Late Isotopes Homer Sinks Sounds, 6-2

NASHVILLE ? Albuquerque?s Derek Wathan belted a three-run homer in the top of the eighth inning to propel the visiting Isotopes to a 6-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Saturday evening in front of 8,817 fans at Greer Stadium.

Three Albuquerque pitchers combined to hold the Sounds to a season-low two hits on the evening, both coming off the bat of second baseman Warren Morris (2-for-4). Meanwhile, six different Isotopes batters posted two or more hits in the victory, led by leadoff hitter Eric Reed?s 3-for-5, two-double effort.

Wathan and Joe Dillon drove in three runs apiece to account for all of Albuquerque?s scoring.

Despite the loss, Nashville (52-42) maintains its four-game lead over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division.

Sounds outfielder Nelson Cruz was held hitless for the first time while wearing a Nashville uniform, finishing 0-for-2 to snap his hitting streak at 11 games.

The teams traded a pair of first-inning runs. After the Isotopes jumped ahead 1-0 when Eric Reed scored on a Dillon groundout, Morris tied the contest with a one-out solo homer to right-center off Albuquerque starter Donovan Osborne. The blast was his fifth of the year.

Albuquerque re-took the lead in the third when Reed and Dillon combined their efforts again. Reed opened the frame with a single, stole second, and put the Isotopes up 2-1 when he scored on Dillon?s one-out RBI double.

Nashville tied the game at 2-2 in the seventh when outfielder Corey Hart, who had reached on an error then stole third for his 21st theft of the year, scored on a Tony Zuniga groundout to short.

After Larry Barnes and Wilson Delgado reached on eighth-inning singles against Sounds reliever Mike Adams, Wathan greeted Nashville left-hander Mitch Stetter with a three-run home run to left to put the visitors on top by a 5-2 count. The blast, which came on an 0-1 pitch, was Wathan?s fourth of the season.

The Isotopes tacked on an insurance run in the ninth on Dillon?s one-out RBI double to right against Clint Weibl.

Albuquerque reliever John Riedling (1-0) earned his first victory of the year after blowing a save in relief of Osborne then benefiting from Wathan?s heroics. The right-hander did not allow a hit in his two innings of work. Adams (3-2) took the loss after allowing two runs and striking out three in his 1 1/3 frames.

Sounds starter Justin Lehr took a no-decision for Nashville. The right-hander allowed two runs in six innings, fanning five.

The teams wrap up the series with a 6 p.m. meeting on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Gary Glover (2-0, 1.32) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Albuquerque right-hander Jeff Fulchino (6-6, 6.25).

Salome!

In progress: Helena 5, Orem (Angels) 3, H-Crew still batting bottom of the 8th
Angel just smacked a two-run shot for the lead, his third hit on the night...

(We'll overlook that eighth error and eighth passed ball...)

I hate to be negative here, but a passed ball and a throwing error to go with Angel's great night at the plate. He needs more reps, and it wouldn't be a bad idea to get a rover down there to work with him. This is too good of a talent to not have at catcher. I know it's still very early in his career, but he's been a butcher.

Owlz is unique -- the Helena boys need to be the Brewerz...

Helena Box Score:

Huge save for Richard Breshears, inheriting and stranding two runners in the 9th; let's see: Mark Rogers, Angel Salome, Darren Ford, and Derek Miller -- Northeast Scout Tony Blengino had a pretty good 2004 draft, huh? Miller is rolling against the younger competition he's facing...

The real worry tonight was Khalid, who left the mound clutching his pitching arm http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif

Hope everything is OK

What speed is Ty's fastball? Tonight it never reached 90 and it didn't seem to move much. Their hitters just stood and waited for it.

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

Mudcats Make Most of Early Runs

Jason Hill hit a three-run home run in the first inning and Frank Moore chipped in with three hits and three runs scored in Carolina?s 7-5 win over Huntsville Saturday night in the second game of a three-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Mudcats improved to 11-9 in the second half and moved back into a first place tie with the 12-10 Stars in the North Division, pending the outcome of the second game of the West Tenn-Mississippi doubleheader in Jackson, TN.

Moore and Drew Niles singled to open the game and one out later Hill launched a three-run blast to left field to put the visitors ahead 3-0. It was the 14th long ball of the year for Hill, a career high, and gave him a team-best 46 runs batted in. Moore doubled in a run in the second and then scored on a base hit by Jeremy Hermida to put Carolina ahead 5-1.

Huntsville starter Ty Taubenheim was knocked out after two frames and suffered his first loss at the double-A level and just his third of the season. The right-hander went six solid innings in his first start with the Stars five days earlier at Mississippi but faced only 13 hitters in his first start at home.

The Stars closed to within 6-4 in the third on a run-scoring single by Brad Nelson and a two-out, two-run single by Ben Van Iderstine. Carolina starter Ray Aguilar lasted five frames, allowing four runs on 10 hits to pick up his second win in five starts since joining the team. The left-hander struck out five and walked one and was followed by Luke Lockwood, who retired all six hitters he faced.

Khalid Ballouli, the Stars third pitcher of the night, lasted three innings and allowed a run on three hits before leaving in the eighth inning after injuring his right pitching arm on a 2-2 offering to Jeremy Hermida that he took for ball three. Brett Evert came on to replace Ballouli and walked Hermida before getting out of the inning by striking out James Shanks with two runners on base.

Nelson singled home Tony Gwynn, Jr. with two outs in the ninth to trim the Carolina lead to 7-5 but Mike Flannery retired Guilder Rodriguez on a ground ball to end the game and record his 11th save of the season. Nelson singled twice and reached on a fielder?s choice and has now been on base in 35 of 62 plate appearances since joining the team on June 30.

The series wraps up Sunday evening with right-hander David Bradley taking the hill for the Stars against Mudcats right-hander Josh Johnson. Coverage of the game gets underway at 5:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
