Guys hit the ball in batting practice, it sounds like they?re hitting with a newspaper.

?When he hits the ball, you hear that power coming off the bat. He hits the ball to all fields with some pop. My guess is he will stay here the rest of the year. I think he could play high [Class] A right now. I?m glad he?s here with us.?

In progress: Fort Myers (Twins) 4, Brevard County 3, after one inning

Steve Moss' two-run HR in the bottom of the first was part of the answer to LHP Ryan Costello's mystifying problems in his last few starts -- maybe David Weiser can contribute some numbers from Huntsville from Ryan's last few outings there, and then add this from tonight on top of that -- thank goodness for the double play!

Matt Tolbert walks.

J. R. Taylor grounds into double play, shortstop Ozzie Chavez to second baseman Steven Sollmann to first baseman Jeffrey Eure. Matt Tolbert out at 2nd.

Trent Oeltjen hit by pitch.

With Kyle Geiger batting, Trent Oeltjen steals (11) 2nd base.

Kyle Geiger walks.

Brock Peterson walks. Trent Oeltjen to 3rd. Kyle Geiger to 2nd.

Kyle Phillips hits a grand slam (2) to right field. Trent Oeltjen scores. Kyle Geiger scores. Brock Peterson scores.

Jose Leger walks.

Pitcher Change: Kenneth Durost replaces Ryan Costello.

Scott Whitrock strikes out swinging.

Salome is 2-2 with a double. This guy gets more hits than Google.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Baseball America Chat from Friday:

Q: James from Milwaukee asks:

Will the Brewers ever give Nelson Cruz or Corey Hart a shot at the bigs this season? Also, will Mark Rogers ever find his groove?

A: John Manuel: I would expect both Cruz and Hart to be in Milwaukee at least in September, and Rogers is doing fine. Wow, that's quick to give up on a guy, especially one who hit 100 mph earlier this year and who has 69 K's in 58 IP. Remember, Rogers is from Maine; he never faced hitters like he's seeing in the SAL. If he had come out and dominated, he would rank right near the top of this list. He's going to take a while, but the Brewers have one method of finding ace starting pitchers--the draft--and he was a good risk to take.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Gemoll Gets Stars to Top of Division

Brandon Gemoll singled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Huntsville to a 5-4 win over Carolina Friday night in the first of a three-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars improved to 12-9 in the second half and moved into sole possession of first place in the North Division, one game in front of the 10-9 Mudcats and West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, who were rained out.

Kennard Bibbs started the winning rally with a one-out single against Ross Wolf and moved to second base on a single by Vinny Rottino, who collected his third hit of the night and 10th multiple hit game in the second half. Brad Nelson reached on an infield hit to load the bases and Carolina manager Gary Allenson brought the infield and outfield in against Gemoll, who had picked up one hit in five prior at-bats with the sacks full. He chopped a 1-1 offering to first base that was fielded by Chris Bass, who threw home but it was not in time to get Bibbs, who went sliding head first across the plate with the winning run. The Stars won for a fifth time in their last at-bat and improved to 11-16 in one-run games.

John Vanden Berg?s two-out, two-run single put the home team ahead 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth but Carolina tied the game in the ninth against Jerome Gamble on a run-scoring double by Jeremy Hermida and a run-producing ground out by Jason Hill, both of whom drove in their 43rd runs of the season.

Carolina starter Yorman Bazardo blasted a two-run home run in the second inning to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. Rottino singled home Stars? starter Glenn Woolard with two outs in the third to trim the lead to 2-1 and Vanden Berg singled home Enrique Cruz with two away in the fourth to knot the game at two. It was Vanden Berg?s first run batted in since June 15.

Woolard lasted seven innings, giving up two runs on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts. He has allowed three runs over 15 innings in his last two starts, all of which have scored on long balls. Bazardo also went seven frames, yielding two runs on seven hits, while walking two and fanning three.

The series continues Saturday night with right-hander Ty Taubenheim taking the hill for the Stars against Mudcats left-hander Ray Aguilar. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
